Al-Mumtahana
The Boundary of Alliance
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who have believed! Do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies,
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم يايها الذين امنوا لا تتخذوا عدوي وعدوكم اولياoffering them affection, while they have disowned the truth that has come to you,
تلقون اليهم بالموده وقد كفروا بما جاكم من الحقdriving out the messenger and yourselves, because you believe in God, your Guardian.
يخرجون الرسول واياكم ان تومنوا بالله ربكمIf you went forth to strive in My way and seek My pleasure, [do not ally with them] confiding your affection to them secretly, while I know best what you have concealed and what you have revealed.
ان كنتم خرجتم جهدا في سبيلي وابتغا مرضاتي تسرون اليهم بالموده وانا اعلم بما اخفيتم وما اعلنتمAnd whoever among you does this has strayed from the straight path.
ومن يفعله منكم فقد ضل سوا السبيلIf they overtake you, they will be enemies to you, and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil,
ان يثقفوكم يكونوا لكم اعدا ويبسطوا اليكم ايديهم والسنتهم بالسوand they would like you to disown.
وودوا لو تكفرونNeither your kinship nor your children will benefit you,
لن تنفعكم ارحامكم ولا اولدكمon the Day of Appearance He will separate between you.
يوم القيمه يفصل بينكمAnd God sees perfectly what you do.
والله بما تعملون بصيرYou have had a good example in Ibrahim and those with him, when they said to their people: We are clear of you and of what you obey besides God; we disown you, and there has appeared between us and you enmity and hatred forever, until you believe in God alone — except the saying of Ibrahim to his father: I will surely ask forgiveness for you, and I possess nothing for you against God.
قد كانت لكم اسوه حسنه في ابرهيم والذين معه اذ قالوا لقومهم انا بروا منكم ومما تعبدون من دون الله كفرنا بكم وبدا بيننا وبينكم العدوه والبغضا ابدا حتي تومنوا بالله وحده الا قول ابرهيم لابيه لاستغفرن لك وما املك لك من الله من شيOur Guardian, upon You we rely, and to You we turn, and to You is the destination.
ربنا عليك توكلنا واليك انبنا واليك المصيرOur Guardian, do not make us a trial for those who disown,
ربنا لا تجعلنا فتنه للذين كفرواand forgive us, our Guardian.
واغفر لنا ربناYou, indeed, are the All-Powerful, the Wise.
انك انت العزيز الحكيمYou have indeed had in them a good example, for whoever hopes for [the meeting with] God and the Last Day.
لقد كان لكم فيهم اسوه حسنه لمن كان يرجوا الله واليوم الاخرAnd whoever turns away — indeed God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
ومن يتول فان الله هو الغني الحميدIt may be that God will place affection between you and those you have held as enemies among them,
عسي الله ان يجعل بينكم وبين الذين عاديتم منهم مودهand God is Capable,
والله قديرand God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
والله غفور رحيمGod does not forbid you from being virtuous and equitable toward those who did not fight you concerning the Law and did not expel you from your homes.
لا ينهيكم الله عن الذين لم يقتلوكم في الدين ولم يخرجوكم من ديركم ان تبروهم وتقسطوا اليهمGod indeed loves the equitable.
ان الله يحب المقسطينGod only forbids you from taking as allies those who fought you concerning the Law, expelled you from your homes, and supported your expulsion.
انما ينهيكم الله عن الذين قتلوكم في الدين واخرجوكم من ديركم وظهروا علي اخراجكم ان تولوهمAnd whoever allies with them — those are the wrongdoers.
ومن يتولهم فاوليك هم الظلمونO you who have believed! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them.
يايها الذين امنوا اذا جاكم المومنت مهجرت فامتحنوهنGod knows best their faith.
الله اعلم بايمنهنIf you know them to be believers, do not return them to those who disown.
فان علمتموهن مومنت فلا ترجعوهن الي الكفارThey are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them.
لا هن حل لهم ولا هم يحلون لهنAnd give them what they have spent.
واتوهم ما انفقواThere is no blame upon you in marrying them when you give them their rewards.
ولا جناح عليكم ان تنكحوهن اذا اتيتموهن اجورهنAnd do not hold to the [marriage] ties of those women who disown.
ولا تمسكوا بعصم الكوافرAsk for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent.
وسلوا ما انفقتم وليسلوا ما انفقواThat is the judgment of God; He judges between you.
ذلكم حكم الله يحكم بينكمAnd God is All-Knowing, Wise.
والله عليم حكيمAnd if any of your wives escape from you to those who disown, and you then pay back in kind, then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent.
وان فاتكم شي من ازوجكم الي الكفار فعاقبتم فاتوا الذين ذهبت ازوجهم مثل ما انفقواAnd guard yourselves toward God, in whom you believe.
واتقوا الله الذي انتم به مومنونO Prophet! When believing women come to you to pledge allegiance to you that they will not associate anything with God, not steal, not commit fornication, not kill their children, not bring forth slander they have invented between their hands and feet, and not disobey you in what is recognized, accept their pledge and ask God's forgiveness for them.
يايها النبي اذا جاك المومنت يبايعنك علي ان لا يشركن بالله شيا ولا يسرقن ولا يزنين ولا يقتلن اولدهن ولا ياتين ببهتن يفترينه بين ايديهن وارجلهن ولا يعصينك في معروف فبايعهن واستغفر لهن اللهIndeed, God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
ان الله غفور رحيمO you who have believed! Do not take as allies a people with whom God is angry, who have lost hope of the last life, just as those who disown have lost hope of the companions of the graves.
يايها الذين امنوا لا تتولوا قوما غضب الله عليهم قد ييسوا من الاخره كما ييس الكفار من اصحب القبور
