Sourate As-Saffat (37) original (rasm)

In the name of God, the benevolent, the Kind. By the ranks drawn up in order, by those who drive back with force, by those who recite the Reminder: your god is indeed one,i 4

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم والصفت صفا فالزجرت زجرا فالتليت ذكرا ان الهكم لوحد

Guardian of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, and Guardian of the risings [of the sun]. 5

رب السموت والارض وما بينهما ورب المشرق

We have adorned the nearest heaven with the ornament of the stars, 6

انا زينا السما الدنيا بزينه الكواكب

and guarded it from every rebellious Diverter,i 7

وحفظا من كل شيطن مارد

who cannot listen to the sublime assembly, and are pelted from every side, 8

لا يسمعون الي الملا الاعلي ويقذفون من كل جانب

driven off violently; 9

دحورا

and they have an unceasing punishment — except him who snatches a fleeting glimpse: a piercing flame then pursues him. 10

ولهم عذاب واصب الا من خطف الخطفه فاتبعه شهاب ثاقب

Ask them then: are they harder to create, or those We have created? 11

فاستفتهم اهم اشد خلقا ام من خلقنا

We created them from a clinging clay. 11

انا خلقنهم من طين لازب

But you marvel, while they mock; 12

بل عجبت ويسخرون

and when they are reminded, they do not remember; 13

واذا ذكروا لا يذكرون

and when they see a sign, they redouble their mockery, 14

واذا راوا ايه يستسخرون

and say: "This is nothing but a plain illusion. When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we be resurrected — we, or our earliest forefathers?" 17

وقالوا ان هذا الا سحر مبين اذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما انا لمبعوثون اواباونا الاولون

Say: "Yes, and you will be humbled." 18

قل نعم وانتم دخرون

It will be but a single rumbling blast, and there they are, looking on, 19

فانما هي زجره وحده فاذا هم ينظرون

saying: "Woe to us, this is the Day of Retribution!" 20

وقالوا يويلنا هذا يوم الدين

"This is the Day of Separation, which you used to deny." 21

هذا يوم الفصل الذي كنتم به تكذبون

"Gather those who did wrong, their spouses, and what they used to obey besides God, then guide them to the path of the Blaze, 23

احشروا الذين ظلموا وازوجهم وما كانوا يعبدون من دون الله فاهدوهم الي صرط الجحيم

and hold them: they are to be questioned." 24

وقفوهم انهم مسولون

"What is wrong with you, that you do not help one another?" 25

ما لكم لا تناصرون

No, that day, they are utterly submissive. 26

بل هم اليوم مستسلمون

And they turn to one another, questioning each other. 27

واقبل بعضهم علي بعض يتسالون

They say: "It was you who used to come at us from the right." 28

قالوا انكم كنتم تاتوننا عن اليمين

They answer: "No, it was you who were not believers; 29

قالوا بل لم تكونوا مومنين

and we had no authority over you — you were rather a tyrannical people. 30

وما كان لنا عليكم من سلطن بل كنتم قوما طغين

So our Guardian's word has justly come due against us: we shall indeed taste [the punishment]. We led you astray — we ourselves were astray." 32

فحق علينا قول ربنا انا لذايقون فاغوينكم انا كنا غوين

That day, they are all partners in the punishment. 33

فانهم يوميذ في العذاب مشتركون

This is how We deal with the severed. 34

انا كذلك نفعل بالمجرمين

Indeed, whenever it was said to them, "There is no god but God," they would swell with arrogance and say: "Shall we abandon our gods for a deranged beguiling rhetorician?"i 36

انهم كانوا اذا قيل لهم لا اله الا الله يستكبرون ويقولون اينا لتاركوا الهتنا لشاعر مجنون

No, he came with the truth, and confirmed the messengers. 37

بل جا بالحق وصدق المرسلين

You will surely taste the painful punishment, 38

انكم لذايقوا العذاب الاليم

and you will be repaid only for what you used to do — except the purified obedient ones of God: 40

وما تجزون الا ما كنتم تعملون الا عباد الله المخلصين

those have a known provision, fruits, 42

اوليك لهم رزق معلوم فوكه

and they are honored in the Gardens of Bliss, on couches facing one another. 44

وهم مكرمون في جنت النعيم علي سرر متقبلين

A cup will be passed among them from a [pure] spring, white, delightful for those who drink it, causing no headache and no intoxication, 47

يطاف عليهم بكاس من معين بيضا لذه للشربين لا فيها غول ولا هم عنها ينزفون

and beside them will be companions of reserved, clear gaze, as though they were closely guarded eggs. 49

وعندهم قصرت الطرف عين كانهن بيض مكنون

And they turn to one another, questioning each other. 50

فاقبل بعضهم علي بعض يتسالون

One of them says: "I had a companion who used to say: 'Are you truly one of those who hold this to be true? When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we truly be judged?'"i 53

قال قايل منهم اني كان لي قرين يقول انك لمن المصدقين اذا متنا وكنا ترابا وعظما انا لمدينون

He says: "Do you wish to look?" So he looked, and saw him in the midst of the Blaze. 55

قال هل انتم مطلعون فاطلع فراه في سوا الجحيم

He says: "By God, you nearly caused my ruin; and were it not for my Guardian's favor, I would have been among those brought forth [for punishment]. 57

قال تالله ان كدت لتردين ولولا نعمه ربي لكنت من المحضرين

Are we not dead, except our first death, and shall we not be punished?" 59

افما نحن بميتين الا موتتنا الاولي وما نحن بمعذبين

This is indeed the immense triumph! 60

ان هذا لهو الفوز العظيم

It is for such an outcome that those who act should act. 61

لمثل هذا فليعمل العملون

Is that a better welcome, or the tree of Zaqqoum?i 62

اذلك خير نزلا ام شجره الزقوم

We have made it a trial for the wrongdoers: 63

انا جعلنها فتنه للظلمين

it is a tree that grows at the root of the Blaze, whose fruits resemble the heads of Diverters.i 65

انها شجره تخرج في اصل الجحيم طلعها كانه روس الشيطين

They will eat from it and fill their bellies with it; then on top of it they will have a mixture of scalding water. 67

فانهم لاكلون منها فمالون منها البطون ثم ان لهم عليها لشوبا من حميم

Then their return will indeed be to the Blaze. 68

ثم ان مرجعهم لالي الجحيم

They found their ancestors astray, and rushed headlong in their footsteps.i 70

انهم الفوا اباهم ضالين فهم علي اثرهم يهرعون

And indeed, before them, most of the earlier peoples had gone astray, 71

ولقد ضل قبلهم اكثر الاولين

and We had certainly sent warners among them. 72

ولقد ارسلنا فيهم منذرين

So see what became of those who were warned — except the purified obedient ones of God. 74

فانظر كيف كان عقبه المنذرين الا عباد الله المخلصين

And Nuh indeed called upon Us,i 75

ولقد نادينا نوح

and what an excellent Responder We are! 75

فلنعم المجيبون

We saved him and his household from the great distress, 76

ونجينه واهله من الكرب العظيم

and We made his offspring the ones who endured. 77

وجعلنا ذريته هم الباقين

And We left upon him, among later generations: 78

وتركنا عليه في الاخرين

"Peace upon Nuh, among all beings!"i 79

سلم علي نوح في العلمين

This is how We reward those who excel [in good]. 80

انا كذلك نجزي المحسنين

He was among Our believing obedient ones. 81

انه من عبادنا المومنين

Then We drowned the others. 82

ثم اغرقنا الاخرين

And Ibrahim was indeed of his [spiritual] line, when he came to his Guardian with a sound Core, when he said to his father and his people: "What do you obey?i 85

وان من شيعته لابرهيم اذ جا ربه بقلب سليم اذ قال لابيه وقومه ماذا تعبدون

Is it a lie — do you desire gods besides God? 86

ايفكا الهه دون الله تريدون

What then do you think of the Guardian of all beings?" 87

فما ظنكم برب العلمين

He cast a glance at the stars, and said: "I am unwell"; so they turned away from him, departing. 90

فنظر نظره في النجوم فقال اني سقيم فتولوا عنه مدبرين

Then he stole away to their gods, and said: "Do you not eat? What is wrong with you, that you do not speak?" 92

فراغ الي الهتهم فقال الا تاكلون ما لكم لا تنطقون

Then he turned upon them, striking with his right hand; then [his people] came rushing toward him.i 94

فراغ عليهم ضربا باليمين فاقبلوا اليه يزفون

He said: "Do you obey what you carve, when God created you and what you make?" 96

قال اتعبدون ما تنحتون والله خلقكم وما تعملون

They said: "Build him a structure, and cast him into the Blaze!" They intended a scheme against him, but We made them the lowest. 98

قالوا ابنوا له بنينا فالقوه في الجحيم فارادوا به كيدا فجعلنهم الاسفلين

And he said: "I am going to my Guardian; He will guide me. 99

وقال اني ذاهب الي ربي سيهدين

My Guardian, grant me [a child] among the righteous." 100

رب هب لي من الصلحين

So We gave him the good news of a reflective boy.i 101

فبشرنه بغلم حليم

And when he reached the age of walking with him, he said: "O my son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you; consider, then, what you think." 102

فلما بلغ معه السعي قال يبني اني اري في المنام اني اذبحك فانظر ماذا تري

He said: "O my father, do what you are commanded; 102

قال يابت افعل ما تومر

you will find me, if God wills, among the steadfast." 102

ستجدني ان شا الله من الصبرين

And when both of them had rendered themselves integral toward God, and he had laid him down on his forehead, We called out to him: "O Ibrahim, you have indeed confirmed the vision."i 105

فلما اسلما وتله للجبين وندينه ان يابرهيم قد صدقت الريا

This is how We reward those who excel [in good]. 105

انا كذلك نجزي المحسنين

This was indeed the manifest trial. 106

ان هذا لهو البلوا المبين

And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice. 107

وفدينه بذبح عظيم

And We left upon him, among later generations: 108

وتركنا عليه في الاخرين

"Peace upon Ibrahim!"i 109

سلم علي ابرهيم

This is how We reward those who excel [in good]. 110

كذلك نجزي المحسنين

He was among Our believing obedient ones. 111

انه من عبادنا المومنين

And We gave him the good news of Ishaq, a prophet among the righteous, and We blessed him and Ishaq.i 113

وبشرنه باسحق نبيا من الصلحين وبركنا عليه وعلي اسحق

And among their offspring is one who excels [in good], and one who is manifestly unjust toward his own Self. 113

ومن ذريتهما محسن وظالم لنفسه مبين

And We indeed favored Moussa and Harun, and saved them and their people from the great distress;i 115

ولقد مننا علي موسي وهرون ونجينهما وقومهما من الكرب العظيم

We aided them, and they were the ones who prevailed. 116

ونصرنهم فكانوا هم الغلبين

And We gave them both the clear Scripture,i 117

واتينهما الكتب المستبين

and We guided them both to the straight path. 118

وهدينهما الصرط المستقيم

And We left upon them both, among later generations: 119

وتركنا عليهما في الاخرين

"Peace upon Moussa and Harun!"i 120

سلم علي موسي وهرون

This is how We reward those who excel [in good]. 121

انا كذلك نجزي المحسنين

They were both among Our believing obedient ones. 122

انهما من عبادنا المومنين

And Elias was indeed among the messengers, when he said to his people: "Will you not guard yourselves? Do you call upon Ba'l, forsaking the best of creators,i 125

وان الياس لمن المرسلين اذ قال لقومه الا تتقون اتدعون بعلا وتذرون احسن الخلقين

God, your Guardian and the Guardian of your earliest forefathers?" 126

الله ربكم ورب ابايكم الاولين

But they denied him; so they will indeed be among those brought forth [for punishment] — except the purified obedient ones of God. 128

فكذبوه فانهم لمحضرون الا عباد الله المخلصين

And We left upon him, among later generations: 129

وتركنا عليه في الاخرين

"Peace upon Ilyasin!"i 130

سلم علي ال ياسين

This is how We reward those who excel [in good]. 131

انا كذلك نجزي المحسنين

He was among Our believing obedient ones. 132

انه من عبادنا المومنين

And Lut was indeed among the messengers, when We saved him and his household, all of them, except an old woman among those left behind; then We destroyed the others.i 136

وان لوطا لمن المرسلين اذ نجينه واهله اجمعين الا عجوزا في الغبرين ثم دمرنا الاخرين

And you indeed pass by them in the morning, 138

وانكم لتمرون عليهم مصبحين وباليل

and at night — do you not reason? 138

افلا تعقلون

And Younes was indeed among the messengers, when he fled to the laden ship; he took part in the drawing of lots, and was among those who lost; then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy.i 142

وان يونس لمن المرسلين اذ ابق الي الفلك المشحون فساهم فكان من المدحضين فالتقمه الحوت وهو مليم

Had he not been among those who glorify, he would indeed have remained in its belly until the day they are resurrected. 144

فلولا انه كان من المسبحين للبث في بطنه الي يوم يبعثون

So We cast him onto a bare shore, while he was unwell, 145

فنبذنه بالعرا وهو سقيم

and We caused a soft, cotton-like plant to grow over him.i 146

وانبتنا عليه شجره من يقطين

We then sent him to a hundred thousand [people], or more, 147

وارسلنه الي مايه الف او يزيدون

and they believed; so We let them enjoy [life] for a while. 148

فامنوا فمتعنهم الي حين

Ask them then: does your Guardian have daughters, while they have sons? 149

فاستفتهم الربك البنات ولهم البنون

Or did We create the Agents female, while they witnessed it?i 150

ام خلقنا المليكه انثا وهم شهدون

Is it not that, out of their own falsehood, they say: "God has begotten"? They are indeed liars. 152

الا انهم من افكهم ليقولون ولد الله وانهم لكذبون

Would He have preferred daughters over sons? 153

اصطفي البنات علي البنين

What is wrong with you? 154

ما لكم

How do you judge in this way? 154

كيف تحكمون

Will you not then take heed? 155

افلا تذكرون

Or do you have a clear authority? Then bring your book, if you are truthful.i 157

ام لكم سلطن مبين فاتوا بكتبكم ان كنتم صدقين

And they have set up a kinship between Him and the Occulted;i 158

وجعلوا بينه وبين الجنه نسبا

and these entities well know that they themselves will indeed be brought forth [for punishment] — 158

ولقد علمت الجنه انهم لمحضرون

glory be to God, above what they describe! 159

سبحن الله عما يصفون

Except the purified obedient ones of God. 160

الا عباد الله المخلصين

Neither you, nor what you obey, can lead anyone astray against Him, except him who is destined to burn in the Blaze. 163

فانكم وما تعبدون ما انتم عليه بفتنين الا من هو صال الجحيم

"There is not one among us who does not have a known place, 164

وما منا الا له مقام معلوم

and we are indeed those who stand in ranks, and we are indeed those who glorify." 166

وانا لنحن الصافون وانا لنحن المسبحون

And they indeed used to say: "If only we had a reminder from the earlier peoples, we would have been the purified obedient ones of God." 169

وان كانوا ليقولون لو ان عندنا ذكرا من الاولين لكنا عباد الله المخلصين

But they denied [it] when it came; 170

فكفروا به

they will soon know. 170

فسوف يعلمون

And Our word has indeed gone forth in favor of Our messengers, the obedient ones: they are indeed the ones who are helped, and it is indeed Our army that prevails. 173

ولقد سبقت كلمتنا لعبادنا المرسلين انهم لهم المنصورون وان جندنا لهم الغلبون

So turn away from them for a while, 174

فتول عنهم حتي حين

and watch them: they will soon see. 175

وابصرهم فسوف يبصرون

Is it Our punishment that they seek to hasten? 176

افبعذابنا يستعجلون

When it descends into their courtyard, how evil will be the morning of those who were warned! 177

فاذا نزل بساحتهم فسا صباح المنذرين

So turn away from them for a while, 178

وتول عنهم حتي حين

and watch: they will soon see. 179

وابصر فسوف يبصرون

Glory be to your Guardian, the Guardian of might, above what they describe! 180

سبحن ربك رب العزه عما يصفون

And peace upon the messengers! 181

وسلم علي المرسلين

And praise be to God, Guardian of all beings! 182

والحمد لله رب العلمين
