لحف
Attested forms : إِلْحَافًۭا 1
Core meaning
To press a request until one imposes on the person solicited.
Uses
إِلْحَافًا → "insistently" : the manner of asking that clings and forces attention.
- «لَا يَسْـَٔلُونَ ٱلنَّاسَ إِلْحَافًۭا» — "they do not ask men insistently" (2:273)
Evidence from the text
The word appears once, negated, in the portrait of the needy of 2:273: held back in the way of God, they seem rich to the ignorant, so much do they restrain themselves, and one recognizes them only by their marks. What sets them apart is the absence of this pressing request: the word names a manner of soliciting, not the act of asking.
Distinctions
- حفو — أَحْفَىٰ pushes the request to the end of what the other owns; إِلْحَاف is the clinging manner of the one who asks.
