Core meaning
Force carried to its highest degree: what binds and holds together, or what strikes with intensity.
Uses
شَدِيد → "severe"; "formidable" in 13:13 and 59:14, "vehement" in 100:8 : said above all of God's punishment and sanction; the formula recurs identically.
أَشَدّ → "stronger", "more intense", "more formidable", "the most severe", "more severe" : the comparative: one degree higher, in power, in love, in punishment.
- «كَانُوٓا۟ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةًۭ» — "they were superior to you in strength" (9:69)
- «وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ أَشَدُّ حُبًّۭا لِّلَّهِ» — "but those who have believed are even more intense in the love of God" (2:165)
- «وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ أَشَدُّ وَأَبْقَىٰٓ» — "and the punishment of the last life is more severe and more lasting" (20:127)
- «أَوْ أَشَدَّ خَشْيَةًۭ» — "or with an even more intense dread" (4:77)
أَشُدّ → "full maturity" : the point where a human being's strength reaches its fullness.
- «حَتَّىٰ يَبْلُغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ» — "until he reaches his full maturity" (6:152)
شَدَّ, ٱشْدُدْ, سَنَشُدُّ → "to strengthen", "to tighten" : to bind what must hold: an arm, a dominion, a frame, a bond.
أَشِدَّآء, شِدَاد → "severe", "strong" : the plural: beings or things of unrelenting force.
ٱشْتَدَّتْ → "intensely" : force carried to its height, said of the wind.
- «ٱشْتَدَّتْ بِهِ ٱلرِّيحُ» — "ashes that the wind whips intensely" (14:18)
Evidence from the text
The formula "severe in sanction" recurs identically from one end of the text to the other (2:196, 5:2, 8:13, 59:7): the severity is that of a sanction which follows an act. The comparative measures: the ancient peoples, "superior in strength" to those who follow them (9:69, 30:9, 40:21), the fire of Jahannam, "even more intense in heat" (9:81). Followed by a noun, it keeps that noun: "or with an even more intense remembrance" (2:200), "or with an even more intense dread" (4:77). For punishment, severity is said in the comparative as in the positive: Fir'awn threatens to make known "which of us is more severe in punishment" (20:71), and the punishment of the last life is "more severe and more lasting" (20:127).
The same word names the force that holds together. أَشُدّ is the age when strength is at its height (6:152, 12:22), and in 46:15 it goes with "forty years". The verb binds what must hold: Moussa's arm through his brother (28:35), Dawud's dominion (38:20), the frame of the human being (76:28), the captive's bond (47:4).
