جرع
Attested forms : يَتَجَرَّعُهُۥ 1
Core meaning
To swallow in small sips, with difficulty, what one cannot drink in one draught.
Uses
يَتَجَرَّعُهُۥ → "to sip little by little" : to drink with effort, sip after sip, without the drink going down.
- «يَتَجَرَّعُهُۥ وَلَا يَكَادُ يُسِيغُهُۥ» — "which he will sip little by little, hardly able to swallow it" (14:17)
Evidence from the text
The word occurs only once, and the sentence gives its measure. The form says repeated effort, sip after sip; what follows says the failure: "hardly able to swallow it" (14:17). The gesture answers the rest of the verse, where death comes from every side without the one who undergoes it dying: drinking and dying, two acts that never come to an end.
Distinctions
- سوغ — to let go down: the drink that passes without difficulty, which the sip does not achieve
