Forme attestate : ٱلْعُزَّىٰ 1
Core meaning
Proper noun. Al-Uzza is the second of the three female deities that the text names together, to refute the division made of them. The translation writes the name alone: "Al-Uzza".
Uses
ٱلْعُزَّىٰ → "Al-Uzza" : named between Al-Lat and Manat.
- «أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰ» — "Do you then see Al-Lat, and Al-Uzza" (53:19)
Evidence from the text
The name appears only once, in a closed list of three: Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat, "the third, the other". The text relates nothing of them: it moves at once to the division made between oneself and God, "Would the male be for you, and for Him the female?", and judges it: "That, then, would be an inequitable division" (53:22).
The next verse says what these names are worth: "They are nothing but attributes you have named, you and your forefathers" (53:23).
