نغض
Attested forms : سَيُنْغِضُونَ 1
Core meaning
To shake the head with a repeated movement, as a sign of doubt or mockery.
Uses
فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ → "they will shake their heads" : the gesture that accompanies the incredulous question.
- «فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ إِلَيْكَ رُءُوسَهُمْ» — "Then they will shake their heads at you" (17:51)
Evidence from the text
The word occurs only in 17:51. Those who doubt they will be brought back after becoming bones and dust (17:49) shake their heads at the messenger, then ask: "When will that be?" The gesture and the question go together: the shaking says the disbelief before speech puts it into words.
The complement "at you" directs the gesture at the one addressed: it is the body's answer to what has just been affirmed.
