# 6:154: thumma — when the message leaves the person to settle in the Scripture

A postulate, not an easy shortcut. Check every reference, word for word.

THE POSTULATE

Before Moses, the divine message was carried by the very person of the messenger — Noah, Hud, Salih, Shu'ayb transmitted orally, and the message did not survive them in written form. With Moses, a change of method occurs: the message is now recorded in a Scripture. This change fails a first time (Moses' Scripture, reserved for the Children of Israel, fails to keep them upright). A second attempt is made by directly entrusting divine authority to kings — David, Solomon — and it too fails. With Muhammad, no sign, no personal charisma is granted him: only a closed, universal, preserved Book now carries the message — available to whoever wishes to consult it, independent of the messenger's own person.

6:154 — the pivot

VERSE

"Then We gave Moses the Scripture, as a completion for the one who does good, a detailing of all things, a guidance, and a mercy..."

The word ثُمَّ, in classical grammar, marks a succession with a break/interval — unlike ف (immediacy) or و (simple coordination). It is not a neutral connector: it signals a threshold crossed, not a mere continuation.

Neutralizing the objection about the incoherence of thumma

A hasty reader might object: "Moses precedes Muhammad, how could thumma mark a change of era in a text addressed to Muhammad?" This objection collapses as soon as one reads what immediately precedes:

VERSE

"Say: Come, let me recite what your Lord has forbidden you: do not associate anything with Him..." (6:151, followed by the complete ethical code: kindness to parents, not killing children, avoiding indecencies, respecting life, protecting the orphan's property, full measure, justice, keeping one's word, "this is My path, straight" — 6:151-153)

VERSE

"Thus did those before them deny, until they tasted Our might." (6:148)

The passage itself establishes its own logic: "thus" (كذلك) operates in a paradigmatic mode, not a linear chronology seen from Muhammad's standpoint. The same principle — an ethical code recited, denied, harshness incurred — is presented as having repeated itself throughout history, "those before them" including every people prior to Quraysh. The text does not therefore tell a strictly ordered timeline from the narrator's viewpoint; it stacks structurally identical cases. Thumma in verse 154 belongs to this same logic: it does not say "chronologically after Muhammad," it marks a qualitative threshold in the architecture of transmission — from the oral statement (151-153) to the complete, detailed Scripture (154). The objection about incoherence confuses narrative order with historical order, whereas the text itself announces, a few verses earlier, that it reasons by repeated pattern, not strict chronology.

The second attempt: authority entrusted directly to kings

After the failure of the Scripture reserved for a single people (see below), a second mode is tried: divine authority is given directly to sovereigns.

VERSE

"We strengthened his rule, and gave him wisdom and decisive judgment." (38:20, David)

VERSE

"And to each of the two [David and Solomon] We gave judgment and knowledge." (21:79)

VERSE

"And David killed Goliath; God gave him kingship and wisdom." (2:251)

Royal authority, wisdom, judgment — given directly, with no scriptural intermediary. And yet the failure returns, documented in black and white:

VERSE

"And We decreed to the Children of Israel in the Scripture: You will surely spread corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely rise to great arrogance." (17:4, followed in 17:5-8 by the account of the two corruptions and their consequences)

Neither the Scripture alone (Moses) nor direct royal power (David, Solomon) sufficed to keep a people upright. The failure is not the message's own: it is the failure of its dependence on a person or a lineage.

With Muhammad: neither sign nor person — only the Book

VERSE

"Nothing kept Us from sending the signs except that the earlier peoples denied them." (17:59)

VERSE

"...but he is the messenger of God, and the seal of the prophets." (33:40)

VERSE

"It is indeed We who sent down the Reminder, and it is indeed We who preserve it." (15:9)

No material sign is granted to Muhammad — the reason given is the repeated failure of this arrangement among earlier peoples. He is declared "seal of the prophets": the prophetic function itself closes with him. And the Reminder he transmits is guaranteed preserved by God Himself, independent of any fallible human chain of transmission.

What this means

The corpus documents three successive transmission architectures: the messenger's person alone (before Moses), a Scripture reserved for one people (Moses, failure documented in 17:4-8), direct royal power (David/Solomon, the same failure). With Muhammad, none of these three fallible vehicles is used any longer: neither personal charisma nor sign (17:59), nor dynastic lineage — only a closed, universal Book (34:28, 21:107), preserved independent of men (15:9). The message no longer hangs on the virtue of a messenger, a chosen people, or a king: it is made available to whoever wishes to consult it, identical for all, with every case needed for legislation. Whoever seeks it finds it as it was transmitted; whoever turns away from it turns away on their own — nothing in the arrangement any longer depends on a living human intermediary to be preserved or blindly followed.

Verify it yourself

Read 6:146 through 6:154 in sequence without skipping a verse, spotting for yourself the shift from "those before them" (148, repeated pattern) to the "then" of 154 (scriptural threshold). Then compare with 17:4-8 (failure of the Mosaic arrangement), 38:20/21:79/2:251 (direct royal power), then 17:59, 33:40, and 15:9 for Muhammad's case. At each step, ask yourself what failed — the person, the people, the lineage — and what, structurally, is no longer at stake in the last case.
