خضد
Attested forms : مَّخْضُودٍۢ 1
Core meaning
To strip a branch of its thorns: مَخْضُود, the thorny tree whose thorn has been removed.
Uses
مَخْضُود → "thornless" : the lote tree of the Garden, rid of what wounds.
- «فِى سِدْرٍۢ مَّخْضُودٍۢ» — "Among thornless lote trees" (56:28)
Evidence from the text
The single use opens the description of the abode of the "companions of the right" (56:27-34). The adjective names what has been removed from the tree, not what it bears: the lote tree is known for its thorns, and the text keeps it only by removing them.
The same tree appears in the punished garden of Saba': "and a few lote trees" (34:16), scarce, beside the bitter fare and the tamarisk. There the tree is reduced; here it is made harmless.
