Al-A'raf
Am I Not Your Guardian?
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Alif. Lam. Mim. Ṣad.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم المصA Scripture has been sent down to you — let there be no distress in your chest because of it — so that you may warn by it, and [that it be] a reminder for the believers.
كتب انزل اليك فلا يكن في صدرك حرج منه لتنذر به وذكري للمومنينFollow what has been sent down to you from your Guardian,
اتبعوا ما انزل اليكم من ربكمand do not follow, besides Him, other allies.
ولا تتبعوا من دونه اولياHow little you remember!
قليلا ما تذكرونHow many a city have We annihilated! Our rigor came upon it by night, or while it was taking its midday rest.
وكم من قريه اهلكنها فجاها باسنا بيتا او هم قايلونTheir only cry, when Our rigor came to them, was to say: "We have indeed been wrongdoers."
فما كان دعويهم اذ جاهم باسنا الا ان قالوا انا كنا ظلمينWe will certainly question those to whom [messengers] were sent, and We will certainly question the envoys,
فلنسلن الذين ارسل اليهم ولنسلن المرسلينand We will relate to them, with full knowledge,
فلنقصن عليهم بعلمfor We were not absent.
وما كنا غايبينThe weighing, on that day, will be the truth.
والوزن يوميذ الحقThose whose balances are heavy — those are the ones who succeed.
فمن ثقلت موزينه فاوليك هم المفلحونAnd those whose balances are light — those are the ones who will have caused the loss of their Selves, for having been unjust toward Our signs.
ومن خفت موزينه فاوليك الذين خسروا انفسهم بما كانوا بايتنا يظلمونWe have indeed established you on the earth, and We have given you therein means of livelihood.
ولقد مكنكم في الارض وجعلنا لكم فيها معيشHow little you are grateful!
قليلا ما تشكرونWe indeed created you, then We gave you form, then We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam"; they prostrated,
ولقد خلقنكم ثم صورنكم ثم قلنا للمليكه اسجدوا لادم فسجدواexcept the Despairing One [Iblis]: he was not among those who prostrated.
الا ابليس لم يكن من السجدينHe said: "What prevented you from prostrating, when I commanded you?"
قال ما منعك الا تسجد اذ امرتكHe said: "I am better than him: You created me from fire, and You created him from clay."
قال انا خير منه خلقتني من نار وخلقته من طينHe said: "Then descend from here: it is not for you to act proudly here; go out, then, you are indeed among the diminished."
قال فاهبط منها فما يكون لك ان تتكبر فيها فاخرج انك من الصغرينHe said: "Grant me a delay, until the day they are raised."
قال انظرني الي يوم يبعثونHe said: "You are indeed among those granted a delay."
قال انك من المنظرينHe said: "Since You have let me be misled, I will certainly settle in wait for them on Your straight path, then I will certainly come at them, from before them and from behind them, from their right and from their left,
قال فبما اغويتني لاقعدن لهم صرطك المستقيم ثم لاتينهم من بين ايديهم ومن خلفهم وعن ايمنهم وعن شمايلهمand You will not find most of them grateful."
ولا تجد اكثرهم شكرينHe said: "Get out of here, despised, driven away.
قال اخرج منها مذوما مدحوراWhoever among them follows you — I will certainly fill Jahannam with all of you."
لمن تبعك منهم لاملان جهنم منكم اجمعين"O Adam! dwell, you and your spouse, in the Garden, and eat from it wherever you wish,
ويادم اسكن انت وزوجك الجنه فكلا من حيث شيتماbut do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."
ولا تقربا هذه الشجره فتكونا من الظلمينBut the Diverter whispered to them, so as to reveal to them what had been hidden from them of their nakedness,
فوسوس لهما الشيطن ليبدي لهما ما وري عنهما من سوتهماand he said: "Your Guardian has forbidden you this tree only to prevent you from becoming Agents, or from being among those who abide eternally."
وقال ما نهيكما ربكما عن هذه الشجره الا ان تكونا ملكين او تكونا من الخلدينAnd he swore to them both: "I am surely, for you two, among the sincere advisors" — thus he brought them down by deception.
وقاسمهما اني لكما لمن النصحين فدليهما بغرورWhen they had tasted the tree, their nakedness became apparent to them, and they both set about covering themselves with leaves from the Garden.
فلما ذاقا الشجره بدت لهما سوتهما وطفقا يخصفان عليهما من ورق الجنهAnd their Guardian called out to them: "Did I not forbid you this tree, and did I not tell you that the Diverter is, for you two, a manifest enemy?"
وناديهما ربهما الم انهكما عن تلكما الشجره واقل لكما ان الشيطن لكما عدو مبينThey both said: "Our Guardian, we have been unjust to ourselves; if You do not forgive us and have benevolence on us, we will certainly be among the losers."
قالا ربنا ظلمنا انفسنا وان لم تغفر لنا وترحمنا لنكونن من الخسرينHe said: "Descend.
قال اهبطواYou will be enemies to one another.
بعضكم لبعض عدوAnd you will have, on the earth, a dwelling and an enjoyment for a time."
ولكم في الارض مستقر ومتع الي حينHe said: "There you will live, there you will die, and from there you will be brought forth."
قال فيها تحيون وفيها تموتون ومنها تخرجونO children of Adam! We have sent down for you a garment that covers your nakedness, as well as feathers; and the garment of guardedness —
يبني ادم قد انزلنا عليكم لباسا يوري سوتكم وريشا ولباس التقويthat is better.
ذلك خيرThat is one of the signs of God — perhaps they will remember.
ذلك من ايت الله لعلهم يذكرونO children of Adam! let not the Diverter try you as he made your two ancestors go out of the Garden, stripping them of their garment to show them their nakedness.
يبني ادم لا يفتننكم الشيطن كما اخرج ابويكم من الجنه ينزع عنهما لباسهما ليريهما سوتهماHe sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them.
انه يريكم هو وقبيله من حيث لا ترونهمWe have made the diverters allies for those who do not believe.
انا جعلنا الشيطين اوليا للذين لا يومنونAnd when they commit an indecency, they say: "We found our ancestors doing this, and God ordered it to us."
واذا فعلوا فحشه قالوا وجدنا عليها ابانا والله امرنا بهاSay: "God does not order indecency.
قل ان الله لا يامر بالفحشاWill you say about God what you do not know?"
اتقولون علي الله ما لا تعلمونSay: "My Guardian has ordered equity.
قل امر ربي بالقسطMaintain your directions toward Him at every moment of prostration,
واقيموا وجوهكم عند كل مسجدand invoke Him, devoting the Law exclusively to Him.
وادعوه مخلصين له الدينAs He originated you, you will return."
كما بداكم تعودونOne group, He has guided;
فريقا هديand [another] group, error has proven true upon them.
وفريقا حق عليهم الضللهThat is indeed because they took the diverters as allies besides God, while deeming themselves among those who let themselves be guided.
انهم اتخذوا الشيطين اوليا من دون الله ويحسبون انهم مهتدونO children of Adam! take your adornment at every moment of prostration, and eat and drink,
يبني ادم خذوا زينتكم عند كل مسجد وكلوا واشربواbut do not waste:
ولا تسرفواHe indeed does not love the wasteful.
انه لا يحب المسرفينSay: "Who has forbidden God's adornment, which He brought forth for His obedient ones, and the good things of provision?"
قل من حرم زينه الله التي اخرج لعباده والطيبت من الرزقSay: "It is for those who have believed in the present life, exclusive on the Day of Appearance."
قل هي للذين امنوا في الحيوه الدنيا خالصه يوم القيمهThus do We detail the signs for a people who know.
كذلك نفصل الايت لقوم يعلمونSay: "My Guardian has forbidden only indecencies, apparent or hidden, transgression, aggression without right, that you associate with God that for which He has sent down no authority, and that you say about God what you do not know."
قل انما حرم ربي الفوحش ما ظهر منها وما بطن والاثم والبغي بغير الحق وان تشركوا بالله ما لم ينزل به سلطنا وان تقولوا علي الله ما لا تعلمونAnd to every community a term.
ولكل امه اجلWhen their term arrives, they cannot delay it by an hour,
فاذا جا اجلهم لا يستاخرون ساعهnor advance it.
ولا يستقدمونO children of Adam! if messengers from among yourselves come to you, relating My signs to you — whoever guards himself and reforms, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
يبني ادم اما ياتينكم رسل منكم يقصون عليكم ايتي فمن اتقي واصلح فلا خوف عليهم ولا هم يحزنونBut those who denied Our signs and swelled with pride about them — those are the companions of the Fire, they will abide therein eternally.
والذين كذبوا بايتنا واستكبروا عنها اوليك اصحب النار هم فيها خلدونWho is then more unjust than one who invents a lie against God, or denies His signs?
فمن اظلم ممن افتري علي الله كذبا او كذب بايتهThose are the ones who will receive their share of the register,
اوليك ينالهم نصيبهم من الكتبuntil Our envoys come to keep them faithfully: "Where are those you used to invoke besides God?" They will say: "They have strayed away from us",
حتي اذا جاتهم رسلنا يتوفونهم قالوا اين ما كنتم تدعون من دون الله قالوا ضلوا عناand they will bear witness against themselves that they were disowning.
وشهدوا علي انفسهم انهم كانوا كفرينHe will say: "Enter among communities that preceded you, of the Occulted and humans, into the Fire."
قال ادخلوا في امم قد خلت من قبلكم من الجن والانس في النارEvery time a community enters, it curses its [preceding] sister,
كلما دخلت امه لعنت اختهاuntil, having all joined therein, the last of them will say of the first: "Our Guardian, these are the ones who led us astray; give them, then, a double punishment from the Fire."
حتي اذا اداركوا فيها جميعا قالت اخريهم لاوليهم ربنا هولا اضلونا فاتهم عذابا ضعفا من النارHe will say: "To each the double,
قال لكل ضعفbut you do not know."
ولكن لا تعلمونAnd the first of them will say to the last: "You then have no advantage over us; taste, then, the punishment, for what you used to earn."
وقالت اوليهم لاخريهم فما كان لكم علينا من فضل فذوقوا العذاب بما كنتم تكسبونThose who denied Our signs and swelled with pride about them, the gates of heaven will not open for them, and they will not enter the Garden, until the camel passes through the eye of the needle.
ان الذين كذبوا بايتنا واستكبروا عنها لا تفتح لهم ابوب السما ولا يدخلون الجنه حتي يلج الجمل في سم الخياطThus do We recompense the severed.
وكذلك نجزي المجرمينThey will have, from Jahannam, a bed,
لهم من جهنم مهادand, above them, coverings [of fire].
ومن فوقهم غواشThus do We recompense the wrongdoers.
وكذلك نجزي الظلمينThose who have believed and done righteous deeds — We do not impose upon any Self except its capacity —
والذين امنوا وعملوا الصلحت لا نكلف نفسا الا وسعهاthose are the companions of the Garden, they will abide therein eternally.
اوليك اصحب الجنه هم فيها خلدونAnd We will have removed from their chests all rancor; rivers will flow beneath them,
ونزعنا ما في صدورهم من غل تجري من تحتهم الانهرand they will say: "Praise be to God, who guided us to this;
وقالوا الحمد لله الذي هدينا لهذاwe would not have been guided, had God not guided us.
وما كنا لنهتدي لولا ان هدينا اللهThe messengers of our Guardian did indeed come with the truth."
لقد جات رسل ربنا بالحقAnd it will be called out to them: "This is the Garden which you have inherited, for what you used to do."
ونودوا ان تلكم الجنه اورثتموها بما كنتم تعملونAnd the companions of the Garden will call out to the companions of the Fire: "We have found true what our Guardian promised us; have you found true what your Guardian promised you?"
ونادي اصحب الجنه اصحب النار ان قد وجدنا ما وعدنا ربنا حقا فهل وجدتم ما وعد ربكم حقاThey will say: "Yes."
قالوا نعمThen a herald will proclaim among them: "The curse of God is upon the wrongdoers, who turn [others] away from the way of God, seeking to make it crooked, and who disown the last life."
فاذن موذن بينهم ان لعنه الله علي الظلمين الذين يصدون عن سبيل الله ويبغونها عوجا وهم بالاخره كفرونand between the two, a veil.
وبينهما حجابAnd on the Heights [an identification checkpoint], men who recognize each one by his marks,
وعلي الاعراف رجال يعرفون كلا بسيميهمand they will call out to the companions of the Garden: "Peace be upon you" —
ونادوا اصحب الجنه ان سلم عليكمthey themselves have not entered it, though longing for it.
لم يدخلوها وهم يطمعونAnd when their gazes are turned toward the companions of the Fire, they will say: "Our Guardian, do not place us with the wrongdoing people."
واذا صرفت ابصرهم تلقا اصحب النار قالوا ربنا لا تجعلنا مع القوم الظلمينAnd the companions of the Heights will call out to men whom they recognize by their marks: "Your crowd has availed you nothing, nor your swelling with pride."
ونادي اصحب الاعراف رجالا يعرفونهم بسيميهم قالوا ما اغني عنكم جمعكم وما كنتم تستكبرون"Are these the ones about whom you swore that God would not touch them with any benevolence?"
اهولا الذين اقسمتم لا ينالهم الله برحمه"Enter the Garden; no fear upon you, and you will not grieve."
ادخلوا الجنه لا خوف عليكم ولا انتم تحزنونAnd the companions of the Fire will call out to the companions of the Garden: "Pour upon us some water, or of what God has provided you."
ونادي اصحب النار اصحب الجنه ان افيضوا علينا من الما او مما رزقكم اللهThey will indeed say: "God has forbidden both to those who disown, those who took their Law for distraction and play, and whom the present life deceived.
قالوا ان الله حرمهما علي الكفرين الذين اتخذوا دينهم لهوا ولعبا وغرتهم الحيوه الدنياToday, then, We forget them, as they forgot the meeting of this day of theirs, and because they used to stubbornly reject Our signs."
فاليوم ننسيهم كما نسوا لقا يومهم هذا وما كانوا بايتنا يجحدونWe indeed brought them a Scripture, which We detailed with full knowledge, a guidance and a benevolence for a people who believe.
ولقد جينهم بكتب فصلنه علي علم هدي ورحمه لقوم يومنونDo they await anything but its interpretation?
هل ينظرون الا تاويلهOn the day its interpretation comes, those who had forgotten it before will say: "The messengers of our Guardian did indeed come with the truth; do we have intercessors, that they might intercede for us, or could we be sent back, so that we might act otherwise than we used to act?"
يوم ياتي تاويله يقول الذين نسوه من قبل قد جات رسل ربنا بالحق فهل لنا من شفعا فيشفعوا لنا او نرد فنعمل غير الذي كنا نعملThey will have caused the loss of their Selves, and what they used to invent will have strayed away from them.
قد خسروا انفسهم وضل عنهم ما كانوا يفترونYour Guardian is indeed God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then established Himself upon the Edifice.
ان ربكم الله الذي خلق السموت والارض في سته ايام ثم استوي علي العرشHe covers the day with the night, which pursues it relentlessly; the sun, the moon, and the stars are subjected to His command.
يغشي اليل النهار يطلبه حثيثا والشمس والقمر والنجوم مسخرت بامرهIs it not to Him that creation and the Order belong?
الا له الخلق والامرBlessed is God, Guardian of all beings.
تبارك الله رب العلمينInvoke your Guardian, beseechingly and in secret.
ادعوا ربكم تضرعا وخفيهHe does not love those who cross the limits.
انه لا يحب المعتدينAnd do not sow corruption on the earth after its setting right,
ولا تفسدوا في الارض بعد اصلحهاand invoke Him with fear and hope.
وادعوه خوفا وطمعاThe benevolence of God is indeed near to those who do good.
ان رحمت الله قريب من المحسنينIt is He who sends the winds, which deploy, before His benevolence,
وهو الذي يرسل الريح بشرا بين يدي رحمتهuntil, laden with heavy clouds, We drive them toward a dead land: We then send down water from it, and We bring forth by it every kind of fruit.
حتي اذا اقلت سحابا ثقالا سقنه لبلد ميت فانزلنا به الما فاخرجنا به من كل الثمرتThus will We bring forth the dead — perhaps you will remember.
كذلك نخرج الموتي لعلكم تذكرونAnd the good land, its vegetation comes out with the permission of its Guardian,
والبلد الطيب يخرج نباته باذن ربهwhile that which is bad brings forth only scantily.
والذي خبث لا يخرج الا نكداThus do We diversify the signs for a people who are grateful.
كذلك نصرف الايت لقوم يشكرونWe indeed sent Nuh to his people; he said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him.
لقد ارسلنا نوحا الي قومه فقال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيرهI indeed fear for you the punishment of an immense day."
اني اخاف عليكم عذاب يوم عظيمThe court of his people said: "We see you indeed in manifest error."
قال الملا من قومه انا لنريك في ضلل مبينHe said: "O my people! there is no error in me, but I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings.
قال يقوم ليس بي ضلله ولكني رسول من رب العلمينI convey to you the messages of my Guardian, I advise you sincerely, and I know, from God, what you do not know.
ابلغكم رسلت ربي وانصح لكم واعلم من الله ما لا تعلمونDo you wonder that a reminder from your Guardian should come to you through a man from among yourselves, that he might warn you, that you might guard yourselves, and that, perhaps, benevolence might be shown to you?"
اوعجبتم ان جاكم ذكر من ربكم علي رجل منكم لينذركم ولتتقوا ولعلكم ترحمونThey denied him; We saved him, and those with him in the ship,
فكذبوه فانجينه والذين معه في الفلكand We drowned those who had denied Our signs.
واغرقنا الذين كذبوا بايتناThey were indeed a blind people.
انهم كانوا قوما عمينAnd to the Recidivists [Aad], their brother Hud —
والي عاد اخاهم هوداhe said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him.
قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيرهWill you not then guard yourselves?"
افلا تتقونThe court of his people, those who had disowned, said: "We see you indeed in sheer foolishness, and we think you indeed among the liars."
قال الملا الذين كفروا من قومه انا لنريك في سفاهه وانا لنظنك من الكذبينHe said: "O my people! there is no foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings.
قال يقوم ليس بي سفاهه ولكني رسول من رب العلمينI convey to you the messages of my Guardian, and I am for you a trustworthy advisor.
ابلغكم رسلت ربي وانا لكم ناصح امينDo you wonder that a reminder from your Guardian should come to you through a man from among yourselves, that he might warn you?
اوعجبتم ان جاكم ذكر من ربكم علي رجل منكم لينذركمRemember that He made you successors after the people of Nuh, and gave you an increase of stature in constitution.
واذكروا اذ جعلكم خلفا من بعد قوم نوح وزادكم في الخلق بصطهRemember, then, the blessings of God, perhaps you will succeed."
فاذكروا الا الله لعلكم تفلحونThey said: "Have you come to us so that we may obey God alone, and abandon what our ancestors used to obey? Bring us then what you threaten us with, if you are among the truthful."
قالوا اجيتنا لنعبد الله وحده ونذر ما كان يعبد اباونا فاتنا بما تعدنا ان كنت من الصدقينHe said: "A defilement and an anger from your Guardian have already fallen upon you.
قال قد وقع عليكم من ربكم رجس وغضبDo you argue with me concerning attributes that you and your ancestors have named, for which God has sent down no authority?
اتجدلونني في اسما سميتموها انتم واباوكم ما نزل الله بها من سلطنWait then: I am, with you, among those who wait."
فانتظروا اني معكم من المنتظرينSo We saved him, and those with him, by a benevolence from Us, and We cut off to the last remnant those who had denied Our signs: they were not believers.
فانجينه والذين معه برحمه منا وقطعنا دابر الذين كذبوا بايتنا وما كانوا مومنينAnd to the Depleters [Thamud], their brother Salih —
والي ثمود اخاهم صلحاhe said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him.
قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيرهA clear proof has indeed come to you from your Guardian:
قد جاتكم بينه من ربكمthis is the she-camel of God, a sign for you.
هذه ناقه الله لكم ايهSo leave her to eat on God's earth,
فذروها تاكل في ارض اللهand do her no harm, lest a painful punishment seize you."
ولا تمسوها بسو فياخذكم عذاب اليمAnd remember that He made you successors after the Recidivists [Aad], and settled you on the earth: you take, in its plains, castles, and you carve the mountains into houses.
واذكروا اذ جعلكم خلفا من بعد عاد وبواكم في الارض تتخذون من سهولها قصورا وتنحتون الجبال بيوتاRemember, then, the blessings of God,
فاذكروا الا اللهand do not spread disorder on the earth as corrupters.
ولا تعثوا في الارض مفسدينThe court of his people, those who had swelled with pride, said to those who had been reduced to weakness, to those among them who had believed: "Do you know that Salih is sent by his Guardian?"
قال الملا الذين استكبروا من قومه للذين استضعفوا لمن امن منهم اتعلمون ان صلحا مرسل من ربهThey said: "We indeed believe in what he was sent with."
قالوا انا بما ارسل به مومنونThose who had swelled with pride said: "We, for our part, disown what you believe in."
قال الذين استكبروا انا بالذي امنتم به كفرونThey then hamstrung the she-camel, insolently defied the order of their Guardian,
فعقروا الناقه وعتوا عن امر ربهمand said: "O Salih! bring us what you threaten us with, if you are among the envoys."
وقالوا يصلح ايتنا بما تعدنا ان كنت من المرسلينThen the great tremor seized them, and they found themselves, in their abode, lying, still.
فاخذتهم الرجفه فاصبحوا في دارهم جثمينHe turned away from them and said: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the message of my Guardian, and I advised you,
فتولي عنهم وقال يقوم لقد ابلغتكم رساله ربي ونصحت لكمbut you do not love sincere advisors."
ولكن لا تحبون النصحينAnd Lut, when he said to his people: "Do you commit the indecency that none, among all beings, has committed before you?
ولوطا اذ قال لقومه اتاتون الفحشه ما سبقكم بها من احد من العلمينYou surely approach men with desire, instead of women.
انكم لتاتون الرجال شهوه من دون النساRather, you are a people of the excessive."
بل انتم قوم مسرفونAnd the only answer of his people was to say: "Expel them from your city;
وما كان جواب قومه الا ان قالوا اخرجوهم من قريتكمthey are indeed people who want to be pure."
انهم اناس يتطهرونSo We saved him, and his family, except his wife, who was among those who remained behind.
فانجينه واهله الا امراته كانت من الغبرينAnd We rained down upon them a rain.
وامطرنا عليهم مطراSo look how the end of the severed was.
فانظر كيف كان عقبه المجرمينAnd to Madyan, their brother Shu'ayb —
والي مدين اخاهم شعيباhe said: "O my people! obey God: you have no other deity than Him.
قال يقوم اعبدوا الله ما لكم من اله غيرهA clear proof has indeed come to you from your Guardian.
قد جاتكم بينه من ربكمSo give the measure and the balance faithfully,
فاوفوا الكيل والميزانand do not shortchange people in their things,
ولا تبخسوا الناس اشياهمand do not sow corruption on the earth after its setting right.
ولا تفسدوا في الارض بعد اصلحهاThat is better for you, if you are believers.
ذلكم خير لكم ان كنتم مومنينAnd do not sit in wait on every path, threatening and turning away from the way of God whoever believes in Him, and seeking to make it crooked.
ولا تقعدوا بكل صرط توعدون وتصدون عن سبيل الله من امن به وتبغونها عوجاAnd remember that you were few, and He multiplied you.
واذكروا اذ كنتم قليلا فكثركمAnd look how the end of the corrupters was.
وانظروا كيف كان عقبه المفسدينAnd if a group among you has believed in what I was sent with, and another group has not believed, be patient then until God judges between us:
وان كان طايفه منكم امنوا بالذي ارسلت به وطايفه لم يومنوا فاصبروا حتي يحكم الله بينناHe is the best of judges.
وهو خير الحكمينThe court of his people, those who had swelled with pride, said: "We will certainly expel you from our city, O Shu'ayb, you and those who have believed with you, unless you return to our doctrine."
قال الملا الذين استكبروا من قومه لنخرجنك يشعيب والذين امنوا معك من قريتنا او لتعودن في ملتناHe said: "Even if we were averse to it?
قال اولو كنا كرهينWe would indeed have invented a lie against God, if we returned to your doctrine after God has saved us from it.
قد افترينا علي الله كذبا ان عدنا في ملتكم بعد اذ نجينا الله منهاIt is not for us to return to it, unless God, our Guardian, wills it.
وما يكون لنا ان نعود فيها الا ان يشا الله ربناOur Guardian encompasses all things in His knowledge.
وسع ربنا كل شي علماIt is upon God that we rely.
علي الله توكلناOur Guardian, open [a passage] between us and our people, in truth:
ربنا افتح بيننا وبين قومنا بالحقYou are the best of those who decide."
وانت خير الفتحينAnd the court of his people, those who disowned, said: "If you follow Shu'ayb, you will then surely be losers."
وقال الملا الذين كفروا من قومه لين اتبعتم شعيبا انكم اذا لخسرونThen the great tremor seized them, and they found themselves, in their abode, lying, still.
فاخذتهم الرجفه فاصبحوا في دارهم جثمينThose who had denied Shu'ayb became as if they had never dwelt there.
الذين كذبوا شعيبا كان لم يغنوا فيهاThose who had denied Shu'ayb, they were the losers.
الذين كذبوا شعيبا كانوا هم الخسرينHe turned away from them and said: "O my people! I did indeed convey to you the messages of my Guardian, and I advised you.
فتولي عنهم وقال يقوم لقد ابلغتكم رسلت ربي ونصحت لكمHow then should I lament for a people who disown?"
فكيف اسي علي قوم كفرينWe have not sent, into any city, a prophet without seizing its inhabitants with adversity and hardship, that they might beseech.
وما ارسلنا في قريه من نبي الا اخذنا اهلها بالباسا والضرا لعلهم يضرعونThen We replaced evil with good, until they prospered
ثم بدلنا مكان السييه الحسنه حتي عفواand said: "Hardship and happiness already touched our ancestors"; We then seized them by surprise, without their sensing it.
وقالوا قد مس ابانا الضرا والسرا فاخذنهم بغته وهم لا يشعرونAnd had the inhabitants of the cities believed and guarded themselves, We would indeed have opened upon them blessings from the sky and the earth;
ولو ان اهل القري امنوا واتقوا لفتحنا عليهم بركت من السما والارضbut they denied, and We then seized them for what they used to earn.
ولكن كذبوا فاخذنهم بما كانوا يكسبونAre the inhabitants of the cities then secure that Our rigor should come upon them by night, while they sleep? Or are the inhabitants of the cities secure that Our rigor should come upon them in broad daylight, while they play?
افامن اهل القري ان ياتيهم باسنا بيتا وهم نايمون اوامن اهل القري ان ياتيهم باسنا ضحي وهم يلعبونDo they then feel secure from God's plot?
افامنوا مكر اللهNone feels secure from God's plot, except the people of the losers.
فلا يامن مكر الله الا القوم الخسرونHas it not become clearly apparent to those who inherit the earth after its [past] inhabitants, that, had We willed, We would strike them for their offenses,
اولم يهد للذين يرثون الارض من بعد اهلها ان لو نشا اصبنهم بذنوبهمand We seal their cores, so that they do not hear?
ونطبع علي قلوبهم فهم لا يسمعونThose are the cities of which We relate to you certain information.
تلك القري نقص عليك من انبايهاTheir messengers had indeed come to them with clear proofs, but they were not disposed to believe what they had first denied.
ولقد جاتهم رسلهم بالبينت فما كانوا ليومنوا بما كذبوا من قبلThus does God seal the cores of those who disown.
كذلك يطبع الله علي قلوب الكفرينAnd We found, in most of them, no pact kept;
وما وجدنا لاكثرهم من عهدWe indeed found most of them to be oversteppers.
وان وجدنا اكثرهم لفسقينThen We raised up, after them, Moussa with Our signs, to Fir'awn and his court, but they were unjust toward them.
ثم بعثنا من بعدهم موسي بايتنا الي فرعون وملايه فظلموا بهاSo look how the end of the corrupters was.
فانظر كيف كان عقبه المفسدينMoussa said: "O Fir'awn! I am a messenger from the Guardian of all beings, in truth,
وقال موسي يفرعون اني رسول من رب العلمين حقيقbound to say about God nothing but the truth.
علي ان لا اقول علي الله الا الحقI have come to you with a clear proof from your Guardian;
قد جيتكم ببينه من ربكمso let the Sons of Israel go with me."
فارسل معي بني اسريلHe said: "If you have come with a sign, bring it then, if you are among the truthful."
قال ان كنت جيت بايه فات بها ان كنت من الصدقينHe then threw down his staff, and behold, it was a manifest serpent; and he drew out his hand, and behold, it was white to those who looked.
فالقي عصاه فاذا هي ثعبان مبين ونزع يده فاذا هي بيضا للنظرينThe court of Fir'awn's people said: "This is surely a knowledgeable illusion-maker, who wants to bring you out of your land."
قال الملا من قوم فرعون ان هذا لسحر عليم يريد ان يخرجكم من ارضكم"What then do you advise?"
فماذا تامرونThey said: "Put him off, him and his brother, and send into the capitals gatherers, who will bring you every knowledgeable illusion-maker."
قالوا ارجه واخاه وارسل في المداين حشرين ياتوك بكل سحر عليمAnd the illusion-makers came to Fir'awn; they said: "Will we surely have a reward, if we are the victors?"
وجا السحره فرعون قالوا ان لنا لاجرا ان كنا نحن الغلبينHe said: "Yes, and you will surely be among those brought near."
قال نعم وانكم لمن المقربينThey said: "O Moussa! either you throw, or we will be the ones who throw."
قالوا يموسي اما ان تلقي واما ان نكون نحن الملقينHe said: "Throw."
قال القواWhen they had thrown, they bewitched the eyes of the people by illusion, and filled them with reverence,
فلما القوا سحروا اعين الناس واسترهبوهمand they brought an immense illusion.
وجاو بسحر عظيمAnd We revealed to Moussa: "Throw your staff";
واوحينا الي موسي ان الق عصاكand behold, it swallowed up what they distorted.
فاذا هي تلقف ما يافكونThe truth then came to pass, and what they were doing proved vain.
فوقع الحق وبطل ما كانوا يعملونThey were defeated, right there, and went away diminished.
فغلبوا هنالك وانقلبوا صغرينAnd the illusion-makers threw themselves down, prostrate.
والقي السحره سجدينThey said: "We believe in the Guardian of all beings, the Guardian of Moussa and Harun."
قالوا امنا برب العلمين رب موسي وهرونFir'awn said: "Have you believed in him before I permitted you? This is surely a plot you plotted in the Capital, so as to drive out its inhabitants; you will soon know.
قال فرعون امنتم به قبل ان اذن لكم ان هذا لمكر مكرتموه في المدينه لتخرجوا منها اهلها فسوف تعلمونI will certainly cut off your hands and feet, on opposite sides, then I will certainly crucify you all together."
لاقطعن ايديكم وارجلكم من خلف ثم لاصلبنكم اجمعينThey said: "It is to our Guardian that we return.
قالوا انا الي ربنا منقلبونAnd you reproach us for nothing, except that we believed in the signs of our Guardian, once they came to us.
وما تنقم منا الا ان امنا بايت ربنا لما جاتناOur Guardian, pour patience upon us, and keep us faithfully as those true to God alone."
ربنا افرغ علينا صبرا وتوفنا مسلمينAnd the court of Fir'awn's people said: "Will you leave Moussa and his people to spread corruption on the earth, and to abandon you and your deities?"
وقال الملا من قوم فرعون اتذر موسي وقومه ليفسدوا في الارض ويذرك والهتكHe said: "We will massacre their sons and violate the modesty of their women; we hold indeed the upper hand over them."
قال سنقتل ابناهم ونستحي نساهم وانا فوقهم قهرونMoussa said to his people: "Seek help in God, and be patient;
قال موسي لقومه استعينوا بالله واصبرواthe earth belongs to God; He gives it as inheritance to whom He wills among His obedient ones,
ان الارض لله يورثها من يشا من عبادهand the [favorable] outcome is for those who guard themselves."
والعقبه للمتقينThey said: "We were troubled before you came to us, and after you came to us."
قالوا اوذينا من قبل ان تاتينا ومن بعد ما جيتناHe said: "It may be that your Guardian will annihilate your enemy and establish you as successors on the earth, so as to look at how you would act."
قال عسي ربكم ان يهلك عدوكم ويستخلفكم في الارض فينظر كيف تعملونAnd We indeed seized the clan of Fir'awn with years [of famine] and a diminution of fruits, that they might remember.
ولقد اخذنا ال فرعون بالسنين ونقص من الثمرت لعلهم يذكرونWhen happiness comes to them, they say: "This belongs to us";
فاذا جاتهم الحسنه قالوا لنا هذهand if misfortune touches them, they attribute it to an ill omen from Moussa and those with him.
وان تصبهم سييه يطيروا بموسي ومن معهIs it not that in reality their omen is with God?
الا انما طيرهم عند اللهBut most of them do not know.
ولكن اكثرهم لا يعلمونAnd they said: "Whatever sign you bring us, to bewitch us with it, we will not believe you."
وقالوا مهما تاتنا به من ايه لتسحرنا بها فما نحن لك بمومنينWe then sent upon them the flood, the locusts, the lice, the frogs, and the blood, detailed signs; but they swelled with pride and were a severed people.
فارسلنا عليهم الطوفان والجراد والقمل والضفادع والدم ايت مفصلت فاستكبروا وكانوا قوما مجرمينAnd when the defilement fell upon them, they said: "O Moussa! invoke for us your Guardian, by the pact He has made with you; if you remove the defilement from us, we will certainly give you credit, and we will certainly let the Sons of Israel go with you."
ولما وقع عليهم الرجز قالوا يموسي ادع لنا ربك بما عهد عندك لين كشفت عنا الرجز لنومنن لك ولنرسلن معك بني اسريلBut when We had removed the defilement from them until a term they were to reach, there they were, breaking their engagement.
فلما كشفنا عنهم الرجز الي اجل هم بلغوه اذا هم ينكثونWe then took vengeance upon them, and We drowned them in the deep, for having denied Our signs and remained heedless of them.
فانتقمنا منهم فاغرقنهم في اليم بانهم كذبوا بايتنا وكانوا عنها غفلينAnd We made the people who had been reduced to weakness inherit the easts and the wests of the land which We had blessed.
واورثنا القوم الذين كانوا يستضعفون مشرق الارض ومغربها التي بركنا فيهاAnd the beautiful word of your Guardian was fulfilled toward the Sons of Israel, for having been patient;
وتمت كلمت ربك الحسني علي بني اسريل بما صبرواand We destroyed what Fir'awn and his people were doing, and what they were building.
ودمرنا ما كان يصنع فرعون وقومه وما كانوا يعرشونAnd We made the Sons of Israel cross the sea; they came upon a people posted before idols of their own.
وجوزنا ببني اسريل البحر فاتوا علي قوم يعكفون علي اصنام لهمThey said: "O Moussa! make for us a deity, as they have deities."
قالوا يموسي اجعل لنا الها كما لهم الههHe said: "You are indeed an ignorant people.
قال انكم قوم تجهلونWhat these practice is doomed to ruin,
ان هولا متبر ما هم فيهand vain is what they were doing."
وبطل ما كانوا يعملونHe said: "Should I seek for you a deity other than God, while He has favored you above all beings?"
قال اغير الله ابغيكم الها وهو فضلكم علي العلمينAnd remember when We saved you from the clan of Fir'awn, who inflicted upon you the worst of punishments, massacring your sons and violating the modesty of your women —
واذ انجينكم من ال فرعون يسومونكم سو العذاب يقتلون ابناكم ويستحيون نساكمand there was in that, for you, an immense testing from your Guardian.
وفي ذلكم بلا من ربكم عظيمWe fixed for Moussa an appointment of thirty nights, which We completed with ten: thus the appointed meeting set by his Guardian was fulfilled, in forty nights.
ووعدنا موسي ثلثين ليله واتممنها بعشر فتم ميقت ربه اربعين ليلهAnd Moussa said to his brother Harun: "Take my place among my people, act rightly, and do not follow the way of those who sow corruption."
وقال موسي لاخيه هرون اخلفني في قومي واصلح ولا تتبع سبيل المفسدينAnd when Moussa came to Our appointed meeting, and his Guardian spoke to him, he said: "My Guardian, show Yourself to me, that I may look at You."
ولما جا موسي لميقتنا وكلمه ربه قال رب ارني انظر اليكHe said: "You will not see Me, but look at the mountain: if it remains in place, then you will see Me."
قال لن تريني ولكن انظر الي الجبل فان استقر مكانه فسوف ترينيWhen his Guardian manifested Himself to the mountain, He made it collapse under pressure, and Moussa fell thunderstruck.
فلما تجلي ربه للجبل جعله دكا وخر موسي صعقاWhen he came to, he said: "Glory be to You! I turn back to You, and I am the first of the believers."
فلما افاق قال سبحنك تبت اليك وانا اول المومنينHe said: "O Moussa! I have chosen you among mankind for My messages and for My word; take, then, what I have given you, and be among the grateful."
قال يموسي اني اصطفيتك علي الناس برسلتي وبكلمي فخذ ما اتيتك وكن من الشكرينAnd We wrote for him, on the Tablets, an admonition concerning all things, and a detail of all things.
وكتبنا له في الالواح من كل شي موعظه وتفصيلا لكل شيTake them, then, with strength, and order your people to take what is best in them.
فخذها بقوه وامر قومك ياخذوا باحسنهاI will show you the abode of the oversteppers.
ساوريكم دار الفسقينI will turn away from My signs those who act proudly on the earth without right; even if they saw every sign, they would not believe in it, and if they saw the way of rectitude, they would not take it as a way, while, if they saw the way of misguidance, they would take it as a way.
ساصرف عن ايتي الذين يتكبرون في الارض بغير الحق وان يروا كل ايه لا يومنوا بها وان يروا سبيل الرشد لا يتخذوه سبيلا وان يروا سبيل الغي يتخذوه سبيلاThat is because they denied Our signs and remained heedless of them.
ذلك بانهم كذبوا بايتنا وكانوا عنها غفلينAnd those who denied Our signs and the meeting of the last life, their works have collapsed; are they recompensed except according to what they used to do?
والذين كذبوا بايتنا ولقا الاخره حبطت اعملهم هل يجزون الا ما كانوا يعملونAnd the people of Moussa took, after him, from their ornaments, a calf, a body that lowed.
واتخذ قوم موسي من بعده من حليهم عجلا جسدا له خوارDid they not see that it did not speak to them and did not guide them to any way?
الم يروا انه لا يكلمهم ولا يهديهم سبيلاThey took it [as a deity], and were wrongdoers.
اتخذوه وكانوا ظلمينAnd when they were struck with regret, seeing that they had gone astray, they said: "If our Guardian does not have benevolence on us and does not forgive us, we will certainly be among the losers."
ولما سقط في ايديهم وراوا انهم قد ضلوا قالوا لين لم يرحمنا ربنا ويغفر لنا لنكونن من الخسرينWhen Moussa returned to his people, angry, bitter, he said: "How evil is what you have done in my place, after me!
ولما رجع موسي الي قومه غضبن اسفا قال بيسما خلفتموني من بعديDid you want to hasten the command of your Guardian?"
اعجلتم امر ربكمAnd he threw down the Tablets, and seized his brother by the head, dragging him toward himself.
والقي الالواح واخذ براس اخيه يجره اليهHe said: "Son of my mother! the people reduced me to weakness, and almost killed me; do not, then, let the enemies gloat over me, and do not place me with the wrongdoing people."
قال ابن ام ان القوم استضعفوني وكادوا يقتلونني فلا تشمت بي الاعدا ولا تجعلني مع القوم الظلمينHe said: "My Guardian, forgive me, and my brother, and admit us into Your benevolence;
قال رب اغفر لي ولاخي وادخلنا في رحمتكYou are the most benevolent of the benevolent."
وانت ارحم الرحمينThose who took the calf [as a deity], an anger from their Guardian will reach them, as well as a humiliation in the present life.
ان الذين اتخذوا العجل سينالهم غضب من ربهم وذله في الحيوه الدنياThus do We recompense the inventors of lies.
وكذلك نجزي المفترينAnd those who committed evil deeds, then repented after that and believed — your Guardian, after that, is surely Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
والذين عملوا السيات ثم تابوا من بعدها وامنوا ان ربك من بعدها لغفور رحيمAnd when Moussa's anger had subsided, he took the Tablets; in their inscription, there was guidance and benevolence for those who revere their Guardian.
ولما سكت عن موسي الغضب اخذ الالواح وفي نسختها هدي ورحمه للذين هم لربهم يرهبونAnd Moussa chose, from among his people, seventy men for Our appointed meeting.
واختار موسي قومه سبعين رجلا لميقتناWhen the great tremor had seized them, he said: "My Guardian, had You willed, You would have annihilated them before, and me as well.
فلما اخذتهم الرجفه قال رب لو شيت اهلكتهم من قبل واييWould You annihilate us for what the foolish among us have done?
اتهلكنا بما فعل السفها مناThis is nothing but Your trial, by which You lead astray whom You will, and guide whom You will.
ان هي الا فتنتك تضل بها من تشا وتهدي من تشاYou are our protector; forgive us, then, and have benevolence on us; You are the best of those who forgive.
انت ولينا فاغفر لنا وارحمنا وانت خير الغفرينAnd inscribe for us, in the present life, a good, as well as in the last life;
واكتب لنا في هذه الدنيا حسنه وفي الاخرهwe return to You."
انا هدنا اليكHe said: "My punishment, I strike with it whom I will,
قال عذابي اصيب به من اشاand My benevolence embraces all things.
ورحمتي وسعت كل شيI will inscribe it, then, for those who guard themselves, give the purifying alms, and who believe in Our signs, those who follow the messenger, the prophet without a prior Scripture, whom they find written down with them in the Tawrah and the Injil, who orders them what is recognized and forbids them what is disavowed, makes lawful for them the good things and forbids them the vile things, and removes from them their burden and the shackles that were upon them.
فساكتبها للذين يتقون ويوتون الزكوه والذين هم بايتنا يومنون الذين يتبعون الرسول النبي الامي الذي يجدونه مكتوبا عندهم في التوريه والانجيل يامرهم بالمعروف وينهيهم عن المنكر ويحل لهم الطيبت ويحرم عليهم الخبيث ويضع عنهم اصرهم والاغلل التي كانت عليهمThose who believe in him, support him, help him, and follow the light sent down with him — those are the ones who succeed.
فالذين امنوا به وعزروه ونصروه واتبعوا النور الذي انزل معه اوليك هم المفلحونSay: "O mankind! I am the messenger of God to all of you, [God] to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth.
قل يايها الناس اني رسول الله اليكم جميعا الذي له ملك السموت والارضThere is no deity but Him.
لا اله الا هوHe gives life and causes death.
يحي ويميتSo believe in God and His messenger, the prophet without a prior Scripture, who believes in God and His words,
فامنوا بالله ورسوله النبي الامي الذي يومن بالله وكلمتهand follow him, perhaps you will be rightly guided."
واتبعوه لعلكم تهتدونAnd among the people of Moussa, there is a community that guides according to the truth and that, by it, acts with justice.
ومن قوم موسي امه يهدون بالحق وبه يعدلونAnd We divided them into twelve tribes, into communities,
وقطعنهم اثنتي عشره اسباطا امماand We revealed to Moussa, when his people asked him for drink: "Strike the rock with your staff";
واوحينا الي موسي اذ استسقيه قومه ان اضرب بعصاك الحجرand behold, twelve springs gushed forth from it:
فانبجست منه اثنتا عشره عيناeach group of people knew its drinking place.
قد علم كل اناس مشربهمAnd We spread over them the shade of the cloud, and We sent down upon them manna and quails:
وظللنا عليهم الغمم وانزلنا عليهم المن والسلوي"Eat of the good things We have provided you."
كلوا من طيبت ما رزقنكمThey did not wrong Us,
وما ظلموناbut it was to themselves that they did wrong.
ولكن كانوا انفسهم يظلمونAnd remember when it was said to them: "Dwell in this city, eat from it wherever you wish, say: Relieve us [of our faults], and enter by the gate bowing down: We will forgive you your faults.
واذ قيل لهم اسكنوا هذه القريه وكلوا منها حيث شيتم وقولوا حطه وادخلوا الباب سجدا نغفر لكم خطيتكمWe will increase [the reward] of those who do good."
سنزيد المحسنينBut those among them who were unjust substituted a saying other than what had been said to them; We then sent down upon them a defilement from the sky, for having been unjust.
فبدل الذين ظلموا منهم قولا غير الذي قيل لهم فارسلنا عليهم رجزا من السما بما كانوا يظلمونAnd ask them about the city that was near the sea: when they crossed the limits by practicing as-sabt [the act of rest/inaction], their fish came to them, breaking the surface; and on the day they did not practice as-sabt, they did not come to them.
وسلهم عن القريه التي كانت حاضره البحر اذ يعدون في السبت اذ تاتيهم حيتانهم يوم سبتهم شرعا ويوم لا يسبتون لا تاتيهمThus did We test them, for having overstepped.
كذلك نبلوهم بما كانوا يفسقونAnd remember when a community among them said: "Why do you exhort a people whom God is going to annihilate, or punish with a severe punishment?"
واذ قالت امه منهم لم تعظون قوما الله مهلكهم او معذبهم عذابا شديداThey said: "For an excuse before your Guardian, and perhaps they will guard themselves."
قالوا معذره الي ربكم ولعلهم يتقونWhen they forgot what they had been reminded of, We saved those who forbade evil, and We seized the unjust with a harsh punishment, for having overstepped.
فلما نسوا ما ذكروا به انجينا الذين ينهون عن السو واخذنا الذين ظلموا بعذاب بيس بما كانوا يفسقونThen, when they insolently defied what had been forbidden them, We said to them: "Be apes, rejected."
فلما عتوا عن ما نهوا عنه قلنا لهم كونوا قرده خسينAnd remember when your Guardian proclaimed that He would certainly raise up against them, until the Day of Appearance, one who would inflict upon them the worst of punishments.
واذ تاذن ربك ليبعثن عليهم الي يوم القيمه من يسومهم سو العذابYour Guardian is surely swift in sanction,
ان ربك لسريع العقابand He is surely Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
وانه لغفور رحيمAnd We divided them on the earth into communities:
وقطعنهم في الارض امماthere are among them the righteous, and there are those who are less so.
منهم الصلحون ومنهم دون ذلكAnd We tested them with good things and bad things, that they might return.
وبلونهم بالحسنت والسيات لعلهم يرجعونThen a posterity succeeded them, who inherited the Scripture, taking the fleeting goods of this lower world, and saying: "It will be forgiven us"; and if a similar good comes to them again, they take it [just the same].
فخلف من بعدهم خلف ورثوا الكتب ياخذون عرض هذا الادني ويقولون سيغفر لنا وان ياتهم عرض مثله ياخذوهWas not the solemn engagement of the Scripture taken from them, that they would say about God nothing but the truth?
الم يوخذ عليهم ميثق الكتب ان لا يقولوا علي الله الا الحقAnd they have studied what is in it.
ودرسوا ما فيهBut the last abode is better for those who guard themselves.
والدار الاخره خير للذين يتقونWill you not then reason?
افلا تعقلونAnd those who hold firmly to the Scripture and maintain the Contact — We do not let the reward of those who set things right be lost.
والذين يمسكون بالكتب واقاموا الصلوه انا لا نضيع اجر المصلحينAnd recall, when We tore the mountain out above them, as though it were a canopy, and they thought it was going to fall upon them:
واذ نتقنا الجبل فوقهم كانه ظله وظنوا انه واقع بهم"Take with strength what We have given you, and remember what is in it, perhaps you will guard yourselves."
خذوا ما اتينكم بقوه واذكروا ما فيه لعلكم تتقونAnd remember when your Guardian drew forth from the children of Adam their descendants after them, and made them bear witness concerning themselves: "Am I not your Guardian?" They said: "Yes indeed, we bear witness!"
واذ اخذ ربك من بني ادم من ظهورهم ذريتهم واشهدهم علي انفسهم الست بربكم قالوا بلي[This,] lest you say, on the Day of Appearance: "We were indeed heedless of this", or that you say: "It was our ancestors who, before, associated, and we were only descendants after them.
شهدنا ان تقولوا يوم القيمه انا كنا عن هذا غفلين او تقولوا انما اشرك اباونا من قبل وكنا ذريه من بعدهمWould You annihilate us for what the workers of falsehood have done?"
افتهلكنا بما فعل المبطلونThus do We detail the signs, and perhaps they will return.
وكذلك نفصل الايت ولعلهم يرجعونAnd recite to them the information concerning him to whom We gave Our signs, and who divested himself of them, so that the Diverter pursued him, and he was among the misled.
واتل عليهم نبا الذي اتينه ايتنا فانسلخ منها فاتبعه الشيطن فكان من الغاوينHad We willed, We would have elevated him by these; but he clung to the earth and followed his emotion.
ولو شينا لرفعنه بها ولكنه اخلد الي الارض واتبع هويهHis likeness is that of the dog: if you burden it, it pants, and if you leave it, it pants [still].
فمثله كمثل الكلب ان تحمل عليه يلهث او تتركه يلهثThat is the likeness of the people who denied Our signs.
ذلك مثل القوم الذين كذبوا بايتناRelate, then, the account, perhaps they will reflect.
فاقصص القصص لعلهم يتفكرونEvil is the likeness of the people who denied Our signs, and who wronged themselves.
سا مثلا القوم الذين كذبوا بايتنا وانفسهم كانوا يظلمونWhoever God guides, that is the one who lets himself be guided;
من يهد الله فهو المهتديand whoever He leads astray, those are the losers.
ومن يضلل فاوليك هم الخسرونAnd We have scattered, for Jahannam, many of the Occulted and humans;
ولقد ذرانا لجهنم كثيرا من الجن والانسthey have cores with which they do not understand,
لهم قلوب لا يفقهون بهاthey have eyes with which they do not see clearly,
ولهم اعين لا يبصرون بهاand they have ears with which they do not hear.
ولهم اذان لا يسمعون بهاThose are the ones who are like cattle — no, they are even more astray.
اوليك كالانعم بل هم اضلThose are the heedless.
اوليك هم الغفلونAnd to God belong the most beautiful attributes; invoke Him, then, by them,
ولله الاسما الحسني فادعوه بهاand leave those who blaspheme [by distorting] His attributes.
وذروا الذين يلحدون في اسميهThey will be recompensed according to what they used to do.
سيجزون ما كانوا يعملونAnd among those We have created, there is a community that guides according to the truth and that, by it, acts with justice.
وممن خلقنا امه يهدون بالحق وبه يعدلونAnd those who deny Our signs, We will gradually lead them [to ruin], from where they do not know, and I grant them a delay.
والذين كذبوا بايتنا سنستدرجهم من حيث لا يعلمون واملي لهمMy scheme is indeed solid.
ان كيدي متينDo they not then reflect?
اولم يتفكرواThere is no derangement in their companion.
ما بصاحبهم من جنهHe is nothing but a manifest warner.
ان هو الا نذير مبينHave they not looked into the sovereign dominion of the heavens and the earth, and into everything God has created, and [considered] that it may be that their term has already drawn near?
اولم ينظروا في ملكوت السموت والارض وما خلق الله من شي وان عسي ان يكون قد اقترب اجلهمIn what discourse, after this one, will they then believe?
فباي حديث بعده يومنونWhoever God leads astray, no guide for him,
من يضلل الله فلا هادي لهand He leaves them, in their excess, to wander blindly.
ويذرهم في طغينهم يعمهونThey ask you about the Hour: when will it drop anchor?
يسلونك عن الساعه ايان مرسيهاSay: "Knowledge of it is only with my Guardian;
قل انما علمها عند ربيnone but Him will unveil it in its time.
لا يجليها لوقتها الا هوIt weighs heavily in the heavens and on the earth;
ثقلت في السموت والارضit will come to you only unexpectedly."
لا تاتيكم الا بغتهThey ask you as if you were well informed about it.
يسلونك كانك حفي عنهاSay: "Knowledge of it is only with God,
قل انما علمها عند اللهbut most people do not know."
ولكن اكثر الناس لا يعلمونSay: "I hold, for myself, neither benefit nor harm, except what God wills.
قل لا املك لنفسي نفعا ولا ضرا الا ما شا اللهAnd if I knew what escapes the senses, I would indeed have amassed abundant good things,
ولو كنت اعلم الغيب لاستكثرت من الخيرand evil would not have touched me.
وما مسني السوI am nothing but a warner,
ان انا الا نذيرand a bearer of good tidings for a people who believe."
وبشير لقوم يومنونIt is He who created you from a single Self, and made from it its spouse, so that he might find rest with it.
هو الذي خلقكم من نفس وحده وجعل منها زوجها ليسكن اليهاAnd when he had covered her, she carried a light burden, with which she could move about;
فلما تغشيها حملت حملا خفيفا فمرت بهand when she became heavy with it, they both invoked God, their Guardian: "If You give us a righteous [child], we will certainly be among the grateful."
فلما اثقلت دعوا الله ربهما لين اتيتنا صلحا لنكونن من الشكرينBut when He had given them a righteous [child], they attributed to Him associates in what He had given them.
فلما اتيهما صلحا جعلا له شركا فيما اتيهماBut God is far above what they associate with Him.
فتعلي الله عما يشركونDo they associate with Him what creates nothing, and is [itself] created,
ايشركون ما لا يخلق شيا وهم يخلقونand can neither help them, nor help itself?
ولا يستطيعون لهم نصرا ولا انفسهم ينصرونAnd if you call them to guidance, they do not follow you.
وان تدعوهم الي الهدي لا يتبعوكمIt is the same to you, whether you call them, or remain silent.
سوا عليكم ادعوتموهم ام انتم صمتونThose you invoke besides God are obedient ones like yourselves;
ان الذين تدعون من دون الله عباد امثالكمinvoke them, then, and let them answer you, if you are truthful.
فادعوهم فليستجيبوا لكم ان كنتم صدقينDo they have feet with which they walk?
الهم ارجل يمشون بهاOr do they have hands with which they seize?
ام لهم ايد يبطشون بهاOr do they have eyes with which they see clearly?
ام لهم اعين يبصرون بهاOr do they have ears with which they hear?
ام لهم اذان يسمعون بهاSay: "Invoke your associates, then scheme against me, and grant me no respite.
قل ادعوا شركاكم ثم كيدون فلا تنظرونMy protector is God, who sent down the Scripture,
ان ولي الله الذي نزل الكتبand it is He who protects the righteous.
وهو يتولي الصلحينAnd those you invoke besides Him can neither help you, nor help themselves."
والذين تدعون من دونه لا يستطيعون نصركم ولا انفسهم ينصرونAnd if you call them to guidance, they do not hear;
وان تدعوهم الي الهدي لا يسمعواand you see them looking at you, without seeing clearly.
وتريهم ينظرون اليك وهم لا يبصرونTake what is easy,
خذ العفوorder what is recognized,
وامر بالعرفand turn away from the ignorant.
واعرض عن الجهلينAnd if an incitement from the Diverter incites you [to evil], seek refuge in God.
واما ينزغنك من الشيطن نزغ فاستعذ باللهHe is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
انه سميع عليمThose who guard themselves, when a procession [of suggestions] from the Diverter touches them, take heed, and there they are, clear-sighted;
ان الذين اتقوا اذا مسهم طيف من الشيطن تذكروا فاذا هم مبصرونwhile their brothers [the disowners] draw them ever further into misguidance,
واخونهم يمدونهم في الغيthen they do not stop.
ثم لا يقصرونAnd when you do not bring them a sign, they say: "Why did you not choose it yourself?"
واذا لم تاتهم بايه قالوا لولا اجتبيتهاSay: "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Guardian;
قل انما اتبع ما يوحي الي من ربيthese are insights from your Guardian, a guidance and a benevolence for a people who believe."
هذا بصاير من ربكم وهدي ورحمه لقوم يومنونAnd when this Recitation is recited, listen to it and be silent, perhaps benevolence will be shown to you.
واذا قري القران فاستمعوا له وانصتوا لعلكم ترحمونAnd remember your Guardian, within yourself, beseechingly and with fear, without speaking aloud in saying, in the morning and in the evening, and do not be among the heedless.
واذكر ربك في نفسك تضرعا وخيفه ودون الجهر من القول بالغدو والاصال ولا تكن من الغفلينThose who are with your Guardian do not swell with pride against obeying Him, they glorify Him, and it is before Him that they prostrate.
ان الذين عند ربك لا يستكبرون عن عبادته ويسبحونه وله يسجدون
