۞

Al-Imran

  • In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim.i 1
  • God, there is no deity but Him, 2
  • the Living, the Self-Subsisting. He sent down upon you the Scripture, in truth, confirming what precedes it,i 3
  • and He sent down, before, the Tawrah and the Injil, a guidance for mankind, and He sent down the Discernment. 4
  • Those who have denied-disowned the signs of God will have a severe punishment. 4
  • God is All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance. 4
  • Nothing, on earth or in the sky, escapes God. 5
  • It is He who shapes you in the wombs as He wills. 6
  • There is no deity but Him, 6
  • the All-Powerful, the Wise. 6
  • It is He who sent down upon you the Scripture;i 7
  • in it are signs of firm terms, which are the foundation of the Scripture, and others, subject to resemblance.i 7
  • As for those in whose cores is a deviation, they follow what, in the Scripture, lends itself to resemblance, in pursuit of discord and in pursuit of its interpretation; 7
  • but none knows its interpretation, except God. 7
  • And those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say: "We believe in it; all of it comes from our Guardian"; 7
  • and only the possessors of intelligence take heed. 7
  • "Our Guardian, do not let our cores deviate after You have guided us, and grant us, from Yourself, a benevolence; 8
  • You are, You, the great Bestower. 8
  • Our Guardian, You are the One who gathers mankind for a day without doubt possible. 9
  • God never fails His promise." 9
  • Those who deny-disown, neither their possessions nor their children will avail them at all against God. 10
  • Those are the ones who will fuel the Fire, like the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,i 11
  • and of those before them, who denied Our signs; God then seized them for their offenses. 11
  • God is severe in punishment. 11
  • Say to those who deny-disown: "You will be defeated, and gathered toward Jahannam." 12
  • And what an evil bed! 12
  • You had a sign in those two forces that met: 13
  • one fought in the way of God, and the other denied-disowned, seeing it, with the naked eye, twice as numerous as itself. 13
  • God reinforces, by His help, whom He wills. 13
  • There is indeed a lesson in that for the possessors of sight. 13
  • The love of passions has been embellished for people: women, children, heaped treasures of gold and silver, thoroughbred horses, cattle, and crops. 14
  • That is the enjoyment of the present life; 14
  • but it is with God that the best destination is found. 14
  • Say: "Shall I inform you of something better than that? 15
  • For those who guard themselves, with their Guardian, gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, purified spouses, and a good pleasure from God." 15
  • God sees perfectly His obedient ones, 15
  • those who say: "Our Guardian, we have believed; forgive us, then, our offenses, and preserve us from the punishment of the Fire", 16
  • the patient, the truthful, the devoted, those who spend, and those who ask forgiveness before dawn. 17
  • God bears witness, and so do the Agents and the possessors of knowledge, that there is no deity but Him, standing firm in equity.i 18
  • There is no deity but Him, 18
  • the All-Powerful, the Wise. 18
  • The Law, with God, is being true to Him alone. 19
  • And those to whom the Scripture was given diverged only after knowledge had come to them,i 19
  • out of transgression among themselves. 19
  • And whoever denies-disowns the signs of God — God is swift in reckoning. 19
  • If they dispute with you, say then: "I render my direction integral toward God, as do those who have followed me."i 20
  • And say to those to whom the Scripture was given, and to the people without a prior Scripture: "Have you become integral toward God?"i 20
  • If they become so, they are then rightly guided; 20
  • and if they turn away, only the transmission is incumbent upon you. 20
  • God sees perfectly His obedient ones. 20
  • Those who deny-disown the signs of God, kill the prophets without right, and kill those who, among people, order equity — announce to them a painful punishment. 21
  • Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life, 22
  • and they will have no helpers. 22
  • Have you not seen those to whom a portion of the Scripture was given, called to the Scripture of God so that it may judge between them, then a group of them turns away, resolutely?i 23
  • That is because they said: "The Fire will touch us only for a counted number of days"; and what they used to invent deceived them in their Law. 24
  • How then, when We will have gathered them for a day without doubt possible, and every Self will have been fully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged? 25
  • Say: "O God, Sovereign of dominion! You give dominion to whom You will, and You strip dominion from whom You will; You honor whom You will, and You abase whom You will; good is in Your hand. 26
  • You have power over all things. 26
  • You make the night penetrate into the day, and You make the day penetrate into the night; You bring forth the living from the dead, and You bring forth the dead from the living; and You provide sustenance to whom You will, without measure." 27
  • Let not the believers take those who deny-disown as allies, besides the believers; 28
  • and whoever does that has nothing more to do with God — except if you guard yourselves from them as a precaution. 28
  • God warns you against Himself, 28
  • and to God is the destination. 28
  • Say: "Whether you hide what is in your chests, or show it, God knows it. 29
  • And He knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. 29
  • God has power over all things. 29
  • The day when every Self will find present what it has done of good, 30
  • and what it has done of evil, it would wish there were between that and itself an immense distance. 30
  • God warns you against Himself. 30
  • God is full of bonté toward His obedient ones. 30
  • Say: "If you love God, follow me: God will love you and forgive you your offenses. 31
  • God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence." 31
  • Say: "Obey God and the messenger"; 32
  • and if they turn away, God does not love those who deny-disown. 32
  • God has certainly chosen Adam, Nuh, the family of Ibrahim, and the family of Imran, above all beings, descendants one from another.i 34
  • God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. 34
  • remember when the wife of Imran said: "My Guardian, I devote to You what is in my belly, wholly consecrated; accept it, then, from me.i 35
  • You are, You, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." 35
  • Then, when she gave birth to her, she said: "My Guardian, I have given birth to her, a girl" — God knew better, though, what she had given birth to — 36
  • "and the male is not like the female; 36
  • I have named her Maryam,i 36
  • and I place her, and her descendants, under Your protection, against the banished Diverter."i 36
  • Her Guardian received her with a beautiful reception, and made her grow with a beautiful growth, 37
  • and entrusted her care to Zakariya.i 37
  • Every time Zakariya entered upon her in the place of prayer, he found near her a provision.i 37
  • He said: "O Maryam! from where does this come to you?"i 37
  • She said: "It comes from God. 37
  • God provides sustenance to whom He wills, without measure." 37
  • Right there, Zakariya invoked his Guardian.i 38
  • He said: "My Guardian, grant me, from Yourself, an excellent offspring; You are the Hearer of invocation." 38
  • The Agents called him while he maintained the Contact in the oratory: "God announces to you Yahya, confirming a word from God, a chief, a man of total continence, and a prophet, among the righteous."i 39
  • He said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a boy, when old age has already reached me, and my wife is barren?" 40
  • He said: "Thus it is: 40
  • God does what He wills." 40
  • He said: "My Guardian, give me a sign." 41
  • He said: "Your sign will be that you will not speak to people except by gestures, for three days. 41
  • And remember your Guardian abundantly, and glorify Him in the evening and at dawn." 41
  • And remember when the Agents said: "O Maryam! God has chosen you, purified you, and chosen you above the women of all beings.i 42
  • O Maryam! be devoted toward your Guardian, prostrate, and bow with those who bow."i 43
  • That is information that escapes the senses, which We reveal to you.i 44
  • You were not with them when they cast their reeds [to draw lots] as to which of them would take charge of Maryam,i 44
  • and you were not with them when they disputed. remember when the Agents said: "O Maryam! God announces to you a word from Himself,i 45
  • whose name will be Al-Massih, Issa, son of Maryam, illustrious in the present life and in the last life, and among those brought near.i 45
  • He will speak to people in the cradle and in maturity, 46
  • and will be among the righteous." 46
  • She said: "My Guardian, how shall I have a child, when no man has touched me?" 47
  • He said: "Thus it is: 47
  • God creates what He wills. 47
  • When He decrees a thing, He only says to it: Be", 47
  • and it is. 47
  • "And He will teach him the Code, wisdom, the Tawrah and the Injil, and [will send him as] a messenger to the children of Israel: I bring you a sign from your Guardian:i 49
  • I fashion for you, from clay, the form of a bird, then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird, with God's permission. 49
  • And I heal the born-blind and the leper, and I bring the dead back to life, with God's permission. 49
  • And I inform you of what you eat and what you store up in your houses. 49
  • There is indeed a sign in that for you, if you are believers. 49
  • And [I come] confirming what, of the Tawrah, precedes me, and to make lawful for you a part of what was forbidden to you. 50
  • I bring you a sign from your Guardian; 50
  • guard yourselves, then, toward God, and obey me. 50
  • God is my Guardian and your Guardian; obey Him, then. 51
  • That is a straight path." 51
  • When Issa perceived denial-disowning from them, he said: "Who will be my helpers toward God?"i 52
  • The disciples said: "We are the helpers of God.i 52
  • We believe in God, and bear witness that we are true to Him alone. 52
  • Our Guardian, we have believed in what You have sent down, and we have followed the messenger; inscribe us, then, among the witnesses." 53
  • They plotted, and God plotted [in return], 54
  • and God is the best of those who weave plots. 54
  • remember when God said: "O Issa! I am going to take you back to Me, raise you to Me, and purify you from those who denied-disowned,i 55
  • and place those who followed you above those who denied-disowned, until the Day of Appearance. 55
  • Then to Me will be your return, and I will judge between you concerning what you used to differ over. 55
  • As for those who denied-disowned, I will punish them with a severe punishment, in the present life and in the last life, 56
  • and they will have no helpers. 56
  • And as for those who have believed and done righteous deeds, He will pay them their rewards in full. 57
  • God does not love the unjust." 57
  • That is what We recite to you of the signs and the wise Reminder. 58
  • The likeness of Issa, with God, is like that of Adam:i 59
  • He created him from earth, then said to him: "Be",i 59
  • and he was. 59
  • That is the truth from your Guardian; 60
  • so do not be among those who doubt. 60
  • To whoever would dispute with you about this, after knowledge has come to you, say: "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then let us pray fervently, and call the curse of God upon the liars." 61
  • This is indeed the true account, 62
  • and there is no deity but God. 62
  • And God is indeed the All-Powerful, the Wise. 62
  • If they turn away, God knows perfectly the sowers of corruption. 63
  • Say: "O people of the Scripture! come to an equitable word between us and you: that we obey none but God, that we associate nothing with Him, and that none of us take others as masters besides God."i 64
  • If they turn away, say then: "Bear witness that we are true to God alone." 64
  • O people of the Scripture! why do you dispute concerning Ibrahim,i 65
  • when the Tawrah and the Injil were sent down only after him? 65
  • Will you not then reason? 65
  • Here you are disputing about that of which you have some knowledge; but why do you dispute about that of which you have no knowledge? 66
  • God knows, 66
  • and you do not know. 66
  • Ibrahim was neither Reoriented nor a Helper, but he was wholly turned toward God, integral to Him, and he was not among those who associate.i 67
  • and he was not among those who associate. 67
  • The people closest to Ibrahim are indeed those who followed him, as well as this prophet and those who have believed.i 68
  • God is the protector of the believers. 68
  • A group among the people of the Scripture would have liked to lead you astray;i 69
  • but they lead astray none but themselves, without realizing it. 69
  • O people of the Scripture! why do you deny-disown the signs of God, when you bear witness to them?i 70
  • O people of the Scripture! why do you cover the truth with falsehood, and hide the truth, when you know?i 71
  • And a group among the people of the Scripture said: "Believe in what has been revealed to those who have believed, at the start of the day, and deny it at its end, perhaps they will turn back [from their faith]."i 72
  • "And believe only him who follows your Law." 73
  • Say: "The [true] guidance is the guidance of God" — [they say this] lest anyone be given the like of what you were given, or lest they dispute with you before your Guardian. 73
  • Say: "Favor is in the hand of God, 73
  • He gives it to whom He wills. 73
  • God is Vast, All-Knowing." 73
  • He reserves His benevolence for whom He wills. 74
  • God holds the immense favor. 74
  • And among the people of the Scripture, there are some who, if you entrust them with a treasure, will return it to you;i 75
  • and there is one who, if you entrust him with a dinar, does not restore it to you unless you keep pressing him. 75
  • That is because they say: "We have, toward the people without a prior Scripture, no obligation", 75
  • and they say falsehood against God, while knowing. 75
  • But yes, whoever keeps his engagement and guards himself — God loves those who guard themselves. 76
  • Those who sell the engagement of God and their oaths for a small price — those are the ones who will have no share in the last life; God will not speak to them, will not look at them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them. 77
  • They will have a painful punishment. 77
  • And among them, there is indeed a group who twist their tongues [reciting] the Scripture, so that you might take it for an extract of the Scripture, when it is not part of it,i 78
  • and they say: "This is from God", 78
  • when it is not from God, 78
  • and they say falsehood against God, while knowing. 78
  • It is not for any human being to whom God has given the Scripture, the judgment, and the prophecy, to then say to people: "Be obedient to me, besides God"; but rather: "Be spiritual masters, by reason of what you teach of the Scripture and what you study."i 79
  • And he would not order you to take the Agents and the prophets as masters.i 80
  • Would he order you to deny-disown, after you have become true to God alone? 80

  • and if He abandons you, who then could help you after Him? 160
  • And it is upon God that the believers should rely. 160
  • It is not for a prophet to commit an embezzlement; 161
  • and whoever commits an embezzlement will come, on the Day of Appearance, with what he embezzled, 161
  • then every Self will be fully repaid for what it has earned, without being wronged. 161
  • Is he who follows the good pleasure of God, then, like him who incurs the anger of God, and whose refuge will be Jahannam? 162
  • And what an evil destination! 162
  • They have degrees with God. 163
  • God sees perfectly what they do. 163
  • God has indeed blessed the believers, by raising up among them a messenger, from among themselves, who recites His signs to them, purifies them, and teaches them the Scripture and the wisdom, though before they were in manifest error.i 164
  • How then, when misfortune strikes you, after you had inflicted double that, do you say: "From where, then, does this come?" 165
  • Say: "This comes from yourselves." 165
  • God has power over all things. 165
  • And what befell you, on the day the two forces met, was with God's permission, and so that He might recognize the believers, and recognize those who practiced hypocrisy, 167
  • and so that it might be said to them: "Come, fight in the way of God, or repel [the enemy]"; 167
  • they said: "If we knew how to fight, we would certainly have followed you." 167
  • That day, they were closer to denial-disowning than to faith, 167
  • saying with their mouths what was not in their cores. 167
  • God knows best what they hide. 167
  • Those who, having stayed seated, said of their brothers: "Had they obeyed us, they would not have been killed." 168
  • Say: "Ward off death from yourselves, then, if you are truthful." 168
  • And never think that those who have been killed in the way of God are dead. 169
  • No, they are alive, with their Guardian, provided [with blessings], rejoicing in what God has given them of His favor, and rejoicing for those who, remaining behind them, have not yet joined them: no fear upon them, and they will not grieve. 170
  • They rejoice in a blessing from God and a favor, and [in the fact] that God does not let the reward of the believers be lost, those who responded to God and to the messenger after the wound had struck them. 172
  • To those among them who did good and guarded themselves belongs an immense reward. 172
  • Those to whom the people said: "The people have gathered against you, so fear them" — that increased their faith. 173
  • And they said: "God suffices us; what an excellent guardian!" 173
  • They returned then with a blessing from God and a favor, without any evil having touched them, and they followed the good pleasure of God. 174
  • God holds an immense favor. 174
  • It is only that Diverter who frightens his allies; do not fear them, then,i 175
  • but fear Me, if you are believers. 175
  • And let not those grieve you who hasten into denial-disowning: 176
  • they will not harm God at all. 176
  • God wants to give them no share in the last life, 176
  • and they will have an immense punishment. 176
  • Those who buy denial-disowning at the price of faith will not harm God at all, and they will have a painful punishment. 177
  • And let not those who deny-disown by any means think that the delay We grant them is a good for themselves: 178
  • We grant it to them only so that they may increase in transgression, 178
  • and they will have a humiliating punishment. 178
  • It is not for God to leave the believers in the state you are in, without distinguishing the vile from the good, 179
  • and it is not in God's nature to unveil to you what escapes the senses,i 179
  • but God chooses, among His messengers, whom He wills. 179
  • So believe in God and in His messengers; 179
  • and if you believe and guard yourselves, you will have an immense reward. 179
  • And let not those who are stingy with what God has given them of His favor by any means think that it is a good for them; 180
  • it is rather an evil for them. 180
  • They will be encircled by what they were stingy with, on the Day of Appearance. 180
  • And to God belongs the inheritance of the heavens and the earth. 180
  • God is well informed of what you do. 180
  • God has indeed heard the saying of those who said: "God is poor, and we are rich." 181
  • We will record what they said, and their killing of the prophets without right, and We will say: "Taste the punishment of the burning blaze. 181
  • That is for what your hands have prepared"; and God is not at all unjust toward His the constrained. 182
  • Those who said: "God has bound us not to believe in any messenger, until he brings us an offering that the fire consumes", 183
  • say: "Messengers before me indeed came to you with clear proofs, and with what you said; why then did you kill them, if you are truthful?" 183
  • If they deny you, messengers have already been denied before you, who had come with clear proofs, the Formularies, and the luminous Scripture.i 184
  • Every Self tastes death, 185
  • and it is only on the Day of Appearance that you will be fully repaid your rewards. 185
  • Whoever is drawn away from the Fire and admitted into the Garden has thus triumphed. 185
  • And the present life is nothing but a deceptive enjoyment. 185
  • You will certainly be tried in your possessions and in your Selves, and you will certainly hear, from those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and from those who have associated, much harm.i 186
  • But if you are patient and guard yourselves, that is part of the firmness of resolutions. 186
  • And remember when God took the engagement of those to whom the Scripture was given: "You will certainly make it clear to mankind, and you will not hide it"; but they cast it behind their backs, and sold it for a small price.i 187
  • How evil is what they buy! 187
  • Do not by any means think that those who rejoice in what they have done, and love to be praised for what they did not do — do not by any means think that they will escape the punishment. 188
  • They will have a painful punishment. 188
  • And to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. 189
  • God has power over all things. 189
  • There are indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, signs for the possessors of intelligence, those who remember God, standing, sitting, or lying on their sides, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: 191
  • "Our Guardian, You did not create this in vain. Glory be to You! 191
  • Preserve us, then, from the punishment of the Fire. 191
  • Our Guardian, whoever You admit into the Fire, You have indeed covered him with disgrace, 192
  • and the unjust have no helpers. 192
  • Our Guardian, we have heard a herald calling to faith: Believe in your Guardian — and we have believed. 193
  • Our Guardian, forgive us, then, our offenses, erase for us our evil deeds, and take us back to You with the good. 193
  • Our Guardian, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers, and do not cover us with disgrace on the Day of Appearance: 194
  • You never fail Your promise." 194
  • Their Guardian answered them, then: "I never let the deed of one of you who acts be lost, male or female — 195
  • you are of one another. 195
  • Those who have emigrated, been expelled from their dwellings, been persecuted on My way, fought, and been killed, I will certainly cover their evil deeds, and I will certainly admit them into gardens beneath which rivers flow" — a reward from God. 195
  • And it is with God that the best reward is found. 195
  • Let not the free movement of those who deny-disown through the land deceive you. 196
  • It is an enjoyment of little worth, 197
  • then their refuge will be Jahannam, 197
  • and what an evil bed! 197
  • But those who have guarded themselves toward their Guardian will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, as a welcome from God. 198
  • And what is with God is better for the good. 198
  • And among the people of the Scripture, there are indeed some who believe in God, in what has been revealed to you, and in what was revealed to them, humble toward God,i 199
  • not selling the signs of God for a small price. 199
  • Those are the ones whose reward is found with their Guardian. 199
  • God is swift in reckoning. 199
  • O you who have believed! be patient, surpass [others] in patience, stand ready with firmness, and guard yourselves toward God, perhaps you will succeed. 200
