The strongholds held nothing back ظنّوا أنّ حصونهم مانعتهم
Summary and links in the frieze
In the frieze God expelled those who trusted their strongholds; he must consider what he has prepared for tomorrow.
Read just before, 60 leads here: Those who expelled you from your abodes; the next sura opens: it is God who expelled from their abodes those who disowned. 60
It leads to 58: The Diverter tells the human being to disown, then declares himself quit; the next sura names his party: they are the losers. 58

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. All that is in the heavens and on the earth has glorified God.
بِسۡمِ اِ۬للَّهِ اِ۬لرَّحۡمَٰنِ اِ۬لرَّحِيمِ سَبَّحَ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي اِ۬لسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي اِ۬لۡأَرۡضِۖ
And He is the All-Powerful, the Wise.
وَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لۡحَكِيمُ
It is He who expelled from their abodes those who, among the People of the Scripture, disowned, in the first gathering.
هُوَ اَ۬لَّذِي أَخۡرَجَ اَ۬لَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ اِ۬لۡكِتَٰبِ مِن دِيٰ۪رِهِمۡ لِأَوَّلِ اِ۬لۡحَشۡرِۚ
You did not presume they would leave.
مَا ظَنَنتُمۡ أَن يَخۡرُجُواْۖ
And they presumed their strongholds would insulate them from God.
وَظَنُّواْ أَنَّهُم مَّانِعَتُهُمۡ حُصُونُهُم مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ
But God came upon them from where they did not expect.
فَأَتَىٰهُمُ اُ۬للَّهُ مِنۡ حَيۡثُ لَمۡ يَحۡتَسِبُواْۖ
And He hurled terror into their cores.
وَقَذَف فِّي قُلُوبِهِمِ اِ۬لرُّعۡبَۚ
They dismantled their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers.
يُخَرِّبُونَ بُيُوتَهُم بِأَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَأَيۡدِي اِ۬لۡمُومِنِينَ
So take heed, O possessors of sight.
فَاَعۡتَبِرُواْ يَٰأُوْلِي اِ۬لۡأَبۡصٰ۪رِ
And had God not prescribed exile for them, He would have punished them in the near life.
وَلَوۡلَا أَن كَتَبَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَلَيۡهِمِ اِ۬لۡجَلَآءَ لَعَذَّبَهُمۡ فِي اِ۬لدُّنۡيۭاۖ
And theirs, in the last life, is the punishment of the Fire.
وَلَهُمۡ فِي اِ۬لۡأٓخِرَةِ عَذَابُ اُ۬لنّ۪ارِ
That is because they set themselves in breach against God and His messenger.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ شَآقُّواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۖ
And whoever sets himself in breach against God — God is indeed severe in sanction.
وَمَن يُشَآقِّ اِ۬للَّهَ فَإِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ شَدِيدُ اُ۬لۡعِقَابِ
Whatever act of kindness you interrupted, or left standing on its foundations, it is with God's permission, and so as to disgrace the oversteppers.
مَا قَطَعۡتُم مِّن لِّينَةٍ أَوۡ تَرَكۡتُمُوهَا قَآئِمَةً عَلَىٰ أُصُولِهَا فَبِإِذۡنِ اِ۬للَّهِ وَلِيُخۡزِيَ اَ۬لۡفَٰسِقِينَ
And whatever God restored to His messenger from them, you spurred neither horse nor mount for it.
وَمَا أَفَآءَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ مِنۡهُمۡ فَمَا أَوۡجَفۡتُمۡ عَلَيۡهِ مِنۡ خَيۡلٖ وَلَا رِكَابٖ
But God gives His messengers power over whom He wills.
وَلَٰكِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ يُسَلِّطُ رُسُلَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَن يَشَآءُۚ
And God is capable of all things.
وَاَللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ
Whatever God restored to His messenger from the people of the cities belongs to God and the messenger, to relatives, orphans, the destitute, and the passing traveler, so that it does not rotate among the wealthy among you.
۞ مَّا أَفَآءَ اَ۬للَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِۦ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ اِ۬لۡقُر۪يٰ فَلِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ وَلِذِي اِ۬لۡقُرۡبۭيٰ وَاَلۡيَتَٰمَىٰ وَاَلۡمَسَٰكِينِ وَاَبۡنِ اِ۬لسَّبِيلِ كَيۡ لَا يَكُونَ دُولَةَۢ بَيۡنَ اَ۬لۡأَغۡنِيَآءِ مِنكُمۡۚ
And whatever the messenger gives you, take it.
وَمَا ءَاتَىٰكُمُ اُ۬لرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ
And whatever he forbids you, abstain from it.
وَمَا نَهَىٰكُمۡ عَنۡهُ فَاَنتَهُواْۚ
And guard yourselves toward God, for God is severe in sanction.
وَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَۖ إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ شَدِيدُ اُ۬لۡعِقَابِ
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their abodes and goods, seeking favor from God and His pleasure, and who help God and His messenger.
لِلۡفُقَرَآءِ اِ۬لۡمُهَٰجِرِينَ اَ۬لَّذِينَ أُخۡرِجُواْ مِن دِيٰ۪رِهِمۡ وَأَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ يَبۡتَغُونَ فَضۡلٗا مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِ وَرِضۡوَٰنٗا وَيَنصُرُونَ اَ۬للَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥۚ
Those are the veracious.
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لصَّٰدِقُونَ
And those who had settled in the abode and in faith before them love those who have emigrated to them, and find in their chests no need for what they were given, and prefer them over themselves, even if they themselves suffer privation.
وَاَلَّذِينَ تَبَوَّءُو اُ۬لدَّارَ وَاَلۡإِيمَٰنَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ يُحِبُّونَ مَنۡ هَاجَرَ إِلَيۡهِمۡ وَلَا يَجِدُونَ فِي صُدُورِهِمۡ حَاجَةٗ مِّمَّا أُوتُواْ وَيُوثِرُونَ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمۡ وَلَوۡ كَانَ بِهِمۡ خَصَاصَةٞۚ
And whoever is protected from the greed of his Self — those are the ones who succeed.
وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفۡسِهِۦ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لۡمُفۡلِحُونَ
And those who came after them say: "Our Guardian, forgive us and our brothers who went ahead of us in faith, and put no rancor in our cores toward those who believe,
وَاَلَّذِينَ جَآءُو مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا اَ۪غۡفِر لَّنَا وَلِإِخۡوَٰنِنَا اَ۬لَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالۡإِيمَٰنِ وَلَا تَجۡعَلۡ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلّٗا لِّلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ
for, our Guardian, You are full of kindness, Benevolent."
رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَؤُفٞ رَّحِيمٌ
Have you not seen those who practiced hypocrisy saying to their brothers who, among the People of the Scripture, disowned: "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will never defer to anyone against you; and if you are fought, we will surely help you."
۞ أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى اَ۬لَّذِين نَّافَقُواْ يَقُولُونَ لِإِخۡوَٰنِهِمِ اِ۬لَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ اِ۬لۡكِتَٰبِ لَئِنۡ أُخۡرِجۡتُمۡ لَنَخۡرُجَنَّ مَعَكُمۡ وَلَا نُطِيعُ فِيكُمۡ أَحَدًا أَبَدٗا وَإِن قُوتِلۡتُمۡ لَنَنصُرَنَّكُمۡ
And God testifies that they are surely liars.
وَاَللَّهُ يَشۡهَدُ إِنَّهُمۡ لَكَٰذِبُونَ
If they are expelled, they will not leave with them.
لَئِنۡ أُخۡرِجُواْ لَا يَخۡرُجُونَ مَعَهُمۡ
And if they are fought, they will not help them.
وَلَئِن قُوتِلُواْ لَا يَنصُرُونَهُمۡ
And even if they helped them, they would surely turn their backs, then not be helped.
وَلَئِن نَّصَرُوهُمۡ لَيُوَلُّنَّ اَ۬لۡأَدۡبَٰرَ ثُمَّ لَا يُنصَرُونَ
You inspire, in their chests, more reverence than God.
لَأَاْنتُمۡ أَشَدُّ رَهۡبَةٗ فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنَ اَ۬للَّهِۚ
That is because they are a people who do not understand.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٞ لَّا يَفۡقَهُونَ
They will not fight you all together except in fortified cities, or from behind walls.
لَا يُقَٰتِلُونَكُمۡ جَمِيعًا إِلَّا فِي قُرٗى مُّحَصَّنَةٍ أَوۡ مِن وَرَآءِ جِدٰ۪رِۢۚ
Their violence among themselves is formidable.
بَاسُهُم بَيۡنَهُمۡ شَدِيدٞۚ
You think them united, while their cores are divided.
تَحۡسِبُهُمۡ جَمِيعٗا وَقُلُوبُهُمۡ شَتّۭيٰۚ
That is because they are a people who do not reason.
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَوۡمٞ لَّا يَعۡقِلُونَ
They are like those shortly before them,
كَمَثَلِ اِ۬لَّذِينَ مِن قَبۡلِهِمۡ قَرِيبٗاۖ
who tasted the baleful consequences of their conduct.
ذَاقُواْ وَبَالَ أَمۡرِهِمۡ
And they will have a painful punishment.
وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ
They are like the Diverter when he says to the human being: "Disown!" Then when he has disowned, he says: "I am indeed quit of you, I fear God, the Guardian of all beings."
كَمَثَلِ اِ۬لشَّيۡطَٰنِ إِذۡ قَال لِّلۡإِنسَٰنِ اِ۟كۡفُرۡ فَلَمَّا كَفَرَ قَالَ إِنِّي بَرِيٓءٞ مِّنكَ إِنِّيَ أَخَافُ اُ۬للَّهَ رَبَّ اَ۬لۡعَٰلَمِينَ
And the end of both was that they were in the Fire, abiding there eternally.
فَكَانَ عَٰقِبَتَهُمَا أَنَّهُمَا فِي اِ۬لنّ۪ارِ خَٰلِدَيۡنِ فِيهَاۚ
And that is the recompense of the wrongdoers.
وَذَٰلِكَ جَزَٰٓؤُاْ اُ۬لظَّٰلِمِينَ
O you who have believed! Guard yourselves toward God, and let every Self consider what it has prepared for tomorrow.
يَٰأَيُّهَا اَ۬لَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ اُ۪تَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ وَلۡتَنظُرۡ نَفۡسٞ مَّا قَدَّمَتۡ لِغَدٖۖ
And guard yourselves toward God,
وَاَتَّقُواْ اُ۬للَّهَۚ
for God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.
إِنَّ اَ۬للَّهَ خَبِيرُۢ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ
And do not be like those who forgot God, so He made them forget themselves.
وَلَا تَكُونُواْ كَاَلَّذِين نَّسُواْ اُ۬للَّهَ فَأَنسَىٰهُمۡ أَنفُسَهُمۡۚ
Those are the oversteppers.
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ اُ۬لۡفَٰسِقُونَ
The companions of the Fire and the companions of the Garden are not equal.
لَا يَسۡتَوِي أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لنّ۪ارِ وَأَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡجَنَّةِۚ
The companions of the Garden are the triumphant.
أَصۡحَٰبُ اُ۬لۡجَنَّةِ هُمُ اُ۬لۡفَآئِزُونَ
Had We sent down this Recitation upon a mountain, you would have seen it become humble and split apart out of dread of God.
۞ لَوۡ أَنزَلۡنَا هَٰذَا اَ۬لۡقُرۡءَانَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٖ لَّرَأَيۡتَهُۥ خَٰشِعٗا مُّتَصَدِّعٗا مِّنۡ خَشۡيَةِ اِ۬للَّهِۚ
And these are the examples We multiply for mankind, perhaps they will reflect.
وَتِلۡكَ اَ۬لۡأَمۡثَٰلُ نَضۡرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
He is God, there is no deity but Him.
هُوَ اَ۬للَّهُ اُ۬لَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ
The Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed.
عَٰلِمُ اُ۬لۡغَيۡبِ وَاَلشَّهَٰدَةِۖ
He is the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
هُوَ اَ۬لرَّحۡمَٰنُ اُ۬لرَّحِيمُ
He is God, there is no deity but Him, the Sovereign, the Most Holy, the Peace, the Guarantor, the Prevailing, the All-Powerful, the Overpowering, the Supremely Great.
هُوَ اَ۬للَّهُ اُ۬لَّذِي لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ اَ۬لۡمَلِكُ اُ۬لۡقُدُّوسُ اُ۬لسَّلَٰمُ اُ۬لۡمُومِنُ اُ۬لۡمُهَيۡمِنُ اُ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لۡجَبَّارُ اُ۬لۡمُتَكَبِّرُۚ
Glory be to God, above what they associate with Him.
سُبۡحَٰنَ اَ۬للَّهِ عَمَّا يُشۡرِكُونَ
He is God, the Creator, the Giver of existence, the Giver of form.
هُوَ اَ۬للَّهُ اُ۬لۡخَٰلِقُ اُ۬لۡبَارِئُ اُ۬لۡمُصَوِّرۖ
To Him belong the most beautiful attributes.
لَّهُ اُ۬لۡأَسۡمَآءُ اُ۬لۡحُسۡنۭيٰۚ
All that is in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him.
يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ مَا فِي اِ۬لسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَاَلۡأَرۡضِۖ
And He is the All-Powerful, the Wise.
وَهۡوَ اَ۬لۡعَزِيزُ اُ۬لۡحَكِيمُ
