Summary and links in the frieze
In the frieze He proclaims the quittance, sees the mobilization sort out his people, and says at last that God suffices him.
Read just before, 10 leads here: He must say: I am quit of what you do (10:41); sura 9 opens on the quittance of God and His messenger. 10
It leads to 8: He must say that God suffices him; in sura 8, God tells it to him: God suffices you. 8

The section begins here
Quittance, from God and His messenger, toward those of the associators with whom you had made a pact.
بَرَآءَةٞ مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى اَ۬لذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ اَ۬لْمُشْرِكِينَۖ
So move about freely in the land for four months,
فَسِيحُواْ فِے اِ۬لَارْضِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٖۖ
and know that you cannot render God powerless, and that God covers with disgrace those who disown.
وَاعْلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِے اِ۬للَّهِ وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مُخْزِے اِ۬لْكٰ۪فِرِينَۖ
And a proclamation from God and His messenger to mankind, on the Great Day of the Hajj: God is quit of the associators, and so is His messenger.
وَأَذَٰنٞ مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَى اَ۬لنَّاسِ يَوْمَ اَ۬لْحَجِّ اِ۬لَاكْبَرِ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ بَرِےٓءٞ مِّنَ اَ۬لْمُشْرِكِينَ وَرَسُولُهُۥۖ
So if you turn back, that is better for you;
فَإِن تُبْتُمْ فَهُوَ خَيْرٞ لَّكُمْۖ
but if you turn your backs, know that you cannot render God powerless.
وَإِن تَوَلَّيْتُمْ فَاعْلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّكُمْ غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِے اِ۬للَّهِۖ
And announce to those who have disowned a painful punishment — except those of the associators with whom you made a pact, and who then did not stint you in anything nor supported anyone against you: complete their pact toward them until its term,
وَبَشِّرِ اِ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِعَذَابٍ اَلِيمٍ اِلَّا اَ۬لذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّم مِّنَ اَ۬لْمُشْرِكِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنقُصُوكُمْ شَئْاٗ وَلَمْ يُظَٰهِرُواْ عَلَيْكُمُۥٓ أَحَداٗ فَأَتِمُّوٓاْ إِلَيْهِمْ عَهْدَهُمُۥٓ إِلَىٰ مُدَّتِهِمُۥٓۖ
for God loves those who guard themselves.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ يُحِبُّ اُ۬لْمُتَّقِينَۖ
When the inviolable months have run out, kill the associators wherever you find them; seize them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every point of observation.
۞ فَإِذَا اَ۪نسَلَخَ اَ۬لَاشْهُرُ اُ۬لْحُرُمُ فَاقْتُلُواْ اُ۬لْمُشْرِكِينَ حَيْثُ وَجَدتُّمُوهُمْ وَخُذُوهُمْ وَاحْصُرُوهُمْ وَاقْعُدُواْ لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٖۖ
But if they turn back, maintain the Contact, and give pure liberality, then leave their way clear,
فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ اُ۬لصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُاْ اُ۬لزَّكَوٰةَ فَخَلُّواْ سَبِيلَهُمُۥٓۖ
for God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞۖ
And if one of the associators asks you for asylum, grant him asylum, until he hears the word of God, then convey him to his place of safety.
وَإِنَ اَحَدٞ مِّنَ اَ۬لْمُشْرِكِينَ اَ۪سْتَجَارَكَ فَأَجِرْهُ حَتَّىٰ يَسْمَعَ كَلَٰمَ اَ۬للَّهِ ثُمَّ أَبْلِغْهُ مَامَنَهُۥۖ
That is because they are a people who do not know.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٞ لَّا يَعْلَمُونَۖ
How could there be, for the associators, a pact with God and with His messenger — except those with whom you made a pact near the inviolable place of prostration? As long as they stand straight with you, stand straight with them,
كَيْفَ يَكُونُ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ عَهْدٌ عِندَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَعِندَ رَسُولِهِۦٓ إِلَّا اَ۬لذِينَ عَٰهَدتُّمْ عِندَ اَ۬لْمَسْجِدِ اِ۬لْحَرَامِ فَمَا اَ۪سْتَقَٰمُواْ لَكُمْ فَاسْتَقِيمُواْ لَهُمُۥٓۖ
for God loves those who guard themselves.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ يُحِبُّ اُ۬لْمُتَّقِينَۖ
How, then? If they gained the upper hand over you, they would respect toward you neither kinship nor surety.
كَيْفَ وَإِنْ يَّظْهَرُواْ عَلَيْكُمْ لَا يَرْقُبُواْ فِيكُمُۥٓ إِلّاٗ وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۖ
They satisfy you with their mouths, while their cores refuse; and most of them are oversteppers.
يُرْضُونَكُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَتَاب۪ىٰ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ فَٰسِقُونَۖ
They bought, with the signs of God, a paltry price, and they barred from His way.
اَ۪شْتَرَوْاْ بِـَٔايَٰتِ اِ۬للَّهِ ثَمَناٗ قَلِيلاٗ فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦٓۖ
How evil is what they used to do!
إِنَّهُمْ سَآءَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَۖ
They respect, toward a believer, neither kinship nor surety.
لَا يَرْقُبُونَ فِے مُومِنٍ اِلّاٗ وَلَا ذِمَّةٗۖ
And those are the aggressors.
وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْمُعْتَدُونَۖ
If they turn back, maintain the Contact, and give pure liberality, then they are your brothers in the Law.
فَإِن تَابُواْ وَأَقَامُواْ اُ۬لصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَوُاْ اُ۬لزَّكَوٰةَ فَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ فِے اِ۬لدِّينِۖ
And We detail the signs for a people who know.
وَنُفَصِّلُ اُ۬لَايَٰتِ لِقَوْمٖ يَعْلَمُونَۖ
But if they violate their oaths after their pact, and attack your Law, then fight the guides of disowning,
۞ وَإِن نَّكَثُوٓاْ أَيْمَٰنَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ عَهْدِهِمْ وَطَعَنُواْ فِے دِينِكُمْ فَقَٰتِلُوٓاْ أَي۪مَّةَ اَ۬لْكُفْرِۖ
for their oaths are not valid — perhaps they will cease.
إِنَّهُمْ لَآ أَيْمَٰنَ لَهُمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَنتَهُونَۖ
Will you then not fight a people who violated their oaths, who were minded to expel the messenger, and who attacked you first? Would you dread them?
أَلَا تُقَٰتِلُونَ قَوْماٗ نَّكَثُوٓاْ أَيْمَٰنَهُمْ وَهَمُّواْ بِإِخْرَاجِ اِ۬لرَّسُولِ وَهُم بَدَءُوكُمُۥٓ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ اَتَخْشَوْنَهُمْۖ
God is more worthy that you should dread Him, if you are believers.
فَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَوْهُ إِن كُنتُم مُّومِنِينَۖ
Fight them: God will punish them by your hands, cover them with disgrace, help you against them, heal the chests of a believing people, and remove the rage of their cores.
قَٰتِلُوهُمْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ وَيُخْزِهِمْ وَيَنصُرْكُمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَيَشْفِ صُدُورَ قَوْمٖ مُّومِنِينَ وَيُذْهِبْ غَيْظَ قُلُوبِهِمْۖ
And God turns with clemency toward whom He wills.
وَيَتُوبُ اُ۬للَّهُ عَلَىٰ مَنْ يَّشَآءُۖ
And God is All-Knowing, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۖ
Or did you think that you would be left, without God having yet distinguished those among you who have striven and have not taken, besides God, His messenger, and the believers, any close confidant?
اَمْ حَسِبْتُمُۥٓ أَن تُتْرَكُواْ وَلَمَّا يَعْلَمِ اِ۬للَّهُ اُ۬لذِينَ جَٰهَدُواْ مِنكُمْ وَلَمْ يَتَّخِذُواْ مِن دُونِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَلَا رَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا اَ۬لْمُومِنِينَ وَلِيجَةٗۖ
And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.
وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرُۢ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَۖ
It is not for the associators to populate the places of prostration of God, bearing witness against themselves of disowning.
مَا كَانَ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ أَنْ يَّعْمُرُواْ مَسَٰجِدَ اَ۬للَّهِ شَٰهِدِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِم بِالْكُفْرِۖ
Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, and who abide eternally in the Fire.
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتَ اَعْمَٰلُهُمْ وَفِے اِ۬لنّ۪ارِ هُمْ خَٰلِدُونَۖ
Only he populates the places of prostration of God who has believed in God and the Last Day, has maintained the Contact, given pure liberality, and dreaded none but God alone — it may be that those are among those who let themselves be guided.
إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَٰجِدَ اَ۬للَّهِ مَنَ اٰمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ اِ۬لَاخِرِ وَأَقَامَ اَ۬لصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتَى اَ۬لزَّكَوٰةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا اَ۬للَّهَ فَعَس۪ىٰٓ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَنْ يَّكُونُواْ مِنَ اَ۬لْمُهْتَدِينَۖ
Would you make the giving of drink to those performing the Hajj and the populating of the inviolable place of prostration equivalent to one who has believed in God and the Last Day, and has striven in the way of God?
۞ أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ اَ۬لْحَآجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ اَ۬لْمَسْجِدِ اِ۬لْحَرَامِ كَمَنَ اٰمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ اِ۬لَاخِرِ وَجَٰهَدَ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
They are not equal in the sight of God.
لَا يَسْتَوُۥنَ عِندَ اَ۬للَّهِۖ
And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِے اِ۬لْقَوْمَ اَ۬لظَّٰلِمِينَۖ
Those who have believed, emigrated, and striven in the way of God with their goods and their Selves have a more immense degree with God,
اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَهَاجَرُواْ وَجَٰهَدُواْ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمُۥٓ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِندَ اَ۬للَّهِۖ
and those are the triumphant.
وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْفَآئِزُونَۖ
Their Guardian announces to them a benevolence from Himself, a good pleasure, and gardens where they will have lasting bliss, abiding therein eternally, forever;
يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٖ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَٰنٖ وَجَنَّٰتٖ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٞ مُّقِيمٌ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَداًۖ
for with God there is an immense reward.
اِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ عِندَهُۥٓ أَجْرٌ عَظِيمٞۖ
O you who have believed! Do not take your fathers and your brothers as allies, if they love disowning more than faith.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَتَّخِذُوٓاْ ءَابَآءَكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنَكُمُۥٓ أَوْلِيَآءَ ا۪نِ اِ۪سْتَحَبُّواْ اُ۬لْكُفْرَ عَلَى اَ۬لِايمَٰنِۖ
And whoever among you takes them as allies, those are the wrongdoers.
وَمَنْ يَّتَوَلَّهُم مِّنكُمْ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لظَّٰلِمُونَۖ
Say: "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your kinsmen, the goods you have acquired, a trade whose decline you dread, and dwellings with which you are satisfied, are dearer to you than God, His messenger, and striving in His way, then bide your time, until God brings His command."
قُلِ اِن كَانَ ءَابَآؤُكُمْ وَأَبْنَآؤُكُمْ وَإِخْوَٰنُكُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُكُمْ وَعَشِيرَتُكُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلٌ اِ۪قْتَرَفْتُمُوهَا وَتِجَٰرَةٞ تَخْشَوْنَ كَسَادَهَا وَمَسَٰكِنُ تَرْضَوْنَهَآ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكُم مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَجِهَادٖ فِے سَبِيلِهِۦ فَتَرَبَّصُواْ حَتَّىٰ يَاتِيَ اَ۬للَّهُ بِأَمْرِهِۦۖ
And God does not guide the people of the oversteppers.
وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِے اِ۬لْقَوْمَ اَ۬لْفَٰسِقِينَۖ
God indeed helped you in many places, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number dazzled you, but it availed you nothing, and the earth, despite its vastness, became narrow for you; then you turned your backs, fleeing.
لَقَدْ نَصَرَكُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ فِے مَوَاطِنَ كَثِيرَةٖ وَيَوْمَ حُنَيْنٍ اِذَ اَعْجَبَتْكُمْ كَثْرَتُكُمْ فَلَمْ تُغْنِ عَنكُمْ شَئْاٗ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْكُمُ اُ۬لَارْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّيْتُم مُّدْبِرِينَۖ
Then God sent down His tranquility upon His messenger and upon the believers, and sent down armies you did not see, and He punished those who had disowned.
ثُمَّ أَنزَلَ اَ۬للَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ وَعَلَى اَ۬لْمُومِنِينَ وَأَنزَلَ جُنُوداٗ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَا وَعَذَّبَ اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْۖ
And such is the recompense of those who disown.
وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَآءُ اُ۬لْكٰ۪فِرِينَۖ
Then God turns with clemency, after that, toward whom He wills.
ثُمَّ يَتُوبُ اُ۬للَّهُ مِنۢ بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَىٰ مَنْ يَّشَآءُۖ
And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞۖ
O you who have believed! The associators are nothing but impurity: let them not approach the inviolable place of prostration, after this year of theirs.
۞ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا اَ۬لْمُشْرِكُونَ نَجَسٞ فَلَا يَقْرَبُواْ اُ۬لْمَسْجِدَ اَ۬لْحَرَامَ بَعْدَ عَامِهِمْ هَٰذَاۖ
And if you fear indigence, God will enrich you from His favor, if He wills,
وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ عَيْلَةٗ فَسَوْفَ يُغْنِيكُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِن شَآءَۖ
for God is All-Knowing, Wise.
ا۪نَّ اَ۬للَّهَ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٞۖ
Fight those who do not believe in God nor in the Last Day, who do not hold as prohibited what God and His messenger have prohibited, and who do not conform to the Law of truth, among those to whom the Scripture was given — until they pay the war indemnity, by their own hand, being diminished.
قَٰتِلُواْ اُ۬لذِينَ لَا يُومِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَلَا بِالْيَوْمِ اِ۬لَاخِرِ وَلَا يُحَرِّمُونَ مَا حَرَّمَ اَ۬للَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَلَا يَدِينُونَ دِينَ اَ۬لْحَقِّ مِنَ اَ۬لذِينَ أُوتُواْ اُ۬لْكِتَٰبَ حَتَّىٰ يُعْطُواْ اُ۬لْجِزْيَةَ عَنْ يَّدٖ وَهُمْ صَٰغِرُونَۖ
And the Reoriented said: "Al-'Uzayr is the son of God";
وَقَالَتِ اِ۬لْيَهُودُ عُزَيْرُ اُ۪بْنُ اُ۬للَّهِۖ
and the Helpers said: "Al-Massih is the son of God."
وَقَالَتِ اِ۬لنَّصَٰرَى اَ۬لْمَسِيحُ اُ۪بْنُ اُ۬للَّهِۖ
That is their saying with their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who, before them, disowned.
ذَٰلِكَ قَوْلُهُم بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ يُضَٰهُونَ قَوْلَ اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِن قَبْلُۖ
May God combat them!
قَٰتَلَهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُۖ
How then are they turned away?
أَنّ۪ىٰ يُوفَكُونَۖ
They took their scholars of the pen and their reverends as masters besides God, as well as Al-Massih, son of Maryam,
اَ۪تَّخَذُوٓاْ أَحْبَارَهُمْ وَرُهْبَٰنَهُمُۥٓ أَرْبَاباٗ مِّن دُونِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَالْمَسِيحَ اَ۪بْنَ مَرْيَمَۖ
though they had been ordered only to obey one deity.
وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُوٓاْ إِلَٰهاٗ وَٰحِداٗۖ
There is no deity but Him.
لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ
Glory be to Him, above what they associate with Him!
سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَۖ
They want to extinguish God's light with their mouths, but God refuses everything except to complete His light, however much those who disown detest it.
يُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُّطْفِـُٔواْ نُورَ اَ۬للَّهِ بِأَفْوَٰهِهِمْ وَيَابَى اَ۬للَّهُ إِلَّآ أَنْ يُّتِمَّ نُورَهُۥ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ اَ۬لْكَٰفِرُونَۖ
It is He who sent His messenger with the guidance and the Law of truth, so as to make it prevail over every law, however much the associators detest it.
هُوَ اَ۬لذِےٓ أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُۥ بِالْهُد۪ىٰ وَدِينِ اِ۬لْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُۥ عَلَى اَ۬لدِّينِ كُلِّهِۦ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ اَ۬لْمُشْرِكُونَۖ
O you who have believed! Many scholars of the pen and reverends surely devour the goods of men through falsehood, and bar from the way of God.
۞ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِنَّ كَثِيراٗ مِّنَ اَ۬لَاحْب۪ارِ وَالرُّهْبَانِ لَيَاكُلُونَ أَمْوَٰلَ اَ۬لنَّاسِ بِالْبَٰطِلِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
And those who hoard gold and silver, and do not spend it in the way of God — announce to them a painful punishment,
وَالذِينَ يَكْنِزُونَ اَ۬لذَّهَبَ وَالْفِضَّةَ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَهَا فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ اَلِيمٖۖ
on the day when it will be heated in the fire of Jahannam, and their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be seared with it: "This is what you hoarded for yourselves; taste then what you used to hoard!"
يَوْمَ يُحْم۪ىٰ عَلَيْهَا فِے ن۪ارِ جَهَنَّمَ فَتُكْو۪ىٰ بِهَا جِبَاهُهُمْ وَجُنُوبُهُمْ وَظُهُورُهُمْ هَٰذَا مَا كَنَزْتُمْ لِأَنفُسِكُمْ فَذُوقُواْ مَا كُنتُمْ تَكْنِزُونَۖ
The number of months, with God, is indeed twelve months, in God's Code, since the day He created the heavens and the earth;
إِنَّ عِدَّةَ اَ۬لشُّهُورِ عِندَ اَ۬للَّهِ اِ۪ثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْراٗ فِے كِتَٰبِ اِ۬للَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ اَ۬لسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَالَارْضَۖ
four of them are inviolable.
مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٞۖ
That is the upright Law.
ذَٰلِكَ اَ۬لدِّينُ اُ۬لْقَيِّمُۖ
So do not wrong yourselves during these.
فَلَا تَظْلِمُواْ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْۖ
And fight the associators throughout all the months, as they fight you throughout all the months,
وَقَٰتِلُواْ اُ۬لْمُشْرِكِينَ كَآفَّةٗ كَمَا يُقَٰتِلُونَكُمْ كَآفَّةٗۖ
and know that God is with those who guard themselves.
وَاعْلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مَعَ اَ۬لْمُتَّقِينَۖ
The deferred is only an increase in disowning: by it, those who disown lead astray; they make it permitted one year and make it inviolable one year, so as to trample the number of what God has made inviolable, and thus make permitted what God has made inviolable.
إِنَّمَا اَ۬لنَّسِيُّ زِيَادَةٞ فِے اِ۬لْكُفْرِ يَضِلُّ بِهِ اِ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ يُحِلُّونَهُۥ عَاماٗ وَيُحَرِّمُونَهُۥ عَاماٗ لِّيُوَاطِـُٔواْ عِدَّةَ مَا حَرَّمَ اَ۬للَّهُ فَيُحِلُّواْ مَا حَرَّمَ اَ۬للَّهُۖ
The evil of their works has been embellished for them.
زُيِّنَ لَهُمْ سُوٓءُ اَ۬عْمَٰلِهِمْۖ
And God does not guide the people who disown.
وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِے اِ۬لْقَوْمَ اَ۬لْكٰ۪فِرِينَۖ
O you who have believed! What is with you, when it is said to you: "Mobilize in the way of God", that you cling heavily to the earth?
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَا لَكُمُۥٓ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمُ اُ۪نفِرُواْ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ اِ۪ثَّاقَلْتُمُۥٓ إِلَى اَ۬لَارْضِۖ
Are you satisfied with the near life rather than the last life?
أَرَضِيتُم بِالْحَيَوٰةِ اِ۬لدُّنْي۪ا مِنَ اَ۬لَاخِرَةِۖ
The enjoyment of the near life, compared with the last life, is but little.
فَمَا مَتَٰعُ اُ۬لْحَيَوٰةِ اِ۬لدُّنْي۪ا فِے اِ۬لَاخِرَةِ إِلَّا قَلِيلٌۖ
If you do not mobilize, He will punish you with a painful punishment, and replace you with another people, without your harming Him in any way.
اِلَّا تَنفِرُواْ يُعَذِّبْكُمْ عَذَاباً اَلِيماٗ وَيَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْماً غَيْرَكُمْ وَلَا تَضُرُّوهُ شَئْاٗۖ
And God is capable of all things.
وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَےْءٖ قَدِيرٌۖ
If you do not help him, God has already helped him, when those who disowned expelled him, the second of two, when they were both in the cave, when he said to his companion: "Do not grieve, God is indeed with us."
۞ اِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ اُ۬للَّهُ إِذَ اَخْرَجَهُ اُ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ثَانِيَ اَ۪ثْنَيْنِ إِذْ هُمَا فِے اِ۬لْغ۪ارِ إِذْ يَقُولُ لِصَٰحِبِهِۦ لَا تَحْزَنِ اِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مَعَنَاۖ
God then sent down His tranquility upon him,
فَأَنزَلَ اَ۬للَّهُ سَكِينَتَهُۥ عَلَيْهِۖ
and He fortified him with armies you did not see,
وَأَيَّدَهُۥ بِجُنُودٖ لَّمْ تَرَوْهَاۖ
and He made the word of those who had disowned the lowest,
وَجَعَلَ كَلِمَةَ اَ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ اُ۬لسُّفْل۪ىٰۖ
while the word of God is the highest.
وَكَلِمَةُ اُ۬للَّهِ هِيَ اَ۬لْعُلْي۪اۖ
God is All-Powerful, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌۖ
Mobilize, light or heavy, and strive with your goods and your Selves in the way of God.
اِ۪نفِرُواْ خِفَافاٗ وَثِقَالاٗ وَجَٰهِدُواْ بِأَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
That is better for you, if you knew.
ذَٰلِكُمْ خَيْرٞ لَّكُمُۥٓ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَۖ
Had it been a near gain and a moderate journey, they would have followed you; but the distance seemed long to them.
لَوْ كَانَ عَرَضاٗ قَرِيباٗ وَسَفَراٗ قَاصِداٗ لَّاتَّبَعُوكَ وَلَٰكِنۢ بَعُدَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ اُ۬لشُّقَّةُۖ
And they will take oaths by God: "If we had been able, we would have gone out with you";
وَسَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَوِ اِ۪سْتَطَعْنَا لَخَرَجْنَا مَعَكُمْۖ
they annihilate themselves,
يُهْلِكُونَ أَنفُسَهُمْۖ
and God knows that they are surely liars.
وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَٰذِبُونَۖ
God has overlooked it for you: why did you give them permission, before those who spoke truly became clear to you, and before you knew the liars?
عَفَا اَ۬للَّهُ عَنكَ لِمَ أَذِنتَ لَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكَ اَ۬لذِينَ صَدَقُواْ وَتَعْلَمَ اَ۬لْكَٰذِبِينَۖ
Those who believe in God and the Last Day do not ask you for permission when it comes to striving with their goods and their Selves.
لَا يَسْتَٰذِنُكَ اَ۬لذِينَ يُومِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ اِ۬لَاخِرِ أَنْ يُّجَٰهِدُواْ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْۖ
God is All-Knowing of those who guard themselves.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمُۢ بِالْمُتَّقِينَۖ
Only those who do not believe in God nor in the Last Day ask you for permission, whose cores are seized with doubt, so that they waver in their doubt.
إِنَّمَا يَسْتَٰذِنُكَ اَ۬لذِينَ لَا يُومِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ اِ۬لَاخِرِ وَارْتَابَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فَهُمْ فِے رَيْبِهِمْ يَتَرَدَّدُونَۖ
And had they wanted to go out, they would have prepared equipment for it;
۞ وَلَوَ اَرَادُواْ اُ۬لْخُرُوجَ لَأَعَدُّواْ لَهُۥ عُدَّةٗۖ
but God was averse to their being raised up, and He curbed them, and it was said to them: "Remain seated with those who remain seated."
وَلَٰكِن كَرِهَ اَ۬للَّهُ اُ۪نۢبِعَاثَهُمْ فَثَبَّطَهُمْ وَقِيلَ اَ۟قْعُدُواْ مَعَ اَ۬لْقَٰعِدِينَۖ
Had they gone out among you, they would only have increased your confusion, and would have rushed about among you, seeking to put you to the trial — and among you are some who listen to them.
لَوْ خَرَجُواْ فِيكُم مَّا زَادُوكُمُۥٓ إِلَّا خَبَالاٗ وَلَأَوْضَعُواْ خِلَٰلَكُمْ يَبْغُونَكُمُ اُ۬لْفِتْنَةَ وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّٰعُونَ لَهُمْۖ
And God is All-Knowing of the wrongdoers.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمُۢ بِالظَّٰلِمِينَۖ
They had indeed sought the trial before, and had turned matters over for you in every direction, until the truth came and God's command stood uncovered, though they were averse.
لَقَدِ اِ۪بْتَغَوُاْ اُ۬لْفِتْنَةَ مِن قَبْلُ وَقَلَّبُواْ لَكَ اَ۬لُامُورَ حَتَّىٰ جَآءَ اَ۬لْحَقُّ وَظَهَرَ أَمْرُ اُ۬للَّهِ وَهُمْ كَٰرِهُونَۖ
And among them is one who says: "Grant me permission, and do not expose me to the trial."
وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ يَّقُولُ اُ۪يذَن لِّے وَلَا تَفْتِنِّےٓۖ
Is it not into the trial itself that they have already tumbled?
أَلَا فِے اِ۬لْفِتْنَةِ سَقَطُواْۖ
And Jahannam surely encompasses those who disown.
وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيطَةُۢ بِالْكٰ۪فِرِينَۖ
If good betides you, it vexes them,
إِن تُصِبْكَ حَسَنَةٞ تَسُؤْهُمْۖ
and if misfortune strikes you, they say: "We had already taken our precautions before" — and they turn their backs, rejoicing.
وَإِن تُصِبْكَ مُصِيبَةٞ يَقُولُواْ قَدَ اَخَذْنَآ أَمْرَنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَيَتَوَلَّواْ وَّهُمْ فَرِحُونَۖ
Say: "Nothing will strike us except what God has decreed for us;
قُل لَّنْ يُّصِيبَنَآ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اَ۬للَّهُ لَنَاۖ
He is our Ally.
هُوَ مَوْل۪يٰنَاۖ
And it is to God that the believers should entrust themselves."
وَعَلَى اَ۬للَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ اِ۬لْمُومِنُونَۖ
Say: "Do you anticipate for us anything but one of the two most beautiful?
قُلْ هَلْ تَرَبَّصُونَ بِنَآ إِلَّآ إِحْدَى اَ۬لْحُسْنَيَيْنِۖ
And we, we anticipate for you that God strike you with a punishment from Himself, or by our hands.
وَنَحْنُ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُۥٓ أَنْ يُّصِيبَكُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ بِعَذَابٖ مِّنْ عِندِهِۦٓ أَوْ بِأَيْدِينَاۖ
So bide your time,
فَتَرَبَّصُوٓاْۖ
for we are biding our time with you."
إِنَّا مَعَكُم مُّتَرَبِّصُونَۖ
Say: "Spend willingly or reluctantly, it will not be accepted from you,
قُلَ اَنفِقُواْ طَوْعاً اَوْ كَرْهاٗ لَّنْ يُّتَقَبَّلَ مِنكُمُۥٓۖ
for you are a people of oversteppers."
إِنَّكُمْ كُنتُمْ قَوْماٗ فَٰسِقِينَۖ
And nothing prevented their contributions from being accepted, except that they disowned God and His messenger, that they come to the Contact only lazily, and spend only reluctantly.
وَمَا مَنَعَهُمُۥٓ أَن تُقْبَلَ مِنْهُمْ نَفَقَٰتُهُمُۥٓ إِلَّآ أَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُواْ بِاللَّهِ وَبِرَسُولِهِۦ وَلَا يَاتُونَ اَ۬لصَّلَوٰةَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كُسَال۪ىٰ وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ إِلَّا وَهُمْ كَٰرِهُونَۖ
Let neither their goods nor their children dazzle you then.
۞ فَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَٰدُهُمُۥٓۖ
God wants only, through this, to punish them in the near life, and that their Selves depart while they disown.
إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اُ۬للَّهُ لِيُعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِے اِ۬لْحَيَوٰةِ اِ۬لدُّنْي۪ا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَٰفِرُونَۖ
And they take oaths by God that they are surely of you, when they are not of you; but they are a people who keep apart.
وَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُمْ لَمِنكُمْ وَمَا هُم مِّنكُمْ وَلَٰكِنَّهُمْ قَوْمٞ يَفْرَقُونَۖ
If they found a sanctuary, caves, or a hiding place, they would turn to it, bolting.
لَوْ يَجِدُونَ مَلْجَـٔاً اَوْ مَغَٰرَٰتٍ اَوْ مُدَّخَلاٗ لَّوَلَّوِاْ اِلَيْهِ وَهُمْ يَجْمَحُونَۖ
And among them are some who disparage you by insinuation concerning the acts of charity: if they are endowed with some of them, they are satisfied; and if they are not endowed with any of them, at once they are displeased.
وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ يَّلْمِزُكَ فِے اِ۬لصَّدَقَٰتِ فَإِنُ ا۟عْطُواْ مِنْهَا رَضُواْ وَإِن لَّمْ يُعْطَوْاْ مِنْهَآ إِذَا هُمْ يَسْخَطُونَۖ
And had they instead been satisfied with what God and His messenger gave them, and said: "God suffices us; God will grant us of His favor, and His messenger too;
وَلَوَ اَنَّهُمْ رَضُواْ مَآ ءَات۪يٰهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَقَالُواْ حَسْبُنَا اَ۬للَّهُ سَيُوتِينَا اَ۬للَّهُ مِن فَضْلِهِۦ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓۖ
for it is toward God that we turn in yearning."
إِنَّآ إِلَى اَ۬للَّهِ رَٰغِبُونَۖ
The acts of charity are destined only for the poor, the destitute, those who administer them, those whose cores have been united, the pledges, those indebted by an unforeseen expense, in the way of God, and the passing traveler — an obligation from God.
إِنَّمَا اَ۬لصَّدَقَٰتُ لِلْفُقَرَآءِ وَالْمَسَٰكِينِ وَالْعَٰمِلِينَ عَلَيْهَا وَالْمُوَ۬لَّفَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَفِے اِ۬لرِّقَابِ وَالْغَٰرِمِينَ وَفِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَابْنِ اِ۬لسَّبِيلِ فَرِيضَةٗ مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِۖ
And God is All-Knowing, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٞۖ
And among them are those who trouble the Informant and say: "He is all ear."
۞ وَمِنْهُمُ اُ۬لذِينَ يُوذُونَ اَ۬لنَّبِےٓءَ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذْنٞۖ
Say: "An ear of good for you: he believes in God, gives credit to the believers, and is a benevolence for those among you who have believed."
قُلُ ا۟ذْنُ خَيْرٖ لَّكُمْ يُومِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَيُومِنُ لِلْمُومِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٞ لِّلذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مِنكُمْۖ
And those who trouble the messenger of God will have a painful punishment.
وَالذِينَ يُوذُونَ رَسُولَ اَ۬للَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيمٞۖ
They take oaths to you by God, to satisfy you; but God and His messenger are more worthy that they should seek to satisfy Him, if they are believers.
يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمْ لِيُرْضُوكُمْ وَاللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥٓ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يُّرْضُوهُ إِن كَانُواْ مُومِنِينَۖ
Do they not know that whoever sets himself against God and His messenger will have the fire of Jahannam, wherein he will abide eternally?
أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّهُۥ مَنْ يُّحَادِدِ اِ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَأَنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِداٗ فِيهَاۖ
That is the immense disgrace.
ذَٰلِكَ اَ۬لْخِزْيُ اُ۬لْعَظِيمُۖ
The hypocrites are wary lest a surah be sent down concerning them, informing them of what is in their cores.
يَحْذَرُ اُ۬لْمُنَٰفِقُونَ أَن تُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُورَةٞ تُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا فِے قُلُوبِهِمْۖ
Say: "Mock away!
قُلِ اِ۪سْتَهْزِءُوٓاْۖ
God will indeed bring out into the open what you are wary of."
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مُخْرِجٞ مَّا تَحْذَرُونَۖ
And if you question them, they will surely say: "We were only immersing ourselves and playing."
وَلَئِن سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُۖ
Say: "Was it God, His signs, and His messenger that you were mocking?"
قُلَ اَبِاللَّهِ وَءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَرَسُولِهِۦ كُنتُمْ تَسْتَهْزِءُونَۖ
Do not make excuses:
لَا تَعْتَذِرُواْۖ
you have disowned after your faith.
قَدْ كَفَرْتُم بَعْدَ إِيمَٰنِكُمُۥٓۖ
If it is overlooked for one group among you, another group will be punished, for having been severed.
إِنْ يُّعْفَ عَن طَآئِفَةٖ مِّنكُمْ تُعَذَّبْ طَآئِفَةُۢ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُواْ مُجْرِمِينَۖ
The hypocrites, men and women, are of one another: they order what is disavowed and forbid what is recognized, and they close their hands; they forgot God, so He forgot them.
اَ۬لْمُنَٰفِقُونَ وَالْمُنَٰفِقَٰتُ بَعْضُهُم مِّنۢ بَعْضٖ يَامُرُونَ بِالْمُنكَرِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ اِ۬لْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ نَسُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ فَنَسِيَهُمُۥٓۖ
The hypocrites are indeed the oversteppers.
إِنَّ اَ۬لْمُنَٰفِقِينَ هُمُ اُ۬لْفَٰسِقُونَۖ
God has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and those who disown, the fire of Jahannam, wherein they will abide eternally.
وَعَدَ اَ۬للَّهُ اُ۬لْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَالْمُنَٰفِقَٰتِ وَالْكُفَّارَ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَاۖ
That suffices them.
هِيَ حَسْبُهُمْۖ
And God has cursed them,
وَلَعَنَهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُۖ
and they will have a lasting punishment.
وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٞ مُّقِيمٞۖ
Like those who preceded you: they were superior to you in strength, and had more goods and children; they enjoyed their allotment, and you have enjoyed your allotment as those before you enjoyed their allotment, and you have immersed yourselves as they immersed themselves.
كَالذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ كَانُوٓاْ أَشَدَّ مِنكُمْ قُوَّةٗ وَأَكْثَرَ أَمْوَٰلاٗ وَأَوْلَٰداٗ فَاسْتَمْتَعُواْ بِخَلَٰقِهِمْ فَاسْتَمْتَعْتُم بِخَلَٰقِكُمْ كَمَا اَ۪سْتَمْتَعَ اَ۬لذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُم بِخَلَٰقِهِمْ وَخُضْتُمْ كَالذِے خَاضُوٓاْۖ
Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the near life and in the last life;
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ حَبِطَتَ اَعْمَٰلُهُمْ فِے اِ۬لدُّنْي۪ا وَالَاخِرَةِۖ
and those are the losers.
وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْخَٰسِرُونَۖ
Has there not come to them the information concerning those before them: the people of Nuh, the Aad, the Thamud, the people of Ibrahim, the companions of Madyan, and the overturned cities?
۞ أَلَمْ يَاتِهِمْ نَبَأُ اُ۬لذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ قَوْمِ نُوحٖ وَعَادٖ وَثَمُودَ وَقَوْمِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَأَصْحَٰبِ مَدْيَنَ وَالْمُوتَفِكَٰتِۖ
Their messengers had come to them with clear proofs.
أَتَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَٰتِۖ
And God was not going to wrong them;
فَمَا كَانَ اَ۬للَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْۖ
but it was themselves that they wronged.
وَلَٰكِن كَانُوٓاْ أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَۖ
And the believers, men and women, are allies of one another:
وَالْمُومِنُونَ وَالْمُومِنَٰتُ بَعْضُهُمُۥٓ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٖۖ
they order what is recognized and forbid what is disavowed, they maintain the Contact, give pure liberality, and defer to God and His messenger.
يَامُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ اِ۬لْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ اَ۬لصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُوتُونَ اَ۬لزَّكَوٰةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ اَ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓۖ
Those are the ones on whom God will soon have benevolence,
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُۖ
for God is All-Powerful, Wise.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٞۖ
God has promised the believers, men and women, gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, and wholesome dwellings in the Gardens of permanence;
وَعَدَ اَ۬للَّهُ اُ۬لْمُومِنِينَ وَالْمُومِنَٰتِ جَنَّٰتٖ تَجْرِے مِن تَحْتِهَا اَ۬لَانْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَا وَمَسَٰكِنَ طَيِّبَةٗ فِے جَنَّٰتِ عَدْنٖۖ
and a good pleasure from God is greater still.
وَرِضْوَٰنٞ مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ أَكْبَرُۖ
That is the immense triumph.
ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ اَ۬لْفَوْزُ اُ۬لْعَظِيمُۖ
O Informant! Strive against those who disown and the hypocrites, and be firm with them.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لنَّبِےٓءُ جَٰهِدِ اِ۬لْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَٰفِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْۖ
And their resort will be Jahannam,
وَمَأْو۪يٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُۖ
and what an evil destination!
وَبِيسَ اَ۬لْمَصِيرُۖ
They take oaths by God that they said nothing;
يَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ مَا قَالُواْۖ
yet they did indeed say the word of disowning, and they disowned after having been true to God, and they were intent on what did not accrue to them.
وَلَقَدْ قَالُواْ كَلِمَةَ اَ۬لْكُفْرِ وَكَفَرُواْ بَعْدَ إِسْلَٰمِهِمْ وَهَمُّواْ بِمَا لَمْ يَنَالُواْۖ
They have nothing to resent, except that God and His messenger enriched them from His favor.
وَمَا نَقَمُوٓاْ إِلَّآ أَنَ اَغْن۪يٰهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُۥ مِن فَضْلِهِۦۖ
If they turn back, it will be better for them;
فَإِنْ يَّتُوبُواْ يَكُ خَيْراٗ لَّهُمْۖ
but if they turn their backs, God will punish them with a painful punishment, in the near life and in the last life,
وَإِنْ يَّتَوَلَّوْاْ يُعَذِّبْهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ عَذَاباً اَلِيماٗ فِے اِ۬لدُّنْي۪ا وَالَاخِرَةِۖ
and they will have, on earth, neither ally nor help.
وَمَا لَهُمْ فِے اِ۬لَارْضِ مِنْ وَّلِيّٖ وَلَا نَصِيرٖۖ
And among them are some who made a pact with God: "If He gives us of His favor, we will surely give in charity, and we will surely be among those who are sound."
۞ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ عَٰهَدَ اَ۬للَّهَ لَئِنَ اٰت۪يٰنَا مِن فَضْلِهِۦ لَنَصَّدَّقَنَّ وَلَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ اَ۬لصَّٰلِحِينَۖ
But when He gave them of His favor, they became stingy with it and turned their backs, turning away.
فَلَمَّآ ءَات۪يٰهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِۦ بَخِلُواْ بِهِۦ وَتَوَلَّواْ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَۖ
So He made this followed by hypocrisy in their cores, until the day they will meet Him, for having failed God in what they had promised Him, and for having lied.
فَأَعْقَبَهُمْ نِفَاقاٗ فِے قُلُوبِهِمُۥٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يَلْقَوْنَهُۥ بِمَآ أَخْلَفُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ مَا وَعَدُوهُ وَبِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْذِبُونَۖ
Do they not know that God knows their secret and their secret talks, and that God is the great Knower of what escapes the senses?
أَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ يَعْلَمُ سِرَّهُمْ وَنَجْو۪يٰهُمْ وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ عَلَّٰمُ اُ۬لْغُيُوبِۖ
Those who disparage by insinuation the believers who give in charity willingly, and scoff at those who have only their effort to give — God scoffs at them,
اِ۬لذِينَ يَلْمِزُونَ اَ۬لْمُطَّوِّعِينَ مِنَ اَ۬لْمُومِنِينَ فِے اِ۬لصَّدَقَٰتِ وَالذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ إِلَّا جُهْدَهُمْ فَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنْهُمْ سَخِرَ اَ۬للَّهُ مِنْهُمْۖ
and they will have a painful punishment.
وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيمٌۖ
Whether you ask forgiveness for them or not —
اِ۪سْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمُۥٓ أَوْ لَا تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمُۥٓۖ
even if you asked forgiveness for them seventy times, God will never forgive them.
إِن تَسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ سَبْعِينَ مَرَّةٗ فَلَنْ يَّغْفِرَ اَ۬للَّهُ لَهُمْۖ
That is because they disowned God and His messenger.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَفَرُواْ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۖ
And God does not guide the people of the oversteppers.
وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِے اِ۬لْقَوْمَ اَ۬لْفَٰسِقِينَۖ
Those who were left behind rejoiced in sitting back, apart from the messenger of God, and were averse to striving with their goods and their Selves in the way of God, and said: "Do not mobilize in the heat."
فَرِحَ اَ۬لْمُخَلَّفُونَ بِمَقْعَدِهِمْ خِلَٰفَ رَسُولِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَكَرِهُوٓاْ أَنْ يُّجَٰهِدُواْ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَقَالُواْ لَا تَنفِرُواْ فِے اِ۬لْحَرِّۖ
Say: "The fire of Jahannam is even more intense in heat" — if only they understood!
قُلْ نَارُ جَهَنَّمَ أَشَدُّ حَرّاٗ لَّوْ كَانُواْ يَفْقَهُونَۖ
Let them laugh little, then, and weep much, as a recompense for what they used to earn.
فَلْيَضْحَكُواْ قَلِيلاٗ وَلْيَبْكُواْ كَثِيراٗ جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْسِبُونَۖ
If God returns you to a group of them, and they ask you permission to go out, say then: "You will never go out with me, and you will not fight any enemy with me,
فَإِن رَّجَعَكَ اَ۬للَّهُ إِلَىٰ طَآئِفَةٖ مِّنْهُمْ فَاسْتَٰذَنُوكَ لِلْخُرُوجِ فَقُل لَّن تَخْرُجُواْ مَعِيَ أَبَداٗ وَلَن تُقَٰتِلُواْ مَعِے عَدُوّاًۖ
for you were satisfied with remaining seated the first time;
اِنَّكُمْ رَضِيتُم بِالْقُعُودِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٖۖ
so remain seated with those who stay behind."
فَاقْعُدُواْ مَعَ اَ۬لْخَٰلِفِينَۖ
And never be in contact with any of them who dies, and do not maintain yourself for his burial,
وَلَا تُصَلِّ عَلَىٰٓ أَحَدٖ مِّنْهُم مَّاتَ أَبَداٗ وَلَا تَقُمْ عَلَىٰ قَبْرِهِۦٓۖ
for they disowned God and His messenger, and died as oversteppers.
إِنَّهُمْ كَفَرُواْ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ وَمَاتُواْ وَهُمْ فَٰسِقُونَۖ
And let not their goods and their children dazzle you.
۞ وَلَا تُعْجِبْكَ أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ وَأَوْلَٰدُهُمُۥٓۖ
God wants only, through this, to punish them in the near life, and that their Selves depart while they disown.
إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اُ۬للَّهُ أَنْ يُّعَذِّبَهُم بِهَا فِے اِ۬لدُّنْي۪ا وَتَزْهَقَ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَهُمْ كَٰفِرُونَۖ
And when a surah is sent down: "Believe in God, and strive with His messenger", those among them who have the means ask you permission, and say: "Let us be with those who remain seated."
وَإِذَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ اَنَ اٰمِنُواْ بِاللَّهِ وَجَٰهِدُواْ مَعَ رَسُولِهِ اِ۪سْتَٰذَنَكَ أُوْلُواْ اُ۬لطَّوْلِ مِنْهُمْ وَقَالُواْ ذَرْنَا نَكُن مَّعَ اَ۬لْقَٰعِدِينَۖ
They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind,
رَضُواْ بِأَنْ يَّكُونُواْ مَعَ اَ۬لْخَوَالِفِۖ
and their cores have been stamped, so that they do not understand.
وَطُبِعَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَفْقَهُونَۖ
But the messenger, and those who believed with him, strove with their goods and their Selves,
لَٰكِنِ اِ۬لرَّسُولُ وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ مَعَهُۥ جَٰهَدُواْ بِأَمْوَٰلِهِمْ وَأَنفُسِهِمْۖ
and those are the ones to whom belongs the good,
وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمُ اُ۬لْخَيْرَٰتُۖ
and those are the ones who succeed.
وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لْمُفْلِحُونَۖ
God has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally.
أَعَدَّ اَ۬للَّهُ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٖ تَجْرِے مِن تَحْتِهَا اَ۬لَانْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَاۖ
That is the immense triumph.
ذَٰلِكَ اَ۬لْفَوْزُ اُ۬لْعَظِيمُۖ
And the excuse-makers, among the notables, came so that permission might be granted them, while those who lied to God and His messenger remained seated.
وَجَآءَ اَ۬لْمُعَذِّرُونَ مِنَ اَ۬لَاعْرَابِ لِيُوذَنَ لَهُمْ وَقَعَدَ اَ۬لذِينَ كَذَبُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ
A painful punishment will strike those among them who disowned.
سَيُصِيبُ اُ۬لذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنْهُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيمٞۖ
There is no discomfort for the weak, nor for the sick, nor for those who find nothing to spend, so long as they are sincere toward God and His messenger.
لَّيْسَ عَلَى اَ۬لضُّعَفَآءِ وَلَا عَلَى اَ۬لْمَرْض۪ىٰ وَلَا عَلَى اَ۬لذِينَ لَا يَجِدُونَ مَا يُنفِقُونَ حَرَجٌ اِذَا نَصَحُواْ لِلهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦۖ
No way against those who do good.
مَا عَلَى اَ۬لْمُحْسِنِينَ مِن سَبِيلٖۖ
And God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞۖ
Nor against those who, having come to you so that you might transport them, and to whom you said: "I find nothing on which to transport you",
وَلَا عَلَى اَ۬لذِينَ إِذَا مَآ أَتَوْكَ لِتَحْمِلَهُمْ قُلْتَ لَآ أَجِدُ مَآ أَحْمِلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِۖ
and who went away, their eyes overflowing with tears, grieved that they could not find anything to spend.
تَوَلَّواْ وَّأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ اَ۬لدَّمْعِ حَزَناً اَلَّا يَجِدُواْ مَا يُنفِقُونَۖ
The way is open only against those who ask you permission while they are rich.
۞ إِنَّمَا اَ۬لسَّبِيلُ عَلَى اَ۬لذِينَ يَسْتَٰذِنُونَكَ وَهُمُۥٓ أَغْنِيَآءُۖ
They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind,
رَضُواْ بِأَنْ يَّكُونُواْ مَعَ اَ۬لْخَوَالِفِۖ
and God has stamped their cores, so that they do not know.
وَطَبَعَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَۖ
They will make excuses to you, when you have returned to them.
يَعْتَذِرُونَ إِلَيْكُمُۥٓ إِذَا رَجَعْتُمُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْۖ
Say: "Do not make excuses, we will not give you credit.
قُل لَّا تَعْتَذِرُواْ لَن نُّومِنَ لَكُمْۖ
God has already informed us of your news.
قَدْ نَبَّأَنَا اَ۬للَّهُ مِنَ اَخْب۪ارِكُمْۖ
And God will see your deed, and so will His messenger,
وَسَيَرَى اَ۬للَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۖۥ
then you will be brought back to the Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
ثُمَّ تُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَٰلِمِ اِ۬لْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَۖ
They will take oaths to you by God, once you have turned back to them, so that you may turn away from them.
سَيَحْلِفُونَ بِاللَّهِ لَكُمُۥٓ إِذَا اَ۪نقَلَبْتُمُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْ لِتُعْرِضُواْ عَنْهُمْۖ
So turn away from them,
فَأَعْرِضُواْ عَنْهُمُۥٓۖ
for they are filth,
إِنَّهُمْ رِجْسٞۖ
and their resort will be Jahannam,
وَمَأْو۪يٰهُمْ جَهَنَّمُۖ
as a recompense for what they used to earn.
جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكْسِبُونَۖ
They take oaths to you, so that you may be satisfied with them; but even if you were satisfied with them, God would indeed not be satisfied with the people of the oversteppers.
يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْاْ عَنْهُمْ فَإِن تَرْضَوْاْ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ لَا يَرْض۪ىٰ عَنِ اِ۬لْقَوْمِ اِ۬لْفَٰسِقِينَۖ
The notables are even more intense in disowning and hypocrisy, and they all the more deserve not to know the limits of what God has sent down upon His messenger.
اَ۬لَاعْرَابُ أَشَدُّ كُفْراٗ وَنِفَاقاٗ وَأَجْدَرُ أَلَّا يَعْلَمُواْ حُدُودَ مَآ أَنزَلَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦۖ
And God is All-Knowing, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٞۖ
And among the notables are some who take what they spend as a forced levy, and anticipate setbacks of fate for you.
وَمِنَ اَ۬لَاعْرَابِ مَنْ يَّتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ مَغْرَماٗ وَيَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمُ اُ۬لدَّوَآئِرَۖ
Upon them, the cycle of evil.
عَلَيْهِمْ دَآئِرَةُ اُ۬لسَّوْءِۖ
God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٞۖ
And among the notables are some who believe in God and the Last Day, and who take what they spend as a means of drawing near to God and the contacts of the messenger.
وَمِنَ اُ۬لَاعْرَابِ مَنْ يُّومِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ اِ۬لَاخِرِ وَيَتَّخِذُ مَا يُنفِقُ قُرُبَٰتٍ عِندَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَصَلَوَٰتِ اِ۬لرَّسُولِۖ
Is it not so: it is indeed, for them, a drawing-near.
أَلَآ إِنَّهَا قُرُبَةٞ لَّهُمْۖ
God will admit them into His benevolence,
سَيُدْخِلُهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ فِے رَحْمَتِهِۦٓۖ
for God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞۖ
And the very first forerunners, among the emigrants and the Auxiliaries, and those who followed them in excellence — God is satisfied with them, and they are satisfied with Him;
وَالسَّٰبِقُونَ اَ۬لَاوَّلُونَ مِنَ اَ۬لْمُهَٰجِرِينَ وَالَانص۪ارِ وَالذِينَ اَ۪تَّبَعُوهُم بِإِحْسَٰنٖ رَّضِيَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُواْ عَنْهُۖ
He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, forever.
وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّٰتٖ تَجْرِے تَحْتَهَا اَ۬لَانْهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَداٗۖ
That is the immense triumph.
ذَٰلِكَ اَ۬لْفَوْزُ اُ۬لْعَظِيمُۖ
And among the notables around you, there are hypocrites,
۞ وَمِمَّنْ حَوْلَكُم مِّنَ اَ۬لَاعْرَابِ مُنَٰفِقُونَۖ
as well as, among those of them who dwell in the Capital, people hardened in hypocrisy whom you do not know:
وَمِنَ اَهْلِ اِ۬لْمَدِينَةِ مَرَدُواْ عَلَى اَ۬لنِّفَاقِ لَا تَعْلَمُهُمْۖ
We, We know them.
نَحْنُ نَعْلَمُهُمْۖ
We will punish them twice, then they will be brought back to an immense punishment.
سَنُعَذِّبُهُم مَّرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَذَابٍ عَظِيمٖۖ
And others have acknowledged their offenses, having mixed a sound deed with another that was evil; it may be that God will turn toward them with clemency,
وَءَاخَرُونَ اَ۪عْتَرَفُواْ بِذُنُوبِهِمْ خَلَطُواْ عَمَلاٗ صَٰلِحاٗ وَءَاخَرَ سَيِّئاً عَسَى اَ۬للَّهُ أَنْ يَّتُوبَ عَلَيْهِمُۥٓۖ
for God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٌۖ
Take from their goods an act of charity that purifies them and makes them grow, and be in contact with them,
خُذْ مِنَ اَمْوَٰلِهِمْ صَدَقَةٗ تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِم بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمُۥٓۖ
for your contacts are a comfort for them.
إِنَّ صَلَوَٰتِكَ سَكَنٞ لَّهُمْۖ
God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌۖ
Do they not know that God, He, accepts the repentance of His obedient ones and takes the acts of charity, and that God, He, is the One who ever turns back, Benevolent?
اَلَمْ يَعْلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ هُوَ يَقْبَلُ اُ۬لتَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَاخُذُ اُ۬لصَّدَقَٰتِ وَأَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ هُوَ اَ۬لتَّوَّابُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُۖ
And say: "Act; God will see your deed, and so will His messenger and the believers,
وَقُلِ اِ۪عْمَلُواْ فَسَيَرَى اَ۬للَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَالْمُومِنُونَۖ
and you will be brought back to the Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
وَسَتُرَدُّونَ إِلَىٰ عَٰلِمِ اِ۬لْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَٰدَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَۖ
And others are left pending God's command: either He will punish them, or He will turn toward them with clemency.
وَءَاخَرُونَ مُرْجَوْنَ لِأَمْرِ اِ۬للَّهِ إِمَّا يُعَذِّبُهُمْ وَإِمَّا يَتُوبُ عَلَيْهِمْۖ
And God is All-Knowing, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۖ
And those who took a place of prostration to harm, for disowning, for division among the believers, and as a lookout post for one who, previously, had made war on God and His messenger —
اِ۬لذِينَ اَ۪تَّخَذُواْ مَسْجِداٗ ضِرَاراٗ وَكُفْراٗ وَتَفْرِيقاَۢ بَيْنَ اَ۬لْمُومِنِينَ وَإِرْصَاداٗ لِّمَنْ حَارَبَ اَ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ مِن قَبْلُۖ
they will surely take oaths: "We wanted only the best";
وَلَيَحْلِفُنَّ إِنَ اَرَدْنَآ إِلَّا اَ۬لْحُسْن۪ىٰۖ
and God testifies that they are surely liars.
وَاللَّهُ يَشْهَدُ إِنَّهُمْ لَكَٰذِبُونَۖ
Never maintain yourself therein.
لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَداٗۖ
A place of prostration founded upon guardedness, from the very first day, is far more worthy that you should maintain yourself therein.
لَّمَسْجِدٌ ا۟سِّسَ عَلَى اَ۬لتَّقْو۪ىٰ مِنَ اَوَّلِ يَوْمٍ اَحَقُّ أَن تَقُومَ فِيهِۖ
In it are men who love to purify themselves.
فِيهِ رِجَالٞ يُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يَّتَطَهَّرُواْۖ
God loves those who purify themselves.
وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ اُ۬لْمُطَّهِّرِينَۖ
Is, then, one whose structure has been founded upon guardedness toward God and His good pleasure better, or one whose structure has been founded on the edge of a ravine about to cave in, which then caves in with him into the fire of Jahannam?
أَفَمَنُ ا۟سِّسَ بُنْيَٰنُهُۥ عَلَىٰ تَقْو۪ىٰ مِنَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَرِضْوَٰنٍ خَيْرٌ اَم مَّنُ ا۟سِّسَ بُنْيَٰنُهُۥ عَلَىٰ شَفَا جُرُفٍ ه۪ارٖ فَانْهَارَ بِهِۦ فِے ن۪ارِ جَهَنَّمَۖ
And God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
وَاللَّهُ لَا يَهْدِے اِ۬لْقَوْمَ اَ۬لظَّٰلِمِينَۖ
The structure they built does not cease to be a doubt in their cores, unless their cores break into pieces.
لَا يَزَالُ بُنْيَٰنُهُمُ اُ۬لذِے بَنَوْاْ رِيبَةٗ فِے قُلُوبِهِمُۥٓ إِلَّآ أَن تُقَطَّعَ قُلُوبُهُمْۖ
And God is All-Knowing, Wise.
وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌۖ
God has indeed bought from the believers their Selves and their goods, in exchange for the Garden that belongs to them.
۞ اِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ اَ۪شْتَر۪ىٰ مِنَ اَ۬لْمُومِنِينَ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَأَمْوَٰلَهُم بِأَنَّ لَهُمُ اُ۬لْجَنَّةَۖ
They fight in the way of God, kill and are killed — it is a promise incumbent upon Him, in truth, in the Tawrah, the Injil, and this Recitation.
يُقَٰتِلُونَ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ فَيَقْتُلُونَ وَيُقْتَلُونَ وَعْداً عَلَيْهِ حَقّاٗ فِے اِ۬لتَّوْر۪يٰةِ وَالِانجِيلِ وَالْقُرْءَانِۖ
And who is more faithful to his pact than God?
وَمَنَ اَوْف۪ىٰ بِعَهْدِهِۦ مِنَ اَ۬للَّهِۖ
So exult in the sale you have made with Him,
فَاسْتَبْشِرُواْ بِبَيْعِكُمُ اُ۬لذِے بَايَعْتُم بِهِۦۖ
and that is the immense triumph.
وَذَٰلِكَ هُوَ اَ۬لْفَوْزُ اُ۬لْعَظِيمُۖ
Those who turn back, who obey, who praise, who move about freely, who kneel, who prostrate, who order what is recognized and forbid what is disavowed, and who preserve the limits of God —
اُ۬لتَّٰٓئِبُونَ اَ۬لْعَٰبِدُونَ اَ۬لْحَٰمِدُونَ اَ۬لسَّٰٓئِحُونَ اَ۬لرَّٰكِعُونَ اَ۬لسَّٰجِدُونَ اَ۬لَامِرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّاهُونَ عَنِ اِ۬لْمُنكَرِ وَالْحَٰفِظُونَ لِحُدُودِ اِ۬للَّهِۖ
and give good news to the believers.
وَبَشِّرِ اِ۬لْمُومِنِينَۖ
It was not for the Informant, nor for those who believed, to ask forgiveness for the associators, even if they were close relatives, once it had become clear to them that they were the companions of the Blaze.
مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِےٓءِ وَالذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَنْ يَّسْتَغْفِرُواْ لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوٓاْ أُوْلِے قُرْب۪ىٰ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُۥٓ أَنَّهُمُۥٓ أَصْحَٰبُ اُ۬لْجَحِيمِۖ
And Ibrahim asked forgiveness for his father only because of a promise he had made him;
وَمَا كَانَ اَ۪سْتِغْفَارُ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ إِلَّا عَن مَّوْعِدَةٖ وَعَدَهَآ إِيَّاهُۖ
but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of God, he declared himself quit of him.
فَلَمَّا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُۥٓ أَنَّهُۥ عَدُوّٞ لِّلهِ تَبَرَّأَ مِنْهُۖ
Ibrahim was surely full of sighs, forbearing.
إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَأَوَّٰهٌ حَلِيمٞۖ
It was not for God to lead a people astray after having guided them, without first having made clear to them what they must guard themselves against,
وَمَا كَانَ اَ۬للَّهُ لِيُضِلَّ قَوْماَۢ بَعْدَ إِذْ هَد۪يٰهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُبَيِّنَ لَهُم مَّا يَتَّقُونَۖ
for God is All-Knowing of all things.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَےْءٍ عَلِيمٌۖ
To God indeed belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth;
اِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ لَهُۥ مُلْكُ اُ۬لسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَالَارْضِۖ
He gives life and causes death.
يُحْيِۦ وَيُمِيتُۖ
And you have, besides God, neither ally nor help.
وَمَا لَكُم مِّن دُونِ اِ۬للَّهِ مِنْ وَّلِيّٖ وَلَا نَصِيرٖۖ
God has indeed turned with clemency toward the Informant, the emigrants, and the Auxiliaries, who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the cores of a fraction among them had almost deviated; then He turned toward them with clemency — He is, toward them, full of kindness, Benevolent — and toward the three who had been left behind,
۞ لَّقَد تَّابَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَلَى اَ۬لنَّبِےٓءِ وَالْمُهَٰجِرِينَ وَالَانص۪ارِ اِ۬لذِينَ اَ۪تَّبَعُوهُ فِے سَاعَةِ اِ۬لْعُسْرَةِ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا كَادَ تَزِيغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِيقٖ مِّنْهُمْ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمُۥٓۖ إِنَّهُۥ بِهِمْ رَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٞ وَعَلَى اَ۬لثَّلَٰثَةِ اِ۬لذِينَ خُلِّفُواْۖ
until, when the earth had become narrow for them despite its vastness, and their very Selves had become narrow for them, and they presumed that there is no sanctuary from God except toward Him — then He turned toward them with clemency, so that they might turn back,
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ اُ۬لَارْضُ بِمَا رَحُبَتْ وَضَاقَتْ عَلَيْهِمُۥٓ أَنفُسُهُمْ وَظَنُّوٓاْ أَن لَّا مَلْجَأَ مِنَ اَ۬للَّهِ إِلَّآ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ لِيَتُوبُوٓاْۖ
for God, He, is the One who ever turns back, Benevolent.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ هُوَ اَ۬لتَّوَّابُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُۖ
O you who have believed! Guard yourselves toward God, and be with the veracious.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ اُ۪تَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَكُونُواْ مَعَ اَ۬لصَّٰدِقِينَۖ
It was not for the notables, those of the Capital and those around it, to stay behind, apart from the messenger of God, nor to prefer their own Selves to his.
مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ اِ۬لْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ اَ۬لَاعْرَابِ أَنْ يَّتَخَلَّفُواْ عَن رَّسُولِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَلَا يَرْغَبُواْ بِأَنفُسِهِمْ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦۖ
That is because no thirst, no fatigue, no dearth strikes them in the way of God, no step they tread irritates those who disown, and no gain from an enemy accrues to them, without a sound deed being inscribed for them because of it;
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ لَا يُصِيبُهُمْ ظَمَأٞ وَلَا نَصَبٞ وَلَا مَخْمَصَةٞ فِے سَبِيلِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَلَا يَطَـُٔونَ مَوْطِئاٗ يَغِيظُ اُ۬لْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوّٖ نَّيْلاً اِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُم بِهِۦ عَمَلٞ صَٰلِحٌۖ
for God does not let the reward of those who do good dissipate.
اِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ اَ۬لْمُحْسِنِينَۖ
And they do not spend any expenditure, small or great, nor do they cut off traffic in any valley, without it being inscribed for them,
وَلَا يُنفِقُونَ نَفَقَةٗ صَغِيرَةٗ وَلَا كَبِيرَةٗ وَلَا يَقْطَعُونَ وَادِياً اِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمْۖ
so that God may recompense them according to the most beautiful of what they used to do.
لِيَجْزِيَهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ أَحْسَنَ مَا كَانُواْ يَعْمَلُونَۖ
It was not for the believers to mobilize all together.
وَمَا كَانَ اَ۬لْمُومِنُونَ لِيَنفِرُواْ كَآفَّةٗۖ
Why did not a group mobilize from every fraction among them, so that they might gain deep understanding in the Law, and warn their people upon their return to them, perhaps they will be wary?
فَلَوْلَا نَفَرَ مِن كُلِّ فِرْقَةٖ مِّنْهُمْ طَآئِفَةٞ لِّيَتَفَقَّهُواْ فِے اِ۬لدِّينِ وَلِيُنذِرُواْ قَوْمَهُمُۥٓ إِذَا رَجَعُوٓاْ إِلَيْهِمْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَحْذَرُونَۖ
O you who have believed! Fight those among the disowners who are in contact with you, and let them find in you firmness.
۞ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ قَٰتِلُواْ اُ۬لذِينَ يَلُونَكُم مِّنَ اَ۬لْكُفّ۪ارِ وَلْيَجِدُواْ فِيكُمْ غِلْظَةٗۖ
And know that God is with those who guard themselves.
وَاعْلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ مَعَ اَ۬لْمُتَّقِينَۖ
And when a surah is sent down, there is among them one who says: "Which of you has this surah increased in faith?"
وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٞ فَمِنْهُم مَّنْ يَّقُولُ أَيُّكُمْ زَادَتْهُ هَٰذِهِۦٓ إِيمَٰناٗۖ
As for those who have believed, it has increased them in faith, and they exult at it.
فَأَمَّا اَ۬لذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ فَزَادَتْهُمُۥٓ إِيمَٰناٗ وَهُمْ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَۖ
But as for those in whose cores is a sickness, it has added filth to their filth, and they died disowning.
وَأَمَّا اَ۬لذِينَ فِے قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ فَزَادَتْهُمْ رِجْساً اِلَىٰ رِجْسِهِمْ وَمَاتُواْ وَهُمْ كَٰفِرُونَۖ
Do they not see that they are tried every year, once or twice? Yet they do not turn back, and they do not remember.
أَوَلَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ فِے كُلِّ عَامٖ مَّرَّةً اَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لَا يَتُوبُونَ وَلَا هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَۖ
And when a surah is sent down, they look at one another: "Does anyone see you?" Then they slip away.
وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٞ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمُۥٓ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَر۪يٰكُم مِّنَ اَحَدٖ ثُمَّ اَ۪نصَرَفُواْۖ
God has turned away their cores, for they are a people who do not understand.
صَرَفَ اَ۬للَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٞ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَۖ
A messenger has indeed come to you, from among yourselves; it is grievous to him that you should be overwhelmed,
لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٞ مِّنَ اَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْۖ
solicitous for you,
حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُمۖ
full of kindness, benevolent toward the believers.
بِالْمُومِنِينَ رَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٞۖ
If they turn their backs, say then: "God suffices me;
فَإِن تَوَلَّوْاْ فَقُلْ حَسْبِيَ اَ۬للَّهُۖ
there is no deity but Him;
لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ
to Him I entrust myself,
عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُۖ
and He is the Guardian of the immense Edifice."
وَهُوَ رَبُّ اُ۬لْعَرْشِ اِ۬لْعَظِيمِۖ
