Stand Straight
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم الرA Scripture whose signs have been made firm, then made explicit, from a Wise, Informed One: "Obey none but God; I am for you, from Him, a warner and a bearer of good tidings; ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will let you enjoy a fine enjoyment until an appointed term, and grant every possessor of favor his favor.
كتب احكمت ايته ثم فصلت من لدن حكيم خبير الا تعبدوا الا الله انني لكم منه نذير وبشير وان استغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا اليه يمتعكم متعا حسنا الي اجل مسمي ويوت كل ذي فضل فضلهBut if you turn away, I fear for you the punishment of an immense day."
وان تولوا فاني اخاف عليكم عذاب يوم كبيرTo God is your return,
الي الله مرجعكمand He is capable of all things.
وهو علي كل شي قديرIs it not that they fold their chests to hide from Him?
الا انهم يثنون صدورهم ليستخفوا منهIs it not that, when they cover themselves with their garments, He knows what they keep secret and what they disclose?
الا حين يستغشون ثيابهم يعلم ما يسرون وما يعلنونHe is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
انه عليم بذات الصدورThere is no living creature on earth whose provision does not fall to God; He knows its abode and its repository:
وما من دابه في الارض الا علي الله رزقها ويعلم مستقرها ومستودعهاeverything is in a clear register.
كل في كتب مبينAnd it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His Edifice was founded upon the water [as primary matter], so as to test you: which of you acts best.
وهو الذي خلق السموت والارض في سته ايام وكان عرشه علي الما ليبلوكم ايكم احسن عملاAnd if you say: "You will be resurrected after death," those who disown will surely say: "This is nothing but a manifest illusion."
ولين قلت انكم مبعوثون من بعد الموت ليقولن الذين كفروا ان هذا الا سحر مبينAnd if We delay for them the punishment until a counted term, they will surely say: "What holds it back?"
ولين اخرنا عنهم العذاب الي امه معدوده ليقولن ما يحبسهIs it not that, the day it comes to them, it will not be turned away from them,
الا يوم ياتيهم ليس مصروفا عنهمand what they used to mock will envelop them.
وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزونAnd if We let the human being taste a benevolence from Us, then withdraw it from him, he becomes surely hopeless, a great disowner.
ولين اذقنا الانسن منا رحمه ثم نزعنها منه انه ليوس كفورAnd if We let him taste a blessing after adversity has touched him, he will surely say: "The bad deeds have departed from me":
ولين اذقنه نعما بعد ضرا مسته ليقولن ذهب السيات عنيhe becomes joyful, full of vanity.
انه لفرح فخورExcept those who were patient and did righteous deeds: those will have forgiveness and a great reward.
الا الذين صبروا وعملوا الصلحت اوليك لهم مغفره واجر كبيرIt may be that you will leave out part of what is revealed to you, and that your chest will tighten because of it, since they say: "Why has a treasure not been sent down upon him, or why does an Agent not come with him!"
فلعلك تارك بعض ما يوحي اليك وضايق به صدرك ان يقولوا لولا انزل عليه كنز او جا معه ملكYou are, yourself, only a warner;
انما انت نذيرand God is, over everything, a trustee.
والله علي كل شي وكيلOr will they say: "He has invented it"?
ام يقولون افتريهSay: "Then bring ten invented sûrahs resembling it, and call upon whomever you can, besides God, if you are truthful."
قل فاتوا بعشر سور مثله مفتريت وادعوا من استطعتم من دون الله ان كنتم صدقينIf they do not answer you, then know that it has been sent down only with God's knowledge, and that there is no deity but Him.
فالم يستجيبوا لكم فاعلموا انما انزل بعلم الله وان لا اله الا هوWill you then be true to God alone?
فهل انتم مسلمونWhoever wants the present life and its adornment, We pay him in full for his deeds therein, and he will not be shortchanged in it:
من كان يريد الحيوه الدنيا وزينتها نوف اليهم اعملهم فيها وهم فيها لا يبخسونthose are the ones who will have, in the last life, nothing but the Fire;
اوليك الذين ليس لهم في الاخره الا النارwhat they fabricated therein will have collapsed,
وحبط ما صنعوا فيهاand vain will be what they were doing.
وبطل ما كانوا يعملونIs he who relies on a clear proof from his Guardian, followed by a witness from Him, [like those others]?
افمن كان علي بينه من ربه ويتلوه شاهد منهAnd before him, the Scripture of Moussa, as a reference and a benevolence.
ومن قبله كتب موسي اماما ورحمهThose are the ones who believe in it.
اوليك يومنون بهAnd whoever, among the parties, disowns it, the Fire is his appointment:
ومن يكفر به من الاحزاب فالنار موعدهSo do not be in doubt about it:
فلا تك في مريه منهit is indeed the truth from your Guardian, but most people do not believe.
انه الحق من ربك ولكن اكثر الناس لا يومنونAnd who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against God?
ومن اظلم ممن افتري علي الله كذباThose are the ones who will be presented before their Guardian, and the witnesses will say: "These are the ones who lied against their Guardian!"
اوليك يعرضون علي ربهم ويقول الاشهد هولا الذين كذبوا علي ربهمIs it not that God's curse falls upon the wrongdoers, those who turn [others] away from God's path and seek to make it crooked, and who disown the last life?
الا لعنه الله علي الظلمين الذين يصدون عن سبيل الله ويبغونها عوجا وهم بالاخره هم كفرونThose are the ones who, on earth, will not be able to render [Him] powerless, and who will have, besides God, no ally:
اوليك لم يكونوا معجزين في الارض وما كان لهم من دون الله من اولياthe punishment will be doubled for them.
يضعف لهم العذابThey could neither hear, nor see.
ما كانوا يستطيعون السمع وما كانوا يبصرونThose are the ones who have lost themselves, and what they invented has strayed away from them.
اوليك الذين خسروا انفسهم وضل عنهم ما كانوا يفترونThere is no doubt that, in the last life, they are the greatest losers.
لا جرم انهم في الاخره هم الاخسرونThose who have believed, done righteous deeds, and found peace before their Guardian: those are the companions of the Garden,
ان الذين امنوا وعملوا الصلحت واخبتوا الي ربهم اوليك اصحب الجنهwherein they will abide eternally.
هم فيها خلدونThe example of the two groups is like the blind and the deaf, and the seeing and the hearing:
مثل الفريقين كالاعمي والاصم والبصير والسميعare they equal in example?
هل يستويان مثلاWill you not then remember?
افلا تذكرونWe have indeed sent Nuh to his people:
ولقد ارسلنا نوحا الي قومه"I am indeed for you a clear warner:
اني لكم نذير مبينobey none but God;
ان لا تعبدوا الا اللهI fear for you the punishment of a painful day."
اني اخاف عليكم عذاب يوم اليمThe court of those who disowned, among his people, said: "We see you only as a human like us, and we see that only those who are, among us, the most abject, followed you, at first glance.
فقال الملا الذين كفروا من قومه ما نريك الا بشرا مثلنا وما نريك اتبعك الا الذين هم اراذلنا بادي الرايAnd we see in you no favor over us; we rather think you liars."
وما نري لكم علينا من فضل بل نظنكم كذبينHe said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has granted me a benevolence from Him, and it has become obscured for you, shall we impose it upon you while you detest it?
قال يقوم اريتم ان كنت علي بينه من ربي واتيني رحمه من عنده فعميت عليكم انلزمكموها وانتم لها كرهونO my people, I do not ask you for any goods for this:
ويقوم لا اسلكم عليه مالاmy reward is incumbent only upon God.
ان اجري الا علي اللهAnd I am not of those who drive away those who believe: they will indeed meet their Guardian;
وما انا بطارد الذين امنوا انهم ملقوا ربهمbut I see you a people given to ignorance.
ولكني اريكم قوما تجهلونO my people, who would help me against God, if I drove them away?
ويقوم من ينصرني من الله ان طردتهمWill you not then remember?
افلا تذكرونAnd I do not tell you that I hold God's treasures, nor that I know what escapes the senses, nor that I am an Agent;
ولا اقول لكم عندي خزاين الله ولا اعلم الغيب ولا اقول اني ملكand I do not say, of those your eyes hold in contempt, that God will grant them no good:
ولا اقول للذين تزدري اعينكم لن يوتيهم الله خيراGod knows best what is in their Selves.
الله اعلم بما في انفسهمI would then be among the wrongdoers."
اني اذا لمن الظلمينThey said: "O Nuh, you have indeed argued with us, and multiplied the argument; bring us then what you threaten us with, if you are among the truthful."
قالوا ينوح قد جدلتنا فاكثرت جدلنا فاتنا بما تعدنا ان كنت من الصدقينHe said: "It is God alone who will bring it to you, if He wills, and you will not be able to render [Him] powerless.
قال انما ياتيكم به الله ان شا وما انتم بمعجزينAnd my counsel will be of no use to you, even were I to wish to counsel you, if God wills to mislead you:
ولا ينفعكم نصحي ان اردت ان انصح لكم ان كان الله يريد ان يغويكمHe is your Guardian,
هو ربكمand to Him you will be returned."
واليه ترجعونOr will they say: "He has invented it"?
ام يقولون افتريهSay: "If I have invented it, then my own severance falls upon me, and I am clear of your severance."
قل ان افتريته فعلي اجرامي وانا بري مما تجرمونAnd it was revealed to Nuh that none of your people will believe anymore, except those who have already believed:
واوحي الي نوح انه لن يومن من قومك الا من قد امنso do not grieve over what they were doing.
فلا تبتيس بما كانوا يفعلونAnd build the vessel, under Our eyes and by Our revelation,
واصنع الفلك باعيننا ووحيناand do not speak to Me about those who have been unjust: they will indeed be drowned.
ولا تخطبني في الذين ظلموا انهم مغرقونHe was building the vessel; and every time a court of his people passed by him, it mocked him.
ويصنع الفلك وكلما مر عليه ملا من قومه سخروا منهHe said: "If you mock us, we will mock you as you mock."
قال ان تسخروا منا فانا نسخر منكم كما تسخرونYou will soon know upon whom a punishment will fall that disgraces him, and upon whom a lasting punishment will settle.
فسوف تعلمون من ياتيه عذاب يخزيه ويحل عليه عذاب مقيمUntil, when Our command came and the oven began to boil over, We said: "Load into it, of every kind, two elements of a pair, and your family, except him against whom the word has already been pronounced, and those who have believed."
حتي اذا جا امرنا وفار التنور قلنا احمل فيها من كل زوجين اثنين واهلك الا من سبق عليه القول ومن امنAnd only a few had believed with him.
وما امن معه الا قليلAnd he said: "Embark therein: in the name of God be its course and its mooring.
وقال اركبوا فيها بسم الله مجريها ومرسيهاMy Guardian is surely Most-Forgiving, Benevolent."
ان ربي لغفور رحيمAnd it sailed with them amid waves like mountains.
وهي تجري بهم في موج كالجبالAnd Nuh called his son, who stood apart: "O my little one, embark with us, and do not be with those who disown."
ونادي نوح ابنه وكان في معزل يبني اركب معنا ولا تكن مع الكفرينHe said: "I shall take refuge on a mountain, which will preserve me from the water."
قال ساوي الي جبل يعصمني من الماHe said: "There is no preserver today from God's command, except for him to whom He shows benevolence."
قال لا عاصم اليوم من امر الله الا من رحمAnd the wave came between them, and he was among the drowned.
وحال بينهما الموج فكان من المغرقينAnd it was said: "O earth, swallow your water! O sky, hold back!"
وقيل يارض ابلعي ماك ويسما اقلعيAnd the water subsided, the command was fulfilled, and [the vessel] settled on al-Judi.
وغيض الما وقضي الامر واستوت علي الجوديAnd it was said: "Far removed be the wrongdoing people!"
وقيل بعدا للقوم الظلمينAnd Nuh called upon his Guardian and said: "My Guardian, my son is of my family, and Your promise is truth,
ونادي نوح ربه فقال رب ان ابني من اهلي وان وعدك الحقand You are the most just of judges."
وانت احكم الحكمينHe said: "O Nuh, he is not of your family:
قال ينوح انه ليس من اهلكit is indeed an unrighteous deed.
انه عمل غير صلحSo do not ask Me about what you have no knowledge of:
فلا تسلن ما ليس لك به علمI exhort you not to be among the ignorant."
اني اعظك ان تكون من الجهلينHe said: "My Guardian, I take refuge with You from asking You about what I have no knowledge of,
قال رب اني اعوذ بك ان اسلك ما ليس لي به علمand if You do not forgive me and show me benevolence, I will be among the losers."
والا تغفر لي وترحمني اكن من الخسرينIt was said: "O Nuh, descend with a peace from Us, and blessings upon you and upon communities from those who are with you;
قيل ينوح اهبط بسلم منا وبركت عليك وعلي امم ممن معكand there are communities that We shall let enjoy [life], then a painful punishment from Us will touch them."
وامم سنمتعهم ثم يمسهم منا عذاب اليمThose are pieces of information about what escapes the senses, which We reveal to you:
تلك من انبا الغيب نوحيها اليكyou did not know them, neither you nor your people, before this.
ما كنت تعلمها انت ولا قومك من قبل هذاSo be patient:
فاصبرthe [favorable] outcome belongs to those who guard themselves.
ان العقبه للمتقينAnd to the Recidivists [Aad], their brother Hud:
والي عاد اخاهم هوداhe said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him;
قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيرهyou are only inventors [of falsehood]."
ان انتم الا مفترونO my people, I do not ask you for any reward for this:
يقوم لا اسلكم عليه اجراmy reward is incumbent only upon Him who originated me.
ان اجري الا علي الذي فطرنيWill you not then reason?
افلا تعقلونO my people, ask forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him: He will send upon you the sky abundantly, and add strength to your strength; and do not turn away as severed."
ويقوم استغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا اليه يرسل السما عليكم مدرارا ويزدكم قوه الي قوتكم ولا تتولوا مجرمينThey said: "O Hud, you have not brought us a clear proof, and we will not abandon our deities on your word, and we do not give you credit.
قالوا يهود ما جيتنا ببينه وما نحن بتاركي الهتنا عن قولك وما نحن لك بمومنينWe only say that one of our deities has struck you with evil."
ان نقول الا اعتريك بعض الهتنا بسوHe said: "I call God to witness,
قال اني اشهد اللهAnd bear witness that I am clear of what you associate besides Him:
واشهدوا اني بري مما تشركون من دونهso scheme against me all together, and give me no respite.
فكيدوني جميعا ثم لا تنظرونI rely upon God, my Guardian and yours:
اني توكلت علي الله ربي وربكمthere is no living creature that He does not hold by the forelock.
ما من دابه الا هو اخذ بناصيتهاMy Guardian is indeed upon a straight path.
ان ربي علي صرط مستقيمIf you turn away, I have conveyed to you that with which I was sent to you;
فان تولوا فقد ابلغتكم ما ارسلت به اليكمand my Guardian will substitute in your place another people, without your harming Him in anything:
ويستخلف ربي قوما غيركم ولا تضرونه شياmy Guardian watches over everything."
ان ربي علي كل شي حفيظAnd when Our command came, We saved Hud and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and We saved them from a harsh punishment.
ولما جا امرنا نجينا هودا والذين امنوا معه برحمه منا ونجينهم من عذاب غليظAnd such were the Recidivists [Aad]: they stubbornly rejected the signs of their Guardian, disobeyed His messengers, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant.
وتلك عاد جحدوا بايت ربهم وعصوا رسله واتبعوا امر كل جبار عنيدAnd they were pursued, in the present life, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:
واتبعوا في هذه الدنيا لعنه ويوم القيمهIs it not that the Recidivists [Aad] disowned their Guardian?
الا ان عادا كفروا ربهمFar removed be the Recidivists [Aad], the people of Hud!
الا بعدا لعاد قوم هودAnd to the Depleters [Thamud], their brother Salih:
والي ثمود اخاهم صلحاhe said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him.
قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيرهIt is He who brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein to dwell long: so ask His forgiveness, then turn back to Him:
هو انشاكم من الارض واستعمركم فيها فاستغفروه ثم توبوا اليهmy Guardian is near, responsive."
ان ربي قريب مجيبThey said: "O Salih, you were among us a hope before this; do you forbid us to obey what our ancestors obeyed? We are indeed in a troubling doubt about what you call us to."
قالوا يصلح قد كنت فينا مرجوا قبل هذا اتنهينا ان نعبد ما يعبد اباونا واننا لفي شك مما تدعونا اليه مريبHe said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has granted me, from Him, a benevolence, who then would help me against God if I disobeyed Him?
قال يقوم اريتم ان كنت علي بينه من ربي واتيني منه رحمه فمن ينصرني من الله ان عصيتهYou would then only increase my loss.
فما تزيدونني غير تخسيرO my people, this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you:
ويقوم هذه ناقه الله لكم ايهso let her eat on God's earth,
فذروها تاكل في ارض اللهand do her no harm, or a near punishment will seize you."
ولا تمسوها بسو فياخذكم عذاب قريبBut they hamstrung her. He then said: "Enjoy yourselves in your dwelling for three days:
فعقروها فقال تمتعوا في داركم ثلثه ايامthat is a promise that will not be belied."
ذلك وعد غير مكذوبWhen Our command came, We saved Salih and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us, and from the disgrace of that day.
فلما جا امرنا نجينا صلحا والذين امنوا معه برحمه منا ومن خزي يوميذYour Guardian is indeed the Strong, the All-Powerful.
ان ربك هو القوي العزيزAnd the Cry seized those who had been unjust, so that they became, in their dwellings, prostrate, as if they had never dwelt there.
واخذ الذين ظلموا الصيحه فاصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين كان لم يغنوا فيهاIs it not that the Depleters [Thamud] disowned their Guardian?
الا ان ثمودا كفروا ربهمFar removed be the Depleters [Thamud]!
الا بعدا لثمودAnd Our messengers indeed came to Ibrahim with the glad tidings: they said: "Peace!"
ولقد جات رسلنا ابرهيم بالبشري قالوا سلماHe said: "Peace!"
قال سلمand he did not delay in bringing a roasted calf.
فما لبث ان جا بعجل حنيذBut when he saw that their hands did not reach it, he found them strange and felt fear of them.
فلما را ايديهم لا تصل اليه نكرهم واوجس منهم خيفهThey said: "Do not fear:
قالوا لا تخفwe are indeed sent to the people of Lut."
انا ارسلنا الي قوم لوطAnd his wife, standing, began to laugh;
وامراته قايمه فضحكتWe then gave her the glad tidings of Ishaq,
فبشرنها باسحقand, after Ishaq, Yaacoub.
ومن ورا اسحق يعقوبShe said: "Woe is me! Shall I bear a child, when I am old, and here is my husband, an old man?
قالت يويلتي الد وانا عجوز وهذا بعلي شيخاThat is surely an astonishing thing!"
ان هذا لشي عجيبThey said: "Do you marvel at God's command?
قالوا اتعجبين من امر اللهGod's benevolence and His blessings be upon you, people of the house!
رحمت الله وبركته عليكم اهل البيتHe is indeed praiseworthy, full of glory."
انه حميد مجيدWhen the fright had left Ibrahim and the glad tidings had come to him, he began to argue with Us about the people of Lut:
فلما ذهب عن ابرهيم الروع وجاته البشري يجدلنا في قوم لوطIbrahim is surely thoughtful, full of [repentant] sighs, ever turning back [to God].
ان ابرهيم لحليم اوه منيب"O Ibrahim, turn away from this:
يابرهيم اعرض عن هذاthe command of your Guardian has already come,
انه قد جا امر ربكand an irrevocable punishment indeed comes to them."
وانهم اتيهم عذاب غير مردودAnd when Our messengers came to Lut, he was distressed by it, and felt helpless about them, and said: "This is a hard day."
ولما جات رسلنا لوطا سي بهم وضاق بهم ذرعا وقال هذا يوم عصيبAnd his people came to him, rushing, though they had previously been committing evil deeds.
وجاه قومه يهرعون اليه ومن قبل كانوا يعملون السياتHe said: "O my people, here are my daughters: they are purer for you; so guard yourselves toward God, and do not disgrace me concerning my guests:
قال يقوم هولا بناتي هن اطهر لكم فاتقوا الله ولا تخزون في ضيفيis there not among you a reasonable man?"
اليس منكم رجل رشيدThey said: "You already know what right we have over your daughters, and you well know, [right now], what we want."
قالوا لقد علمت ما لنا في بناتك من حق وانك لتعلم ما نريدHe said: "Would that I had some strength against you, or could take refuge in a strong support!"
قال لو ان لي بكم قوه او اوي الي ركن شديدThey said: "O Lut, we are the messengers of your Guardian: they will never reach you.
قالوا يلوط انا رسل ربك لن يصلوا اليكSo depart with your family, at a time of the night, and let none of you turn around, except your wife.
فاسر باهلك بقطع من اليل ولا يلتفت منكم احد الا امراتكWhat befalls them will also befall her.
انه مصيبها ما اصابهمTheir appointment is the morning:
ان موعدهم الصبحis the morning not near?"
اليس الصبح بقريبWhen Our command came, We made the top [of their city] its bottom, and rained upon it stones of hardened clay, layered, marked with your Guardian:
فلما جا امرنا جعلنا عليها سافلها وامطرنا عليها حجاره من سجيل منضود مسومه عند ربكand it is not far from the wrongdoers.
وما هي من الظلمين ببعيدAnd to Madyan, their brother Shu'ayb:
والي مدين اخاهم شعيباhe said: "O my people, obey God: you have no other deity than Him,
قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيرهand do not diminish the measure nor the weight.
ولا تنقصوا المكيال والميزانI see you in prosperity, and I fear for you the punishment of an encompassing day.
اني اريكم بخير واني اخاف عليكم عذاب يوم محيطO my people, give full measure and full weight, with equity,
ويقوم اوفوا المكيال والميزان بالقسطand do not shortchange people in their things, and do not spread disorder on the earth as corrupters.
ولا تبخسوا الناس اشياهم ولا تعثوا في الارض مفسدينWhat remains [licitly] with God is better for you, if you are believers;
بقيت الله خير لكم ان كنتم مومنينand I am not, over you, a guardian.
وما انا عليكم بحفيظThey said: "O Shu'ayb, does your Contact command you that we abandon what our ancestors obeyed, or that we stop doing with our goods what we wish?
قالوا يشعيب اصلوتك تامرك ان نترك ما يعبد اباونا او ان نفعل في امولنا ما نشواYou are surely, yourself, the thoughtful, the reasonable one!"
انك لانت الحليم الرشيدHe said: "O my people, do you see? If I rely on a clear proof from my Guardian, and He has provided me, from Him, with a fine provision...
قال يقوم اريتم ان كنت علي بينه من ربي ورزقني منه رزقا حسناAnd I do not want to contradict you by doing myself what I turn you away from:
وما اريد ان اخالفكم الي ما انهيكم عنهI only want reform, as much as I can;
ان اريد الا الاصلح ما استطعتand my success rests only with God:
وما توفيقي الا باللهupon Him I rely,
عليه توكلتand to Him I return.
واليه انيبO my people, let not your rupture with me draw upon you what befell the people of Nuh, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih;
ويقوم لا يجرمنكم شقاقي ان يصيبكم مثل ما اصاب قوم نوح او قوم هود او قوم صلحand the people of Lut are not far from you.
وما قوم لوط منكم ببعيدAsk forgiveness of your Guardian, then turn back to Him:
واستغفروا ربكم ثم توبوا اليهmy Guardian is Benevolent, full of affection.
ان ربي رحيم ودودThey said: "O Shu'ayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and we indeed see you weak among us; were it not for your clan, we would have banished you; and you have no power over us."
قالوا يشعيب ما نفقه كثيرا مما تقول وانا لنريك فينا ضعيفا ولولا رهطك لرجمنك وما انت علينا بعزيزHe said: "O my people, does my clan then weigh more with you than God, whom you have relegated behind your back?
قال يقوم ارهطي اعز عليكم من الله واتخذتموه وراكم ظهرياMy Guardian indeed encompasses what you do.
ان ربي بما تعملون محيطO my people, act according to your position; I, [too], act:
ويقوم اعملوا علي مكانتكم اني عملyou will soon know upon whom a punishment falls that covers him with disgrace, and who is a liar.
سوف تعلمون من ياتيه عذاب يخزيه ومن هو كذبSo watch:
وارتقبواI watch with you."
اني معكم رقيبAnd when Our command came, We saved Shu'ayb and those who had believed with him, by a benevolence from Us.
ولما جا امرنا نجينا شعيبا والذين امنوا معه برحمه مناAnd the Cry seized those who had been unjust, so that they became, in their dwellings, prostrate, as if they had never dwelt there.
واخذت الذين ظلموا الصيحه فاصبحوا في ديرهم جثمين كان لم يغنوا فيهاFar removed be Madyan, as the Depleters [Thamud] were removed!
الا بعدا لمدين كما بعدت ثمودWe have indeed sent Moussa with Our signs and manifest authority, to Fir'awn and his court; but they followed the command of Fir'awn,
ولقد ارسلنا موسي بايتنا وسلطن مبين الي فرعون وملايه فاتبعوا امر فرعونand the command of Fir'awn was not reasonable.
وما امر فرعون برشيدHe will precede his people on the Day of Appearance, and bring them to arrive at the Fire:
يقدم قومه يوم القيمه فاوردهم النارwhat a detestable place of arrival to arrive at!
وبيس الورد المورودAnd they were pursued, here, by a curse, and on the Day of Appearance too:
واتبعوا في هذه لعنه ويوم القيمهwhat a detestable gift is that which was given to them!
بيس الرفد المرفودThose are pieces of information about the cities which We relate to you: some of them remain standing, and others are mown down.
ذلك من انبا القري نقصه عليك منها قايم وحصيدAnd We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves:
وما ظلمنهم ولكن ظلموا انفسهمtheir deities, which they invoked besides God, availed them nothing when your Guardian's command came,
فما اغنت عنهم الهتهم التي يدعون من دون الله من شي لما جا امر ربكand they only increased their ruin.
وما زادوهم غير تتبيبSuch is the seizure of your Guardian, when He seizes the cities while they are unjust:
وكذلك اخذ ربك اذا اخذ القري وهي ظلمهHis seizure is indeed painful, severe.
ان اخذه اليم شديدThere is surely in that a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the last life:
ان في ذلك لايه لمن خاف عذاب الاخرهthat is a day on which the people will be gathered,
ذلك يوم مجموع له الناسand that is a witnessed day.
وذلك يوم مشهودAnd We defer it only until a counted term.
وما نوخره الا لاجل معدودThe day it comes, no Self will speak without His permission:
يوم يات لا تكلم نفس الا باذنهthere will then be the wretched and the happy.
فمنهم شقي وسعيدAs for those who will be wretched, they will be in the Fire, wherein they will have moaning and sobbing, wherein they will abide eternally, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:
فاما الذين شقوا ففي النار لهم فيها زفير وشهيق خلدين فيها ما دامت السموت والارض الا ما شا ربكyour Guardian is indeed ever doing what He wills.
ان ربك فعال لما يريدAnd as for those who will be happy, they will be in the Garden, wherein they will abide eternally, as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Guardian wills:
واما الذين سعدوا ففي الجنه خلدين فيها ما دامت السموت والارض الا ما شا ربكa gift that will never be cut off.
عطا غير مجذوذSo do not be in doubt about what those people obey:
فلا تك في مريه مما يعبد هولاthey obey only as their ancestors obeyed before.
ما يعبدون الا كما يعبد اباوهم من قبلAnd We shall surely give them their share, without any deduction.
وانا لموفوهم نصيبهم غير منقوصWe have indeed given Moussa the Scripture, and there was divergence about it;
ولقد اتينا موسي الكتب فاختلف فيهand had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian, it would have been decided between them;
ولولا كلمه سبقت من ربك لقضي بينهمand they are surely, about it, in a troubling doubt.
وانهم لفي شك منه مريبAnd to each, your Guardian will surely pay in full for their deeds:
وان كلا لما ليوفينهم ربك اعملهمHe is indeed Informed of what they do.
انه بما يعملون خبيرSo stand straight, as you have been commanded, and those who have turned back [to God] with you, and do not exceed the measure:
فاستقم كما امرت ومن تاب معك ولا تطغواHe indeed sees perfectly what you do.
انه بما تعملون بصيرAnd do not lean upon those who have been unjust, or the Fire would touch you,
ولا تركنوا الي الذين ظلموا فتمسكم النارand you would have, besides God, no ally,
وما لكم من دون الله من اولياthen you would not be helped.
ثم لا تنصرونAnd maintain the Contact at the two ends of the day, and at close moments of the night:
واقم الصلوه طرفي النهار وزلفا من اليلgood deeds indeed dispel bad ones:
ان الحسنت يذهبن السياتthat is a reminder for those who remember.
ذلك ذكري للذكرينAnd be patient:
واصبرGod does not let go to waste the reward of those who do good.
فان الله لا يضيع اجر المحسنينWere there not, among the generations before you, possessors of a remnant [of virtue] who forbade corruption on earth, except a few among those We saved?
فلولا كان من القرون من قبلكم اولوا بقيه ينهون عن الفساد في الارض الا قليلا ممن انجينا منهمAnd those who were unjust followed what they were indulged in, and became severed.
واتبع الذين ظلموا ما اترفوا فيه وكانوا مجرمينAnd your Guardian was not one to annihilate the cities unjustly, while their inhabitants were reforming.
وما كان ربك ليهلك القري بظلم واهلها مصلحونAnd had your Guardian willed, He would have made the people a single community;
ولو شا ربك لجعل الناس امه وحدهbut they do not cease to differ, except those to whom your Guardian shows benevolence,
ولا يزالون مختلفين الا من رحم ربكand it is for this that He created them.
ولذلك خلقهمAnd the word of your Guardian shall be fulfilled: "I will surely fill Jahannam with the Occulted and humans, all together."
وتمت كلمه ربك لاملان جهنم من الجنه والناس اجمعينAnd all that We relate to you, among the pieces of information about the messengers, is that by which We make your Conscience firm;
وكلا نقص عليك من انبا الرسل ما نثبت به فوادكand there has come to you, in this, the truth, an admonition, and a reminder for the believers.
وجاك في هذه الحق وموعظه وذكري للمومنينAnd say to those who do not believe: "Act according to your position; we, [too], act; and wait: we too are waiting."
وقل للذين لا يومنون اعملوا علي مكانتكم انا عملون وانتظروا انا منتظرونAnd to God belongs what escapes the senses in the heavens and on the earth,
ولله غيب السموت والارضand to Him the whole matter returns:
واليه يرجع الامر كلهso obey Him, and rely upon Him:
فاعبده وتوكل عليهyour Guardian is not at all heedless of what you do.
وما ربك بغفل عما تعملون
