Peace upon the Envoys
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. By those that range themselves in ranks, by those who drive back with force, by those who recite the Reminder: your deity is surely one,
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم والصفت صفا فالزجرت زجرا فالتليت ذكرا ان الهكم لوحدGuardian of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, and Guardian of the risings [of the sun].
رب السموت والارض وما بينهما ورب المشرقWe have adorned the nearest heaven with the adornment of the heavenly bodies,
انا زينا السما الدنيا بزينه الكواكبand preserved it from every rebellious Diverter,
وحفظا من كل شيطن ماردwho cannot listen to the sublime assembly, and are pelted from every side,
لا يسمعون الي الملا الاعلي ويقذفون من كل جانبdriven off violently;
دحوراand they have an unceasing punishment — except him who snatches a fleeting glimpse: a piercing flame then pursues him.
ولهم عذاب واصب الا من خطف الخطفه فاتبعه شهاب ثاقبAsk them then: are they harder to create, or those We have created?
فاستفتهم اهم اشد خلقا ام من خلقناWe created them from a clinging clay.
انا خلقنهم من طين لازبBut you marvel, while they mock;
بل عجبت ويسخرونand when they are reminded, they do not remember;
واذا ذكروا لا يذكرونand when they see a sign, they redouble their mockery,
واذا راوا ايه يستسخرونand say: "This is nothing but a plain illusion. When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we be raised? And our earliest forefathers too?"
وقالوا ان هذا الا سحر مبين اذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما انا لمبعوثون اواباونا الاولونSay: "Yes, and you will be abased."
قل نعم وانتم دخرونIt will be but a single rumbling blast, and there they are, looking on,
فانما هي زجره وحده فاذا هم ينظرونsaying: "Woe to us, this is the Day of Retribution!"
وقالوا يويلنا هذا يوم الدين"This is the Day of Separation, which you used to deny."
هذا يوم الفصل الذي كنتم به تكذبون"Gather those who did wrong, their spouses, and what they used to obey besides God, then guide them to the path of the Blaze,
احشروا الذين ظلموا وازوجهم وما كانوا يعبدون من دون الله فاهدوهم الي صرط الجحيمand hold them: they are to be questioned."
وقفوهم انهم مسولون"What is wrong with you, that you do not help one another?"
ما لكم لا تناصرونNo, that day, they are utterly submissive.
بل هم اليوم مستسلمونAnd they turn to one another, questioning each other.
واقبل بعضهم علي بعض يتسالونThey say: "It was you who used to come at us from the right."
قالوا انكم كنتم تاتوننا عن اليمينThey answer: "No, it was you who were not believers;
قالوا بل لم تكونوا مومنينand we had no authority over you — you were rather a people who exceeded all measure.
وما كان لنا عليكم من سلطن بل كنتم قوما طغينSo our Guardian's saying has proven true against us: we shall indeed taste [the punishment]. We misled you — we ourselves were misled."
فحق علينا قول ربنا انا لذايقون فاغوينكم انا كنا غوينThat day, they are all partners in the punishment.
فانهم يوميذ في العذاب مشتركونThis is indeed how We deal with the severed.
انا كذلك نفعل بالمجرمينSurely, whenever it was said to them, "There is no deity but God," they would swell with pride and say: "Shall we abandon our deities for a deranged beguiling rhetorician?"
انهم كانوا اذا قيل لهم لا اله الا الله يستكبرون ويقولون اينا لتاركوا الهتنا لشاعر مجنونNo, he came with the truth, and affirmed the envoys.
بل جا بالحق وصدق المرسلينYou will surely taste the painful punishment,
انكم لذايقوا العذاب الاليمand you will be recompensed only for what you used to do — except the purified obedient ones of God:
وما تجزون الا ما كنتم تعملون الا عباد الله المخلصينthose have a known provision, savoury fruits,
اوليك لهم رزق معلوم فوكهand they are honored in the Gardens of bliss, on couches facing one another.
وهم مكرمون في جنت النعيم علي سرر متقبلينA cup will be passed among them from a [pure] spring, white, delightful for those who drink it, causing no headache and no intoxication,
يطاف عليهم بكاس من معين بيضا لذه للشربين لا فيها غول ولا هم عنها ينزفونand beside them will be companions of reserved, clear gaze, as though they were well-sheltered eggs.
وعندهم قصرت الطرف عين كانهن بيض مكنونAnd they turn to one another, questioning each other.
فاقبل بعضهم علي بعض يتسالونOne of them says: "I had a companion who used to say: 'Are you truly one of those who hold this to be true? When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we truly be judged?'"
قال قايل منهم اني كان لي قرين يقول انك لمن المصدقين اذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما انا لمدينونHe says: "Do you wish to look?" So he looked, and saw him in the midst of the Blaze.
قال هل انتم مطلعون فاطلع فراه في سوا الجحيمHe says: "By God, you nearly caused my ruin; and were it not for my Guardian's blessing, I would have been among those brought forth [for punishment].
قال تالله ان كدت لتردين ولولا نعمه ربي لكنت من المحضرينAre we not dead, except our first death, and shall we not be punished?"
افما نحن بميتين الا موتتنا الاولي وما نحن بمعذبينThis is surely the immense triumph!
ان هذا لهو الفوز العظيمIt is for such an outcome that those who act should act.
لمثل هذا فليعمل العملونIs that a better welcome, or the tree of Zaqqoum?
اذلك خير نزلا ام شجره الزقومWe have made it a trial for the wrongdoers:
انا جعلنها فتنه للظلمينit is indeed a tree that grows at the root of the Blaze, whose fruits resemble the heads of Diverters.
انها شجره تخرج في اصل الجحيم طلعها كانه روس الشيطينThey will eat from it and fill their bellies with it; then on top of it they will have a mixture of scalding water.
فانهم لاكلون منها فمالون منها البطون ثم ان لهم عليها لشوبا من حميمThen their return will surely be to the Blaze.
ثم ان مرجعهم لالي الجحيمThey found their ancestors astray, and rushed headlong in their footsteps.
انهم الفوا اباهم ضالين فهم علي اثرهم يهرعونAnd indeed, before them, most of the earlier peoples had gone astray,
ولقد ضل قبلهم اكثر الاولينand We had certainly sent warners among them.
ولقد ارسلنا فيهم منذرينSo see what was the end of those who were warned — except the purified obedient ones of God.
فانظر كيف كان عقبه المنذرين الا عباد الله المخلصينAnd Nuh indeed called upon Us,
ولقد نادينا نوحand what an excellent Responder We are!
فلنعم المجيبونWe saved him and his household from the immense distress,
ونجينه واهله من الكرب العظيمand We made his descendants the ones who endured.
وجعلنا ذريته هم الباقينAnd We left upon him, among later generations:
وتركنا عليه في الاخرين"Peace upon Nuh, among all beings!"
سلم علي نوح في العلمينThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
انا كذلك نجزي المحسنينHe was indeed among Our believing obedient ones.
انه من عبادنا المومنينThen We drowned the others.
ثم اغرقنا الاخرينAnd Ibrahim was surely of his [spiritual] line, when he came to his Guardian with a sound core, when he said to his father and his people: "What do you obey?
وان من شيعته لابرهيم اذ جا ربه بقلب سليم اذ قال لابيه وقومه ماذا تعبدونIs it a distortion — do you desire deities besides God?
ايفكا الهه دون الله تريدونWhat then do you think of the Guardian of all beings?"
فما ظنكم برب العلمينHe cast a glance at the stars, and said: "I am unwell"; so they turned away from him, departing.
فنظر نظره في النجوم فقال اني سقيم فتولوا عنه مدبرينThen he stole away to their deities, and said: "Do you not eat? What is wrong with you, that you utter nothing?"
فراغ الي الهتهم فقال الا تاكلون ما لكم لا تنطقونThen he turned upon them, striking with his right hand; then [his people] came rushing toward him.
فراغ عليهم ضربا باليمين فاقبلوا اليه يزفونHe said: "Do you obey what you carve, when God created you and what you make?"
قال اتعبدون ما تنحتون والله خلقكم وما تعملونThey said: "Build him a structure, and cast him into the Blaze!" They intended a scheme against him, but We made them the lowest.
قالوا ابنوا له بنينا فالقوه في الجحيم فارادوا به كيدا فجعلنهم الاسفلينAnd he said: "I am going to my Guardian; He will guide me.
وقال اني ذاهب الي ربي سيهدينMy Guardian, grant me [a child] among the righteous."
رب هب لي من الصلحينSo We gave him the good news of a forbearing boy.
فبشرنه بغلم حليمAnd when he reached the age of walking with him, he said: "O my son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you; consider, then, what you think."
فلما بلغ معه السعي قال يبني اني اري في المنام اني اذبحك فانظر ماذا تريHe said: "O my father, do what you are commanded;
قال يابت افعل ما تومرyou will find me, if God wills, among the patient."
ستجدني ان شا الله من الصبرينAnd when both of them had become true to God alone, and he had laid him down on his forehead, We called out to him: "O Ibrahim, you have indeed confirmed the vision."
فلما اسلما وتله للجبين وندينه ان يابرهيم قد صدقت الرياThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
انا كذلك نجزي المحسنينThis was surely the manifest testing.
ان هذا لهو البلوا المبينAnd We ransomed him with an immense sacrifice.
وفدينه بذبح عظيمAnd We left upon him, among later generations:
وتركنا عليه في الاخرين"Peace upon Ibrahim!"
سلم علي ابرهيمThis is how We recompense those who do good.
كذلك نجزي المحسنينHe was indeed among Our believing obedient ones.
انه من عبادنا المومنينAnd We gave him the good news of Ishaq, a prophet among the righteous, and We blessed him and Ishaq.
وبشرنه باسحق نبيا من الصلحين وبركنا عليه وعلي اسحقAnd among their descendants is one who excels [in good], and one who is manifestly unjust toward his own Self.
ومن ذريتهما محسن وظالم لنفسه مبينAnd We indeed favored Moussa and Harun, and saved them and their people from the immense distress;
ولقد مننا علي موسي وهرون ونجينهما وقومهما من الكرب العظيمWe helped them, and they were the ones who prevailed.
ونصرنهم فكانوا هم الغلبينAnd We gave them both the clear Scripture,
واتينهما الكتب المستبينand We guided them both along the straight path.
وهدينهما الصرط المستقيمAnd We left upon them both, among later generations:
وتركنا عليهما في الاخرين"Peace upon Moussa and Harun!"
سلم علي موسي وهرونThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
انا كذلك نجزي المحسنينThey were indeed both among Our believing obedient ones.
انهما من عبادنا المومنينAnd Elias was surely among the envoys, when he said to his people: "Will you not guard yourselves? Do you call upon Ba'l, forsaking the best of creators,
وان الياس لمن المرسلين اذ قال لقومه الا تتقون اتدعون بعلا وتذرون احسن الخلقينGod, your Guardian and the Guardian of your earliest forefathers?"
الله ربكم ورب ابايكم الاولينBut they denied him; so they will surely be among those brought forth [for punishment] — except the purified obedient ones of God.
فكذبوه فانهم لمحضرون الا عباد الله المخلصينAnd We left upon him, among later generations:
وتركنا عليه في الاخرين"Peace upon Ilyasin!"
سلم علي ال ياسينThus indeed do We recompense those who do good.
انا كذلك نجزي المحسنينHe was indeed among Our believing obedient ones.
انه من عبادنا المومنينAnd Lut was surely among the envoys, when We saved him and his household, all of them, except an old woman among those left behind; then We destroyed the others.
وان لوطا لمن المرسلين اذ نجينه واهله اجمعين الا عجوزا في الغبرين ثم دمرنا الاخرينAnd you surely pass by them in the morning, and at night —
وانكم لتمرون عليهم مصبحين وباليلdo you not reason?
افلا تعقلونAnd Younes was surely among the envoys, when he fled to the laden ship; he took part in the drawing of lots, and was among those who lost; then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.
وان يونس لمن المرسلين اذ ابق الي الفلك المشحون فساهم فكان من المدحضين فالتقمه الحوت وهو مليمHad he not been among those who glorify, he would indeed have remained in its belly until the day they are raised.
فلولا انه كان من المسبحين للبث في بطنه الي يوم يبعثونSo We cast him onto bare ground, while he was unwell,
فنبذنه بالعرا وهو سقيمand We caused a soft, cotton-like plant to grow over him.
وانبتنا عليه شجره من يقطينWe then sent him to a hundred thousand [people], or more,
وارسلنه الي مايه الف او يزيدونand they believed; so We let them enjoy [life] for a while.
فامنوا فمتعنهم الي حينAsk them then: does your Guardian have daughters, while they have sons?
فاستفتهم الربك البنات ولهم البنونOr did We create the Agents female, while they witnessed it?
ام خلقنا المليكه انثا وهم شهدونIs it not that, out of their own distortion, they say: "God has begotten"? They are indeed liars.
الا انهم من افكهم ليقولون ولد الله وانهم لكذبونWould He have preferred daughters over sons?
اصطفي البنات علي البنينWhat is wrong with you?
ما لكمHow do you judge?
كيف تحكمونWill you not then remember?
افلا تذكرونOr do you have a clear authority? Then bring your book, if you are truthful.
ام لكم سلطن مبين فاتوا بكتبكم ان كنتم صدقينAnd they have set up a kinship between Him and the Occulted;
وجعلوا بينه وبين الجنه نسباand these entities well know that they themselves will indeed be brought forth [for punishment] —
ولقد علمت الجنه انهم لمحضرونglory be to God, above what they describe!
سبحن الله عما يصفونExcept the purified obedient ones of God.
الا عباد الله المخلصينNeither you, nor what you obey, can lead anyone astray against Him, except him who is destined to burn in the Blaze.
فانكم وما تعبدون ما انتم عليه بفتنين الا من هو صال الجحيم"There is not one among us who does not have a known place,
وما منا الا له مقام معلومand we are indeed those who stand in ranks, and we are indeed those who glorify."
وانا لنحن الصافون وانا لنحن المسبحونAnd they indeed used to say: "If only we had a reminder from the earlier peoples, we would have been the purified obedient ones of God."
وان كانوا ليقولون لو ان عندنا ذكرا من الاولين لكنا عباد الله المخلصينBut they disowned [it] when it came;
فكفروا بهthey will soon know.
فسوف يعلمونAnd Our word has indeed gone forth in favor of Our envoys, the obedient ones: they are indeed the ones who are helped, and it is indeed Our army that prevails.
ولقد سبقت كلمتنا لعبادنا المرسلين انهم لهم المنصورون وان جندنا لهم الغلبونSo turn away from them for a while,
فتول عنهم حتي حينand watch them: they will soon see clearly.
وابصرهم فسوف يبصرونIs it Our punishment that they seek to hasten?
افبعذابنا يستعجلونWhen it descends into their courtyard, how evil will be the morning of those who were warned!
فاذا نزل بساحتهم فسا صباح المنذرينSo turn away from them for a while,
وتول عنهم حتي حينand watch: they will soon see clearly.
وابصر فسوف يبصرونGlory be to your Guardian, the Guardian of might, above what they describe!
سبحن ربك رب العزه عما يصفونAnd peace upon the envoys!
وسلم علي المرسلينAnd praise be to God, Guardian of all beings!
والحمد لله رب العلمين
