प्रमाणित रूप : ٱلْمَسِيحُ 8 · ٱلْمَسِيحَ 3
Core meaning
Title borne by Issa, son of Maryam; the text gives it as an attribute. It has the letters of م س ح, to pass the hand so as to wipe, the gesture of ablutions (5:6); the text does not develop this connection.
Uses
ٱلْمَسِيح joined to the name → "Al-Massih" : a title kept as it is, joined to the name of Issa and to his mission.
ٱلْمَسِيح alone → "Al-Massih" : the title without the name, in the words of men and when the text reports his own.
Evidence from the text
The text gives the title as an attribute: "whose attribute will be Al-Massih, Issa, son of Maryam" (3:45). It then joins it to the name and to the mission: "Al-Massih, Issa, son of Maryam, is only the messenger of God, and His word" (4:171).
Used alone, the title returns in the words that raise him beyond his measure: "God, that is Al-Massih, son of Maryam" (5:17, 5:72); "Al-Massih is the son of God" (9:30). The text sets against them his own words: "O Sons of Israel! Obey God, my Guardian and your Guardian" (5:72); and the text itself says: "Al-Massih, son of Maryam, is only a messenger" (5:75).
