۞
Yusuf
-
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.i 1
These are the signs of the clear Scripture.i 1
We have sent it down as a flawless Recitation, perhaps you will reason.i 2
We relate to you the finest of accounts, by revealing to you this Recitation, though you were indeed, before it, among the heedless. 3
[Recall] when Youssof said to his father: "O my father, I saw eleven stars, and the sun and the moon,i 4
I saw them prostrate before me." 4
He said: "O my little one, do not relate your vision to your brothers, or they will devise a scheme against you:i 5
the Diverter is, to the human being, a declared enemy.i 5
And it is thus that your Guardian will elect you and teach you the interpretation of events,i 6
and He will complete His blessing upon you and upon the family of Yaacoub, as He completed it before upon your two ancestors, Ibrahim and Ishaq.i 6
Your Guardian is indeed Knowing, Wise. 6
There were indeed, in Youssof and his brothers, signs for those who ask.i 7
[Recall] when they said: "Youssof and his brother are dearer to our father than we, though we are a close-knit group:i 8
our father is indeed in manifest error. 8
Kill Youssof, or banish him to some land, so that your father's face may be freed for you alone, and that you may be, after that, righteous people."i 9
One of them said: "Do not kill Youssof, but throw him into the depths of the well: some caravan will pick him up, if you must act."i 10
They said: "O our father, what is it with you, that you do not trust us with Youssof, when we are indeed sincere counselors to him?i 11
Send him with us tomorrow, that he may enjoy himself and play; we will indeed be his guardians."i 12
He said: "It indeed grieves me that you take him, and I fear the wolf may devour him while you are inattentive." 13
They said: "If the wolf were to devour him, while we are a close-knit group, we would then indeed be losers." 14
When they took him away and agreed to put him in the depths of the well — and We revealed to him: "You will surely inform them of this affair, while they do not suspect it" —i 15
they came to their father in the evening, weeping, and said: "O our father, we went off racing and left Youssof with our belongings, and the wolf devoured him."i 17
But you will not believe us, even if we speak the truth. 17
They brought his shirt stained with false blood. 18
He said: "It is your Self that has suggested a course to you.i 18
Beautiful patience! 18
And it is with God that help must be sought against what you describe." 18
A caravan arrived; they sent their water-drawer, who let down his bucket. He said: "Good news! Here is a boy!"i 19
They hid him away as merchandise — 19
but God knew what they were doing. 19
And they sold him for a paltry price, a few counted coins: they attached little importance to him. 20
The one who bought him, in Egypt, said to his wife: "Treat him with regard; perhaps he will be useful to us, or we may adopt him as a son." 21
And thus We established Youssof on that land, and so as to teach him the interpretation of events —i 21
God is master of His purpose, 21
but most people do not know. 21
And when he reached his full maturity, We gave him judgment and knowledge:i 22
thus do We reward those who excel [in good]. 22
She in whose house he was sought to seduce him; she bolted the doors and said: "Come here."i 23
He said: "May God preserve me from that! 23
It is my Guardian who has made my stay excellent: 23
the unjust do not succeed." 23
She certainly desired him, 24
and he would have desired her had he not seen a proof of his Guardian:i 24
thus We turned away from him evil and indecency: 24
he was among Our purified obedient ones. 24
They both raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind, and they found her husband at the door. 25
She said: "What is the reward of one who intends evil against your family, except prison or a painful punishment?" 25
He said: "It is she who sought to seduce me." 26
A witness from her family bore witness: "If his shirt is torn from the front, she speaks truly, and he is among the liars; but if his shirt is torn from behind, she has lied, 27
and he is among the truthful." 27
When he saw that his shirt was torn from behind, he said: "This is of your guile, [women]: your guile is immense. 28
Youssof, turn away from this;i 29
and you, ask forgiveness for your wrong: you are indeed among the sinners." 29
Women, in the Capital, said: "The Minister's wife is seeking to seduce her young servant: he has indeed captivated her with love;i 30
we indeed see her in manifest error." 30
When she heard their malicious talk, she invited them and prepared a banquet for them; she gave each of them a knife, and said [to Youssof]: "Come out before them."i 31
When they saw him, they found him so great that they cut their hands, saying: "Far be it from God [such an imperfection]! This is no human being:i 31
this is nothing but a noble Agent."i 31
She said: "This is the one about whom you blamed me. 32
I indeed sought to seduce him, but he absolutely defended himself; 32
and if he does not do what I order him, he will surely be imprisoned, and will surely be among the humiliated." 32
He said: "My Guardian, prison is dearer to me than what they call me to; and if You do not turn their guile away from me, I would incline toward them and be among the ignorant." 33
His Guardian answered him and turned their guile away from him: 34
it is He, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 34
Then it seemed good to them, after seeing the proofs, to imprison him for a time. 35
Two young men entered the prison with him.i 36
One of them said: "I saw myself pressing wine." 36
The other said: "I saw myself carrying bread on my head, from which the birds were eating. 36
Inform us of its interpretation: we indeed see you among those who excel [in good]." 36
He said: "No food will be brought to you, destined for you, without my informing you of its interpretation before it reaches you: 37
that is part of what my Guardian has taught me. 37
I have left the doctrine of a people who do not believe in God, and who deny the last life,i 37
and I have followed the doctrine of my ancestors, Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Yaacoub:i 38
it is not for us to associate anything with God. 38
That is part of God's favor upon us and upon the people, 38
but most people are not grateful. 38
O my two prison companions, are divided masters better, or God, the One, the Subjugator? 39
What you obey, besides Him, is nothing but attributes you have named, you and your ancestors, without God having sent down any authority for it:i 40
judgment belongs only to God:i 40
He has commanded that you obey none but Him: 40
that is the upright Law,i 40
but most people do not know. 40
O my two prison companions, one of you will pour wine for his master; 41
as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. 41
The matter about which you both inquired is decided." 41
And he said to the one of the two he thought would be saved: "Remember me to your master." 42
But the Diverter made him forget to mention this to his master, and [Youssof] remained in prison for some years.i 42
And the king said: "I see seven fat cows being devoured by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and others withered: 43
O court, enlighten me about my vision, if you can interpret visions."i 43
They said: "A jumble of confused dreams, 44
and we are not versed in the interpretation of dreams." 44
The one of the two who had been saved said, remembering after a long while: "I will inform you of its interpretation: so send me forth." 45
"Youssof, man of truth, enlighten us about the seven fat cows devoured by seven lean ones, and the seven green ears of grain and others withered, so that I may return to the people and they may know."i 46
He said: "You shall cultivate for seven years, unremittingly; 47
and what you have harvested, leave it in its ear, except the little that you eat. 47
Then there will come, after that, seven harsh years, which will consume what you had stored for them, except the little you set aside. 48
Then there will come, after that, a year in which the people will be relieved by rain, and in which they will press [the fruits]." 49
And the king said: "Bring him to me." 50
When the envoy came to him, he said: "Return to your master, and ask him about the women who cut their hands:i 50
my Guardian well knows their guile." 50
He said: "What was your affair, when you sought to seduce Youssof?"i 51
They said: "Far be it from God, such an imperfection! We know no evil of him."i 51
The Minister's wife said: "Now the truth comes out: it is I who sought to seduce him, and he is indeed among the truthful.i 51
This, so that he may know that I did not betray him in his absence, and that God does not guide the guile of traitors.i 52
I do not absolve myself: 53
the Self indeed incites to evil, except one to whom my Guardian shows benevolence.i 53
My Guardian is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence." 53
And the king said: "Bring him to me: I shall attach him to my own person." 54
When he had spoken to him, he said: "You are, today, with us, in a position of authority, trustworthy."i 54
He said: "Place me in charge of the treasuries of this land: I am indeed a knowledgeable guardian." 55
And thus We established Youssof on that land, settling there wherever he wished:i 56
We grant Our benevolence to whom We will, and We do not let go to waste the reward of those who excel [in good]. 56
And the reward of the last life is indeed better for those who believe and guard themselves. 57
The brothers of Youssof came [to Egypt] and entered upon him; he recognized them, but they did not recognize him.i 58
When he had provided them with their supplies, he said: "Bring me a brother of yours from your father's side. 59
Do you not see that I give full measure and am the best of hosts? 59
And if you do not bring him to me, you will have no more measure with me, and you shall not approach me again." 60
They said: "We shall seek to obtain him from his father, we shall indeed do it." 61
He said to his servants: "Put their merchandise back in their saddlebags, perhaps they will recognize it when they return to their people, perhaps they will come back."i 62
When they returned to their father, they said: "O our father, measure has been withheld from us; so send our brother with us, we shall obtain measure, and we shall indeed be his guardians." 63
He said: "Shall I trust you with him, as I trusted you before with his brother? 64
God is the best guardian,i 64
and He is the most benevolent of the benevolent." 64
When they opened their baggage, they found their merchandise, which had been returned to them. They said: "O our father, what more could we want? 65
Here is our merchandise, returned to us; we shall provide for our family, guard our brother, and obtain an extra camel-load: 65
that is an easy measure." 65
He said: "I will not send him with you, until you bring me a solemn pledge before God, that you will bring him back to me, unless you are surrounded." 66
When they had brought him their pledge, he said: "God is agent over what we say."i 66
He said: "O my sons, do not enter by a single gate, but enter by separate gates; 67
I can be of no use to you against God: 67
judgment belongs only to God;i 67
in Him I place my trust, 67
and let those who place their trust [in God] place it in Him." 67
When they entered as their father had commanded them, it was of no use to them against God, except for a need in Yaacoub's Self, which he satisfied;i 68
he indeed possessed knowledge We had taught him, 68
but most people do not know. 68
When they entered upon Youssof, he took his brother in with him,i 69
and said: "I am, indeed, your brother: so do not be distressed at what they were doing." 69
When he had provided them with their supplies, he placed the cup in his brother's bag; then a herald cried out: "O caravan, you are indeed thieves!" 70
They said, turning toward them: "What are you searching for?" 71
They said: "We seek the king's cup; 72
whoever brings it will have a camel-load, and I vouch for it." 72
They said: "By God, you well know we did not come to spread corruption on this land, and we are not thieves." 73
They said: "What then will be his penalty, if you are liars?" 74
They said: "His penalty: he in whose bag it is found shall himself be the penalty. 75
Thus do we requite the unjust." 75
He began with their bags before his brother's bag, then drew it out of his brother's bag: 76
thus had We devised for Youssof:i 76
he could not, under the king's law, seize his brother, unless God willed it.i 76
We raise in degrees whom We will, 76
and above every possessor of knowledge, there is one [more] knowing. 76
They said: "If he has stolen, a brother of his had already stolen before." 77
Youssof kept this secret within himself and did not reveal it to them;i 77
he said: "You are in the worst of positions, 77
and God knows best what you describe." 77
They said: "O Minister, he has a very old father; so take one of us in his place: we indeed see you among those who excel [in good]."i 78
He said: "May God preserve us from taking anyone other than the one with whom we found our property: we would then indeed be unjust." 79
When they had lost all hope of him, they withdrew into confidential converse.i 80
The eldest among them said: "Do you not know that your father took a solemn pledge from you before God,i 80
and that before this you failed in your duty toward Youssof?i 80
I shall not leave this land, then, until my father permits me, or God judges in my favor: 80
He is the best of judges. 80
Return to your father, and say: 'O our father, your son has stolen; 81
and we attest only to what we know, and we could not guard what escaped the senses.i 81
Ask the city where we were, and the caravan with which we returned: we are indeed truthful.'" 82
He said: "Rather, your own Self has suggested a course to you.i 83
Beautiful patience! 83
It may be that God will bring them all back to me: 83
it is He, the Knowing, the Wise." 83
And he turned away from them and said: "O my grief, for Youssof!"i 84
And his eyes turned white from grief, while he suppressed his sorrow.i 84
They said: "By God, you will not cease to recall Youssof, until you are worn out or until you perish."i 85
He said: "I complain of my anguish and my grief only to God, 86
and I know, from God, what you do not know. 86
O my sons, go and inquire about Youssof and his brother, and do not despair of God's Influx:i 87
none despairs of God's Influx, except the people who deny."i 87
When they entered upon him, they said: "O Minister, misfortune has touched us and our family, and we have come with merchandise of little value:i 88
so give us full measure, and be charitable to us: 88
God indeed rewards those who give charity." 88
He said: "Do you know what you did to Youssof and his brother, in your ignorance?"i 89
They said: "Is it you, Youssof?"i 90
He said: "I am Youssof, and this is my brother.i 90
God has indeed favored us: 90
whoever guards himself and is patient — God does not let go to waste the reward of those who excel [in good]." 90
They said: "By God, God has indeed preferred you over us, and we were indeed at fault." 91
He said: "No reproach upon you, today: 92
may God forgive you, 92
He is the most benevolent of the benevolent. 92
Go with this shirt of mine, and lay it upon my father's face: he will regain his sight. Then bring me your whole family." 93
When the caravan had set off, their father said: "I indeed sense the scent of Youssof, if you do not think me a dotard."i 94
They said: "By God, you are indeed in your old error." 95
When the bearer of good news arrived, he laid it upon his face, and he at once regained his sight. 96
He said: "Did I not tell you that I know, from God, what you do not know?" 96
They said: "O our father, ask forgiveness for our wrongs: we were indeed at fault." 97
He said: "I shall soon ask forgiveness for you from my Guardian: 98
it is He, the Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence." 98
When they entered upon Youssof, he took his two parents in with him, and said: "Enter Egypt, if God wills, in security."i 99
And he raised his two parents upon the Edifice, and they fell down before him in prostration.i 100
He said: "O my father, this is the interpretation of my vision of old: my Guardian has made it true. 100
He has been good to me, when He brought me out of prison, and brought you from the countryside, after the Diverter had sown discord between me and my brothers.i 100
My Guardian is indeed subtle in what He wills: 100
it is He, the Knowing, the Wise. 100
My Guardian, You have granted me a share of sovereignty, and taught me the interpretation of events. 101
Creator of the heavens and the earth, You are my protector in the present life and in the last life: cause me to die true to You alone, and join me with the righteous."i 101
