حوى
Attested forms : ٱلْحَوَايَآ 1 · أَحْوَىٰ 1
Core meaning
To contain by enveloping: the entrails that envelop, the plant that contracts and darkens as it dries.
Uses
ٱلْحَوَايَا → "the entrails" : what, in the body, contains and envelops.
- «أَوِ ٱلْحَوَايَآ» — "or the entrails" (6:146)
أَحْوَىٰ → "dark" : the hue of what has contracted while drying.
- «فَجَعَلَهُۥ غُثَآءً أَحْوَىٰ» — "and then made it dark wisps of straw" (87:5)
Evidence from the text
Two uses. In 6:146, the entrails are what contains and envelops, listed with the fats that the backs carry. In 87:5, the pasture becomes dark wisps of straw: the plant contracts on itself as it dries and darkens; the colour states this contraction.
