۞
Al-Baqara
-
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim.i 1
This is the Scripture: no doubt possible,i 2
guidance for those who guard themselves, who believe in God even though He escapes their senses, maintain the Contact, and spend from what We have provided them as sustenance,i 3
and those who believe in what has been revealed to you and in what was revealed before you, and who possess certainty of the last life — those are the ones who are upon guidance from their Guardian, 5
and those are the ones who succeed. 5
Those who deny-disown, it is the same to them whether you warn them or not: they do not believe. 6
God has sealed their cores and their hearing, 7
and over their sights, a veil; 7
and they will have an immense punishment. 7
And among the people, there are some who say: "We believe in God and the Last Day", when they are not believers. 8
They seek to deceive God and those who have believed, 9
but they deceive none but themselves, without perceiving it. 9
There is, in their cores, a sickness, 10
and God has increased them in sickness; 10
and they will have a painful punishment, for having lied. 10
And when it is said to them: "Do not sow corruption on the earth", they say: "We are only setting things right." 11
Is it not rather they who are the sowers of corruption? But they do not perceive it. 12
And when it is said to them: "Believe as the people have believed", they say: "Should we believe as the fools have believed?" 13
Is it not rather they who are the fools? But they do not know. 13
And when they meet those who have believed, they say: "We have believed"; 14
and when they are alone with their diverters, they say: "We are with you, we are only mocking."i 14
God mocks them, and lets them prolong their blind wandering in their tyranny. 15
Those are the ones who bought error at the price of guidance; their trade did not, then, profit, and they were not rightly guided. 16
Their likeness is that of one who kindles a fire; when it has illuminated what is around him, 17
God takes away their light and leaves them in darknesses where they no longer see. 17
Deaf, mute, blind, they do not, then, turn back [on their way]. 18
Or like a torrential rain from the sky, in which there are darknesses, thunder, and lightning: 19
they put their fingers in their ears, because of the thunderclaps, out of fear of death. 19
God encompasses perfectly those who deny-disown. 19
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. 20
Every time it lights up for them, they walk on; 20
and when it darkens over them, they stand still. 20
And had God willed, He would certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight. 20
God has power over all things. 20
O mankind! obey your Guardian, who created you and those before you, perhaps you will guard yourselves, 21
He who made for you the earth a bed, and the sky a structure, and who sent down from the sky water, by which He brought forth fruits as sustenance for you. 22
So do not attribute to God equals, while you know. 22
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our obedient one, bring, then, a sourate like it, 23
and call your witnesses, besides God, if you are truthful. 23
If you do not do it — and you will never do it — guard yourselves, then, against the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, 24
prepared for those who deny-disown. 24
And announce to those who have believed and done righteous deeds that they will have gardens beneath which rivers flow. 25
Every time they receive a fruit therein as sustenance, they say: "This is what we were given as sustenance before"; 25
and it is given to them, resembling [what they knew]. 25
They will have therein purified spouses, 25
and they will abide therein eternally. 25
God is not ashamed to multiply an image, be it that of a gnat or something greater. 26
Those who have believed then know that it is the truth from their Guardian; 26
and as for those who deny-disown, they say: "What did God intend by this image?" 26
He leads astray by it many, and guides by it many; 26
and He leads astray by it only the oversteppers, those who break the engagement of God after it was concluded, sever what God ordered to be joined, and sow corruption on the earth. 27
Those are the losers. 27
How can you deny-disown God, when you were dead and He gave you life; then He will cause you to die, 28
then He will bring you back to life, then it is to Him that you will be returned? 28
It is He who created for you all that is on the earth, 29
then He established Himself toward the sky, and made of it seven heavens harmoniously arranged; 29
and He is, of all things, All-Knowing. 29
And remember when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am going to establish a successor on the earth."i 30
They said: "Will You establish therein one who will sow corruption in it and shed blood, while we celebrate Your praise, glorifying You, and proclaim Your holiness?" 30
He said: "I know what you do not know." 30
And He taught Adam all the attributes, then He presented them to the Agents, and said: "Inform Me of the attributes of these, if you are truthful."i 31
They said: "Glory be to You! we have no knowledge except what You have taught us; You are, You, the All-Knowing, the Wise." 32
He said: "O Adam! inform them of their attributes."i 33
And when he had informed them of their attributes, He said: "Did I not tell you that I know what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth, and that I know what you show and what you were hiding?"i 33
And remember when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam"; they prostrated,i 34
except the Despairing One [Iblis]: he refused, was arrogant, and was among those who deny-disown.i 34
And We said: "O Adam! dwell, you and your spouse, in the Garden, and eat from it, at your ease, wherever you wish,i 35
but do not approach this tree, lest you be among the unjust." 35
But the Diverter made them slip out of it, and drove them out of the state they were in;i 36
and We said: "Descend, 36
you will be enemies to one another, 36
and you will have, on the earth, a dwelling and an enjoyment for a time." 36
Then Adam received from his Guardian words, and He turned toward him with clemency.i 37
He is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 37
We said: "Descend from it, all together; 38
then, if guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve. 38
And those who deny-disown and deny Our signs — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally." 39
O children of Israel! remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and keep My engagement, I will keep yours; and it is Me alone that you should dread. 40
And believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and do not be the first to deny-disown it; 41
and do not buy, with My signs, a paltry price; and it is Me alone toward whom you should guard yourselves.i 41
And do not cover the truth with falsehood, and do not hide the truth, while you know. 42
And maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms, 43
and bow with those who bow. 43
Will you order righteousness upon people, while forgetting yourselves, when you recite the Scripture?i 44
Will you not then reason? 44
And seek help in patience and the Contact:i 45
that is indeed heavy, except for the humble, those who think that they will meet their Guardian, and that it is to Him that they return. 46
O children of Israel! remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and that I favored you above all beings.i 47
And guard yourselves against a day when no Self will avail another Self in anything, when no intercession will be accepted from it, when no compensation will be taken from it, and when they will not be helped. 48
And remember when We saved you from the clan of Fir'awn, who inflicted upon you the worst of punishments, slaughtering your sons and violating the modesty of your women — 49
and there was in that, for you, an immense trial from your Guardian.i 49
And remember when We split the sea for you, and saved you, and drowned the clan of Fir'awn, while you looked on. 50
And remember when We appointed for Moussa forty nights; then you took the calf [as a deity], after him, and you were unjust.i 51
Then We pardoned you after that, perhaps you would be grateful.i 52
And remember when We gave Moussa the Scripturei 53
and the Discernment, perhaps you would be rightly guided.i 53
And remember when Moussa said to his people: "O my people! you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf [as a deity]; turn back, then, to your Originator, and kill yourselves, 54
that is better for you with your Originator."i 54
He turned toward you with clemency, then: 54
He is indeed the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 54
And remember when you said: "O Moussa! we will not believe you until we see God openly"; the thunderbolt seized you then, while you looked on. 55
Then We resurrected you after your death, perhaps you would be grateful.i 56
And We spread over you the shade of the cloud, and sent down upon you manna and quails: 57
"Eat of the good things We have provided you as sustenance" — 57
they did not wrong Us, but it was themselves that they wronged. 57
And remember when We said: "Enter this city, eat from it wherever you wish, at your ease, enter by the gate bowing down, and say: Relieve us [of our faults] — We will forgive you your faults, 58
and We will increase [the reward] of those who do good." 58
But those who were unjust substituted a saying other than what had been said to them; We then sent down upon those who had been unjust a defilement from the sky, for having overstepped. 59
And remember when Moussa asked for water for his people; We said: "Strike the rock with your staff"; 60
and behold, twelve springs gushed forth from it:i 60
each group of people knew its drinking place. 60
Eat and drink of God's sustenance, 60
and do not spread disorder on the earth by spreading corruption in it. 60
And remember when you said: "O Moussa! we can never endure a single kind of food; invoke, then, your Guardian for us, that He bring forth for us of what the earth grows, of its herbs, its cucumbers, its garlic, its lentils, and its onions."i 61
He said: "Would you exchange what is near [and immediate] for what is better?i 61
Go down, then, to Egypt, you will find there what you have asked."i 61
And humiliation and misery were imprinted upon them, and they incurred the anger of God. 61
That is because they used to deny-disown the signs of God, and kill the prophets without right. 61
It is for having disobeyed and transgressed. 61
Those who have believed, the Reoriented, the Helpers, and the Aspirants — whoever has believed in God and the Last Day, and done righteous work, their reward is theirs with their Guardian, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.i 62
And remember when We took your engagement, and raised above you the Mount: 63
"Take with strength what We have given you, and remember what is in it, perhaps you will guard yourselves." 63
Then you turned away after that; 64
and without God's favor upon you and His benevolence, you would have been among the losers. 64
You have indeed known those among you who transgressed concerning the sabt [the act of rest/inaction]; We then said to them: "Be apes, rejected." 65
We made of it an exemplary punishment for what surrounded it and what followed, and an admonition for those who guard themselves. 66
And remember when Moussa said to his people: "God orders you to slaughter a cow."i 67
They said: "Do you take us in mockery?" 67
He said: "I seek refuge in God against being among the ignorant." 67
They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us what it is." 68
He said: "He says she is a cow neither old nor virgin, 68
of middle age between the two; 68
do, then, what you are ordered." 68
They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us her color." 69
He said: "He says she is a yellow cow, of a vivid yellow, 69
which delights the eyes." 69
They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us what she is: the cows all resemble one another to us, and we will, if God wills, be rightly guided." 70
He said: "He says she is a cow not broken to plow the earth or water the crops, 71
unblemished, without any spot." 71
They said: "Now you bring the truth." 71
They slaughtered her then, after having very nearly not done it. 71
And remember when you killed a Self, and cast [the blame] on one another concerning it — 72
but God was going to bring out what you were hiding. 72
We then said: "Strike him [the dead man] with a part [of the cow]"; 73
thus does God give life to the dead, and show you His signs, perhaps you will reason. 73
Then your cores hardened after that, so that they are like stone, or harder still. 74
There are indeed, among stones, those from which rivers burst forth; 74
and there are indeed, among them, those which split, and water comes out of them; 74
and there are indeed, among them, those which fall, out of fear of God. 74
And God is not heedless of what you do. 74
Would you covet, then, that they believe for your sake, when a group among them used to hear the word of God, then displace it from its context, after having understood it, while knowing? 75
And when they meet those who have believed, they say: "We have believed"; 76
and when they are alone with one another, they say: "Will you relate to them what God has revealed to you, that they may dispute with you about it before your Guardian?" 76
Will you not then reason? 76
Do they not know, then, that God knows what they hide and what they disclose? 77
And among them, there are people without a prior Scripture, who know the Scripture only through vain wishes,i 78
and who only conjecture. 78
Woe, then, to those who write the Scripture with their hands, then say: "This is from God", to sell it for a small price!i 79
Woe to them for what their hands have written, 79
and woe to them for what they earn! 79
And they said: "The Fire will touch us only for a counted number of days." 80
Say: "Have you taken an engagement with God — God never fails His engagement —, 80
or do you say about God what you do not know?" 80
But yes: whoever acquires an evil deed, and whose offense envelops him entirely — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally. 81
And those who have believed and done righteous deeds — those are the companions of the Garden, they abide therein eternally. 82
And remember when We took the engagement of the Children of Israel: "You shall obey none but God, 83
and kindness toward the two parents, relatives, orphans, and the destitute; 83
and speak good words to people; 83
and maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms"; 83
then you turned away, except a few of you, evading. 83
And remember when We took your engagement: "You shall not shed your blood, and shall not expel yourselves from your dwellings"; then you acknowledged it, and you are witnesses to it. 84
Then here you are, nonetheless, killing one another, and expelling a group of your own from their dwellings, banding together against them in transgression and hostility;i 85
and if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, even though their expulsion was forbidden to you. 85
Would you believe, then, in part of the Scripture, and deny-disown another part?i 85
What, then, is the reward of whoever among you acts thus, but disgrace in the present life? 85
And on the Day of Appearance, they will be cast back to the most severe of punishments. 85
And God is not heedless of what you do. 85
Those are the ones who bought the present life at the price of the last life; the punishment will, then, not be lightened for them, and they will not be helped. 86
We indeed gave Moussa the Scripture, and We made other messengers follow after him.i 87
And We gave Issa, son of Maryam, the clear proofs, and We reinforced him with the sacred Influx.i 87
Every time a messenger came to you with what your own Selves did not desire, did you not become arrogant? 87
You denied a group of them, and you kill another. 87
And they said: "Our cores are wrapped up"; 88
no, God cursed them for their denial-disowning, and they believe only a little. 88
And when a scripture came to them from God, confirming what is with them — though before they used to ask for victory over those who denied-disowned —,i 89
when, then, there came to them what they recognized, they denied-disowned it. 89
The curse of God is, then, upon those who deny-disown. 89
How evil is what they sold their own Selves for: to deny-disown what God sent down, out of transgression, [resenting] that God should send down of His favor upon whom He wills among His obedient ones! 90
They incurred, then, anger upon anger. 90
And for those who deny-disown, a humiliating punishment. 90
And when it is said to them: "Believe in what God has sent down", they say: "We believe in what was sent down upon us"; and they deny-disown what came after. 91
and it is the truth, confirming what is with them. 91
Say: "Why, then, did you kill the prophets of God, before, if you were believers?" 91
Moussa indeed came to you with the clear proofs; then you took the calf [as a deity], after him, and you were unjust.i 92
And remember when We took your engagement, and raised above you the Mount: 93
"Take with strength what We have given you, and listen." 93
They said: "We have heard and disobeyed". 93
and their cores were made to drink in the calf, because of their denial-disowning. 93
Say: "How evil is what your faith orders you, if you are believers!" 93
Say: "If the last abode, with God, is reserved exclusively for you, to the exclusion of mankind, wish, then, for death, if you are truthful." 94
But they will never wish for it, for what their hands have prepared. 95
God knows perfectly the unjust. 95
You will certainly find them the most attached of people to life, 96
even more than those who have associated; one of them would like to live a thousand years, 96
but that would not remove him at all from the punishment, even if he lived that long. 96
God sees perfectly what they do. 96
Say: "Whoever is an enemy of Jibril should know that it is he who brought it down upon your core, with God's permission, confirming what precedes it, and as a guidance and good tidings for the believers."i 97
Whoever is an enemy of God, His Agents, His messengers, Jibril, and Mikal should know that God is the enemy of those who deny-disown.i 98
We have indeed sent down to you clear signs, 99
and only the oversteppers deny them. 99
Is it that, every time they conclude an engagement, a group among them casts it aside? 100
Most of them, rather, do not believe. 100
And when a messenger came to them from God, confirming what is with them, a group of those to whom the Scripture was given cast the Scripture of God behind their backs, as if they did not know.i 101
And they followed what the diverters recited concerning the kingdom of Sulayman.i 102
But Sulayman never denied-disowned,i 102
but it is the diverters who denied-disowned, teaching people illusion, and what was sent down upon the two kings at Babel, Harut and Marut;i 102
and those two did not teach anyone without first saying: "We are only a trial, do not deny-disown, then." 102
They learned from them, then, that by which they sow discord between a man and his spouse; 102
but they harm no one by that, except with God's permission. 102
And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. 102
They indeed knew that whoever acquired it would have, in the last life, no share. 102
How evil is what they sold their own Selves for, had they known! 102
And had they believed and guarded themselves, a reward from God would indeed have been better, had they known. 103
O you who have believed! do not say "Disdain us", but say "Look at us", and listen.i 104
And for those who deny-disown, a painful punishment. 104
Neither those who deny-disown, among the people of the Scripture, nor the associators wish that any good be sent down upon you from your Guardian;i 105
but God reserves His benevolence for whom He wills. 105
God holds the immense favor. 105
Whatever sign We copy, or leave to be forgotten, We bring one better than it, or similar to it.i 106
Do you not know that God has power over all things? 106
Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that you have, besides God, neither protector nor helper? 107
Would you question your messenger as Moussa was questioned before?i 108
And whoever exchanges denial-disowning for faith has indeed strayed from the straight path. 108
Many, among the people of the Scripture, would like to bring you back, after your faith, to a denial-disowning,i 109
out of envy, from themselves, after the truth has become clear to them. 109
Forgive, then, and overlook, until God brings His command. 109
God has power over all things. 109
And maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms. 110
And whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God. 110
God sees perfectly what you do. 110
And they said: "None will enter the Garden, except one who belongs to the Reoriented or the Helpers." 111
Those are their vain wishes. 111
Say: "Bring your proof, if you are truthful." 111
But rather: whoever renders his direction integral toward God, while doing good, has his reward with his Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not be grieved. 112
And the Reoriented said: "The Helpers rest on nothing"; and the Helpers said: "The Reoriented rest on nothing"; while they recite the Scripture.i 113
Thus spoke those who do not know, holding a saying similar to theirs. 113
God will judge between them, on the Day of Appearance, concerning what they used to differ over. 113
And who is then more unjust than one who prevents God's name from being mentioned in God's places of prostration, and strives for their ruin? 114
Those should not enter them except fearful. 114
They have, in the present life, a humiliation, 114
and they will have, in the last life, an immense punishment. 114
And to God belong the east and the west: 115
wherever you turn, there is the direction of God. 115
God is Vast, All-Knowing. 115
And they said: "God has taken a child." 116
Glory be to Him! 116
To Him, rather, belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth; 116
everything is devoted to Him. 116
Unprecedented Creator of the heavens and the earth. 117
When He decrees a thing, He only says to it: "Be", 117
and it is. 117
And those who do not know said: "Why does God not speak to us, or why does a sign not come to us!" 118
Thus spoke those before them, holding a saying similar to theirs; 118
their cores resemble one another. 118
We have indeed made the signs clear for a people who possess certainty. 118
We have sent you, in truth, as a bearer of good tidings and a warner, 119
and you will not be questioned about the companions of the Blaze. 119
And neither the Reoriented nor the Helpers will ever be satisfied with you, until you follow their Law. 120
Say: "The guidance of God, that is the [true] guidance." 120
And were you to follow their emotions, after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have, against God, neither protector nor helper. 120
Those to whom We have given the Scripture, and who recite it as it should be recited, those are the ones who believe in it.i 121
And whoever denies-disowns it — those are the losers. 121
O children of Israel! remember My blessing, that with which I blessed you, and that I favored you above all beings. 122
And guard yourselves against a day when no Self will avail another Self in anything, when no compensation will be accepted from it, when no intercession will benefit it, and when they will not be helped. 123
And remember when the Guardian of Ibrahim tried him with words, which he fulfilled completely.i 124
He said: "I am going to make you a guide for mankind." 124
He said: "And among my descendants?" 124
He said: "My engagement does not reach the unjust." 124
And remember when We made the House a place of return for mankind, and a security; and take, from the station of Ibrahim, a place of Contact.i 125
And We engaged Ibrahim and Isma'il: "Purify My House for those who frequent it, those who dwell there permanently, and those who bow in service and submit in allegiance."i 125
And remember when Ibrahim said: "My Guardian, make of this a secure land, and provide of its fruits as sustenance to its inhabitants, to those among them who believe in God and the Last Day."i 126
He said: "And whoever denies-disowns, I grant him a brief enjoyment, then I compel him toward the punishment of the Fire." 126
And what an evil destination! 126
And remember when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House, with Isma'il:i 127
"Our Guardian, accept this from us; You are, You, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 127
Our Guardian, make us both true to You alone, and, of our descendants, a community true to You alone. 128
And show us our beneficent practices. 128
And turn toward us with clemency. 128
You are, You, the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 128
Our Guardian, and raise up among them a messenger, from among themselves, who recites Your signs to them, teaches them the Scripture and the wisdom, and purifies them.i 129
You are, You, the All-Powerful, the Wise." 129
And who, then, turns away from the creed of Ibrahim, but one who despises his own Self?i 130
We indeed chose him in the present life, 130
and in the last life, he will indeed be among the righteous. 130
remember when his Guardian said to him: "Be true to Me alone"; 131
he said: "I am true to the Guardian of all beings alone." 131
And Ibrahim made this a recommendation to his sons,i 132
and so did Yaacoub: "O my sons! God has chosen this Law for you; do not die, then, except being true to Him alone." 132
Were you witnesses, when death presented itself to Yaacoub, when he said to his sons: "What will you obey after me?" 133
They said: "We will obey your deity, the deity of your ancestors, Ibrahim, Isma'il, and Ishaq, one deity, and to Him we are true."i 133
That is a community that has already passed: 134
to it what it earned, 134
and to you what you earned; 134
and you will not be questioned about what they used to do. 134
And they said: "Be Reoriented or Helpers, you will be rightly guided." 135
Say: "No, rather the doctrine of Ibrahim, wholly turned toward God,"i 135
and he was not among those who associate. 135
Say: "We believe in God, in what has been revealed to us, in what was revealed to Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the tribes, and in what was given to Moussa and Issa, and in what was given to the prophets, from their Guardian; we make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we are true."i 136
If they believe in what you have believed, they are then rightly guided; 137
and if they turn away, they are then only in a rupture; 137
God will soon suffice you against them: 137
He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 137
The dye of God — 138
and who dyes better than God? — 138

and it is Him that we obey. 138
Say: "Do you dispute with us about God, when He is our Guardian and your Guardian? To us our deeds, and to you your deeds, 139
and to Him we are devoted." 139
Or do you say that Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the tribes were Reoriented or Helpers? 140
Say: "Is it you who know best, or God?" 140
And who, then, is more unjust than one who hides a testimony he holds from God? 140
And God is not heedless of what you do. 140
That is a community that has already passed: 141
to it what it earned, 141
and to you what you earned; 141
and you will not be questioned about what they used to do. 141
The fools, among the people, will say: "What has turned them away from their anchor point, the one they used to be upon?"i 142
Say: "To God belong the east and the west; 142
He guides whom He wills to a straight path." 142
And thus have We made you an exemplary community,i 143
so that you may be witnesses against mankind, and the messenger a witness against you.i 143
And We had established the anchor point, the one you were upon, only to distinguish who follows the messenger from who turns back on his heels. 143
That was indeed heavy, except for those God has guided. 143
And it is not for God to let your faith be lost. 143
God is indeed, toward mankind, full of bonté, full of benevolence. 143
We indeed see, from the sky, this [coming] turning about of your face [a refugee in search of guidance, no longer knowing where to turn]; We will direct you, then, toward an anchor point that will suit you [as a final destination].i 144
Set your course, then, for the inviolable place of prostration,i 144
and wherever you are, set your course for this anchor point. 144
Those to whom the Scripture was given indeed know that it is the truth from their Guardian.i 144
And God is not heedless of what they do. 144
And even if you brought to those to whom the Scripture was given every sign, they would not follow your anchor point.i 145
And you will not follow their anchor point; 145
nor do they follow, some of them, the anchor point of others. 145
And were you to follow their emotions, after what has come to you of knowledge, you would then indeed be among the unjust. 145
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own children,i 146
and a group among them indeed hides the truth, while knowing. 146
The truth comes from your Guardian; 147
so never be among those who doubt. 147
And to each a direction that he adopts; race, then, in good deeds. 148
Wherever you are, God will bring you all back. 148
God has power over all things. 148
And from wherever you come out, set your course for the inviolable place of prostration: 149
it is indeed the truth from your Guardian. 149
And God is not heedless of what you do. 149
And from wherever you come out, set your course for the inviolable place of prostration, 150
and wherever you are, set your course for this anchor point, so that people may have no argument against you — except those among them who are unjust; do not fear them, then, but fear Me —i 150
and so that I may complete My blessing upon you, and perhaps you will be rightly guided, 150
as We have sent, among you, a messenger from among yourselves, who recites Our signs to you, purifies you, teaches you the Scripture and the wisdom, and teaches you what you did not know. Remember Me, then, I will remember you; be grateful to Me, and do not deny-disown Me.i 152
O you who have believed! seek help in patience and the Contact: 153
God is with the patient. 153
And do not say of those who are killed in the way of God that they are dead. 154
No, they are alive, but you do not perceive it. 154
We will certainly try you with some fear, hunger, loss of possessions, persons, and fruits; 155
and give good news to the patient, those who, when misfortune strikes them, say: "We are God's, and it is to Him that we return." 156
Those are the ones upon whom rest blessings from their Guardian, and a benevolence, 157
and those are the ones who are rightly guided. 157
Safa and Marwa are indeed among the perceptible markers of God.i 158
Whoever performs the Hajj of the House — a debt owed to God — or performs the Umra, no blame upon him for visiting them. 158
And whoever does good willingly — God is Grateful, All-Knowing. 158
Those who hide what We have sent down of clear proofs and guidance, after We have made it clear to mankind in the Scripture — those are the ones God curses, and whom those who curse, curse,i 159
except those who turn back [to God], reform, and make [the truth] clear: those are the ones toward whom I turn with clemency; I am the Ever-Accepter of repentance, full of benevolence. 160
Those who deny-disown and die while denying-disowning — those are the ones upon whom weighs the curse of God, the Agents, and mankind, all together, wherein they will abide eternally;i 162
the punishment will not be lightened for them, and they will not be granted a delay. 162
And your deity is one deity; 163
there is no deity but Him, 163
the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. 163
There are indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of night and day, in the ship that sails at sea laden with what benefits mankind, in the water that God sends down from the sky and by which He gives life to the earth after its death, spreading in it every kind of living being, in the diversity of the winds, and in the cloud subjected between the sky and the earth — signs for a people who reason. 164
And among the people, there are some who take, besides God, equals, whom they love as one loves God; 165
but those who have believed are even more intense in the love of God. 165
If the unjust could see, when they see the punishment, that power belongs to God in its entirety, and that God is severe in punishment — 165
[they would see it] when those who were followed will disavow those who followed them, and they will see the punishment, and the bonds between them will be severed. 166
And those who followed will say: "If only we had a return, we would disavow them as they have disavowed us." 167
Thus does God show them their works, as bitter regrets for them, 167
and they will never leave the Fire. 167
O mankind! eat of what is on the earth, lawful and good, 168
and do not follow the footsteps of the Diverter:i 168
he is for you a manifest enemy. 168
He orders you only evil and indecency, and to say about God what you do not know. 169
And when it is said to them: "Follow what God has sent down", they say: "No, we follow what we found our ancestors upon." 170
What! even if their ancestors reasoned nothing and were not rightly guided? 170
And the likeness of those who deny-disown is that of one who cries out to what hears nothing but a call and a shout. 171
Deaf, mute, blind, they do not, then, reason. 171
O you who have believed! eat of the good things We have provided you as sustenance, and be grateful toward God, if it is Him alone that you obey. 172
He has forbidden you only the dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been consecrated to other than God.i 173
But whoever is compelled to it, without being rebellious or transgressing, no transgression upon him. 173
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 173
Those who hide what God has sent down of the Scripture, and sell it for a small price — those are the ones who swallow nothing into their bellies but the Fire; God will not speak to them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them,i 174
and they will have a painful punishment. 174
Those are the ones who bought error at the price of guidance, and punishment at the price of forgiveness. What, then, makes them so enduring in the face of the Fire! 175
That is because God sent down the Scripture in truth,i 176
and those who differ about the Scripture are indeed in a deep rupture.i 176
Righteousness does not consist in turning your faces toward the east or the west, 177
but righteousness is one who believes in God, the Last Day, the Agents, the Scripture, and the prophets, and who gives of his wealth, despite his love for it, to relatives, orphans, the destitute, the stranded traveler, those who ask, and for freeing those under the burden of a debt, who maintains the Contact and gives the purifying alms,i 177
those who keep their engagement when they have engaged themselves, 177
and the patient in hardship, distress, and the hour of violence: 177
those are the ones who have been truthful, 177
and those are the ones who guard themselves. 177
O you who have believed! the investigation is prescribed for you concerning those killed: 178
the free man [independent] with the free man [independent], the obedient one [salaried] with the obedient one [salaried], and the woman with the woman.i 178
But if a remission is granted [to the offender] by his brother [in humanity, not a brother in the familial sense], then a pursuit [of the compensation] according to what is recognized, and a settlement in good grace.i 178
That is a lightening from your Guardian, and a benevolence. 178
And whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment. 178
And you have, in the investigation, a life, O possessors of intelligence, perhaps you will guard yourselves. 179
It is prescribed for you, when death presents itself to one of you, if he leaves goods, 180
the testament in favor of the two parents and relatives, according to what is recognized: 180
a duty upon those who guard themselves. 180
And whoever modifies it after having heard it, the transgression thereof falls only upon those who modify it. 181
God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 181
But whoever fears, on the part of a testator, a partiality or a transgression, and reconciles them, no transgression upon him. 182
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 182
O you who have believed! abstention is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, perhaps you will guard yourselves, for a number of counted days. 184
And whoever among you is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days; 184
and for those who have the capacity for it, a compensation, the feeding of a destitute person. 184
And whoever does good willingly, it is better for him; 184
and that you abstain is better for you, if you knew. 184
The month of refreshment, that in which this Recitation was revealed, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of guidance and the Discernment.i 185
Whoever among you attests the beginning of that month, let him abstain in it;i 185
and whoever is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days. 185
God wants for you ease, He does not want for you hardship, 185
and [He wants] that you bring the count of days to its completion, and that you proclaim the greatness of God for having guided you, perhaps you will be grateful.i 185
And when My obedient ones ask you about Me, I am near: 186
I answer the call of the one who calls upon Me, when he calls upon Me. 186
Let them, then, respond to My call, and believe in Me, perhaps they will be rightly guided. 186
Made lawful for you, on the night of abstention, is intimacy with your women: 187
they are a garment for you, and you are a garment for them. 187
God knew that you were betraying yourselves; He turned toward you with clemency, then, and pardoned you. 187
Unite with them, then, now, 187
and seek what God has prescribed for you. 187
And eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinguishable to you from the black thread of dawn, 187
then complete the abstention fully until night. 187
And do not unite with them, while you are in residence in the places of prostration. 187
Those are the limits of God, 187
so do not approach them. 187
Thus does God make His signs clear for mankind, perhaps they will guard themselves. 187
And do not devour your wealth among yourselves through falsehood, and do not offer it to judges to devour, knowingly and unjustly, a part of the wealth of the people. 188
They ask you about public announcements.i 189
Say: "They are fixed appointments for mankind, and for the Hajj." 189
And righteousness does not consist in entering houses from their backs, 189
but righteousness is [that of] one who guards himself. 189
Enter, then, houses by their doors, 189
and guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed. 189
And fight, in the way of God, those who fight you, but do not transgress: 190
God does not love the transgressors. 190
And kill them wherever you encounter them, and expel them from where they expelled you: 191
the trial is graver than killing. 191
And do not fight them near the inviolable place of prostration, until they fight you there; 191
but if they fight you, kill them then: 191
such is the reward of those who deny-disown. 191
But if they cease, God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 192
And fight them until there is no more trial, and the Law is entirely for God; 193
and if they cease, then no hostility, except toward the unjust. 193
The inviolable month for the inviolable month: inviolable things call for a just reciprocity.i 194
Whoever has transgressed against you, transgress against him to the extent of his transgression against you, 194
and guard yourselves toward God, and know that God is with those who guard themselves. 194
And spend in the way of God, but do not cast your means of livelihood into ruin; and do good:i 195
God loves those who do good. 195
And complete fully the Hajj and the Umra for God. 196
And if you are prevented, then whatever offering is easily available.i 196
And do not shave your heads until the offering has reached its place of delivery;i 196
And whoever among you is sick, or suffers an ailment of the head, then a compensation by fasting, alms, or any other good deed. 196
And once secure, whoever enjoys the Umra until the Hajj, then whatever offering is easily available.i 196
And whoever does not find the means, then an abstention of three days during the Hajj, and seven once you have returned: that is ten complete days. 196
That, for one whose family is not present near the inviolable place of prostration. 196
And guard yourselves toward God, and know that God is severe in punishment. 196
The Hajj takes place in known months.i 197
Whoever commits himself thereby to the Hajj, then no obscenity, no transgression, and no dispute during the Hajj. 197
And whatever good you do, God knows it. 197
And take your provisions; 197
but the best of provisions is guardedness. 197
And guard yourselves toward Me, O possessors of intelligence. 197
No blame upon you for seeking a favor from your Guardian. 198
And when you surge forth from Arafat, remember God near the Inviolable Place of remembrance, 198
and remember Him, as He has guided you, though you were before among the astray. 198
Then surge forth from where the people surge forth, 199
and ask God's forgiveness. 199
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 199
And when you have completed your beneficent practices, remember God as you remember your ancestors, or with an even more intense remembrance. 200
And among the people, there is one who says: "Our Guardian, give us in the present life" — and he will have, in the last life, no share. 200
And among them, there is one who says: "Our Guardian, give us a good share in the present life, and a good share in the last life, and preserve us from the punishment of the Fire." 201
Those are the ones who have a share of what they have earned. 202
God is swift in reckoning. 202
And remember God during counted days. 203
And whoever hastens in two days, no transgression upon him; 203
and whoever delays, no transgression upon him, for one who guards himself. 203
And guard yourselves toward God, and know that it is to Him that you will be gathered. 203
And among the people, there is one whose discourse, on the present life, amazes you, and who calls God to witness what is in his core, while he is the fiercest of contenders. 204
And when he turns away, he strives on the earth to sow corruption in it, and to destroy crops and offspring. 205
God does not love corruption. 205
And when it is said to him: "Guard yourself toward God", pride seizes him in transgression; Jahannam suffices him, then. 206
And what an evil bed! 206
And among the people, there is one who sells his own Self, seeking the good pleasure of God. 207
God is full of bonté toward His obedient ones. 207
O you who have believed! enter into peace, wholly, 208
and do not follow the footsteps of the Diverter:i 208
he is for you a manifest enemy. 208
And if you falter after the clear proofs have come to you, know then that God is All-Powerful, Wise. 209
Do they await only that God come to them in shadows of clouds, 210
with the Agents, and that the matter be settled?i 210
And it is to God that all matters return. 210
Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. 211
And whoever changes the blessing of God after it has come to him — God is indeed severe in punishment. 211
The present life has been embellished for those who deny-disown, and they mock those who have believed; 212
but those who guard themselves will be above them, on the Day of Appearance. 212
And God provides sustenance to whom He wills, without measure. 212
Mankind formed a single community; God then raised up the prophets, bearers of good tidings and warners, and sent down with them the Scripture, in truth, so that it might settle between people what they differed over.i 213
And only those to whom it was given diverged over it, 213
after the clear proofs had come to them, out of transgression among themselves. 213
God then guided those who believed to the truth over which they diverged, with His permission. 213
And God guides whom He wills to a straight path. 213
Or did you think you would enter the Garden, when there has not yet come to you the equivalent of what those before you experienced? Hardship and misfortune touched them, and they were shaken to the point that the messenger and those who had believed with him said: "When, then, is the help of God?" 214
Is it not so: the help of God is near! 214
They ask you: what should they spend? 215
Say: "Whatever good you spend belongs to the two parents, relatives, orphans, the destitute, and the stranded traveler." 215
And whatever good you do, God knows it perfectly. 215
Combat is prescribed for you, though it is distasteful to you. 216
It may be that you dislike a thing, while it is a good for you; 216
and it may be that you like a thing, while it is an evil for you. 216
God knows, 216
and you do not know. 216
They ask you about the inviolable month, [and] combat taking place in it.i 217
Say: "To fight in it is grave; 217
but to turn away from the path of God, deny-disown it, [turn away] from the inviolable place of prostration, and expel its inhabitants from it, is graver still with God; 217
and the trial is graver than killing." 217
And they will not cease to fight you until they make you renounce your Law, if they can. 217
And whoever among you renounces his Law, and dies while denying-disowning — those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life,i 217
and those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally. 217
Those who have believed, those who have emigrated and have striven in the way of God — those are the ones who hope for the benevolence of God. 218
God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 218
They ask you about wine and games of chance. 219
Say: "There is, in both, a great harm, and profits for people; 219
but their harm is greater than their profit." 219
And they ask you: what should they spend? Say: "The surplus." 219
Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reflect on the present life and on the last life. 220
And they ask you about orphans. Say: "Setting their situation right is a good; 220
and if you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers." 220
God distinguishes the sower of corruption from him who sets things right. 220
And had God willed, He would have overwhelmed you. 220
God is All-Powerful, Wise. 220
And do not marry women who associate, until they believe; 221
and a believing obedient woman is indeed better than a woman who associates, even if she pleases you.i 221
And do not give yourselves in marriage to those who associate, until they believe; 221
and a believing obedient man is indeed better than a man who associates, even if he pleases you. 221
Those are the ones who call toward the Fire, 221
while God calls toward the Garden and forgiveness, with His permission, 221
and He makes His signs clear for mankind, perhaps they will take heed. 221
And they ask you about menstruation. Say: "It is an inconvenience;i 222
so keep away from women during menstruation, 222
and do not approach them until they are no longer inconvenienced. 222
And once they are no longer so, unite with them from where God has ordered you." 222
God loves those who turn back [to Him], and He loves those who keep themselves clean. 222
Your women are a field for you; unite, then, with your field as you wish, 223
and prepare a good for yourselves; 223
and guard yourselves toward God, 223
and know that you will meet Him. 223
And give good news to the believers. 223
And do not make God, in your oaths, a pretext you use at will,i 224
to being righteous, guarding yourselves, and reconciling people. 224
God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 224
God will not hold you to account for words uttered without real commitment in your oaths,i 225
but He will hold you to account for what your cores have earned. 225
God is Most-Forgiving, full of patience. 225
For those who swear to abstain from their wives, a waiting period of four months; 226
and if they return, God is indeed Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 226
And if they are resolved on repudiation, God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 227
And repudiated women observe a waiting period of three cycles; 228
and it is not lawful for them to hide what God has created in their wombs, if they believe in God and the Last Day. 228
And their husbands have greater right to take them back during this period, if they want a reconciliation. 228
And they have rights equivalent to their obligations, according to what is recognized; 228
and men have, over them, a degree [of responsibility]. 228
God is All-Powerful, Wise. 228
Repudiation is [revocable] twice. 229
Then, either a resumption according to what is recognized, or a release in good grace. 229
And it is not lawful for you to take back anything of what you gave them, unless both fear that they will not maintain the limits of God. 229
And if you fear that they will not maintain the limits of God, no blame upon them both for what she ransoms herself with. 229
Those are the limits of God, 229
so do not transgress them. 229
And whoever transgresses the limits of God — those are the unjust. 229
If he repudiates her [a third time], she is no longer lawful for him thereafter, until she marries a husband other than him. 230
And if this one repudiates her, no blame upon them both for reuniting, if they think they will maintain the limits of God. 230
Those are the limits of God, which He makes clear for a people who know. 230
And when you repudiate women, and they reach their term, keep them according to what is recognized, or release them according to what is recognized; 231
and do not keep them out of harm, to transgress. 231
And whoever does that has wronged himself. 231
And do not take the signs of God in mockery. 231
And remember God's blessing upon you, and what He has sent down upon you of the Scripture and the wisdom, by which He exhorts you.i 231
And guard yourselves toward God, 231
and know that God is, of all things, All-Knowing. 231
And when you repudiate women, and they reach their term, do not prevent them from marrying their [new] spouses, once they mutually consent according to what is recognized. 232
That is what whoever among you believes in God and the Last Day is exhorted to. 232
That is more pure for you, and cleaner. 232
God knows, and you do not know. 232
And mothers take their children into care for two complete years,i 233
for whoever wants to bring this care to completion.i 233
And it is incumbent upon the father to provide for their food and their clothing, according to what is recognized. 233
No Self is burdened beyond its capacity. 233
Let no mother be wronged because of her child, nor any father because of his child. 233
And upon the heir falls the same thing. 233
And if they want a weaning, by their mutual consent and after consultation, no blame upon them both. 233
And if you want to have your children taken into care [by another woman], no blame upon you, once you settle what you owe according to what is recognized.i 233
And guard yourselves toward God, 233
and know that God sees perfectly what you do. 233
And those among you who die leaving wives, they observe a waiting period of four months and ten;i 234
and once they reach their term, no blame upon you for what they do with themselves according to what is recognized. 234
God is well informed of what you do. 234
And no blame upon you, in what you hint at as a proposal of marriage to women, or what you keep within yourselves. 235
God knows that you will think of them; but do not promise them anything in secret, 235
except to say a recognized word. 235
And do not conclude the marriage contract before the document [of the waiting period] reaches its term.i 235
And know that God knows what is in your Selves; beware of Him, then. 235
And know that God is Most-Forgiving, full of patience. 235
No blame upon you, if you repudiate women while you have not touched them, or have not fixed an obligation for them. 236
And grant them an enjoyment — the affluent according to his means, and the modest according to his means — an enjoyment according to what is recognized: 236
a duty upon those who do good. 236
And if you repudiate them before having touched them, while you have fixed an obligation for them, half of what you fixed [belongs to them], unless they forgo it, or unless he in whose hands is the marriage contract forgoes it. 237
And that you forgo is closer to guardedness. 237
And do not forget the favor between you. 237
God sees perfectly what you do. 237
Keep the Contacts, and the most perfect [possible] Contact, and stand before God, devoted.i 238
And if you fear [danger], then on foot or mounted [by any means of transport]; 239
and once secure, remember God as He has taught you what you did not know. 239
And those among you who die leaving wives — a prescription [from God] in favor of their wives: an enjoyment until the anniversary [of death], without expulsion;i 240
but if they leave, no blame upon you for what they do with themselves that is recognized. 240
God is All-Powerful, Wise. 240
And for repudiated women, an enjoyment according to what is recognized: 241
a duty upon those who guard themselves. 241
Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will reason. 242
Have you not seen those who went out of their dwellings, by thousands, out of fear of death? God then said to them: "Die"; then He brought them back to life. 243
God indeed holds a favor toward mankind, 243
but most people are not grateful. 243
And fight in the way of God, and know that God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 244
Who, then, will make God a beautiful loan, which He will multiply for him many times over? 245
God tightens and extends [sustenance], 245
and it is to Him that you will be returned. 245
Have you not seen the court, among the Children of Israel, after Moussa, when they said to a prophet of theirs: "Raise up for us a king, that we may fight in the way of God"?i 246
He said: "Might it be that, if combat were prescribed for you, you would not fight?" 246
They said: "And what reason would we have not to fight in the way of God, when we have been expelled from our dwellings and [separated] from our children?" 246
But when combat was prescribed for them, they turned away, except a small number of them. 246
God knows perfectly the unjust. 246
And their prophet said to them: "God has indeed raised up for you Talut as king."i 247
They said: "How would he have the kingship over us, when we have more right to it than he, and he has not been given abundance of wealth?" 247
He said: "God has chosen him over you, and increased him in breadth of knowledge and constitution." 247
God gives His kingship to whom He wills. 247
God is Vast, All-Knowing. 247
And their prophet said to them: "The sign of his kingship will be that the ark comes to you, wherein is a tranquility from your Guardian, and a remnant of what the family of Moussa and the family of Harun left, carried by the Agents."i 248
There is indeed a sign in that for you, if you are believers. 248
When Talut set out with the troops, he said: "God is going to try you with a river: whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is of me — except one who draws a scoop with his hand."i 249
They drank from it, except a small number of them. 249
Then, when they had crossed it, he and those who had believed with him, they said: "We have no strength today against Jalut and his troops."i 249
Those who thought that they would meet God said: "How many a small group has overcome a large group, with God's permission!" 249
God is with the patient. 249
And when they came out to face Jalut and his troops, they said: "Our Guardian, pour patience upon us, make firm our steps, and help us against the people who deny-disown"; they routed them then, with God's permission, 251
and Dawud killed Jalut; God gave him kingship and wisdom, and taught him what He willed.i 251
And without God repelling people, some by others, the earth would indeed have been given over to corruption; 251
but God holds a favor toward all beings. 251
Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth, 252
and you are indeed among the envoys. 252
Those are the messengers: 253
We favored some of them above others. 253
Among them, there is one to whom God spoke, 253
and He raised others in degrees. 253
And We gave Issa, son of Maryam, the clear proofs, and We reinforced him with the sacred Influx.i 253
And had God willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another, after the clear proofs had come to them; 253
but they diverged: 253
among them, there are some who believed, and some who denied-disowned. 253
And had God willed, they would not have fought one another; 253
but God does what He wills. 253
O you who have believed! spend from what We have provided you as sustenance, before a day comes wherein there will be neither trade, nor friendship, nor intercession. 254
And those who deny-disown — those are the unjust. 254
God, there is no deity but Him, 255
the Living, the Self-Subsisting. 255
Neither drowsiness nor sleep seizes Him. 255
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. 255
Who, then, intercedes with Him, except with His permission? 255
He knows what is before them and what is behind them, 255
and they encompass nothing of His knowledge, except what He wills. 255
His Seat extends over the heavens and the earth, 255
and their guarding costs Him no effort. 255
He is the Exalted, the Immense. 255
No compulsion in the Law: 256
soundness of judgment has become distinct from error. 256
Whoever denies-disowns the Tyrant and believes in God has held firmly to the surest handhold, which never breaks. 256
God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 256
God is the protector of those who have believed, He brings them out of the darknesses toward the light. 257
And those who deny-disown, their protectors are the Tyrant, who brings them out of the light toward the darknesses. 257
Those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally. 257
Have you not seen him who disputed with Ibrahim about his Guardian, because God had given him kingship? When Ibrahim said: "My Guardian is He who gives life and causes death",i 258
he said: "I too give life and cause death." 258
Ibrahim said: "God brings the sun from the east; bring it, then, from the west"; the one who denied-disowned was left with his words unraveled, then.i 258
And God does not guide the unjust people. 258
Or like him who passed by a city, empty despite its edifices.i 259
He said: "How will God bring this back to life, after its death?" God then caused him to die a hundred years, then He resurrected him. 259
He said: "How long have you remained?" 259
He said: "I have remained a day, or part of a day." 259
He said: "No, you have remained a hundred years. 259
Look, then, at your food and your drink: they have not waited [to spoil];i 259
and look at your donkey — 259
and so that We may make of you a sign for mankind. 259
And look at the bones, how We raise them up, then clothe them with flesh. 259
When this had become clear to him, he said: "I know that God has power over all things." 259
And remember when Ibrahim said: "My Guardian, show me how You give life to the dead."i 260
He said: "Do you not believe, then?" 260
He said: "Yes, indeed; it is only so that my core may find ease." 260
He said: "Take, then, four birds, tame them to yourself, then place, on each hill, a part of them, then call them: they will come to you swiftly. 260
And know that God is All-Powerful, Wise." 260
The likeness of those who spend their wealth in the way of God is that of a grain which grows seven ears, 261
each ear bearing a hundred grains. 261
God multiplies for whom He wills. 261
God is Vast, All-Knowing. 261
Those who spend their wealth in the way of God, then do not follow what they spent with either reminder or harm, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve. 262
A recognized word and forgiveness are better than alms followed by harm. 263
God is self-sufficient, full of patience. 263
O you who have believed! do not annul your alms by reminder [of your benefactions] and harm, like one who spends his wealth for show before people, and believes neither in God nor in the Last Day. 264
His likeness is that of a smooth rock covered with soil: a torrential rain strikes it, and leaves it bare. 264
They hold nothing of what they have earned. 264
And God does not guide the people who deny-disown. 264
And the likeness of those who spend their wealth, seeking the good pleasure of God and the strengthening of their own Selves, is that of a garden on a height: a torrential rain strikes it, and it gives its yield twofold; and if no torrential rain strikes it, a drizzle [suffices]. 265
God sees perfectly what you do. 265
Would one of you like to have a garden of palm trees and vines, beneath which rivers flow, wherein he would have all kinds of fruits, then old age strikes him, while he has a weak offspring, and a whirlwind of fire strikes it, and it burns? 266
Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reflect. 266
O you who have believed! spend of the good things you have earned, and of what We have brought forth for you from the earth, 267
and do not aim at what is vile of it to spend, when you would not accept it yourselves except by closing your eyes to it. 267
And know that God is self-sufficient, worthy of praise. 267
The Diverter promises you poverty, and orders you to indecency,i 268
while God promises you, from Himself, a forgiveness and a favor. 268
God is Vast, All-Knowing. 268
He gives wisdom to whom He wills, 269
and whoever receives wisdom has received an abundant good. 269
And only the possessors of intelligence take heed. 269
And whatever expenditure you spend, or vow you make, God knows it. 270
And the unjust have no helpers. 270
If you disclose your alms, that is excellent; 271
and if you hide them and give them to the poor, that is better for you, and it erases a part of your evil deeds. 271
God is well informed of what you do. 271
It is not incumbent upon you to guide them, 272
but God guides whom He wills. 272
And whatever good you spend, it is for yourselves. 272
And you spend only seeking the direction of God. 272
And whatever good you spend, it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged. 272
This belongs to the poor who are held back in the way of God, unable to travel through the land: the ignorant thinks them rich, because of their restraint; 273
you recognize them by their marks: they do not ask people insistently. 273
And whatever good you spend, God knows it perfectly. 273
Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, in secret and openly, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve. 274
Those who devour usury rise only as one rises whom the Diverter has overturned by his touch.i 275
That is because they said: "Trade is only ever like usury"; 275
but God has made trade lawful, and forbidden usury. 275
Whoever, an admonition from his Guardian having reached him, ceases, will keep what is past, 275
and his matter rests with God; 275
but whoever relapses — those are the companions of the Fire, they abide therein eternally. 275
God destroys usury, and makes alms grow. 276
God does not love any great denier, transgressor. 276
Those who have believed, done righteous deeds, maintained the Contact, and given the purifying alms, have their reward with their Guardian; no fear upon them, and they will not grieve. 277
O you who have believed! guard yourselves toward God, and forsake what remains of usury, if you are believers. 278
If you do not do it, know then that it is a war from God and His Messenger; 279
and if you turn back [to God], the principal of your wealth belongs to you, without your doing wrong or being wronged. 279
And if [the debtor] is in hardship, then a respite until ease; 280
and that you remit it as charity is better for you, if you knew. 280
And guard yourselves against a day when you will be brought back to God, 281
when every Self will be fully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged. 281
O you who have believed! when you contract a debt between yourselves for a fixed term, put it in writing.i 282
And let a scribe write it between you with equity, 282
and let no scribe refuse to write, 282
according to what God has taught him; let him write, then, 282
and let him dictate who owes the debt, and let him guard himself toward God, his Guardian, and not diminish anything of it. 282
And if he who owes the debt is foolish, or weak, or unable to dictate himself, let his guardian dictate, then, with equity. 282
And call two witnesses from among your men to witness it; 282
and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, from among those whose testimony you approve, so that if one of the two errs, the other may remind her. 282
And let not the witnesses refuse, when they are called. 282
And do not be weary of writing it down, small or large, until its term. 282
That is more equitable with God, more upright for testimony, and closer to not doubting — except if it is an immediate trade that you conduct among yourselves: no blame then upon you for not writing it down. 282
And take witnesses when you conduct a transaction among yourselves. 282
And let no harm be done to either the scribe or the witness. 282
And if you do, it is a transgression on your part. 282

and God teaches you. 282

God is, of all things, All-Knowing. 282

And if one of you trusts another, let him to whom the trust was given discharge his trust, 283
and let him guard himself toward God, his Guardian. 283
And do not hide testimony. 283
And whoever hides it has indeed a transgressive core. 283

God is, of what you do, All-Knowing. 283

Whether you disclose what is within you, or hide it, God will call you to account for it; He forgives, then, whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills. 284
God has power over all things. 284

"We make no distinction between any of His messengers"; 285
and they said: "We have heard and we have obeyed. 285

"Our Guardian, do not hold us to account if we forget or if we err. 286
Our Guardian, and do not lay upon us a burden as You laid it upon those before us. 286
Our Guardian, and do not make us bear what we do not have the strength to bear. 286
