مشعر
Attested forms : ٱلْمَشْعَرِ 1
Core meaning
The place where God is remembered on the return from Arafat: a marker given to be sensed, from the root ش ع ر.
Uses
ٱلْمَشْعَرِ ٱلْحَرَامِ → "the Inviolable Perceptible Marker" : a place named only once, where remembrance is prescribed.
- «فَٱذْكُرُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ عِندَ ٱلْمَشْعَرِ ٱلْحَرَامِ» — "remember God near the Inviolable Perceptible Marker" (2:198)
Evidence from the text
A single occurrence. In 2:198, the place follows the collective movement: "And when you surge forth from Arafat, remember God near the Inviolable Perceptible Marker". The name comes from ش ع ر, to sense: like the شَعَائِر, it is a marker given to be sensed. The qualifier ٱلْحَرَام places it among the inviolable places.
