Sourate Al-Waqi'a (56) vowelled

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. When the Event occurs, none will be able to deny its coming.i 2

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ

Abasing [some], exalting [others] — when the earth is shaken with a violent shaking, and the mountains are crushed to powder, becoming scattered dust, and you become three categories. 7

خَافِضَةٌۭ رَّافِعَةٌ إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّۭا وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءًۭ مُّنۢبَثًّۭا وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا ثَلَٰثَةًۭ

The companions of the right — what are the companions of the right? 8

فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ

And the companions of the left — what are the companions of the left? 9

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ

And the foremost, the foremost... 10

وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ

Those are the ones brought near, in the gardens of bliss. 12

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

A multitude from the first [generations] and few from the last, on woven couches, reclining on them, face to face. 16

ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَقَلِيلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ

Around them will circulate youths of eternal freshness, with cups, ewers, and a cup [drawn] from a gushing spring — from which they will neither ache nor be intoxicated — and fruit of their choosing, and the flesh of birds that they desire.i 21

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌۭ مُّخَلَّدُونَ بِأَكْوَابٍۢ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍۢ مِّن مَّعِينٍۢ لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍۢ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ

And companions of listening and support, like well-guarded pearls, in reward for what they used to do.i 24

وَحُورٌ عِينٌۭ كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ

They will hear therein no vain talk and no incitement to transgression. 25

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا

Only the saying: "Peace, peace." 26

إِلَّا قِيلًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا

And the companions of the right — what are the companions of the right? 27

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ

Among thornless lote trees, and clustered banana trees, extended shade, flowing water, abundant fruit neither cut off nor forbidden, and raised couches. 34

فِى سِدْرٍۢ مَّخْضُودٍۢ وَطَلْحٍۢ مَّنضُودٍۢ وَظِلٍّۢ مَّمْدُودٍۢ وَمَآءٍۢ مَّسْكُوبٍۢ وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ كَثِيرَةٍۢ لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍۢ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍۢ وَفُرُشٍۢ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ

We produced them in a [new] production, and made them beings inaugural, loving, fertile and of shared stock, for the companions of the right.i 38

إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءًۭ فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًۭا لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

A multitude from the first [generations] and a multitude from the last. 40

ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ

And the companions of the left — what are the companions of the left? 41

وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ

In scorching wind, and boiling water, and a shade of black smoke — neither cool nor pleasant. 44

فِى سَمُومٍۢ وَحَمِيمٍۢ وَظِلٍّۢ مِّن يَحْمُومٍۢ لَّا بَارِدٍۢ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ

Indeed, they lived before that in [heedless] ease. 45

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ

And they used to persist in the great transgression. 46

وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

And they used to say: "When we are dead and become earth and bones, will we truly be raised up? Or our forefathers?" 48

وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ

قالون السوسي

Say: "Indeed, the first and the last will surely be gathered together at the appointed time of a known day." 50

قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْءَاخِرِينَ لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ

Then indeed you, O astray, denying ones, will eat from the tree of Zaqqum, and fill your bellies with it, and drink on top of it boiling water, drinking as thirsty camels drink. 55

ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍۢ مِّن زَقُّومٍۢ فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ

This is their welcome on the Day of Reckoning.i 56

هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ

It is We who created you. 57

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْ

So why do you not believe? 57

فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ

Have you considered that which you emit? Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator? 59

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَ

It is We who have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun in replacing you with your likenesses and producing you in that which you do not know. 61

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

And you have already known the first creation. 62

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ

So why do you not remember? 62

فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

Have you considered that which you sow? Is it you who make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64

أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ

If We willed, We could make it debris, and you would remain lamenting: "We are indeed ruined! Rather, we are dispossessed." 67

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًۭا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

Have you considered the water that you drink? Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender? 69

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ

If We willed, We could make it bitter/salty. 70

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًۭا

So why are you not grateful? 70

فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ

Have you considered the fire that you kindle? Is it you who caused its tree to grow, or are We the Grower? 72

أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ

We made it a reminder and a benefit for the travelers. 73

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَمَتَٰعًۭا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ

So glorify the Name of your Guardian, the Immense. 74

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ

No! I swear by the positions of the stars — and indeed, it is a great oath, if you but knew — indeed, it is a noble Recitation, in a well-guarded scripture, which none touch except the purified.i 79

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ فِى كِتَٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ

A revelation from the Guardian of all beings.i 80

تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Is it this discourse that you treat with disdain, and do you make your denial [your response to your] provision? 82

أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ

Then why, when [the soul] reaches the throat, and you at that moment are looking on, and We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see — then why, if you were not subject to reckoning, do you not bring it back, if you are truthful?i 87

فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَ

As for the one who is among those brought near: rest, and fragrance, and a garden of bliss. 89

فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍۢ

As for the one who is among the companions of the right: "Peace to you," from the companions of the right. 91

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ فَسَلَٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ

As for the one who is among the denying, astray ones: a welcome of boiling water, and burning in the Blazing Fire. 94

وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ

Indeed, this is the truth of certainty. 95

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ

So glorify the Name of your Guardian, the Immense. 96

فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
