Attested forms : ٱلصُّحُفِ 2 · صُحُفِ 2 · صُحُفًۭا 2 · بِصِحَافٍۢ 1 · صُحُفٍۢ 1 · ٱلصُّحُفُ 1
Core meaning
What is spread out to be offered: recorded content, unfolded to be read and passed on, not the material that bears it; once, the wide dish that is passed around.
Uses
صُحُف → "chronicles" : the recorded content of a revelation, recited and passed on; the "former chronicles" are those of Ibrahim and Moussa.
صُحُف مُنَشَّرَة, ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ → "chronicles deployed" : content laid open to the sight of all, on the Day or at the demand of those who insist on it.
صِحَاف → "trays" : the wide, flat dish on which one presents what one offers.
- «يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِصِحَافٍۢ مِّن ذَهَبٍۢ وَأَكْوَابٍۢ» — "Trays of gold and goblets will be passed among them" (43:71)
Evidence from the text
What the text says of the chronicles always bears on their content. The messenger is "reciting purified chronicles, containing upright writings" (98:2): what is recited is a text, not a material. The chronicles of Moussa and Ibrahim are cited by what they say: "that no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another" (53:36-38).
The content is made to be spread out. On the Day, "the chronicles are deployed" (81:10), like the register each one "will meet deployed" (17:13); those who refuse the reminder demand for themselves "chronicles deployed" (74:52). The tray of 43:71 keeps the same gesture: a wide surface on which one presents what one offers.
Distinctions
- كتب — writing, the Scripture: what is prescribed and fixed in writing, whereas the chronicle names the recorded content that is unfolded and passed on
