ارم
Attested forms : إِرَمَ 1
Core meaning
Proper noun. The text joins it to the Aad and defines it by its work: the city, or the people, of the lofty pillars, without equal in the lands. The translation writes "Iram".
Uses
إِرَمَ → "Iram" : a name set beside the Aad, at the head of a list of annihilated peoples.
- «بِعَادٍ إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ» — "the Aad, Iram of the lofty pillars" (89:7)
Evidence from the text
The single use, in 89:6-8, opens a list of three peoples: the Aad with Iram, the Thamud, Fir'awn. Each is named by a work: the lofty pillars, the rock hewn through in the valley, the stakes. For Iram, the sentence adds "the like of which had never been created in the lands": the greatness of the work is the trait that names it, and these three peoples are "those who exceeded all measure in the lands".
