مكو
Attested forms : مُكَآءًۭ 1
Core meaning
Tumult: agitation taking the place of recollection.
Uses
مُكَآءًۭ → "a tumult" : the Contact turned into agitation near the House.
- «إِلَّا مُكَآءًۭ وَتَصْدِيَةًۭ» — "was nothing but a tumult and a barring." (8:35)
Evidence from the text
The word occurs only in 8:35. It qualifies the Contact of those who disown, near the House, and it is joined to تَصْدِيَة, connected with ص د د, to bar: in the next verse, the same people spend their goods "so as to bar from the way of God" (8:36). Their Contact was thus nothing but a tumult, joined to a barring. The skeleton of the ancient manuscripts, مكا, without hamza, also reads مَكًّا, from the root م ك ك (sheet مكة); the translation follows this reading, outside the transmitted readings.
