Al-Hijr
Until Certainty Comes
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Ra.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم الرThese are the signs of the Scripture, and of a clear Recitation.
تلك ايت الكتب وقران مبينIt may often be that those who disown wish they had been true to God alone.
ربما يود الذين كفروا لو كانوا مسلمينLeave them to eat, enjoy themselves, and let hope distract them:
ذرهم ياكلوا ويتمتعوا ويلههم الاملthey will soon know.
فسوف يعلمونWe have not annihilated any city without it having had, concerning it, a known register.
وما اهلكنا من قريه الا ولها كتاب معلومNo community precedes its term, nor delays it.
ما تسبق من امه اجلها وما يستخرونAnd they said: "O you upon whom the Reminder has been sent down, you are surely deranged! Why do you not bring us the Agents, if you are among the truthful?"
وقالوا يايها الذي نزل عليه الذكر انك لمجنون لو ما تاتينا بالمليكه ان كنت من الصدقينWe do not send down the Agents except with truth,
ما ننزل المليكه الا بالحقand then, they would be granted no reprieve.
وما كانوا اذا منظرينIt is indeed We who have sent down the Reminder,
انا نحن نزلنا الذكرand it is We who are surely its preservers.
وانا له لحفظونWe have indeed sent, before you, [messengers] among the factions of the ancients,
ولقد ارسلنا من قبلك في شيع الاولينand no messenger came to them without their mocking him.
وما ياتيهم من رسول الا كانوا به يستهزونThus We insinuate it into the cores of the severed: they do not believe in it, though the precedent of the ancients has already come to pass.
كذلك نسلكه في قلوب المجرمين لا يومنون به وقد خلت سنه الاولينAnd even if We opened for them a gate of the sky, through which they kept ascending, they would say: "Our sight is only obnubilated; we are rather a people abused by illusion."
ولو فتحنا عليهم بابا من السما فظلوا فيه يعرجون لقالوا انما سكرت ابصرنا بل نحن قوم مسحورونWe have indeed placed in the sky constellations, and adorned them for those who look, and preserved them from every banished Diverter — except one who steals a furtive hearing, and is then pursued by a clear, blazing projectile.
ولقد جعلنا في السما بروجا وزينها للنظرين وحفظنها من كل شيطن رجيم الا من استرق السمع فاتبعه شهاب مبينAnd the earth, We spread it out, and cast upon it firmly-anchored mountains, and caused to grow upon it everything in due measure, and We gave you therein means of livelihood,
والارض مددنها والقينا فيها روسي وانبتنا فيها من كل شي موزون وجعلنا لكم فيها معيشas well as to those you do not provide for.
ومن لستم له برزقينThere is nothing whose treasures We do not hold,
وان من شي الا عندنا خزاينهand We send it down only according to a known measure.
وما ننزله الا بقدر معلومAnd We sent the fecundating winds, and then sent down from the sky a water with which We gave you drink, and which you do not hold in reserve.
وارسلنا الريح لوقح فانزلنا من السما ما فاسقينكموه وما انتم له بخزنينAnd it is surely We who give life and give death, and it is We who are the heirs.
وانا لنحن نحي ونميت ونحن الورثونWe indeed know those among you who go first, and We indeed know those who lag behind.
ولقد علمنا المستقدمين منكم ولقد علمنا المستخرينAnd it is indeed your Guardian who will gather them:
وان ربك هو يحشرهمHe is indeed Wise, All-Knowing.
انه حكيم عليمWe have indeed created the human being from resonant clay, [drawn] from molded mud,
ولقد خلقنا الانسن من صلصل من حما مسنونand the Occulted, We had created them before, from a fire of scorching wind.
والجان خلقنه من قبل من نار السمومAnd [recall] when your Guardian said to the Agents: "I am going to create a human from resonant clay, [drawn] from molded mud; when I have formed him and breathed into him of My Influx, fall down before him in prostration."
واذ قال ربك للمليكه اني خلق بشرا من صلصل من حما مسنون فاذا سويته ونفخت فيه من روحي فقعوا له سجدينThe Agents then prostrated, all together, except the Despairing One [Iblis]: he refused to be among those who prostrated.
فسجد المليكه كلهم اجمعون الا ابليس ابي ان يكون مع السجدينHe said: "O Despairing One [Iblis], what is with you, that you are not among those who prostrate?"
قال يابليس ما لك الا تكون مع السجدينHe said: "I am not [made] to prostrate before a human You created from resonant clay, [drawn] from molded mud."
قال لم اكن لاسجد لبشر خلقته من صلصل من حما مسنونHe said: "Get out of here, for you are now banished, and the curse will weigh upon you until the Day of Retribution."
قال فاخرج منها فانك رجيم وان عليك اللعنه الي يوم الدينHe said: "My Guardian, grant me then a delay until the day they are resurrected."
قال رب فانظرني الي يوم يبعثونHe said: "You are indeed among those granted a delay, until the day of the known moment."
قال فانك من المنظرين الي يوم الوقت المعلومHe said: "My Guardian, for having let me be misled, I shall surely make [evil] appear pleasing to them on earth, and I shall surely mislead them all, except Your obedient ones among them who are purified."
قال رب بما اغويتني لازينن لهم في الارض ولاغوينهم اجمعين الا عبادك منهم المخلصينHe said: "This is a path incumbent upon Me, a straight path.
قال هذا صرط علي مستقيمOver My obedient ones, you have no authority, except over whoever follows you among the misled."
ان عبادي ليس لك عليهم سلطن الا من اتبعك من الغاوينAnd Jahannam is surely their meeting-place, all of them; it has seven gates,
وان جهنم لموعدهم اجمعين لها سبعه ابوبto each gate belongs a determined portion of them.
لكل باب منهم جز مقسومThose who guarded themselves will be in gardens and springs: "Enter therein in peace, in security."
ان المتقين في جنت وعيون ادخلوها بسلم امنينAnd We shall have removed from their chests all rancor,
ونزعنا ما في صدورهم من غل[they will be] brothers, upon couches, facing one another.
اخونا علي سرر متقبلينNo fatigue will touch them therein,
لا يمسهم فيها نصبand they will never be expelled from it.
وما هم منها بمخرجينInform My obedient ones that it is I, the Most-Forgiving, the Benevolent, and that My punishment is the painful punishment.
نبي عبادي اني انا الغفور الرحيم وان عذابي هو العذاب الاليمAnd inform them about the guests of Ibrahim, when they entered upon him and said: "Peace!"
ونبيهم عن ضيف ابرهيم اذ دخلوا عليه فقالوا سلماHe said: "We are trembling because of you."
قال انا منكم وجلونThey said: "Do not tremble: we bring you glad tidings of a knowledgeable boy."
قالوا لا توجل انا نبشرك بغلم عليمHe said: "Do you give me this glad tiding, when old age has touched me? Of what then do you give me tidings?"
قال ابشرتموني علي ان مسني الكبر فبم تبشرونThey said: "We bring you this glad tiding in truth: so do not be among those who lose heart."
قالوا بشرنك بالحق فلا تكن من القنطينHe said: "And who loses heart regarding his Guardian's benevolence, except the astray?"
قال ومن يقنط من رحمه ربه الا الضالونHe said: "What then is your errand, O envoys?"
قال فما خطبكم ايها المرسلونThey said: "We are sent to a severed people, except the family of Lut.
قالوا انا ارسلنا الي قوم مجرمين الا ال لوطWe shall surely save them all, except his wife: We have determined that she is indeed among those who remain behind."
انا لمنجوهم اجمعين الا امراته قدرنا انها لمن الغبرينAnd when the envoys came to the family of Lut, he said: "You are people I do not recognize."
فلما جا ال لوط المرسلون قال انكم قوم منكرونThey said: "We bring you rather that about which they were in doubt. We have come to you with the truth, and we are surely truthful.
قالوا بل جينك بما كانوا فيه يمترون واتينك بالحق وانا لصدقونSo depart with your family, at a time of the night, and follow behind them, and let none of you turn around, and go where you are commanded."
فاسر باهلك بقطع من اليل واتبع ادبرهم ولا يلتفت منكم احد وامضوا حيث تومرونAnd We conveyed to him this command: the last remnant of those people would be cut off, by morning.
وقضينا اليه ذلك الامر ان دابر هولا مقطوع مصبحينAnd the people of the Capital came, rejoicing.
وجا اهل المدينه يستبشرونHe said: "These are my guests: do not dishonor me,
قال ان هولا ضيفي فلا تفضحونand guard yourselves toward God, and do not disgrace me."
واتقوا الله ولا تخزونThey said: "Did we not forbid you [to receive] anyone from among all beings?"
قالوا اولم ننهك عن العلمينHe said: "Here are my daughters, if you must act."
قال هولا بناتي ان كنتم فعلينBy your life, they were surely wandering blindly in their intoxication.
لعمرك انهم لفي سكرتهم يعمهونThe Cry then seized them at daybreak, and We made the top [of their city] its bottom, and rained upon them stones of hardened clay.
فاخذتهم الصيحه مشرقين فجعلنا عليها سافلها وامطرنا عليهم حجاره من سجيلThere are surely in that signs for those who can read the marks.
ان في ذلك لايت للمتوسمينAnd it is indeed upon a path that endures.
وانها لبسبيل مقيمThere is surely in that a sign for the believers.
ان في ذلك لايه للمومنينAnd the companions of the Thicket were indeed wrongdoers,
وان كان اصحب الايكه لظلمينso We took vengeance upon them,
فانتقمنا منهمand these two [cities] are indeed upon a manifest reference.
وانهما لبامام مبينThe companions of al-Hijr indeed denied the envoys,
ولقد كذب اصحب الحجر المرسلينAnd We gave them Our signs, but they turned away from them.
واتينهم ايتنا فكانوا عنها معرضينAnd they carved, in the mountains, houses, in complete security.
وكانوا ينحتون من الجبال بيوتا امنينThe Cry then seized them in the morning,
فاخذتهم الصيحه مصبحينand what they had earned availed them nothing.
فما اغني عنهم ما كانوا يكسبونWe created the heavens, the earth, and what is between them, only with truth.
وما خلقنا السموت والارض وما بينهما الا بالحقAnd the Hour is surely coming:
وان الساعه لاتيهso overlook, with a fine overlooking.
فاصفح الصفح الجميلYour Guardian is indeed the Great Creator, the All-Knowing.
ان ربك هو الخلق العليمWe have indeed given you seven of the couplets, and the immense Recitation.
ولقد اتينك سبعا من المثاني والقران العظيمDo not extend your eyes toward what We have granted some pairs among them to enjoy,
لا تمدن عينيك الي ما متعنا به ازوجا منهمand do not grieve over them,
ولا تحزن عليهمand lower your wing for the believers.
واخفض جناحك للمومنينAnd say: "I am, indeed, the clear warner" — as We sent it down upon those who divided it, those who made of this Recitation disparate fragments.
وقل اني انا النذير المبين كما انزلنا علي المقتسمين الذين جعلوا القران عضينBy your Guardian, We shall surely question them all about what they used to do.
فوربك لنسلنهم اجمعين عما كانوا يعملونSo proclaim openly what you are commanded,
فاصدع بما تومرand turn away from those who associate.
واعرض عن المشركينWe have indeed sufficed you against the mockers, those who place, alongside God, another deity:
انا كفينك المستهزين الذين يجعلون مع الله الها اخرthey will soon know.
فسوف يعلمونWe indeed know that your chest tightens from what they say:
ولقد نعلم انك يضيق صدرك بما يقولونso glorify, with praise, your Guardian, and be among those who prostrate,
فسبح بحمد ربك وكن من السجدينand obey your Guardian until certainty comes to you.
واعبد ربك حتي ياتيك اليقين
