Al-Anfal
What Gives You Life
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. They ask you about the surpluses.
بِسْمِ اِ۬للَّهِ اِ۬لرَّحْمَٰنِ اِ۬لرَّحِيمِ يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ اِ۬لْأَنفَالِۖ
Say: "The surpluses belong to God and the messenger.
قُلِ اِ۬لْأَنفَالُ لِلهِ وَالرَّسُولِۖ
So guard yourselves toward God, and make sound what is between you,
فَاتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَأَصْلِحُواْ ذَاتَ بَيْنِكُمْۖ
and defer to God and His messenger, if you are believers."
وَأَطِيعُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَۖ
The believers are only those whose cores tremble when God is remembered, whose faith increases when His signs are recited to them, and who entrust themselves to their Guardian,
إِنَّمَا اَ۬لْمُؤْمِنُونَ اَ۬لذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اَ۬للَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُهُۥ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَٰناٗ وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَۖ
who maintain the Contact, and who spend from what We have provided them — those are the true believers.
اَ۬لذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ اَ۬لصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقّاٗۖ
They have degrees with their Guardian, a forgiveness, and a generous provision.
لَّهُمْ دَرَجَٰتٌ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ وَمَغْفِرَةٞ وَرِزْقٞ كَرِيمٞۖ
As when your Guardian brought you out of your house in truth, while a fraction of believers were surely averse to it, arguing with you about the truth once it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death, while they looked on.
۞ كَمَا أَخْرَجَكَ رَبُّكَ مِنۢ بَيْتِكَ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقاٗ مِّنَ اَ۬لْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَكَٰرِهُونَ يُجَٰدِلُونَكَ فِے اِ۬لْحَقِّ بَعْدَ مَا تَبَيَّنَ كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى اَ۬لْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَۖ
And when God promised you that one of the two groups would be yours, while you wished it would be the one without arms.
وَإِذْ يَعِدُكُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ إِحْدَى اَ۬لطَّآئِفَتَيْنِ أَنَّهَا لَكُمْ وَتَوَدُّونَ أَنَّ غَيْرَ ذَاتِ اِ۬لشَّوْكَةِ تَكُونُ لَكُمْۖ
But God wanted, by His words, to make the truth prevail and to cut off, to the last remnant, those who disown, so as to make the truth prevail and to render falsehood vain, however much the severed detest it.
وَيُرِيدُ اُ۬للَّهُ أَنْ يُّحِقَّ اَ۬لْحَقَّ بِكَلِمَٰتِهِۦ وَيَقْطَعَ دَابِرَ اَ۬لْكَٰفِرِينَ لِيُحِقَّ اَ۬لْحَقَّ وَيُبْطِلَ اَ۬لْبَٰطِلَ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ اَ۬لْمُجْرِمُونَۖ
When you called on your Guardian to rescue you, and He answered you: "I reinforce you with a thousand Agents, following one another."
إِذْ تَسْتَغِيثُونَ رَبَّكُمْ فَاسْتَجَابَ لَكُمْ أَنِّے مُمِدُّكُم بِأَلْفٖ مِّنَ اَ۬لْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ مُرْدَفِينَۖ
And God made it only good tidings, and so that your cores might be calmed by it.
وَمَا جَعَلَهُ اُ۬للَّهُ إِلَّا بُشْرَىٰ وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ بِهِۦ قُلُوبُكُمْۖ
But help comes only from God,
وَمَا اَ۬لنَّصْرُ إِلَّا مِنْ عِندِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
for God is All-Powerful, Wise.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌۖ
When He covered you with drowsiness, as a security from Himself, and sent down upon you, from the sky, water, to purify you with it, to remove from you the defilement of the Diverter, to bind your cores, and to make firm your steps with it.
إِذْ يُغْشِيكُمُ اُ۬لنُّعَاسَ أَمَنَةٗ مِّنْهُ وَيُنَزِّلُ عَلَيْكُم مِّنَ اَ۬لسَّمَآءِ مَآءٗ لِّيُطَهِّرَكُم بِهِۦ وَيُذْهِبَ عَنكُمْ رِجْزَ اَ۬لشَّيْطَٰنِ وَلِيَرْبِطَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِكُمْ وَيُثَبِّتَ بِهِ اِ۬لْأَقْدَامَۖ
When your Guardian revealed to the Agents: "I am with you; so make firm those who have believed.
إِذْ يُوحِے رَبُّكَ إِلَى اَ۬لْمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ أَنِّے مَعَكُمْ فَثَبِّتُواْ اُ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْۖ
I will cast terror into the cores of those who disown.
سَأُلْقِے فِے قُلُوبِ اِ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ اُ۬لرُّعْبَۖ
So multiply the captives beyond, and multiply among them those of the greatest exchange value."
فَاضْرِبُواْ فَوْقَ اَ۬لْأَعْنَاقِ وَاضْرِبُواْ مِنْهُمْ كُلَّ بَنَانٖۖ
That is because they set themselves in breach against God and His messenger.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ شَآقُّواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ
And whoever sets himself in breach against God and His messenger — God is indeed severe in sanction.
وَمَنْ يُّشَاقِقِ اِ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ شَدِيدُ اُ۬لْعِقَابِۖ
That is for you: taste it, then!
ذَٰلِكُمْ فَذُوقُوهُۖ
And for those who disown is reserved the punishment of the Fire.
وَأَنَّ لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابَ اَ۬لنَّارِۖ
O you who have believed! When you meet those who disown, on the offensive, do not turn your backs to them.
۞ يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ إِذَا لَقِيتُمُ اُ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ زَحْفاٗ فَلَا تُوَلُّوهُمُ اُ۬لْأَدْبَٰرَۖ
And whoever, on that day, turns his back to them — except as a maneuver for battle, or a regrouping with a battalion — incurs God's anger, and his resort will be Jahannam.
وَمَنْ يُّوَلِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٖ دُبُرَهُۥ إِلَّا مُتَحَرِّفاٗ لِّقِتَالٍ أَوْ مُتَحَيِّزاً إِلَىٰ فِئَةٖ فَقَدْ بَآءَ بِغَضَبٖ مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَمَأْوَيٰهُ جَهَنَّمُۖ
And what an evil destination!
وَبِئْسَ اَ۬لْمَصِيرُۖ
So it was not you who killed them,
فَلَمْ تَقْتُلُوهُمْۖ
but it was God who killed them.
وَلَٰكِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ قَتَلَهُمْۖ
And you did not throw, when you threw, but it was God who threw,
وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَٰكِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ رَمَىٰۖ
so as to test the believers with a good testing, from Himself,
وَلِيُبْلِيَ اَ۬لْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْهُ بَلَآءً حَسَناًۖ
for God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٞۖ
That is for you! And God makes frail the scheming of those who disown.
ذَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مُوَهِّنٞ كَيْدَ اَ۬لْكَٰفِرِينَۖ
If you sought the opening, the opening has already come to you;
إِن تَسْتَفْتِحُواْ فَقَدْ جَآءَكُمُ اُ۬لْفَتْحُۖ
and if you cease, it will be better for you;
وَإِن تَنتَهُواْ فَهْوَ خَيْرٞ لَّكُمْۖ
but if you repeat it, We will repeat it,
وَإِن تَعُودُواْ نَعُدْۖ
and your battalion will not avail you at all, even if it is numerous;
وَلَن تُغْنِيَ عَنكُمْ فِئَتُكُمْ شَئْاٗ وَلَوْ كَثُرَتْۖ
for God is with the believers.
وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مَعَ اَ۬لْمُؤْمِنِينَۖ
O you who have believed! Defer to God and His messenger,
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ أَطِيعُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ
and do not turn your backs on him, while you hear.
وَلَا تَوَلَّوْاْ عَنْهُ وَأَنتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَۖ
And do not be like those who say: "We have heard", while they do not hear.
وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَالذِينَ قَالُواْ سَمِعْنَا وَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَۖ
The worst of living beings, with God, are indeed the deaf, the mute, those who do not reason.
۞ إِنَّ شَرَّ اَ۬لدَّوَآبِّ عِندَ اَ۬للَّهِ اِ۬لصُّمُّ اُ۬لْبُكْمُ اُ۬لذِينَ لَا يَعْقِلُونَۖ
And had God known any good in them, He would certainly have made them hear;
وَلَوْ عَلِمَ اَ۬للَّهُ فِيهِمْ خَيْراٗ لَّأَسْمَعَهُمْۖ
and even had He made them hear, they would have turned their backs, turning away.
وَلَوْ أَسْمَعَهُمْ لَتَوَلَّواْ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَۖ
O you who have believed! Respond to God and to the messenger, when he calls you to what gives you life,
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ اُ۪سْتَجِيبُواْ لِلهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْۖ
and know that God interposes between man and his core, and that it is to Him that you will be gathered.
وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ يَحُولُ بَيْنَ اَ۬لْمَرْءِ وَقَلْبِهِۦ وَأَنَّهُۥ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَۖ
And guard yourselves against a trial that will not strike only those among you who have done wrong,
وَاتَّقُواْ فِتْنَةٗ لَّا تُصِيبَنَّ اَ۬لذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مِنكُمْ خَآصَّةٗۖ
and know that God is severe in sanction.
وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ شَدِيدُ اُ۬لْعِقَابِۖ
And remember when you were few, reduced to weakness on the earth, fearing that men would snatch you away; He then took you in, fortified you with His help, and provided you with wholesome things — perhaps you will be grateful.
وَاذْكُرُواْ إِذْ أَنتُمْ قَلِيلٞ مُّسْتَضْعَفُونَ فِے اِ۬لْأَرْضِ تَخَافُونَ أَنْ يَّتَخَطَّفَكُمُ اُ۬لنَّاسُ فَـَٔاوَيٰكُمْ وَأَيَّدَكُم بِنَصْرِهِۦ وَرَزَقَكُم مِّنَ اَ۬لطَّيِّبَٰتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَۖ
O you who have believed! Do not betray God and the messenger, and do not betray your trusts, while you know.
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَخُونُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ وَتَخُونُواْ أَمَٰنَٰتِكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَۖ
And know that your goods and your children are but a trial, and that with God there is an immense reward.
وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّمَا أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَأَوْلَٰدُكُمْ فِتْنَةٞ وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ عِندَهُۥ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٞۖ
O you who have believed! If you guard yourselves toward God, He will grant you a Discernment, cover your evil deeds for you, and forgive you.
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ إِن تَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَاناٗ وَيُكَفِّرْ عَنكُمْ سَيِّـَٔاتِكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْۖ
And God holds the immense favor.
وَاللَّهُ ذُو اُ۬لْفَضْلِ اِ۬لْعَظِيمِۖ
And when those who disown were plotting against you, to immobilize you, kill you, or expel you.
وَإِذْ يَمْكُرُ بِكَ اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيُثْبِتُوكَ أَوْ يَقْتُلُوكَ أَوْ يُخْرِجُوكَۖ
And they plotted, and God plotted,
وَيَمْكُرُونَ وَيَمْكُرُ اُ۬للَّهُۖ
and God is the best of those who plot.
وَاللَّهُ خَيْرُ اُ۬لْمَٰكِرِينَۖ
And when Our signs are recited to them, they say: "We have indeed heard; if we wanted, we would say the same;
وَإِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتُنَا قَالُواْ قَدْ سَمِعْنَا لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَقُلْنَا مِثْلَ هَٰذَا
these are nothing but legends of the ancients."
إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا أَسَٰطِيرُ اُ۬لْأَوَّلِينَۖ
And when they said: "O God! If this is indeed the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky, or bring us a painful punishment."
۞ وَإِذْ قَالُواْ اُ۬للَّهُمَّ إِن كَانَ هَٰذَا هُوَ اَ۬لْحَقَّ مِنْ عِندِكَ فَأَمْطِرْ عَلَيْنَا حِجَارَةٗ مِّنَ اَ۬لسَّمَآءِ اَ۬وِ اِ۪ئْتِنَا بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٖۖ
But it was not for God to punish them while you were among them,
وَمَا كَانَ اَ۬للَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَأَنتَ فِيهِمْۖ
and it was not for God to punish them while they were asking forgiveness.
وَمَا كَانَ اَ۬للَّهُ مُعَذِّبَهُمْ وَهُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَۖ
And what reason would they have for God not to punish them, while they bar from the inviolable place of prostration, without even being its allies?
وَمَا لَهُمْ أَلَّا يُعَذِّبَهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ وَهُمْ يَصُدُّونَ عَنِ اِ۬لْمَسْجِدِ اِ۬لْحَرَامِ وَمَا كَانُواْ أَوْلِيَآءَهُۥۖ
Its allies are only those who guard themselves,
إِنْ أَوْلِيَآؤُهُۥ إِلَّا اَ۬لْمُتَّقُونَۖ
but most of them do not know.
وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَۖ
And their Contact, near the House, was nothing but a tumult and a barring.
وَمَا كَانَ صَلَاتُهُمْ عِندَ اَ۬لْبَيْتِ إِلَّا مُكَآءٗ وَتَصْدِيَةٗۖ
Taste then the punishment, for having disowned.
فَذُوقُواْ اُ۬لْعَذَابَ بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَۖ
Those who disown indeed spend their goods so as to bar from the way of God.
إِنَّ اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ لِيَصُدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
So they will spend them, then it will become for them a desolation, then they will be overcome.
فَسَيُنفِقُونَهَا ثُمَّ تَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ حَسْرَةٗ ثُمَّ يُغْلَبُونَۖ
And those who disown will be gathered toward Jahannam, so that God may distinguish the vile from the wholesome, place the vile, part upon part, make of it a whole heap, and put it into Jahannam.
وَالذِينَ كَفَرُواْ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ يُحْشَرُونَ لِيَمِيزَ اَ۬للَّهُ اُ۬لْخَبِيثَ مِنَ اَ۬لطَّيِّبِ وَيَجْعَلَ اَ۬لْخَبِيثَ بَعْضَهُۥ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٖ فَيَرْكُمَهُۥ جَمِيعاٗ فَيَجْعَلَهُۥ فِے جَهَنَّمَۖ
Those are the losers.
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْخَٰسِرُونَۖ
Say to those who disown: if they cease, what is already bygone will be forgiven them;
قُل لِّلذِينَ كَفَرُواْ إِنْ يَّنتَهُواْ يُغْفَرْ لَهُم مَّا قَدْ سَلَفَۖ
but if they repeat it, the norm of the ancients has already come to pass.
وَإِنْ يَّعُودُواْ فَقَدْ مَضَتْ سُنَّتُ اُ۬لْأَوَّلِينَۖ
And fight them until there is no more trial, and the Law is entirely for God.
وَقَٰتِلُوهُمْ حَتَّىٰ لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٞ وَيَكُونَ اَ۬لدِّينُ كُلُّهُۥ لِلهِۖ
But if they cease, then God is indeed All-Seeing of what they do.
فَإِنِ اِ۪نتَهَوْاْ فَإِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٞۖ
And if they turn their backs, know then that God is your nearest Guarantor.
وَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ فَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مَوْلَيٰكُمْۖ
What an excellent Guarantor,
نِعْمَ اَ۬لْمَوْلَىٰۖ
and what an excellent Helper!
وَنِعْمَ اَ۬لنَّصِيرُۖ
And know that, of everything you take as spoils, a fifth belongs to God, to the messenger, to relatives, to orphans, to the destitute, and to the passing traveler — if you believe in God and in what We sent down upon Our obedient one, on the day of the Discernment, the day the two forces met.
۞ وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّمَا غَنِمْتُم مِّن شَےْءٖ فَأَنَّ لِلهِ خُمُسَهُۥ وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَلِذِے اِ۬لْقُرْبَىٰ وَالْيَتَٰمَىٰ وَالْمَسَٰكِينِ وَابْنِ اِ۬لسَّبِيلِ إِن كُنتُمْ ءَامَنتُم بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَىٰ عَبْدِنَا يَوْمَ اَ۬لْفُرْقَانِ يَوْمَ اَ۪لْتَقَى اَ۬لْجَمْعَٰنِۖ
And God is capable of all things.
وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَےْءٖ قَدِيرٌۖ
When you were on the nearer side, and they were on the farther side, and the cavalry was lower than you.
إِذْ أَنتُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ اِ۬لدُّنْيَا وَهُم بِالْعُدْوَةِ اِ۬لْقُصْوَىٰ وَالرَّكْبُ أَسْفَلَ مِنكُمْۖ
And had you made an appointment, you would have differed over that appointment;
وَلَوْ تَوَاعَدتُّمْ لَاخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِے اِ۬لْمِيعَٰدِۖ
but so that God might bring to its term a matter that was a thing done, so that whoever was to be annihilated might be annihilated upon clear evidence, and whoever was to live might live upon clear evidence.
وَلَٰكِن لِّيَقْضِيَ اَ۬للَّهُ أَمْراٗ كَانَ مَفْعُولاٗ لِّيَهْلِكَ مَنْ هَلَكَ عَنۢ بَيِّنَةٖۖ وَيَحْيَىٰ مَنْ حَـِۧيَ عَنۢ بَيِّنَةٖۖ
And God is surely the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
وَإِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ لَسَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌۖ
When God showed them to you, in your sleep, as few —
إِذْ يُرِيكَهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ فِے مَنَامِكَ قَلِيلاٗۖ
and had He shown them to you as many, you would certainly have given ground, and you would certainly have disputed among yourselves over the matter;
وَلَوْ أَرَيٰكَهُمْ كَثِيراٗ لَّفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَٰزَعْتُمْ فِے اِ۬لْأَمْرِۖ
but God kept all intact,
وَلَٰكِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ سَلَّمَۖ
for He is All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
إِنَّهُۥ عَلِيمُۢ بِذَاتِ اِ۬لصُّدُورِۖ
And when He showed them to you, when you met, as few in your eyes, and made you appear few in their eyes, so that God might bring to its term a matter that was a thing done.
وَإِذْ يُرِيكُمُوهُمْ إِذِ اِ۪لْتَقَيْتُمْ فِے أَعْيُنِكُمْ قَلِيلاٗ وَيُقَلِّلُكُمْ فِے أَعْيُنِهِمْ لِيَقْضِيَ اَ۬للَّهُ أَمْراٗ كَانَ مَفْعُولاٗۖ
And it is to God that all matters return.
وَإِلَى اَ۬للَّهِ تُرْجَعُ اُ۬لْأُمُورُۖ
O you who have believed! When you meet a battalion, stand firm, and remember God abundantly — perhaps you will succeed.
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ إِذَا لَقِيتُمْ فِئَةٗ فَاثْبُتُواْ وَاذْكُرُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ كَثِيراٗ لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَۖ
And defer to God and His messenger,
وَأَطِيعُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ
and do not dispute among yourselves, lest you give ground and your momentum depart;
وَلَا تَنَٰزَعُواْ فَتَفْشَلُواْ وَتَذْهَبَ رِيحُكُمْۖ
and be patient,
وَاصْبِرُواْۖ
for God is with the patient.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مَعَ اَ۬لصَّٰبِرِينَۖ
And do not be like those who came out of their abodes in wantonness and for show before mankind, and who bar from the way of God.
وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَالذِينَ خَرَجُواْ مِن دِيَٰرِهِم بَطَراٗ وَرِئَآءَ اَ۬لنَّاسِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
God encompasses perfectly what they do.
وَاللَّهُ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطٞۖ
And when the Diverter embellished their works for them, and said: "None, today, among mankind, can overcome you, and I am indeed for you a neighbor who grants asylum";
۞ وَإِذْ زَيَّنَ لَهُمُ اُ۬لشَّيْطَٰنُ أَعْمَٰلَهُمْ وَقَالَ لَا غَالِبَ لَكُمُ اُ۬لْيَوْمَ مِنَ اَ۬لنَّاسِ وَإِنِّے جَارٞ لَّكُمْۖ
but when the two battalions saw one another, he stepped back on his heels, and said: "I am indeed quit of you; I see what you do not see; I fear God."
فَلَمَّا تَرَآءَتِ اِ۬لْفِئَتَٰنِ نَكَصَ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنِّے بَرِےٓءٞ مِّنكُمْ إِنِّيَ أَرَىٰ مَا لَا تَرَوْنَ إِنِّيَ أَخَافُ اُ۬للَّهَۖ
God is severe in sanction.
وَاللَّهُ شَدِيدُ اُ۬لْعِقَابِۖ
When the hypocrites, and those in whose cores is a sickness, said: "Their Law has indeed deluded these people."
إِذْ يَقُولُ اُ۬لْمُنَٰفِقُونَ وَالذِينَ فِے قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ غَرَّ هَٰؤُلَآءِ دِينُهُمْۖ
But whoever entrusts himself to God — God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise.
وَمَنْ يَّتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اَ۬للَّهِ فَإِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٞۖ
And if you could see, when the Agents keep faithfully those who disowned,
وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذْ يَتَوَفَّى اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْۖ
multiplying their haul of them, whether they face forward or turn away in flight: "Taste the punishment of the burning fire!"
اُ۬لْمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَضْرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَٰرَهُمْ وَذُوقُواْ عَذَابَ اَ۬لْحَرِيقِۖ
That is for what your hands have prepared; and God is in no way one to wrong the constrained under compulsion.
ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ لَيْسَ بِظَلَّٰمٖ لِّلْعَبِيدِۖ
Like the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,
كَدَأْبِ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَۖ
and of those before them, who disowned the signs of God; God then seized them for their offenses,
وَالذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ اِ۬للَّهِ فَأَخَذَهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ بِذُنُوبِهِمْۖ
for God is strong, severe in sanction.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ قَوِيّٞ شَدِيدُ اُ۬لْعِقَابِۖ
That is because God never changes a blessing He has granted a people, until they change what is in themselves; and God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ لَمْ يَكُ مُغَيِّراٗ نِّعْمَةً أَنْعَمَهَا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُواْ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٞۖ
Like the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,
كَدَأْبِ ءَالِ فِرْعَوْنَۖ
and of those before them, who denied the signs of their Guardian; We then annihilated them for their offenses,
وَالذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ كَذَّبُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَهْلَكْنَٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمْۖ
and We drowned the clan of Fir'awn.
وَأَغْرَقْنَا ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَۖ
And all were wrongdoers.
وَكُلّٞ كَانُواْ ظَٰلِمِينَۖ
The worst of living beings, with God, are indeed those who disowned and who, henceforth, do not believe — those with whom you made a pact, and who, every time, break their pact, and who do not guard themselves.
إِنَّ شَرَّ اَ۬لدَّوَآبِّ عِندَ اَ۬للَّهِ اِ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ اَ۬لذِينَ عَٰهَدتَّ مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ يَنقُضُونَ عَهْدَهُمْ فِے كُلِّ مَرَّةٖ وَهُمْ لَا يَتَّقُونَۖ
So if you surprise them in war, scatter through them those who follow them, perhaps they will remember.
فَإِمَّا تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْ فِے اِ۬لْحَرْبِ فَشَرِّدْ بِهِم مَّنْ خَلْفَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَۖ
And if you fear betrayal from a people, denounce toward them, on equal terms,
وَإِمَّا تَخَافَنَّ مِن قَوْمٍ خِيَانَةٗ فَانۢبِذْ إِلَيْهِمْ عَلَىٰ سَوَآءٍۖ
for God does not love the traitors.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ لَا يُحِبُّ اُ۬لْخَآئِنِينَۖ
And do not by any means think that those who disown have gotten ahead,
وَلَا تَحْسِبَنَّ اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ سَبَقُواْۖ
for they cannot render Him powerless.
إِنَّهُمْ لَا يُعْجِزُونَۖ
And prepare, against them, whatever you can of strength and of horses held ready for battle,
۞ وَأَعِدُّواْ لَهُم مَّا اَ۪سْتَطَعْتُم مِّن قُوَّةٖ وَمِن رِّبَاطِ اِ۬لْخَيْلِۖ
so as to inspire reverence thereby in the enemy of God and your enemy, and others, besides them, whom you do not know:
تُرْهِبُونَ بِهِۦ عَدُوَّ اَ۬للَّهِ وَعَدُوَّكُمْ وَءَاخَرِينَ مِن دُونِهِمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَهُمُۖ
God, He, knows them.
اُ۬للَّهُ يَعْلَمُهُمْۖ
And whatever you spend in the way of God will be faithfully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
وَمَا تُنفِقُواْ مِن شَےْءٖ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ يُوَفَّ إِلَيْكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لَا تُظْلَمُونَۖ
And if they incline toward peace, incline toward it also, and entrust yourself to God,
وَإِن جَنَحُواْ لِلسَّلْمِ فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى اَ۬للَّهِۖ
for it is He, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ اَ۬لسَّمِيعُ اُ۬لْعَلِيمُۖ
And if they want to deceive you, then God suffices you.
وَإِنْ يُّرِيدُواْ أَنْ يَّخْدَعُوكَ فَإِنَّ حَسْبَكَ اَ۬للَّهُۖ
It is He who fortified you with His help and with the believers, and who reconciled their cores.
هُوَ اَ۬لذِے أَيَّدَكَ بِنَصْرِهِۦ وَبِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْۖ
Had you spent all that is on the earth, you would not have reconciled their cores,
لَوْ أَنفَقْتَ مَا فِے اِ۬لْأَرْضِ جَمِيعاٗ مَّا أَلَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْۖ
but it is God who reconciled them,
وَلَٰكِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْۖ
for He is All-Powerful, Wise.
إِنَّهُۥ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٞۖ
O Informant! God suffices you,
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لنَّبِےٓءُ حَسْبُكَ اَ۬للَّهُۖ
you and those of the believers who follow you.
وَمَنِ اِ۪تَّبَعَكَ مِنَ اَ۬لْمُؤْمِنِينَۖ
O Informant! Incite the believers to combat.
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لنَّبِےٓءُ حَرِّضِ اِ۬لْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَى اَ۬لْقِتَالِۖ
If there are, among you, twenty patient men, they will overcome two hundred;
إِنْ يَّكُن مِّنكُمْ عِشْرُونَ صَٰبِرُونَ يَغْلِبُواْ مِاْئَتَيْنِۖ
and if there are a hundred among you, they will overcome a thousand of those who disown, for they are a people who do not understand.
وَإِن تَكُن مِّنكُم مِّاْئَةٞ يَغْلِبُواْ أَلْفاٗ مِّنَ اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٞ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَۖ
Now, God has lightened things for you, and He has known that there was weakness in you.
اَ۬ءَلْٰنَ خَفَّفَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَنكُمْ وَعَلِمَ أَنَّ فِيكُمْ ضُعْفاٗۖ
So if there are a hundred among you, patient, they will overcome two hundred;
فَإِن تَكُن مِّنكُم مِّاْئَةٞ صَابِرَةٞ يَغْلِبُواْ مِاْئَتَيْنِۖ
and if there are a thousand among you, they will overcome two thousand, with God's permission.
وَإِنْ يَّكُن مِّنكُمْ أَلْفٞ يَغْلِبُواْ أَلْفَيْنِ بِإِذْنِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
God is with the patient.
وَاللَّهُ مَعَ اَ۬لصَّٰبِرِينَۖ
It was not for an informant to have captives, until he had fully subdued the land.
مَا كَانَ لِنَبِےٓءٍ أَنْ يَّكُونَ لَهُۥ أَسْرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يُثْخِنَ فِے اِ۬لْأَرْضِۖ
You wanted the fleeting goods of the present life,
تُرِيدُونَ عَرَضَ اَ۬لدُّنْيَاۖ
while God wants the last life.
وَاللَّهُ يُرِيدُ اُ۬لْأٓخِرَةَۖ
God is All-Powerful, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٞۖ
Had it not been for a prior register from God, an immense punishment would have touched you for what you took.
لَّوْلَا كِتَٰبٞ مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ سَبَقَ لَمَسَّكُمْ فِيمَا أَخَذتُّمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٞۖ
So eat of what you have taken as spoils, of what is permitted and wholesome,
فَكُلُواْ مِمَّا غَنِمْتُمْ حَلَٰلاٗ طَيِّباٗۖ
and guard yourselves toward God,
وَاتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَۖ
for God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞۖ
O Informant! Say to those of the captives in your hands: "If God knows any good in your cores, He will give you better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you."
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لنَّبِےٓءُ قُل لِّمَن فِے أَيْدِيكُم مِّنَ اَ۬لْأَسْرَىٰ إِنْ يَّعْلَمِ اِ۬للَّهُ فِے قُلُوبِكُمْ خَيْراٗ يُؤْتِكُمْ خَيْراٗ مِّمَّا أُخِذَ مِنكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْۖ
And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞۖ
And if they want to betray you, they have already betrayed God before, and He has given you power over them.
۞ وَإِنْ يُّرِيدُواْ خِيَانَتَكَ فَقَدْ خَانُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ مِن قَبْلُ فَأَمْكَنَ مِنْهُمْۖ
And God is All-Knowing, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۖ
Indeed, those who have believed, emigrated, and striven with their goods and their Selves in the way of God, and those who took them in and helped — those are allies of one another.
إِنَّ اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَهَاجَرُواْ وَجَٰهَدُواْ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَالذِينَ ءَاوَواْ وَّنَصَرُواْ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٖۖ
And those who believed without emigrating — you have, of their protection, no responsibility, until they emigrate.
وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَلَمْ يُهَاجِرُواْ مَا لَكُم مِّنْ وَّلَٰيَتِهِم مِّن شَےْءٍ حَتَّىٰ يُهَاجِرُواْۖ
And if they ask you for help in the name of the Law, help is incumbent upon you, except against a people between whom and you there is a solemn engagement.
وَإِنِ اِ۪سْتَنصَرُوكُمْ فِے اِ۬لدِّينِ فَعَلَيْكُمُ اُ۬لنَّصْرُ إِلَّا عَلَىٰ قَوْمِۢ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُم مِّيثَٰقٞۖ
And God is All-Seeing of what you do.
وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٞۖ
And those who disown are allies of one another.
وَالذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍۖ
If you do not do this, there will be a trial on earth, and great corruption.
إِلَّا تَفْعَلُوهُ تَكُن فِتْنَةٞ فِے اِ۬لْأَرْضِ وَفَسَادٞ كَبِيرٞۖ
And those who have believed, emigrated, and striven in the way of God, and those who took them in and helped — those are the true believers.
وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَهَاجَرُواْ وَجَٰهَدُواْ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَالذِينَ ءَاوَواْ وَّنَصَرُواْ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْمُؤْمِنُونَ حَقّاٗۖ
They have forgiveness and a generous provision.
لَّهُم مَّغْفِرَةٞ وَرِزْقٞ كَرِيمٞۖ
And those who believed afterward, emigrated, and strove with you — those are among you.
وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنۢ بَعْدُ وَهَاجَرُواْ وَجَٰهَدُواْ مَعَكُمْ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ مِنكُمْۖ
And those bound by kinship are closer to one another under God's Code,
وَأُوْلُواْ اُ۬لْأَرْحَامِ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلَىٰ بِبَعْضٖ فِے كِتَٰبِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
for God is All-Knowing of all things.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَےْءٍ عَلِيمُۢۖ
