Attested forms : لَّلَجُّوا۟ 1 · لُّجِّىٍّۢ 1 · لُجَّةًۭ 1 · لَّجُّوا۟ 1
Core meaning
To sink in without return: into water without bottom, or into a conduct one no longer comes out of.
Uses
لَجُّوا۟, لَّلَجُّوا۟ → "be mired" : to sink into a conduct without coming out of it.
لُّجِّىّ → "deep, surging" : the sea whose bottom cannot be seen.
- «فِى بَحْرٍۢ لُّجِّىٍّۢ» — "on a deep, surging sea" (24:40)
لُجَّة → "a pool of water" : the expanse of water one thinks one is entering.
- «حَسِبَتْهُ لُجَّةًۭ» — "she took it for a pool of water" (27:44)
Evidence from the text
In 24:40, the لُجِّىّ sea bears darknesses laid one on another: a wave, another above it, and a cloud; this is depth without bottom. In 27:44, the queen takes the floor for a لُجَّة and bares her legs: she expects to step into it.
The verb carries this depth over to conduct. In 23:75, even the removal of harm does not bring them out: "they would be mired in their immoderation, going about blindly"; in 67:21, insolence and recoil are the place one has sunk into.
Distinctions
- صرر — to be knotted to an act and keep to it, whereas لجج says sinking into a state
- عمه — to go about blindly: the state this sinking leaves one in
