When Talut set out with the troops, he said: "God is going to try you with a river: whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is of me — except one who draws a scoop with his hand." 2:249

فَلَمَّا فَصَلَ طَالُوتُ بِٱلْجُنُودِ قَالَ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مُبْتَلِيكُم بِنَهَرٍۢ فَمَن شَرِبَ مِنْهُ فَلَيْسَ مِنِّى وَمَن لَّمْ يَطْعَمْهُ فَإِنَّهُۥ مِنِّىٓ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱغْتَرَفَ غُرْفَةًۢ بِيَدِهِۦ

then He turned you away from them, so as to try you. 3:152

ثُمَّ صَرَفَكُمْ عَنْهُمْ لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ

Say: "Had you stayed in your houses, those for whom killing was decreed would certainly have gone forth to their places of falling" — and so that God might try what is in your chests, and purify what is in your cores. 3:154

قُل لَّوْ كُنتُمْ فِى بُيُوتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ ٱلَّذِينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَتْلُ إِلَىٰ مَضَاجِعِهِمْ وَلِيَبْتَلِىَ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِى صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ

You will certainly be tried in your possessions and in your Selves, and you will certainly hear, from those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and from those who have associated, much harm. 3:186

لَتُبْلَوُنَّ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِكُمْ وَأَنفُسِكُمْ وَلَتَسْمَعُنَّ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ وَمِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَشْرَكُوٓا۟ أَذًۭى كَثِيرًۭا

And test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage; if you then discern in them a soundness of judgment, hand over to them their possessions, and do not devour them wastefully and hastily, before they grow up. 4:6

وَٱبْتَلُوا۟ ٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغُوا۟ ٱلنِّكَاحَ فَإِنْ ءَانَسْتُم مِّنْهُمْ رُشْدًۭا فَٱدْفَعُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ وَلَا تَأْكُلُوهَآ إِسْرَافًۭا وَبِدَارًا أَن يَكْبَرُوا۟

but [He did not], so as to try you in what He has given you. 5:48

وَلَٰكِن لِّيَبْلُوَكُمْ فِى مَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمْ

O you who have believed! God will certainly try you with some game that your hands and your spears will reach, so that God may know who fears Him without perceiving Him. 5:94

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَيَبْلُوَنَّكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلصَّيْدِ تَنَالُهُۥٓ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَرِمَاحُكُمْ لِيَعْلَمَ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَخَافُهُۥ بِٱلْغَيْبِ

And it is He who made you successors on the earth, and raised some of you above others in degrees, so as to try you in what He has given you. 6:165

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَكُمْ خَلَٰٓئِفَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَرَفَعَ بَعْضَكُمْ فَوْقَ بَعْضٍۢ دَرَجَٰتٍۢ لِّيَبْلُوَكُمْ فِى مَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمْ

and there was in that, for you, an immense trial from your Guardian. 7:141

وَفِى ذَٰلِكُم بَلَآءٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌۭ

Thus did We test them, for having overstepped [through this theological transgression]. 7:163

كَذَٰلِكَ نَبْلُوهُم بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْسُقُونَ

And We tried them with good things and bad things, that they might return. 7:168

وَبَلَوْنَٰهُم بِٱلْحَسَنَٰتِ وَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ

so as to test the believers with a good trial, from Himself. 8:17

وَلِيُبْلِىَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْهُ بَلَآءً حَسَنًا

There, every Self will experience what it did before, 10:30

هُنَالِكَ تَبْلُوا۟ كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ مَّآ أَسْلَفَتْ

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days, while His Edifice was founded upon the water [as primary matter], so as to test you: which of you acts best. 11:7

وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍۢ وَكَانَ عَرْشُهُۥ عَلَى ٱلْمَآءِ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا

and there was in that, from your Guardian, an immense trial." 14:6

وَفِى ذَٰلِكُم بَلَآءٌۭ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ عَظِيمٌۭ

God only thereby tests you, 16:92

إِنَّمَا يَبْلُوكُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦ

We have made what is on the earth an ornament for it, so as to test them: which of them is best in deed. 18:7

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ زِينَةًۭ لَّهَا لِنَبْلُوَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا

he said: «Adam, shall I point you to the tree of everlastingness and a dominion that does not decay?» 20:120

قَالَ يَٰٓـَٔادَمُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكَ عَلَىٰ شَجَرَةِ ٱلْخُلْدِ وَمُلْكٍۢ لَّا يَبْلَىٰ

and We test you with bad and with good, as a trial; 21:35

وَنَبْلُوكُم بِٱلشَّرِّ وَٱلْخَيْرِ فِتْنَةًۭ

and We were indeed putting [that people] to the test. 23:30

وَإِن كُنَّا لَمُبْتَلِينَ

When he saw it placed beside him, he said: 'This is from the favor of my Guardian, to test me: will I acknowledge, or will I deny? 27:40

فَلَمَّا رَءَاهُ مُسْتَقِرًّا عِندَهُۥ قَالَ هَٰذَا مِن فَضْلِ رَبِّى لِيَبْلُوَنِىٓ ءَأَشْكُرُ أَمْ أَكْفُرُ

There the believers were tested, and shaken with a violent shaking. 33:11

هُنَالِكَ ٱبْتُلِىَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَزُلْزِلُوا۟ زِلْزَالًۭا شَدِيدًۭا

This was indeed the manifest trial. 37:106

إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ ٱلْبَلَٰٓؤُا۟ ٱلْمُبِينُ

We chose them, knowingly, above all beings, and We gave them, among the signs, that which held a clear trial. 44:33

وَلَقَدِ ٱخْتَرْنَٰهُمْ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ عَلَى ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُم مِّنَ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ مَا فِيهِ بَلَٰٓؤٌۭا۟ مُّبِينٌ

but [He does otherwise] so as to test some of you by means of others. 47:4

وَلَٰكِن لِّيَبْلُوَا۟ بَعْضَكُم بِبَعْضٍۢ

And We will surely test you, until We make evident those among you who strive and those who are steadfast, and We will test your accounts. 47:31

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَعْلَمَ ٱلْمُجَٰهِدِينَ مِنكُمْ وَٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ وَنَبْلُوَا۟ أَخْبَارَكُمْ

who created death and life to test you: which of you does best in deeds. 67:2

ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًۭا

We tried them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore they would gather its fruit in the morning, without exception, 68:18

إِنَّا بَلَوْنَٰهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَآ أَصْحَٰبَ ٱلْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا۟ لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ

Indeed, We created man from a mingled drop, to test him; and We made him hearing and seeing. 76:2

إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍۢ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَٰهُ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًا

Indeed, He is capable of his return, the Day when secrets will be put to the test; then he will have no power nor any helper. 86:10

إِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ رَجْعِهِۦ لَقَادِرٌۭ يَوْمَ تُبْلَى ٱلسَّرَآئِرُ فَمَا لَهُۥ مِن قُوَّةٍۢ وَلَا نَاصِرٍۢ

As for man, when his Guardian tries him and honors him and blesses him, he says, "My Guardian has honored me." 89:15

فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ

But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Guardian has humiliated me." 89:17

وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَٰنَنِ كَلَّا
