Proper noun10 / 57
العزير
Attested forms : عُزَيْرٌ 1
Core meaning
Proper noun. It appears only once, in a saying the text reports and refutes. The translation writes the name alone: "Al-'Uzayr".
Uses
عُزَيْرٌ → "Al-'Uzayr" : the one whom the Reoriented make a son of God.
- «عُزَيْرٌ ٱبْنُ ٱللَّهِ» — "Al-'Uzayr is the son of God" (9:30)
Evidence from the text
The text relates nothing of Al-'Uzayr: it quotes what others say of him, in exact parallel with the saying of the Helpers, "Al-Massih is the son of God" (9:30). Both sayings receive the same judgment: "That is their saying with their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who, before them, disowned", then "How then are they turned away?" (9:30). The name thus has no role of its own in the text; it serves as an instance of a sonship ascribed to God.
