Al-Waqi'a
Is It You, or Is It We?
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. When the Event occurs, none will be able to deny its coming.
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌAbasing [some], exalting [others] — when the earth is shaken with a violent shaking, and the mountains are crushed to powder, becoming scattered dust, and you become three categories.
خَافِضَةٌۭ رَّافِعَةٌ إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّۭا وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّۭا فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءًۭ مُّنۢبَثًّۭا وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًۭا ثَلَٰثَةًۭThe companions of the right side — what are the companions of the right side?
فَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِAnd the companions of the left side — what are the companions of the left side?
وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِAnd the foremost, the foremost...
وَٱلسَّٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّٰبِقُونَThose are the ones brought near, in the gardens of bliss.
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ فِى جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِA multitude from the first [generations] and few from the last, on woven couches, reclining on them, face to face.
ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَقَلِيلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍۢ مَّوْضُونَةٍۢ مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ- 56:21ورش
Around them will circulate children made eternal, with goblets, ewers, and a cup [drawn] from a gushing spring — from which they will neither ache nor be intoxicated — and fruit of their choosing, and the flesh of birds that they desire.
يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌۭ مُّخَلَّدُونَ بِأَكْوَابٍۢ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍۢ مِّن مَّعِينٍۢ لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍۢ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ And companions of listening and support, like well-guarded pearls, in recompense for what they used to do.
وَحُورٌ عِينٌۭ كَأَمْثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَThey will hear therein no idle talk and no incitement to transgression.
لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًۭا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًاOnly the saying: "Peace, peace."
إِلَّا قِيلًۭا سَلَٰمًۭا سَلَٰمًۭاAnd the companions of the right — what are the companions of the right?
وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِAmong thornless lote trees, and clustered banana trees, extended shade, flowing water, abundant fruit neither cut off nor forbidden, and raised couches.
فِى سِدْرٍۢ مَّخْضُودٍۢ وَطَلْحٍۢ مَّنضُودٍۢ وَظِلٍّۢ مَّمْدُودٍۢ وَمَآءٍۢ مَّسْكُوبٍۢ وَفَٰكِهَةٍۢ كَثِيرَةٍۢ لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍۢ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍۢ وَفُرُشٍۢ مَّرْفُوعَةٍWe brought them into being in a [new] coming-into-being, and made them beings inaugural, loving, fertile and of shared stock, for the companions of the right.
إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءًۭ فَجَعَلْنَٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًۭا لِّأَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِA multitude from the first [generations] and a multitude from the last.
ثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَثُلَّةٌۭ مِّنَ ٱلْءَاخِرِينَAnd the companions of the left — what are the companions of the left?
وَأَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِIn scorching wind, and boiling water, and a shade of black smoke — neither cool nor pleasant.
فِى سَمُومٍۢ وَحَمِيمٍۢ وَظِلٍّۢ مِّن يَحْمُومٍۢ لَّا بَارِدٍۢ وَلَا كَرِيمٍIndeed, they were before that among the privileged.
إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَAnd they used to persist in the immense perjury.
وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ- 56:48ورشقالونالسوسي
And they used to say: "When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we be resurrected — we, or our earliest forefathers?"
وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًۭا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ Say: "Indeed, the first and the last will surely be gathered together at the appointment of a known day."
قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْءَاخِرِينَ لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوْمٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢThen surely you, O astray, denying ones, will eat from the tree of Zaqqoum, and fill your bellies with it, and drink on top of it boiling water, drinking as thirsty camels drink.
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ لَءَاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍۢ مِّن زَقُّومٍۢ فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِThis is their welcome on the Day of Retribution.
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِIt is We who created you.
نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَٰكُمْSo why do you not declare it true?
فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَHave you considered that which you emit? Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator?
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَٰلِقُونَIt is We who have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun in replacing you with your likenesses and producing you in that which you do not know.
نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَAnd you have already known the first genesis.
وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰSo why do you not remember?
فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَHave you considered that which you cultivate? Is it you who sow it, or are We the Sower?
أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَIf We willed, We could make it debris, and you would remain lamenting: "We are surely ruined! Rather, we are dispossessed."
لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَٰهُ حُطَٰمًۭا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَHave you considered the water that you drink? Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَIf We willed, We could make it bitter.
لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَٰهُ أُجَاجًۭاSo why are you not grateful?
فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَHave you considered the fire that you kindle? Is it you who brought its tree into being, or are We the One who brings it into being?
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَWe made it a reminder and a benefit for the travelers.
نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَٰهَا تَذْكِرَةًۭ وَمَتَٰعًۭا لِّلْمُقْوِينَSo glorify in the name of your Guardian, the Immense.
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِNo! I swear by the positions of the stars — and indeed, it is an immense oath, if you but knew — indeed, it is a noble Recitation, in a well-guarded scripture, which none touch except the purified.
فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌۭ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌۭ كَرِيمٌۭ فِى كِتَٰبٍۢ مَّكْنُونٍۢ لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَA revealed descent from the Guardian of all beings.
تَنزِيلٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَIs it this discourse that you treat with complaisance, and do you make your denial [your response to your] provision?
أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَThen why, when [the soul] reaches the throat, and you at that moment are looking on, and We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see — then why, if you were not subject to retribution, do you not bring it back, if you are truthful?
فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍۢ تَنظُرُونَ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَٰدِقِينَAs for the one who is among those brought near: rest, and fragrance, and a garden of bliss.
فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ فَرَوْحٌۭ وَرَيْحَانٌۭ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍۢAs for the one who is among the companions of the right: "Peace to you," from the companions of the right.
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ فَسَلَٰمٌۭ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِAs for the one who is among the denying, astray ones: a welcome of boiling water, and an immersion in the Blaze.
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ فَنُزُلٌۭ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍۢ وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍSurely, this is the truth of certainty.
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِSo glorify in the name of your Guardian, the Immense.
فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ
