مزق
Attested forms : مُمَزَّقٍ 2 · مُزِّقْتُمْ 1 · مَزَّقْنَٰهُمْ 1
Core meaning
To shred until the dispersal is complete: a body undone, a people scattered.
Uses
مُزِّقْتُمْ, مَزَّقْنَٰهُمْ, كُلَّ مُمَزَّقٍ → "utterly disintegrated", "We disintegrated them utterly" : the verb followed by its own noun: dispersal carried to its end.
Evidence from the text
Both uses double the root: the verb, then كُلَّ مُمَزَّقٍ, "every dispersal". In 34:7 those who disown use it to mock the new creation: could a body undone to the end come back? In 34:19 God applies it to the people who had asked that the stages of their journeys be lengthened: they are scattered until they are no more than topics of discourse.
Distinctions
- فرق — to separate into parts; مزق scatters until nothing is left together
