Is It You, or Is It We?
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. When the Event occurs, none will be able to deny its coming.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم اذا وقعت الواقعه ليس لوقعتها كاذبهAbasing [some], exalting [others] — when the earth is shaken with a violent shaking, and the mountains are crushed to powder, becoming scattered dust, and you become three categories.
خافضه رافعه اذا رجت الارض رجا وبست الجبال بسا فكانت هبا منبثا وكنتم ازوجا ثلثهThe companions of the right side — what are the companions of the right side?
فاصحب الميمنه ما اصحب الميمنهAnd the companions of the left side — what are the companions of the left side?
واصحب المشمه ما اصحب المشمهAnd the foremost, the foremost...
والسبقون السبقونThose are the ones brought near, in the gardens of bliss.
اوليك المقربون في جنت النعيمA multitude from the first [generations] and few from the last, on woven couches, reclining on them, face to face.
ثله من الاولين وقليل من الاخرين علي سرر موضونه متكين عليها متقبلينAround them will circulate children made eternal, with goblets, ewers, and a cup [drawn] from a gushing spring — from which they will neither ache nor be intoxicated — and fruit of their choosing, and the flesh of birds that they desire.
يطوف عليهم ولدن مخلدون باكواب واباريق وكاس من معين لا يصدعون عنها ولا ينزفون وفكهه مما يتخيرون ولحم طير مما يشتهونAnd companions of listening and support, like well-guarded pearls, in recompense for what they used to do.
وحور عين كامثل اللولو المكنون جزا بما كانوا يعملونThey will hear therein no idle talk and no incitement to transgression.
لا يسمعون فيها لغوا ولا تاثيماOnly the saying: "Peace, peace."
الا قيلا سلما سلماAnd the companions of the right — what are the companions of the right?
واصحب اليمين ما اصحب اليمينAmong thornless lote trees, and clustered banana trees, extended shade, flowing water, abundant fruit neither cut off nor forbidden, and raised couches.
في سدر مخضود وطلح منضود وظل ممدود وما مسكوب وفكهه كثيره لا مقطوعه ولا ممنوعه وفرش مرفوعهWe brought them into being in a [new] coming-into-being, and made them beings inaugural, loving, fertile and of shared stock, for the companions of the right.
انا انشانهن انشا فجعلنهن ابكارا عربا اترابا لاصحب اليمينA multitude from the first [generations] and a multitude from the last.
ثله من الاولين وثله من الاخرينAnd the companions of the left — what are the companions of the left?
واصحب الشمال ما اصحب الشمالIn scorching wind, and boiling water, and a shade of black smoke — neither cool nor pleasant.
في سموم وحميم وظل من يحموم لا بارد ولا كريمIndeed, they were before that among the privileged.
انهم كانوا قبل ذلك مترفينAnd they used to persist in the immense perjury.
وكانوا يصرون علي الحنث العظيمAnd they used to say: "When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we be resurrected — we, or our earliest forefathers?"
وكانوا يقولون ايذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما انا لمبعوثون اواباونا الاولونSay: "Indeed, the first and the last will surely be gathered together at the appointment of a known day."
قل ان الاولين والاخرين لمجموعون الي ميقت يوم معلومThen surely you, O astray, denying ones, will eat from the tree of Zaqqoum, and fill your bellies with it, and drink on top of it boiling water, drinking as thirsty camels drink.
ثم انكم ايها الضالون المكذبون لاكلون من شجر من زقوم فمالون منها البطون فشربون عليه من الحميم فشربون شرب الهيمThis is their welcome on the Day of Retribution.
هذا نزلهم يوم الدينIt is We who created you.
نحن خلقنكمSo why do you not declare it true?
فلولا تصدقونHave you considered that which you emit? Is it you who create it, or are We the Creator?
افريتم ما تمنون انتم تخلقونه ام نحن الخلقونIt is We who have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outrun in replacing you with your likenesses and producing you in that which you do not know.
نحن قدرنا بينكم الموت وما نحن بمسبوقين علي ان نبدل امثلكم وننشيكم في ما لا تعلمونAnd you have already known the first genesis.
ولقد علمتم النشاه الاوليSo why do you not remember?
فلولا تذكرونHave you considered that which you cultivate? Is it you who sow it, or are We the Sower?
افريتم ما تحرثون انتم تزرعونه ام نحن الزرعونIf We willed, We could make it debris, and you would remain lamenting: "We are surely ruined! Rather, we are dispossessed."
لو نشا لجعلنه حطما فظلتم تفكهون انا لمغرمون بل نحن محرومونHave you considered the water that you drink? Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?
افريتم الما الذي تشربون انتم انزلتموه من المزن ام نحن المنزلونIf We willed, We could make it bitter.
لو نشا جعلنه اجاجاSo why are you not grateful?
فلولا تشكرونHave you considered the fire that you kindle? Is it you who brought its tree into being, or are We the One who brings it into being?
افريتم النار التي تورون انتم انشاتم شجرتها ام نحن المنشونWe made it a reminder and a benefit for the travelers.
نحن جعلنها تذكره ومتعا للمقوينSo glorify in the name of your Guardian, the Immense.
فسبح باسم ربك العظيمNo! I swear by the positions of the stars — and indeed, it is an immense oath, if you but knew — indeed, it is a noble Recitation, in a well-guarded scripture, which none touch except the purified.
فلا اقسم بموقع النجوم وانه لقسم لو تعلمون عظيم انه لقران كريم في كتب مكنون لا يمسه الا المطهرونA revealed descent from the Guardian of all beings.
تنزيل من رب العلمينIs it this discourse that you treat with complaisance, and do you make your denial [your response to your] provision?
افبهذا الحديث انتم مدهنون وتجعلون رزقكم انكم تكذبونThen why, when [the soul] reaches the throat, and you at that moment are looking on, and We are nearer to it than you, but you do not see — then why, if you were not subject to retribution, do you not bring it back, if you are truthful?
فلولا اذا بلغت الحلقوم وانتم حينيذ تنظرون ونحن اقرب اليه منكم ولكن لا تبصرون فلولا ان كنتم غير مدينين ترجعونها ان كنتم صدقينAs for the one who is among those brought near: rest, and fragrance, and a garden of bliss.
فاما ان كان من المقربين فروح وريحان وجنت نعيمAs for the one who is among the companions of the right: "Peace to you," from the companions of the right.
واما ان كان من اصحب اليمين فسلم لك من اصحب اليمينAs for the one who is among the denying, astray ones: a welcome of boiling water, and an immersion in the Blaze.
واما ان كان من المكذبين الضالين فنزل من حميم وتصليه جحيمSurely, this is the truth of certainty.
ان هذا لهو حق اليقينSo glorify in the name of your Guardian, the Immense.
فسبح باسم ربك العظيم
