Al-Mumtahana
The Boundary of Alliance
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who have believed! Do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies,
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَّخِذُوا۟ عَدُوِّى وَعَدُوَّكُمْ أَوْلِيَآءَoffering them affection, while they have disowned the truth that has come to you,
تُلْقُونَ إِلَيْهِم بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا۟ بِمَا جَآءَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْحَقِّdriving out the messenger and yourselves, because you believe in God, your Guardian.
يُخْرِجُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَإِيَّاكُمْ أَن تُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ رَبِّكُمْIf you went forth to strive in My way and seek My pleasure, [do not ally with them] confiding your affection to them secretly, while I know best what you have concealed and what you have revealed.
إِن كُنتُمْ خَرَجْتُمْ جِهَٰدًۭا فِى سَبِيلِى وَٱبْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِى تُسِرُّونَ إِلَيْهِم بِٱلْمَوَدَّةِ وَأَنَا۠ أَعْلَمُ بِمَآ أَخْفَيْتُمْ وَمَآ أَعْلَنتُمْAnd whoever among you does this has strayed from the straight path.
وَمَن يَفْعَلْهُ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِIf they overtake you, they will be enemies to you, and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil,
إِن يَثْقَفُوكُمْ يَكُونُوا۟ لَكُمْ أَعْدَآءًۭ وَيَبْسُطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْكُمْ أَيْدِيَهُمْ وَأَلْسِنَتَهُم بِٱلسُّوٓءِand they would like you to disown.
وَوَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تَكْفُرُونَNeither your kinship nor your children will benefit you,
لَن تَنفَعَكُمْ أَرْحَامُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَٰدُكُمْ- 60:3ورش
on the Day of Appearance He will separate between you.
يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ يَفْصِلُ بَيْنَكُمْ And God sees perfectly what you do.
وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌۭ- 60:4ورش
You have had a good example in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people: We are clear of you and of what you obey besides God; we disown you, and there has appeared between us and you enmity and hatred forever, until you believe in God alone — except the saying of Ibrahim to his father: I will surely ask forgiveness for you, and I possess nothing for you against God.
قَدْ كَانَتْ لَكُمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌۭ فِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ إِذْ قَالُوا۟ لِقَوْمِهِمْ إِنَّا بُرَءَٰٓؤُا۟ مِنكُمْ وَمِمَّا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَفَرْنَا بِكُمْ وَبَدَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْعَدَٰوَةُ وَٱلْبَغْضَآءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّىٰ تُؤْمِنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَحْدَهُۥٓ إِلَّا قَوْلَ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ لَأَسْتَغْفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَآ أَمْلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍۢ Our Guardian, upon You we rely, and to You we turn, and to You is the destination.
رَّبَّنَا عَلَيْكَ تَوَكَّلْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ أَنَبْنَا وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلْمَصِيرُOur Guardian, do not make us a trial for those who disown,
رَبَّنَا لَا تَجْعَلْنَا فِتْنَةًۭ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟and forgive us, our Guardian.
وَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا رَبَّنَآYou, indeed, are the All-Powerful, the Wise.
إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ- 60:6ورش
You have indeed had in them a good example, for whoever hopes for [the meeting with] God and the Last Day.
لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِيهِمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌۭ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْءَاخِرَ And whoever turns away — indeed God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
وَمَن يَتَوَلَّ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلْغَنِىُّ ٱلْحَمِيدُIt may be that God will place affection between you and those you have held as enemies among them,
عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَجْعَلَ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَ ٱلَّذِينَ عَادَيْتُم مِّنْهُم مَّوَدَّةًۭand God is Capable,
وَٱللَّهُ قَدِيرٌۭand God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭGod does not forbid you from being virtuous and equitable toward those who did not fight you concerning the Law and did not expel you from your homes.
لَّا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَٰتِلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمْ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْGod indeed loves the equitable.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَGod only forbids you from taking as allies those who fought you concerning the Law, expelled you from your homes, and supported your expulsion.
إِنَّمَا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ قَٰتَلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَأَخْرَجُوكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمْ وَظَٰهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْرَاجِكُمْ أَن تَوَلَّوْهُمْAnd whoever allies with them — those are the wrongdoers.
وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُمْ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَO you who have believed! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا جَآءَكُمُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتُ مُهَٰجِرَٰتٍۢ فَٱمْتَحِنُوهُنَّGod knows best their faith.
ٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِإِيمَٰنِهِنَّIf you know them to be believers, do not return them to those who disown.
فَإِنْ عَلِمْتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤْمِنَٰتٍۢ فَلَا تَرْجِعُوهُنَّ إِلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِThey are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them.
لَا هُنَّ حِلٌّۭ لَّهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّAnd give them what they have spent.
وَءَاتُوهُم مَّآ أَنفَقُوا۟There is no blame upon you in marrying them when you give them their rewards.
وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَن تَنكِحُوهُنَّ إِذَآ ءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّAnd do not hold to the [marriage] ties of those women who disown.
وَلَا تُمْسِكُوا۟ بِعِصَمِ ٱلْكَوَافِرِAsk for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent.
وَسْـَٔلُوا۟ مَآ أَنفَقْتُمْ وَلْيَسْـَٔلُوا۟ مَآ أَنفَقُوا۟That is the judgment of God; He judges between you.
ذَٰلِكُمْ حُكْمُ ٱللَّهِ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَكُمْAnd God is All-Knowing, Wise.
وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۭAnd if any of your wives escape from you to those who disown, and you then pay back in kind, then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent.
وَإِن فَاتَكُمْ شَىْءٌۭ مِّنْ أَزْوَٰجِكُمْ إِلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ فَعَاقَبْتُمْ فَـَٔاتُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ذَهَبَتْ أَزْوَٰجُهُم مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنفَقُوا۟And guard yourselves toward God, in whom you believe.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنتُم بِهِۦ مُؤْمِنُونَ- 60:12ورشقالون
O Prophet! When believing women come to you to pledge allegiance to you that they will not associate anything with God, not steal, not commit fornication, not kill their children, not bring forth slander they have invented between their hands and feet, and not disobey you in what is recognized, accept their pledge and ask God's forgiveness for them.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ إِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنَٰتُ يُبَايِعْنَكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن لَّا يُشْرِكْنَ بِٱللَّهِ شَيْـًۭٔا وَلَا يَسْرِقْنَ وَلَا يَزْنِينَ وَلَا يَقْتُلْنَ أَوْلَٰدَهُنَّ وَلَا يَأْتِينَ بِبُهْتَٰنٍۢ يَفْتَرِينَهُۥ بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِنَّ وَأَرْجُلِهِنَّ وَلَا يَعْصِينَكَ فِى مَعْرُوفٍۢ فَبَايِعْهُنَّ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُنَّ ٱللَّهَ Indeed, God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭO you who have believed! Do not take as allies a people with whom God is angry, who have lost hope of the last life, just as those who disown have lost hope of the companions of the graves.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَتَوَلَّوْا۟ قَوْمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ قَدْ يَئِسُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْءَاخِرَةِ كَمَا يَئِسَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مِنْ أَصْحَٰبِ ٱلْقُبُورِ
