At-Tahrim
The Prohibition
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
O Informant! Why do you hold as prohibited what God has permitted you, seeking the approval of your wives?
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ لِمَ تُحَرِّمُ مَآ أَحَلَّ ٱللَّهُ لَكَ تَبْتَغِى مَرْضَاتَ أَزْوَٰجِكَ
And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
God has fixed for you the release from your oaths,
قَدْ فَرَضَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ تَحِلَّةَ أَيْمَٰنِكُمْ
and God is your nearest Guarantor.
وَٱللَّهُ مَوْلَىٰكُمْ
And He is the All-Knowing, the Wise.
وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ
And when the Informant confided a discourse in secret to one of his wives,
وَإِذْ أَسَرَّ ٱلنَّبِىُّ إِلَىٰ بَعْضِ أَزْوَٰجِهِۦ حَدِيثًۭا
and she informed others of it, and God uncovered it to him, he had part of it recognized and passed over another part.
فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَتْ بِهِۦ وَأَظْهَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ عَرَّفَ بَعْضَهُۥ وَأَعْرَضَ عَنۢ بَعْضٍۢ
Then, when he informed her of it, she said: "Who informed you of this?" He said: "The All-Knowing, the Intimately Acquainted informed me."
فَلَمَّا نَبَّأَهَا بِهِۦ قَالَتْ مَنْ أَنۢبَأَكَ هَٰذَا قَالَ نَبَّأَنِىَ ٱلْعَلِيمُ ٱلْخَبِيرُ
If you two turn back to God — for your cores have indeed bent —
إِن تَتُوبَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ فَقَدْ صَغَتْ قُلُوبُكُمَا
but if you support one another against him, then God is indeed his nearest Guarantor, and Jibril, and those who are sound among the believers,
وَإِن تَظَٰهَرَا عَلَيْهِ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ مَوْلَىٰهُ وَجِبْرِيلُ وَصَٰلِحُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
and the Agents, moreover, are his support.
وَٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ ظَهِيرٌ
It may be that his Guardian, if he repudiates you, will give him in exchange wives better than you: true to God alone, believing, devoted, repentant, obedient, free in their movement, previously married or virgins.
عَسَىٰ رَبُّهُۥٓ إِن طَلَّقَكُنَّ أَن يُبْدِلَهُۥٓ أَزْوَٰجًا خَيْرًۭا مِّنكُنَّ مُسْلِمَٰتٍۢ مُّؤْمِنَٰتٍۢ قَٰنِتَٰتٍۢ تَٰٓئِبَٰتٍ عَٰبِدَٰتٍۢ سَٰٓئِحَٰتٍۢ ثَيِّبَٰتٍۢ وَأَبْكَارًۭا
O you who have believed! Guard your Selves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is men and stones, over which are Agents, harsh and severe, who do not disobey God in what He commands them, and who do what they are commanded.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًۭا وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ وَٱلْحِجَارَةُ عَلَيْهَا مَلَٰٓئِكَةٌ غِلَاظٌۭ شِدَادٌۭ لَّا يَعْصُونَ ٱللَّهَ مَآ أَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ
O you who disowned! Do not make excuses today: you are only being recompensed for what you used to do.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَا تَعْتَذِرُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
O you who have believed! Turn back to God with a sincere turning back. It may be that your Guardian will cover your misdeeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow, on the day when God will not disgrace the Informant nor those who believed with him; their light will hurry before them and on their right.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوْبَةًۭ نَّصُوحًا عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يُكَفِّرَ عَنكُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْ وَيُدْخِلَكُمْ جَنَّٰتٍۢ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَٰرُ يَوْمَ لَا يُخْزِى ٱللَّهُ ٱلنَّبِىَّ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ نُورُهُمْ يَسْعَىٰ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَبِأَيْمَٰنِهِمْ
They will say: "Our Guardian, complete our light for us and forgive us."
يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ أَتْمِمْ لَنَا نُورَنَا وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَآ
You are indeed capable of all things.
إِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌۭ
O Informant! Strive against those who disown and the hypocrites, and be firm with them.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ جَٰهِدِ ٱلْكُفَّارَ وَٱلْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَٱغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ
And their resort will be Jahannam,
وَمَأْوَىٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ
and what an evil destination!
وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ
God multiplies an example for those who disowned: the wife of Nuh and the wife of Lut.
ضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًۭا لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ٱمْرَأَتَ نُوحٍۢ وَٱمْرَأَتَ لُوطٍۢ
They were under two of Our sound obedient ones, yet they betrayed them, so those two were of no avail to them against God,
كَانَتَا تَحْتَ عَبْدَيْنِ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا صَٰلِحَيْنِ فَخَانَتَاهُمَا فَلَمْ يُغْنِيَا عَنْهُمَا مِنَ ٱللَّهِ شَيْـًۭٔا
and it was said: "Enter, both of you, the Fire with those who enter."
وَقِيلَ ٱدْخُلَا ٱلنَّارَ مَعَ ٱلدَّٰخِلِينَ
And God multiplies an example for those who believe: the wife of Fir'awn, when she said: "My Guardian, build for me, near You, a house in the Garden, and save me from Fir'awn and his doing, and save me from the wrongdoing people."
وَضَرَبَ ٱللَّهُ مَثَلًۭا لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱمْرَأَتَ فِرْعَوْنَ إِذْ قَالَتْ رَبِّ ٱبْنِ لِى عِندَكَ بَيْتًۭا فِى ٱلْجَنَّةِ وَنَجِّنِى مِن فِرْعَوْنَ وَعَمَلِهِۦ وَنَجِّنِى مِنَ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
And Maryam, daughter of Imran, who protected her intimacy; We breathed into it of Our Influx. She declared true the words of her Guardian and His scriptures, and was among the devoted.
وَمَرْيَمَ ٱبْنَتَ عِمْرَٰنَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَحْصَنَتْ فَرْجَهَا فَنَفَخْنَا فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِنَا وَصَدَّقَتْ بِكَلِمَٰتِ رَبِّهَا وَكُتُبِهِۦ وَكَانَتْ مِنَ ٱلْقَٰنِتِينَ
