بجس
Attested forms : ٱنۢبَجَسَتْ 1
Core meaning
To well forth by piercing: water opening a passage of itself through a closed surface.
Uses
ٱنۢبَجَسَ → "to well forth" : the reflexive form: the water comes forth of itself from the struck rock.
- «فَٱنۢبَجَسَتْ مِنْهُ ٱثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًۭا» — "and behold, twelve springs welled forth from it" (7:160)
Evidence from the text
The word appears only once, in a complete scene: Moussa strikes the rock with his staff, and twelve springs come out of it, one for each group, for "each group of men knew its drinking place" (7:160). The same account, in 2:60, uses ٱنفَجَرَتْ, water that bursts through with force; here the verb shows the water opening a way through the stone.
