۞

At-Tawba

  • Exoneration from obligation, from God and His Messenger, toward those of the associators with whom you had made a pact.i 1
  • So move about freely in the land for four months,i 2
  • and know that you cannot render God powerless, and that God covers with disgrace those who deny-disown. 2
  • And a proclamation from God and His Messenger to mankind, on the day of the Great Convergence of the Hajj: God is exonerated from obligation toward the associators, and so is His Messenger.i 3
  • So if you cease [your transgression], that is better for you;i 3
  • but if you turn away, know that you cannot render God powerless. 3
  • Announce to those who have denied-disowned a painful punishment — except those of the associators with whom you made a pact, and who then did not fail you in anything nor supported anyone against you: fulfill your pact toward them until its term. 4
  • God loves those who guard themselves. 4
  • When the inviolable months have passed, fight the associators wherever you find them; seize them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every point of observation.i 5
  • But if they cease [their transgression], maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms, then leave their way clear.i 5
  • God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 5
  • And if one of the associators asks you for protection, protect him, until he hears the word of God, then convey him to his place of safety. 6
  • That is because they are a people who do not know. 6
  • How could there be, for the associators, a pact with God and with His Messenger — except those with whom you made a pact near the inviolable place of prostration? As long as they stand straight with you, stand straight with them. 7
  • God loves those who guard themselves. 7
  • How, then? If they gained the upper hand over you, they would respect toward you neither kinship nor covenant. 8
  • They satisfy you with their mouths, while their cores refuse; and most of them are oversteppers. 8
  • They sold the signs of God for a small price, and they turned away from His path. 9
  • How evil is what they used to do! 9
  • They respect, toward a believer, neither kinship nor covenant. 10
  • Those are the transgressors. 10
  • If they turn back [to God], maintain the Contact, and give the purifying alms, then they are your brothers in the Law. 11
  • And thus do We detail the signs for a people who know. 11
  • But if they break their oaths after their engagement, and attack your Law, then fight the leaders of denial-disowning, 12
  • for their oaths are not valid — perhaps they will cease. 12
  • Will you then not fight a people who broke their oaths, who plotted to expel the messenger, and who attacked you first? Would you fear them? 13
  • God is more worthy that you should fear Him, if you are believers. 13
  • Fight them: God will punish them by your hands, cover them with disgrace, grant you victory over them, heal the chests of a believing people, and remove the rage of their cores. 15
  • And God turns with clemency toward whom He wills. 15
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 15
  • Or did you think that you would be left, without God having yet distinguished those among you who have striven and have not taken, besides God, His Messenger, and the believers, any close confidant?i 16
  • God is well informed of what you do. 16
  • It is not for the associators to populate the places of prostration of God, bearing witness against themselves of denial-disowning. 17
  • Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, and who abide eternally in the Fire. 17
  • Only he populates the places of prostration of God who has believed in God and the Last Day, has maintained the Contact, given the purifying alms, and feared none but God alone — those, it may be, are among the rightly-guided. 18
  • Would you make the watering of the arrival and the maintenance of the inviolable place of prostration equivalent to one who has believed in God and the Last Day, and has striven in the way of God?i 19
  • They are not equal in the sight of God. 19
  • And God does not guide the unjust people. 19
  • Those who have believed, emigrated, and striven in the way of God with their possessions and their Selves have a greater rank with God, 20
  • and those are the ones who triumph. 20
  • Their Guardian announces to them a benevolence from Himself, a good pleasure, and gardens where they will have a lasting blessing, abiding therein eternally, forever.i 22
  • With God there is an immense reward.i 22
  • O you who have believed! do not take your fathers and your brothers as allies, if they prefer denial-disowning to faith. 23
  • And whoever among you takes them as allies, those are the unjust. 23
  • Say: "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your clan, the wealth you have acquired, a trade whose decline you fear, and dwellings that please you, are dearer to you than God, His Messenger, and striving in His way, then wait, until God brings His command." 24
  • And God does not guide the people of the oversteppers. 24
  • God indeed helped you in many places, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it availed you nothing, and the earth, despite its vastness, became narrow for you; then you turned your backs, fleeing. 25
  • Then God sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and sent down soldiers you did not see, and He punished those who had denied-disowned. 26
  • Such is the reward of those who deny-disown. 26
  • Then God turns with clemency, after that, toward whom He wills. 27
  • God is Most-Forgiving, full of benevolence. 27
  • O you who have believed! the associators are nothing but impurity: let them not approach the inviolable place of prostration, after this year of theirs. 28
  • And if you fear poverty, God will enrich you from His favor, if He wills. 28
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 28
  • Fight those who do not believe in God nor in the Last Day, who do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden, and who do not submit to the Law of truth, among those to whom the Scripture was given — until they pay the war indemnity, by their own hand, in a state of submission.i 29
  • The Reoriented said: "Al-'Uzayr is the son of God";i 30
  • and the Helpers said: "Al-Massih is the son of God."i 30
  • That is their saying, [uttered] by their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who, before them, denied-disowned. 30
  • May God combat them! 30
  • How then are they turned away? 30
  • They took their rabbis and their monks as masters besides God, as well as Al-Massih, son of Maryam,i 31
  • though they had been ordered only to obey one deity. 31
  • There is no deity but Him. 31
  • Glory be to Him, above what they associate with Him! 31
  • They want to extinguish God's light with their mouths, but God refuses everything except to bring His light to completion, however much those who deny-disown detest it. 32
  • It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the Law of truth, so as to make it prevail over every [other] law, however much the associators detest it. 33
  • O you who have believed! many rabbis and monks devour the wealth of people through falsehood, and turn [others] away from the path of God. 34
  • And those who hoard gold and silver, and do not spend it in the way of God — announce to them a painful punishment, 34
  • on the day when it will be heated in the fire of Jahannam, and their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be branded with it: "This is what you hoarded for yourselves; taste then what you used to hoard!" 35
  • The number of months, with God, is twelve months, in God's Code, since the day He created the heavens and the earth;i 36
  • four of them are inviolable.i 36
  • That is the upright Law. 36
  • So do not wrong yourselves during these. 36
  • And fight the associators throughout all the months, as they fight you throughout all the months,i 36
  • and know that God is with those who guard themselves. 36
  • The intercalation is only an increase in concealment, by which those who conceal mislead [the people]: they make it free one year and restrict it another, so as to adjust the number of what God has made inviolable, thereby making permitted what God has made inviolable.i 37
  • The evil of their deeds has been embellished for them. 37
  • And God does not guide the people of the concealers.i 37
  • O you who have believed! what is with you, when it is said to you: 'Mobilize on the way of God', that you cling heavily to the earth?i 38
  • Are you satisfied with the present life rather than the last life? 38
  • The enjoyment of the present life, compared with the last life, is but little. 38
  • If you do not mobilize, He will punish you with a painful punishment, and replace you with another people, without your harming Him in any way. 39
  • God has power over all things. 39
  • If you do not help him, God has already helped him, when those who denied-disowned expelled him, the second of two, when they were both in the cave, when he said to his companion: "Do not grieve, God is with us." 40
  • God then sent down His tranquility upon him, 40
  • and He reinforced him with soldiers you did not see, 40
  • and He made lowest the word of those who had denied-disowned, 40
  • while the word of God is the highest. 40
  • God is All-Powerful, Wise. 40
  • Mobilize, light or heavy, and strive with your possessions and your Selves in the way of God. 41
  • That is better for you, if you knew. 41
  • Had it been a near gain and an easy journey, they would have followed you; but the distance seemed long to them. 42
  • They will swear by God: "If we had been able, we would have gone out with you"; 42
  • they destroy themselves, 42
  • and God knows that they are indeed liars. 42
  • May God pardon you! Why did you give them permission, before those who spoke truly became clear to you, and before you knew the liars? 43
  • Those who believe in God and the Last Day do not ask you for permission [to be excused] from striving with their possessions and their Selves. 44
  • God knows those who guard themselves. 44
  • Only those who do not believe in God nor in the Last Day ask you for permission, whose cores are seized with doubt, so that they waver in their doubt. 45
  • Had they wanted to set out, they would have prepared equipment for it; 46
  • but God was averse to their setting out, and He held them back, and it was said to them: "Stay with those who stay." 46
  • Had they gone out among you, they would only have increased your confusion, and would have rushed about among you, seeking to sow discord among you — and among you are some who listen to them. 47
  • God knows the unjust. 47
  • They had already sought to sow discord before, and had turned matters over for you in every direction, until the truth came and God's command became manifest, in spite of their aversion. 48
  • And among them is one who says: "Grant me permission, and do not expose me to the trial." 49
  • Is it not into the trial itself that they have already fallen? 49
  • Jahannam indeed surrounds those who deny-disown. 49
  • If good befalls you, it grieves them, 50
  • and if misfortune befalls you, they say: "We had already taken our precautions before" — and they turn away, rejoicing. 50
  • Say: "Nothing will befall us except what God has decreed for us; 51
  • He is our Protector. 51
  • It is upon God that the believers should rely." 51
  • Say: "Do you await for us anything but one of the two best [outcomes]? 52
  • And we, we await for you that God strike you with a punishment from Himself, or by our hands. 52
  • So wait, 52
  • we are waiting with you." 52
  • Say: "Spend willingly or reluctantly, it will not be accepted from you, 53
  • for you are a people of oversteppers." 53
  • And nothing prevented their contributions from being accepted, except that they denied-disowned God and His Messenger, that they come to the Contact only lazily, and spend only reluctantly. 54
  • Let neither their wealth nor their children impress you then. 55
  • God wants only, through this, to punish them in the present life, and that their Selves depart while they deny-disown. 55
  • They swear by God that they are indeed of you, when they are not of you; but they are a people who love to divide.i 56
  • If they found a refuge, caves, or a hiding place, they would rush headlong into it. 57
  • And among them is one who criticizes you concerning the alms: if they are given some of it, they are satisfied; and if they are not given any of it, at once they are angry. 58
  • Had they instead been satisfied with what God and His Messenger gave them, and said: "God suffices us; God will grant us of His favor, and His Messenger too; 59
  • it is toward God that we turn." 59
  • The alms are destined only for the destitute, the poor, those who administer them, those whose cores have been united with the believers, those under the burden of a debt, those indebted by an unforeseen expense, in the way of God, and the stranded traveler — an obligation from God.i 60
  • God is All-Knowing, Wise. 60
  • And among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say: "He is all ear." 61
  • Say: "An ear of good for you: he believes in God, trusts the believers, and is a benevolence for those among you who have believed." 61
  • And those who hurt the messenger of God will have a painful punishment. 61
  • They swear to you by God, to satisfy you; but God and His Messenger are more worthy that they should seek to satisfy Them, if they are believers. 62
  • Do they not know that whoever opposes God and His Messenger will have the fire of Jahannam, wherein he will abide eternally? 63
  • That is the immense disgrace. 63
  • The hypocrites dread that a sourate be sent down concerning them, informing them of what is in their cores. 64
  • Say: "Mock away! 64
  • God will bring out into the open what you dread." 64
  • And if you question them, they will certainly say: "We were only chatting and playing." 65
  • Say: "Was it God, His signs, and His Messenger that you were mocking?" 65
  • Do not make excuses: 66
  • you have denied-disowned after your faith. 66
  • If pardon is granted to a group among you, another group will be punished, for having been severed.i 66
  • The hypocrites, men and women, are of one another: they enjoin what is disavowed and forbid what is recognized, and they close their hands; they forgot God, so He forgot them. 67
  • The hypocrites are indeed the oversteppers. 67
  • God has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and those who deny-disown, the fire of Jahannam, wherein they will abide eternally. 68
  • That suffices them. 68
  • God has cursed them, 68
  • and they will have a lasting punishment. 68
  • Like those who preceded you: they were stronger than you in power, richer in wealth and children; they enjoyed their share, and you have enjoyed your share as those before you enjoyed their share, and you have plunged [into futility] as they plunged. 69
  • Those are the ones whose works have collapsed, in the present life and in the last life; 69
  • and those are the losers. 69
  • Has there not come to them the information concerning those before them: the people of Nuh, the Recidivists [Aad], Thamud, the people of Ibrahim, the companions of Madyan, and the overturned cities?i 70
  • Their messengers had come to them with clear proofs. 70
  • It was not for God to wrong them; 70
  • but it was themselves that they wronged. 70
  • The believers, men and women, are allies of one another: 71
  • they enjoin what is recognized and forbid what is disavowed, they maintain the Contact, give the purifying alms, and obey God and His Messenger. 71
  • Those are the ones on whom God will have benevolence. 71
  • God is All-Powerful, Wise. 71
  • God has promised the believers, men and women, gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, and good dwellings in the gardens of Eden; 72
  • and a good pleasure from God is greater still. 72
  • That is the immense triumph. 72
  • O Prophet! strive against those who deny-disown and the hypocrites, and be firm with them. 73
  • Their refuge will be Jahannam, 73
  • and what an evil destination! 73
  • They swear by God that they said nothing; 74
