فنى
Attested forms : انٍۢ 1
Core meaning
To cease to be: the condition of what passes, before what endures.
Uses
فَانٍ → "perishing" : everything upon the earth, bound to pass.
- «كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍۢ» — "Everything upon it is perishing" (55:26)
Evidence from the text
The only use is set against its opposite, in the same sentence: everything upon the earth "is perishing, and only the direction of your Guardian remains" (55:26-27). The word does not state a destruction coming from outside: it states the condition of what was created, to pass.
Distinctions
- هلك — annihilation, the loss that strikes; فنى states the condition of what passes
- بقى — to endure, the opposite set in the same sentence
