اود
Attested forms : يَـُٔودُهُۥ 1
Core meaning
To weigh to the point of wearying: the charge whose upkeep costs effort.
Uses
يَـُٔودُهُۥ → "to cost effort" : stated through negation: keeping the heavens and the earth does not weigh on God.
- «وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفْظُهُمَا» — "and their preservation weighs on Him not at all" (2:255)
Evidence from the text
The single use is negated and bears on the greatest charge the text can name: preserving the heavens and the earth, over which His Seat extends (2:255). The negation presupposes the meaning: what would be an exhausting burden for any other costs God no effort.
The text says the same elsewhere with other roots, about creation: "without any weariness touching Us" (50:38), "and was not worn out by their creation" (46:33). In 2:255 it is the duration of the keeping, not the act of creating, that does not weigh.
Distinctions
- لغب — the weariness that follows effort, whereas اود is the very weight of the charge
- عيى — exhaustion, inability to go on
