Sourate Al-Qamar (54) vowelled

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Benevolent. The Hour has drawn near, and the moon has split.i 1

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُ

And if they see a sign, they turn away and say: 'A persistent illusion.' 2

وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةًۭ يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌۭ مُّسْتَمِرٌّۭ

They denied, and followed their emotions.i 3

وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ

Yet every matter finds its settled term. 3

وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍۢ مُّسْتَقِرٌّۭ

There had indeed come to them, among the accounts, that which should deter [them], 4

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌ

a consummate wisdom — 5

حِكْمَةٌۢ بَٰلِغَةٌۭ

but of what avail are warnings [to them]? 5

فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُ

So turn away from them. 6

فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ

The Day the Caller calls to something terrible, their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading out, rushing toward the Caller, 8

يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍۢ نُّكُرٍ خُشَّعًا أَبْصَٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌۭ مُّنتَشِرٌۭ مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ

Those who deny will say: 'This is a difficult day.' 8

يَقُولُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌۭ

Before them, the people of Nuh denied: they denied Our obedient one and said, 'He is insane,' and he was violently repelled.i 9

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍۢ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌۭ وَٱزْدُجِرَ

So he called upon his Guardian: 'I am overpowered, so grant [me] victory.' 10

فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌۭ فَٱنتَصِرْ

So We opened the gates of heaven with pouring water, 11

فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍۢ مُّنْهَمِرٍۢ

and caused the earth to burst forth in springs, so the waters met according to a matter already decreed. 12

وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًۭا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍۢ قَدْ قُدِرَ

And We carried him upon a vessel of planks and nails, 13

وَحَمَلْنَٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍۢ وَدُسُرٍۢ

It sailed under Our eyes, a recompense for the one who had been rejected. 14

تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءًۭ لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَ

We have indeed left it as a sign: is there then anyone to take heed? 15

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَٰهَآ ءَايَةًۭ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ

So how were My punishment and My warnings? 16

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

We have indeed made the Recitation easy for remembrance: is there then anyone to take heed? 17

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ

The Recidivists [Aad] denied. So how were My punishment and My warnings? 18

كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌۭ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

We sent upon them a furious wind, on a day of continuous misfortune, tearing people away as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees. 20

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًۭا صَرْصَرًۭا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍۢ مُّسْتَمِرٍّۢ تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍۢ مُّنقَعِرٍۢ

So how were My punishment and My warnings? 21

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

We have indeed made the Recitation easy for remembrance: is there then anyone to take heed? 22

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ

the Depleters [Thamud] denied the warnings. 23

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

They said: 'Shall we follow a single human being from among us? We would then be in error and madness. Has the Reminder been cast upon him alone, among us? Rather, he is a boastful liar.' 25

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًۭا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًۭا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًۭا لَّفِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ وَسُعُرٍ أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌۭ

They will know tomorrow who is the boastful liar. 26

سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًۭا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ

We are sending the she-camel as a trial for them, so watch them and be patient. 27

إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةًۭ لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْ

And inform them that the water is to be shared between them, 28

وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ

each turn of drinking attended in its time. 28

كُلُّ شِرْبٍۢ مُّحْتَضَرٌۭ

So they called their companion, and he seized her and hamstrung her. 29

فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ

So how were My punishment and My warnings? 30

فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

We sent upon them a single cry, and they became like the dry twigs of a pen-builder. 31

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةًۭ وَٰحِدَةًۭ فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِ

We have indeed made the Recitation easy for remembrance: is there then anyone to take heed? 32

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ

The people of Lut denied the warnings.i 33

كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lut, whom We saved before dawn,i 34

إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍۢ نَّجَّيْنَٰهُم بِسَحَرٍۢ

a favor from Us. 35

نِّعْمَةًۭ مِّنْ عِندِنَا

Thus do We reward whoever is grateful. 35

كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَ

He had indeed warned them of Our Strike, but they doubted the warnings.i 36

وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِ

They sought to turn him away from his guests, so We blinded their eyes: 'Taste, then, My punishment and My warnings.' 37

وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

A settled punishment indeed overtook them at early morning, 38

وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌۭ مُّسْتَقِرٌّۭ

'Taste, then, My punishment and My warnings.' 39

فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ

We have indeed made the Recitation easy for remembrance: is there then anyone to take heed? 40

وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ

The warnings had indeed come to Fir'awn's clan.i 41

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُ

They denied all Our signs, so We seized them with the seizing of one mighty and capable. 42

كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍۢ مُّقْتَدِرٍ

Are those of you who deny better than those, or do you have an exemption in the Formularies?i 43

أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌۭ مِّنْ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌۭ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ

Or do they say: 'We are a united group, [we will be] victorious'? 44

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌۭ مُّنتَصِرٌۭ

The group will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in flight]. 45

سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَ

Rather, the Hour is their appointed time, 46

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ

and the Hour is more terrible and more bitter. 46

وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ

The severed are indeed in error and madness, the Day they are dragged into the Fire upon their faces: 'Taste the touch of Saqar.'i 48

إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَٰلٍۢ وَسُعُرٍۢ يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَ

We have indeed created every thing according to a measure. 49

إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَٰهُ بِقَدَرٍۢ

And Our command is but one, like the blink of an eye. 50

وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌۭ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِ

We have indeed destroyed your likes: is there then anyone to take heed? 51

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍۢ

And everything they did is [recorded] in the Formularies.i 52

وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍۢ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ

And everything, small or great, is inscribed. 53

وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍۢ وَكَبِيرٍۢ مُّسْتَطَرٌ

The mindful are indeed in gardens and by a river, in a seat of truth, near a Sovereign, All-Capable. 55

إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّٰتٍۢ وَنَهَرٍۢ فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍۢ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭ
