ذئم
Attested forms : مَذْءُومًۭا 1
Core meaning
To blame with contempt: to strike someone with a judgment that disgraces him. The single use qualifies Iblis sent away after his refusal: "reviled".
Uses
مَذْءُوم → "reviled" : the one struck by a contemptuous blame; said of Iblis, right after he refused to prostrate.
- «ٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا مَذْءُومًۭا مَّدْحُورًۭا» — "Get out of here, reviled, driven away" (7:18)
Evidence from the text
The word has a single use, and there it is joined to مَدْحُور, "driven away": "Get out of here, reviled, driven away" (7:18). The two participles share the sentence: مَدْحُور states the removal, being driven far off; مَذْءُوم states the judgment that goes with it, blame and contempt. The pair is no repetition: one says the place lost, the other the honour lost.
The scene prepares this judgment: Iblis calls himself "better than him" (7:12), and the first answer already lowers him: "go out, then, you are indeed among the diminished" (7:13). The one who wanted to be above is sent away under blame.
Distinctions
- دحر — to drive away: removal by force, whereas ذأم states the blame that disgraces
- لوم — blame for a fault, without the contempt carried by ذأم
