وقذ
Attested forms : ٱلْمَوْقُوذَةُ 1
Core meaning
The state of the animal that declines toward death, without having been put to death.
Uses
ٱلْمَوْقُوذَة → "the animal on the brink of death" : prohibited, beside beasts that died otherwise.
- «وَٱلْمُنْخَنِقَةُ وَٱلْمَوْقُوذَةُ» — "the strangled animal, the animal on the brink of death" (5:3)
Evidence from the text
The word occurs only once, in the list of prohibited foods of 5:3. Each term names a different way in which the animal comes to die: strangled, declining from illness, killed by a horn-blow, devoured. ٱلْمَوْقُوذَة is there the dying animal, whose life ebbs without a blow struck; the list thus sets it apart from the violent deaths around it.
