درر

Sealed drr 4 occurrences

4 occurrences · 4 suras · first occurrence 6:6

Attested forms : مِّدْرَارًۭا 3 · دُرِّىٌّۭ 1

Core meaning

To flow in a continuous, generous stream: the sky that gives without pause, and the light of a heavenly body that does not weaken.

Uses

  1. مِدْرَار → "in copious streams" : the sky that gives without stopping; it is promised to whoever asks forgiveness.

    • «يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًۭا» — "He will send upon you the sky in copious streams" (11:52)
    • «وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْهِم مِّدْرَارًۭا» — "and to whom We sent the sky in copious streams" (6:6)
  2. دُرِّيّ → "brilliant" : the heavenly body whose light gives itself without weakening.

    • «كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌۭ دُرِّىٌّۭ» — "like a brilliant heavenly body" (24:35)

Evidence from the text

Three times out of four, the word qualifies the sky sent upon a people. Hud and Nuh promise the same thing in the same words, after the same call: "ask forgiveness of your Guardian" (11:52, 71:10-11). In 6:6, the sky so given did not hold back the generations annihilated: the gift is never owed.

In 24:35, the same stream becomes light: the glass of the niche is "like a brilliant heavenly body", and its oil is about to glow forth without fire touching it.

Distinctions

  • مطر — rain: the water that falls; مِدْرَار says the flow that does not break off
