Sourate An-Nur (24) vowelled

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. This is a sourate which We have sent down and which We have made obligatory, and in which We have sent down clear signs, that you may remember.i 1

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ سُورَةٌ أَنزَلْنَٰهَا وَفَرَضْنَٰهَا وَأَنزَلْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَٰتٍۭ بَيِّنَٰتٍۢ لَّعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

The fornicatress and the fornicator, inflict on each of them a hundred lashes, 2

ٱلزَّانِيَةُ وَٱلزَّانِى فَٱجْلِدُوا۟ كُلَّ وَٰحِدٍۢ مِّنْهُمَا مِا۟ئَةَ جَلْدَةٍۢ

and let no compassion for them seize you in the Law of God, if you believe in God and the Last Day; 2

وَلَا تَأْخُذْكُم بِهِمَا رَأْفَةٌۭ فِى دِينِ ٱللَّهِ إِن كُنتُمْ تُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلْيَوْمِ ٱلْءَاخِرِ

and let a group of believers witness their punishment. 2

وَلْيَشْهَدْ عَذَابَهُمَا طَآئِفَةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

The fornicator takes as wife only a fornicatress or an associator, 3

ٱلزَّانِى لَا يَنكِحُ إِلَّا زَانِيَةً أَوْ مُشْرِكَةًۭ

and the fornicatress, only a fornicator or an associator takes her as wife; 3

وَٱلزَّانِيَةُ لَا يَنكِحُهَآ إِلَّا زَانٍ أَوْ مُشْرِكٌۭ

and that is forbidden to the believers. 3

وَحُرِّمَ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

And those who accuse women protected by contract, then do not bring four witnesses, inflict on them eighty lashes,i 4

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَأْتُوا۟ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَ فَٱجْلِدُوهُمْ ثَمَٰنِينَ جَلْدَةًۭ

and never accept their testimony again — those are the oversteppers, except those who repented after that and reformed, for God is ever Forgiving, benevolent. 5

وَلَا تَقْبَلُوا۟ لَهُمْ شَهَٰدَةً أَبَدًۭا وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ تَابُوا۟ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ وَأَصْلَحُوا۟ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ

And those who accuse their spouses, having no witnesses except themselves, the testimony of one of them shall be four oaths by God that he is indeed among the truthful, and the fifth, that the curse of God be upon him if he is among the liars. 7

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ أَزْوَٰجَهُمْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُمْ شُهَدَآءُ إِلَّآ أَنفُسُهُمْ فَشَهَٰدَةُ أَحَدِهِمْ أَرْبَعُ شَهَٰدَٰتٍۭ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ وَٱلْخَٰمِسَةُ أَنَّ لَعْنَتَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ

And the punishment will be averted from her if she testifies four times by God that he is among the liars, and a fifth time, that the wrath of God be upon her if he is among the truthful. 9

وَيَدْرَؤُا۟ عَنْهَا ٱلْعَذَابَ أَن تَشْهَدَ أَرْبَعَ شَهَٰدَٰتٍۭ بِٱللَّهِ إِنَّهُۥ لَمِنَ ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ وَٱلْخَٰمِسَةَ أَنَّ غَضَبَ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهَآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ

And were it not for the favor of God upon you, His benevolence, and that God is ever Returning, Wise, [you would have been ruined]. 10

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابٌ حَكِيمٌ

Those who came with the calumny are a group from among you; do not think it is an evil for you, 11

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ جَآءُو بِٱلْإِفْكِ عُصْبَةٌۭ مِّنكُمْ لَا تَحْسَبُوهُ شَرًّۭا لَّكُم

no, it is a good for you. 11

بَلْ هُوَ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ

To each man among them [will come] what he has earned of transgression, 11

لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍۢ مِّنْهُم مَّا ٱكْتَسَبَ مِنَ ٱلْإِثْمِ

and he among them who took the greatest part of it will have an immense punishment. 11

وَٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰ كِبْرَهُۥ مِنْهُمْ لَهُۥ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌۭ

If only, upon hearing it, the believing men and women had thought well of themselves, and had said: This is a manifest calumny! 12

لَّوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ ظَنَّ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتُ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ خَيْرًۭا وَقَالُوا۟ هَٰذَآ إِفْكٌۭ مُّبِينٌۭ

If only they had brought four witnesses concerning it! 13

لَّوْلَا جَآءُو عَلَيْهِ بِأَرْبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَ

Since they did not bring the witnesses, those are, in the sight of God, the liars. 13

فَإِذْ لَمْ يَأْتُوا۟ بِٱلشُّهَدَآءِ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلْكَٰذِبُونَ

And were it not for the favor of God upon you and His benevolence, in the present life and the hereafter, an immense punishment would have touched you for what you engaged in, when you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge, deeming it trivial while it is, in the sight of God, immense. 15

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِى مَآ أَفَضْتُمْ فِيهِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ إِذْ تَلَقَّوْنَهُۥ بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَتَقُولُونَ بِأَفْوَاهِكُم مَّا لَيْسَ لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلْمٌۭ وَتَحْسَبُونَهُۥ هَيِّنًۭا وَهُوَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَظِيمٌۭ

And if only, upon hearing it, you had said: It is not for us to speak of this — glory be to You, this is an immense calumny! 16

وَلَوْلَآ إِذْ سَمِعْتُمُوهُ قُلْتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَٰذَا سُبْحَٰنَكَ هَٰذَا بُهْتَٰنٌ عَظِيمٌۭ

God exhorts you never to return to the like of it, if you are believers. 17

يَعِظُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَن تَعُودُوا۟ لِمِثْلِهِۦٓ أَبَدًا إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ

And God explicates the signs for you, 18

وَيُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ

and God is knowing, wise. 18

وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

Those who love that indecency should spread among those who believe will have a painful punishment, in the present life and the hereafter, 19

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ ٱلْفَٰحِشَةُ فِى ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌۭ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ

and God knows, 19

وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ

and you, you do not know. 19

وَأَنتُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

And were it not for the favor of God upon you, His benevolence, and that God is Compassionate, benevolent, [you would have been ruined]. 20

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَءُوفٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ

O you who believe, do not follow the steps of the Diverter;i 21

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّبِعُوا۟ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ

and whoever follows the steps of the Diverter — he indeed commands indecency and what is disavowed.i 21

وَمَن يَتَّبِعْ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنِ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْفَحْشَآءِ وَٱلْمُنكَرِ

And were it not for the favor of God upon you, His benevolence, not one of you would ever have been purified, 21

وَلَوْلَا فَضْلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَتُهُۥ مَا زَكَىٰ مِنكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ أَبَدًۭا

but God purifies whom He wills, 21

وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُزَكِّى مَن يَشَآءُ

and God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 21

وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌۭ

And let not those among you who have favor and ease swear not to give to their relatives, the destitute, and those who emigrated in the way of God, 22

وَلَا يَأْتَلِ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْفَضْلِ مِنكُمْ وَٱلسَّعَةِ أَن يُؤْتُوٓا۟ أُو۟لِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينَ وَٱلْمُهَٰجِرِينَ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ

let them rather pardon and overlook. 22

وَلْيَعْفُوا۟ وَلْيَصْفَحُوٓا۟

Would you not love for God to forgive you? 22

أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَن يَغْفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ

And God is ever Forgiving, benevolent. 22

وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌ

Those who accuse women protected by contract, unwitting, believing, are cursed in the present life and the hereafter, and they will have an immense punishment, on the day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will testify against them for what they used to do. 24

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَرْمُونَ ٱلْمُحْصَنَٰتِ ٱلْغَٰفِلَٰتِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ لُعِنُوا۟ فِى ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلْءَاخِرَةِ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌۭ يَوْمَ تَشْهَدُ عَلَيْهِمْ أَلْسِنَتُهُمْ وَأَيْدِيهِمْ وَأَرْجُلُهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

That day, God will pay them in full their just due, 25

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ يُوَفِّيهِمُ ٱللَّهُ دِينَهُمُ ٱلْحَقَّ

and they will know that God is the manifest Truth. 25

وَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلْحَقُّ ٱلْمُبِينُ

The bad for the bad, and the bad for the bad; 26

ٱلْخَبِيثَٰتُ لِلْخَبِيثِينَ وَٱلْخَبِيثُونَ لِلْخَبِيثَٰتِ

the good for the good, and the good for the good. 26

وَٱلطَّيِّبَٰتُ لِلطَّيِّبِينَ وَٱلطَّيِّبُونَ لِلطَّيِّبَٰتِ

Those are absolved of what is said [against them]; 26

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ مُبَرَّءُونَ مِمَّا يَقُولُونَ

they have forgiveness and a generous provision. 26

لَهُم مَّغْفِرَةٌۭ وَرِزْقٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ

O you who believe, do not enter houses other than your own until you have made yourselves known and greeted their occupants — 27

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَدْخُلُوا۟ بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ بُيُوتِكُمْ حَتَّىٰ تَسْتَأْنِسُوا۟ وَتُسَلِّمُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهَا

that is better for you, that you may remember. 27

ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٌۭ لَّكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ

If you find no one therein, do not enter until you are given permission; 28

فَإِن لَّمْ تَجِدُوا۟ فِيهَآ أَحَدًۭا فَلَا تَدْخُلُوهَا حَتَّىٰ يُؤْذَنَ لَكُمْ

and if you are told: Go back, then go back — it is purer for you. 28

وَإِن قِيلَ لَكُمُ ٱرْجِعُوا۟ فَٱرْجِعُوا۟ هُوَ أَزْكَىٰ لَكُمْ

And God, of what you do, is knowing. 28

وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌۭ

There is no fault in your entering uninhabited houses in which there is a use for you. 29

لَّيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَدْخُلُوا۟ بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ مَسْكُونَةٍۢ فِيهَا مَتَٰعٌۭ لَّكُمْ

And God knows what you disclose and what you conceal. 29

وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تُبْدُونَ وَمَا تَكْتُمُونَ

Say to the believing men to lower their gazes and guard their private parts — that is purer for them. 30

قُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَٰرِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا۟ فُرُوجَهُمْ ذَٰلِكَ أَزْكَىٰ لَهُمْ

God is informed of what they do. 30

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ

And say to the believing women to lower their gazes and guard their private parts, 31

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ

and not to display that which, in them, arouses desire, except what the silhouette lets show,i 31

وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا

and let them multiply their covering cloth over the opening of their chest,i 31

وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَىٰ جُيُوبِهِنَّ

and let them not display what, in them, arouses desire, except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husbands' fathers, or their sons, or their husbands' sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women [of their circle], or those bound by pledge, or male attendants devoid of desire, or children who have no awareness yet of women's private matters. 31

وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِىٓ إِخْوَٰنِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِىٓ أَخَوَٰتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُهُنَّ أَوِ ٱلتَّٰبِعِينَ غَيْرِ أُو۟لِى ٱلْإِرْبَةِ مِنَ ٱلرِّجَالِ أَوِ ٱلطِّفْلِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰ عَوْرَٰتِ ٱلنِّسَآءِ

And let them not multiply their steps [about the city] so as to make known what they conceal of what arouses desire in them.i 31

وَلَا يَضْرِبْنَ بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِينَ مِن زِينَتِهِنَّ

And turn all together to God, O believers, that you may succeed. 31

وَتُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ

Marry the unmarried among you, as well as the righteous among your male and female obedient ones. 32

وَأَنكِحُوا۟ ٱلْأَيَٰمَىٰ مِنكُمْ وَٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ مِنْ عِبَادِكُمْ وَإِمَآئِكُمْ

If they are poor, God will enrich them from His favor. 32

إِن يَكُونُوا۟ فُقَرَآءَ يُغْنِهِمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ

And God is vast [in generosity], knowing. 32

وَٱللَّهُ وَٰسِعٌ عَلِيمٌۭ

And let those who do not find [the means for] marriage restrain themselves, until God enriches them from His favor. 33

وَلْيَسْتَعْفِفِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ نِكَاحًا حَتَّىٰ يُغْنِيَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ

And those, among those bound by pledge, who seek [with you] a written contract [of marriage, to become protected], draw up that contract with them if you know good in them,i 33

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَبْتَغُونَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ مِمَّا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ فَكَاتِبُوهُمْ إِنْ عَلِمْتُمْ فِيهِمْ خَيْرًۭا

and give them from the wealth of God which He has given you. 33

وَءَاتُوهُم مِّن مَّالِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَاتَىٰكُمْ

And do not compel your young women to prostitution, if they wish to remain chaste, seeking merely the goods of the present life.i 33

وَلَا تُكْرِهُوا۟ فَتَيَٰتِكُمْ عَلَى ٱلْبِغَآءِ إِنْ أَرَدْنَ تَحَصُّنًۭا لِّتَبْتَغُوا۟ عَرَضَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا

And whoever compels them — after their compulsion, God is ever Forgiving, benevolent [toward them]. 33

وَمَن يُكْرِههُّنَّ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ إِكْرَٰهِهِنَّ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ

We have sent down to you clear signs, an example from those who passed away before you, and an admonition for those who guard themselves. 34

وَلَقَدْ أَنزَلْنَآ إِلَيْكُمْ ءَايَٰتٍۢ مُّبَيِّنَٰتٍۢ وَمَثَلًۭا مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَلَوْا۟ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَمَوْعِظَةًۭ لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. 35

ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ

The example of His Light is like a niche wherein is a lamp. 35

مَثَلُ نُورِهِۦ كَمِشْكَوٰةٍۢ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ

The lamp is in a glass. 35

ٱلْمِصْبَاحُ فِى زُجَاجَةٍ

The glass is like a brilliant star, kindled from a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow forth even without fire touching it.i 35

ٱلزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌۭ دُرِّىٌّۭ يُوقَدُ مِن شَجَرَةٍۢ مُّبَٰرَكَةٍۢ زَيْتُونَةٍۢ لَّا شَرْقِيَّةٍۢ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍۢ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِىٓءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌۭ

Light upon light. 35

نُّورٌ عَلَىٰ نُورٍۢ

God guides to His Light whom He wills, 35

يَهْدِى ٱللَّهُ لِنُورِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ

and God multiplies examples for the people, 35

وَيَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْأَمْثَٰلَ لِلنَّاسِ

and God, of everything, is knowing. 35

وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌۭ

In houses which God has permitted to be raised, and in which His name is remembered — He is glorified therein, morning and evening, by men whom neither trade nor commerce diverts from the remembrance of God, the maintaining of the Contact, and the giving of the purifying alms, 37

فِى بُيُوتٍ أَذِنَ ٱللَّهُ أَن تُرْفَعَ وَيُذْكَرَ فِيهَا ٱسْمُهُۥ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ فِيهَا بِٱلْغُدُوِّ وَٱلْءَاصَالِ رِجَالٌۭ لَّا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَٰرَةٌۭ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَن ذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَإِيتَآءِ ٱلزَّكَوٰةِ

fearing a day when the cores and the gazes will be overturned, [acting] so that God may reward them according to the best of what they have done, and grant them increase from His favor. 38

يَخَافُونَ يَوْمًۭا تَتَقَلَّبُ فِيهِ ٱلْقُلُوبُ وَٱلْأَبْصَٰرُ لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَزِيدَهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ

And God provides for whom He wills, without measure. 38

وَٱللَّهُ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍۢ

And those who deny, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert plain, which the thirsty one takes for water, until, when he reaches it, he finds nothing, but he finds God there, who settles his account in full. 39

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَعْمَٰلُهُمْ كَسَرَابٍۭ بِقِيعَةٍۢ يَحْسَبُهُ ٱلظَّمْـَٔانُ مَآءً حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَهُۥ لَمْ يَجِدْهُ شَيْـًۭٔا وَوَجَدَ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ فَوَفَّىٰهُ حِسَابَهُۥ

And God is swift in settling accounts. 39

وَٱللَّهُ سَرِيعُ ٱلْحِسَابِ

Or like darkness on a deep, surging sea: a wave covers it, above which is another wave, above which is a cloud — 40

أَوْ كَظُلُمَٰتٍۢ فِى بَحْرٍۢ لُّجِّىٍّۢ يَغْشَىٰهُ مَوْجٌۭ مِّن فَوْقِهِۦ مَوْجٌۭ مِّن فَوْقِهِۦ سَحَابٌۭ

darknesses, one above another: 40

ظُلُمَٰتٌۢ بَعْضُهَا فَوْقَ بَعْضٍ

When he puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. 40

إِذَآ أَخْرَجَ يَدَهُۥ لَمْ يَكَدْ يَرَىٰهَا

And he to whom God grants no light has no light. 40

وَمَن لَّمْ يَجْعَلِ ٱللَّهُ لَهُۥ نُورًۭا فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن نُّورٍ

Have you not seen that God — He is glorified by those in the heavens and on the earth, and the birds with wings outspread? 41

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ مَن فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَٱلطَّيْرُ صَٰٓفَّٰتٍۢ

Each one knows its Contact and its glorification, 41

كُلٌّۭ قَدْ عَلِمَ صَلَاتَهُۥ وَتَسْبِيحَهُۥ

and God is knowing of what they do. 41

وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ

To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, 42

وَلِلَّهِ مُلْكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and to God is the destination. 42

وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

Have you not seen that God drives the clouds, then joins them together, then makes them into a mass, and you see the rain come out from within it? 43

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُزْجِى سَحَابًۭا ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيْنَهُۥ ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُۥ رُكَامًۭا فَتَرَى ٱلْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَٰلِهِۦ

And He sends down from the sky, from mountains [of clouds] therein, hail, which He strikes whom He wills with, and turns away from whom He wills; 43

وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مِن جِبَالٍۢ فِيهَا مِنۢ بَرَدٍۢ فَيُصِيبُ بِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَصْرِفُهُۥ عَن مَّن يَشَآءُ

the flash of its lightning almost takes away the sight. 43

يَكَادُ سَنَا بَرْقِهِۦ يَذْهَبُ بِٱلْأَبْصَٰرِ

God alternates the night and the day. 44

يُقَلِّبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّيْلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ

There is indeed in that a lesson for those who have eyes [to see]. 44

إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةًۭ لِّأُو۟لِى ٱلْأَبْصَٰرِ

And God created every living being from water. 45

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَ كُلَّ دَآبَّةٍۢ مِّن مَّآءٍۢ

Among them is one that walks on its belly, 45

فَمِنْهُم مَّن يَمْشِى عَلَىٰ بَطْنِهِۦ

and among them is one that walks on two feet, 45

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَمْشِى عَلَىٰ رِجْلَيْنِ

and among them is one that walks on four. 45

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَمْشِى عَلَىٰٓ أَرْبَعٍۢ

God creates what He wills, 45

يَخْلُقُ ٱللَّهُ مَا يَشَآءُ

God is capable of all things. 45

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍۢ قَدِيرٌۭ

We have sent down clear signs, 46

لَّقَدْ أَنزَلْنَآ ءَايَٰتٍۢ مُّبَيِّنَٰتٍۢ

and God guides whom He wills to a straight path. 46

وَٱللَّهُ يَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍۢ مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ

And they say: We believe in God and in the messenger, and we obey — then a group among them turns away after that; 47

وَيَقُولُونَ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلرَّسُولِ وَأَطَعْنَا ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنْهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ

and those are not believers. 47

وَمَآ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

And when they are called to God and His messenger so that he may judge between them, there is a group among them that turns away. 48

وَإِذَا دُعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ إِذَا فَرِيقٌۭ مِّنْهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ

But if the right is on their side, they come to him in full submission. 49

وَإِن يَكُن لَّهُمُ ٱلْحَقُّ يَأْتُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ مُذْعِنِينَ

Is there a sickness in their cores, or do they doubt, or do they fear that God and His messenger will deal with them unjustly? 50

أَفِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَمِ ٱرْتَابُوٓا۟ أَمْ يَخَافُونَ أَن يَحِيفَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ

No, it is they who are the unjust. 50

بَلْ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

The only word of the believers, when they are called to God and His messenger so that he may judge between them, is to say: We have heard and we obey. 51

إِنَّمَا كَانَ قَوْلَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذَا دُعُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ لِيَحْكُمَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَن يَقُولُوا۟ سَمِعْنَا وَأَطَعْنَا

And those are the ones who succeed. 51

وَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

And whoever obeys God and His messenger, fears God and guards himself toward Him — those are the triumphant. 52

وَمَن يُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ وَيَخْشَ ٱللَّهَ وَيَتَّقْهِ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَآئِزُونَ

And they swore by God, with their most solemn oaths, that if you ordered them, they would surely go forth. 53

وَأَقْسَمُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ جَهْدَ أَيْمَٰنِهِمْ لَئِنْ أَمَرْتَهُمْ لَيَخْرُجُنَّ

Say: Do not swear; 53

قُل لَّا تُقْسِمُوا۟

a recognized obedience [suffices]. 53

طَاعَةٌۭ مَّعْرُوفَةٌ

God is informed of what you do. 53

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ خَبِيرٌۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

Say: Obey God and obey the messenger; 54

قُلْ أَطِيعُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ

but if you turn away, upon him rests only what he has been charged with, and upon you rests only what you have been charged with. 54

فَإِن تَوَلَّوْا۟ فَإِنَّمَا عَلَيْهِ مَا حُمِّلَ وَعَلَيْكُم مَّا حُمِّلْتُمْ

And if you obey him, you will be guided. 54

وَإِن تُطِيعُوهُ تَهْتَدُوا۟

And upon the messenger rests only the clear transmission. 54

وَمَا عَلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ إِلَّا ٱلْبَلَٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ

God has promised those among you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely establish them as successors on the earth, as He established as successors those before them, that He will surely establish firmly for them their Law which He has approved for them, and that He will surely change their state, after their fear, into security. 55

وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَمَا ٱسْتَخْلَفَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ وَلَيُمَكِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ دِينَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى ٱرْتَضَىٰ لَهُمْ وَلَيُبَدِّلَنَّهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ خَوْفِهِمْ أَمْنًۭا

They obey Me without associating anything with Me. 55

يَعْبُدُونَنِى لَا يُشْرِكُونَ بِى شَيْـًۭٔا

And whoever denies after that — those are the oversteppers. 55

وَمَن كَفَرَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْفَٰسِقُونَ

And maintain the Contact, and fulfill the purifying alms, 56

وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ

and obey the messenger, that benevolence may be shown to you. 56

وَأَطِيعُوا۟ ٱلرَّسُولَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

Do not ever think that those who deny can render [God] powerless on the earth; 57

لَا تَحْسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مُعْجِزِينَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ

their refuge is the fire, 57

وَمَأْوَىٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُ

and what an evil destination! 57

وَلَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ

O you who believe, let those bound by pledge and those among you who have not yet reached the age of reflection ask your permission [to enter], at three times: before the Contact of dawn, when you remove your garments at midday, and after the Contact of evening —i 58

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لِيَسْتَـْٔذِنكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَٰنُكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يَبْلُغُوا۟ ٱلْحُلُمَ مِنكُمْ ثَلَٰثَ مَرَّٰتٍۢ مِّن قَبْلِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلْفَجْرِ وَحِينَ تَضَعُونَ ثِيَابَكُم مِّنَ ٱلظَّهِيرَةِ وَمِنۢ بَعْدِ صَلَوٰةِ ٱلْعِشَآءِ

ورش قالون السوسي

three times of privacy for you. 58

ثَلَٰثُ عَوْرَٰتٍۢ لَّكُمْ

There is no fault, neither for you nor for them, outside these times, 58

لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ وَلَا عَلَيْهِمْ جُنَاحٌۢ بَعْدَهُنَّ

being visitors to one another,i 58

طَوَّٰفُونَ عَلَيْكُم

one with another. 58

بَعْضُكُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍۢ

Thus God explicates the signs for you, 58

كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ

and God is knowing, wise. 58

وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ

And when the children among you reach the age of reflection, let them ask permission as those before them asked permission.i 59

وَإِذَا بَلَغَ ٱلْأَطْفَٰلُ مِنكُمُ ٱلْحُلُمَ فَلْيَسْتَـْٔذِنُوا۟ كَمَا ٱسْتَـْٔذَنَ ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ

ورش قالون السوسي

Thus God explicates His signs for you, 59

كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ

and God is knowing, wise. 59

وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭ

And the elderly women, among women, who no longer hope for marriage, are not at fault in laying aside their [outer] garments, without ostentatiously displaying what, in them, arouses desire;i 60

وَٱلْقَوَٰعِدُ مِنَ ٱلنِّسَآءِ ٱلَّٰتِى لَا يَرْجُونَ نِكَاحًۭا فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْهِنَّ جُنَاحٌ أَن يَضَعْنَ ثِيَابَهُنَّ غَيْرَ مُتَبَرِّجَٰتٍۭ بِزِينَةٍۢ

but that they restrain themselves is better for them. 60

وَأَن يَسْتَعْفِفْنَ خَيْرٌۭ لَّهُنَّ

And God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 60

وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌۭ

There is no fault for the blind, nor fault for the lame, nor fault for the sick, nor for yourselves, in eating in your own houses, or the houses of your fathers, or the houses of your mothers, or the houses of your brothers, or the houses of your sisters, or the houses of your paternal uncles, or the houses of your paternal aunts, or the houses of your maternal uncles, or the houses of your maternal aunts, or [houses] whose keys you hold, or [the house] of your friend. 61

لَّيْسَ عَلَى ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ حَرَجٌۭ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلْأَعْرَجِ حَرَجٌۭ وَلَا عَلَى ٱلْمَرِيضِ حَرَجٌۭ وَلَا عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ أَن تَأْكُلُوا۟ مِنۢ بُيُوتِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ ءَابَآئِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ أُمَّهَٰتِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ إِخْوَٰنِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ أَخَوَٰتِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ أَعْمَٰمِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ عَمَّٰتِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ أَخْوَٰلِكُمْ أَوْ بُيُوتِ خَٰلَٰتِكُمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكْتُم مَّفَاتِحَهُۥٓ أَوْ صَدِيقِكُمْ

There is no fault in your eating together or separately. 61

لَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَأْكُلُوا۟ جَمِيعًا أَوْ أَشْتَاتًۭا

And when you enter houses, greet one another with a greeting from God, blessed and good. 61

فَإِذَا دَخَلْتُم بُيُوتًۭا فَسَلِّمُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ تَحِيَّةًۭ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُبَٰرَكَةًۭ طَيِّبَةًۭ

Thus God explicates the signs for you, that you may reason. 61

كَذَٰلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

The believers are only those who believe in God and His messenger, and who, when they are with him for a common matter, do not leave until they have asked his permission. 62

إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَإِذَا كَانُوا۟ مَعَهُۥ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍۢ جَامِعٍۢ لَّمْ يَذْهَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يَسْتَـْٔذِنُوهُ

Those who ask your permission, those are the ones who believe in God and His messenger. 62

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَـْٔذِنُونَكَ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ

ورش قالون السوسي

And when they ask your permission for some matter concerning them, grant it to whom you will among them, and ask God's forgiveness for them. 62

فَإِذَا ٱسْتَـْٔذَنُوكَ لِبَعْضِ شَأْنِهِمْ فَأْذَن لِّمَن شِئْتَ مِنْهُمْ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمُ ٱللَّهَ

ورش قالون السوسي

God is ever Forgiving, benevolent. 62

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ

Do not consider the call of the messenger among yourselves as the call of one of you to another. 63

لَّا تَجْعَلُوا۟ دُعَآءَ ٱلرَّسُولِ بَيْنَكُمْ كَدُعَآءِ بَعْضِكُم بَعْضًۭا

God well knows those among you who slip away furtively. 63

قَدْ يَعْلَمُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَسَلَّلُونَ مِنكُمْ لِوَاذًۭا

Let those who oppose his order beware lest a trial strike them, or a painful punishment reach them. 63

فَلْيَحْذَرِ ٱلَّذِينَ يُخَالِفُونَ عَنْ أَمْرِهِۦٓ أَن تُصِيبَهُمْ فِتْنَةٌ أَوْ يُصِيبَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

Indeed, to God belongs what is in the heavens and on the earth. 64

أَلَآ إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ

He well knows the state you are in, 64

قَدْ يَعْلَمُ مَآ أَنتُمْ عَلَيْهِ

and the day when they are brought back to Him, He will inform them of what they did. 64

وَيَوْمَ يُرْجَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ فَيُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟

And God, of everything, is knowing. 64

وَٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمٌۢ
