هجد
Attested forms : تَهَجَّدْ 1
Core meaning
To keep vigil at night, by choice, beyond what is due.
Uses
فَتَهَجَّدْ → "keep vigil" : imperative: the vigil is given as an addition, for part of the night.
- «وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِۦ نَافِلَةًۭ لَّكَ» — "And for part of the night, keep vigil with it, as an addition for you" (17:79)
Evidence from the text
The single occurrence carries its own definition: the vigil is set "for part of the night" and called نَافِلَة, "addition", that is, what is added to what is due (17:79). The verse joins a promise to it, "a praised station": it is a chosen effort, not missed sleep.
