ثبى
Attested forms : ثُبَاتٍ 1
Core meaning
The group that sets out apart from the others: the troop mobilized in detachments, as opposed to all setting out together.
Uses
ثُبَات → "in detachments" : a fractioned mobilization, in distinct groups.
- «فَٱنفِرُوا۟ ثُبَاتٍ أَوِ ٱنفِرُوا۟ جَمِيعًۭا» — "mobilize in detachments, or mobilize all together" (4:71)
Evidence from the text
The word occurs only once, and the sentence defines it itself: ثُبَات is opposed to جَمِيعًا, "all together". These are two ways of one same mobilization, both permitted: setting out in several separate groups, or in a single block. The command that precedes, "Take your precautions" (4:71), says what the choice depends on: the caution the danger calls for.
Distinctions
- جمع — "all together": mobilization in a single block, which ثُبَات divides
