they put their fingers in their ears, because of the thunderbolts, wary of death.

and as for those who disown, they say: "What did God intend by this example?"

Do you order virtue upon men, while forgetting yourselves, when you recite the Scripture?

Will you not then reason?

He said: "Would you take what is immediate in exchange for what is better?

That is because they used to disown the signs of God, and kill the informants without right.

They said: "Invoke your Guardian for us, that He make clear to us her color."

He said: "He says she is a yellow cow, of a vivid color,

They slaughtered her then, after having very nearly not done it.

thus does God bring the dead back to life, and show you His signs, perhaps you will reason.

And God is not heedless of what you do.

Will you not then reason?

Woe, then, to those who write the Scripture with their hands, then say: "This is from God", to buy with it a paltry price!

or do you say about God what you do not know?"

Then here you are, nonetheless, killing one another, and expelling a fraction of your own from their abodes, supporting one another against them in transgression and hostility;

And God is not heedless of what they do.

You denied a fraction of them, and you kill another.

Say: "Why, then, did you kill the informants of God, before, if you were believers?"

God is All-Seeing of what they do.

God is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.

And the Reoriented said: "The Helpers rest on nothing"; and the Helpers said: "The Reoriented rest on nothing"; while they recite the Scripture.

Those to whom We have given the Scripture, and who recite it as it should be recited, those are the ones who believe in it.

and you will not be questioned about what they used to do.

Or do you say: "Ibrahim, Isma'il, Ishaq, Yaacoub, and the bloodlines were Reoriented or Helpers"?

And God is not heedless of what you do.

and you will not be questioned about what they used to do.

And God is not heedless of what they do.

And God is not heedless of what you do.

And We will surely test you with some fear and hunger, and with a diminution of goods, Self, and fruits;

There are surely, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, in the alternation of night and day, in the vessel that sails at sea laden with what benefits mankind, in the water that God sends down from the sky and by which He brings the earth back to life after its death, spreading in it every kind of living being, in the diversity of the winds, and in the cloud subjected between the sky and the earth — signs for a people who reason.

What! Even if their ancestors reasoned nothing and did not let themselves be guided?

Deaf, mute, blind, they do not, then, reason.

Indeed, those who withhold what God has sent down of the Scripture, and buy with it a paltry price — those are the ones who consume nothing in their bellies but the Fire; God will not speak to them on the Day of Appearance, and will not purify them,

And whoever changes it after having heard it, the transgression thereof falls only upon those who change it.

They ask you about public announcements.

And fight, in the way of God, those who fight you, but do not commit aggression:

They ask you: what should they spend?

They ask you about the inviolable month, combat taking place in it.

And they will not cease to fight you until they make you renounce your Law, if they can.

They ask you about wine and games of chance.

And they ask you: what should they spend? Say: "The surplus."

And they ask you about orphans. Say: "Making their situation sound is a good;

And they ask you about menstruation. Say: "It is a nuisance;

For those who swear to abstain from their women, a period of expectancy of four months;

and know that God is All-Seeing of what you do.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

God is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.

Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will reason.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

you recognize them by their marks: they do not ask men insistently.

Those who devour usury rise only as one rises whom the Diverter sends staggering by his touch.

God is All-Knowing of what you do.

And those who are deeply rooted in knowledge say: "We believe in it; all of it comes from our Guardian";

those who say: "Our Guardian, we have indeed believed; forgive us, then, our offenses, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire",

Indeed, those who disown the signs of God, kill the informants without right, and kill those who, among men, order equity — announce to them a painful punishment.

And I inform you of what you eat and what you store up in your houses.

Will you not then reason?

A group among the people of the Scripture would have liked to lead you astray;

but they lead astray none but themselves, without sensing it.

and they say the lie against God, knowingly.

and they say: "This comes from God",

and they say the lie against God, knowingly.

and those are the astray.

Say: "O people of the Scripture! Why do you disown the signs of God, when God is witness to what you do?"

And God is not heedless of what you do.

That is because they used to disown the signs of God, and kill the informants without right.

among the people of the Scripture, there is an upright community, which recites the signs of God in the hours of the night, prostrating.

O you who have believed! Do not take close confidants apart from your own: they never cease to cause you confusion, and would like you to be overwhelmed.

We have already made the signs clear to you, if you reason.

God indeed encompasses perfectly what they do.

And do not slacken, and do not grieve: you are the most exalted, if you are believers.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

saying: "Do we have any part in the matter?"

saying: "Had we had, in this matter, any power, we would not have been killed here."

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

God is All-Seeing of what they do.

saying with their mouths what was not in their cores.

And let those who are stingy with what God has given them of His favor by no means think that it is a good for them;

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

You will surely be tested in your goods and in your Selves, and you will surely hear, from those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and from those who have associated, much nuisance.

And guard yourselves toward God, in whose name you solicit one another, and the ties of kinship.

Those who devour the goods of orphans wrongfully are only devouring fire in their bellies,

and they will burn in an inferno.

The repentance accepted by God concerns only those who do evil out of ignorance, then turn back without delay:

And repentance is not accepted for those who commit evil deeds until, when death presents itself to one of them, he says: "I indeed turn back now" — nor for those who die while disowning:

Those who are stingy, enjoin stinginess upon men, and withhold what God has given them of His favor —

O you who have believed! Do not approach the Contact while intoxicated, until you know what you are saying, nor soiled — except when passing along a way — until you have washed yourselves.

Among the Reoriented, there are some who garble words, away from their context, and say: "We have heard and disobeyed", and: "Listen, without being made to hear", and: "Disdain us", twisting their tongues and attacking the Law.

Have you not seen those to whom a portion of the Scripture was given, who believe in the Idol and the Overreacher, and say of those who disown: "These are better guided, as to the way, than those who have believed"?

And what is with you that you should not fight in the way of God, and for the men, women, and children reduced to weakness, who say: "Our Guardian, bring us out of this city whose people are wrongdoers, and give us, from Yourself, a protector, and give us, from Yourself, a helper"?

Those who have believed fight in the way of God,

and those who disown fight in the way of the Overreacher.

And they say: "Deference",

If they turn their backs, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them, and take, among them, neither ally nor helper — except those who join a people between whom and you there is a solemn engagement, or who come to you

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

Those who disown would like you to neglect your arms and your baggage, so as to swoop down upon you in a single rush.

God encompasses perfectly what they do.

but they lead astray none but themselves, and they cannot harm you at all.

And whoever does sound deeds, male or female, while being a believer, those will be admitted into the Garden, and will not be wronged even by the groove of a date-stone.

but if you do good and guard yourselves, God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

And if you twist or turn away, God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

Those who disown God and His messengers, and want to separate God from His messengers, saying: "We believe in part, and we disown part", wanting to carve out a way between the two — those are the true disowners.

They ask you: what is permitted to them?

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

if they leave it, then we will enter it."

They garble words once set in their places, saying: "If you are given this, take it; and if you are not given it, beware."

Listeners to the lie, devourers of illicit gain —

And how would they take you as judge, when they have the Tawrah, wherein is the judgment of God, and then they turn their backs after that?

You see those in whose cores is a sickness speeding among them, saying: "We dread that a setback may strike us";

that is because they are a people who do not reason.

How evil is what they used to do!

but many of them, how evil is what they do!

Every time a messenger brought them what their Self did not lean toward, they denied a fraction, and another fraction, they killed.

God is All-Seeing of what they do.

And if they do not cease what they say, a painful punishment will surely touch those among them who have disowned.

how evil is what they used to do!

You see many of them allying themselves with those who disown:

And when they hear what has been sent down to the messenger, you see their eyes overflow with tears, for having recognized the truth; they say: "Our Guardian, we have believed; inscribe us, then, among the witnesses.

O you who have believed! God will surely test you with some game that will fall to your hands and your spears, so that God may distinguish who fears Him even though He escapes his senses.

but those who disown invent the lie against God, and most of them do not reason.

To God will be your return, all together, and He will inform you of what you used to do.

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Praise be to God, who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darknesses and the light; yet those who disown set up equals to their Guardian.

to the point that, when they come to you to argue, those who disown say: "These are nothing but legends of the ancients."

They are indeed losers, those who have denied the meeting with God, to the point that, when the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, they say: "What desolation for us, for what we neglected in it!" They will bear their burdens on their backs.

Will you not then reason?

We will indeed know that what they say surely grieves you;

But their cores hardened, and the Diverter embellished for them what they were doing.

I do not hold what you seek to hasten.

Say: "If I held what you seek to hasten, the matter would already have been decided between me and you."

then to Him will be your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.

And had they associated, what they were doing would have collapsed for them.

which they put on parchments, making some appear and hiding much —

Today, you will be recompensed with the punishment of degradation, for having said about God other than the truth, and for having grown proud before His signs."

then to their Guardian will be their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.

but most of them are ignorant.

And many surely lead astray by their emotions, without knowledge.

Thus were embellished, for those who disown, the deeds they used to do.

and He is their protector, for what they used to do.

That is because it is not in the nature of your Guardian to annihilate cities wrongfully, while their inhabitants were heedless.

And your Guardian is not heedless of what they do.

and do not follow the emotions of those who have denied Our signs, and of those who do not believe in the last life, and who set up equals to their Guardian.

that is what He has recommended to you, perhaps you will reason.

then He will inform them of what they used to do.

How many a city have We annihilated! Our rigor came upon it by night, or while it was taking its midday rest.

Will you say about God what you do not know?"

until, having all joined therein, the last of them will say of the first: "Our Guardian, these are the ones who led us astray; give them, then, a double punishment from the Fire."

Indeed, those who denied Our signs and grew too proud for them, the gates of heaven will not open for them, and they will not enter the Garden, until the camel passes through the eye of the needle.

And it will be called out to them: "This is the Garden which you have inherited, for what you used to do."

Do you argue with me concerning attributes that you and your ancestors have named, for which God has sent down no authority?

The truth then came to pass, and what they were doing became vain.

He said: "It may be that your Guardian will annihilate your enemy and make you successors on the earth, so as to look at how you would act."

He said: "You are indeed an ignorant people.

and vain is what they were doing."

And when We saved you from the clan of Fir'awn, who inflicted upon you the worst of punishments, massacring your sons and violating the modesty of your women —

And those who denied Our signs and the meeting of the last life, their works have collapsed; will they be recompensed except according to what they used to do?

He said: "Son of my mother! The people indeed reduced me to weakness, and almost killed me; do not, then, let the enemies gloat over me, and do not place me with the wrongdoing people."

And among the people of Moussa, there is a community that guides according to the truth and that, by it, acts with justice.

And We tested them with good things and bad things, perhaps they would return.

Then a posterity succeeded them, who inherited the Scripture, taking the fleeting goods of this lower world, and saying: "It will be forgiven us"; and if a similar good comes to them again, they take it.

Will you not then reason?

Would You annihilate us for what the workers of falsehood have done?"

Those are the heedless.

They will be recompensed according to what they used to do.

And among those We have created, there is a community that guides according to the truth and that, by it, acts with justice.

They ask you about the Hour: when will it drop anchor?

They ask you as if you had searched it out to the end.

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. They ask you about the surpluses.

The believers are only those whose cores tremble when God is remembered, whose faith increases when His signs are recited to them, and who entrust themselves to their Guardian,

As when your Guardian brought you out of your house in truth, while a fraction of believers were surely averse to it, arguing with you about the truth once it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death, while they looked on.

The worst of living beings, with God, are indeed the deaf, the mute, those who do not reason.

But if they cease, then God is indeed All-Seeing of what they do.

God encompasses perfectly what they do.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

How evil is what they used to do!

Will you then not fight a people who violated their oaths, who were minded to expel the messenger, and who attacked you first? Would you dread them?

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

O you who have believed! Many rabbis and monks surely devour the goods of men through falsehood, and bar from the way of God.

And fight the associators throughout all the months, as they fight you throughout all the months,

The deferred is only an increase in disowning: by it, those who disown lead astray; they make it permitted one year and make it inviolable one year, so as to trample the number of what God has made inviolable, and thus make permitted what God has made inviolable.

And among them are those who trouble the Informant and say: "He is all ear."

then you will be brought back to the Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."

And the very first forerunners, among the emigrants and the Auxiliaries, and those who followed them in excellence — God is satisfied with them, and they are satisfied with Him;

and you will be brought back to the Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."

They fight in the way of God, kill and are killed — it is a promise incumbent upon Him, in truth, in the Tawrah, the Injil, and this Recitation.

That is because no thirst, no fatigue, no dearth strikes them in the way of God, no step they tread irritates those who disown, and no gain from an enemy accrues to them, without a sound deed being inscribed for them because of it.

so that God may recompense them according to the most beautiful of what they used to do.

O you who have believed! Fight those among the disowners who are near you, and let them find in you firmness.

Indeed, those who do not hope for Our meeting, who were content with the present life and were calmed by it, and those who are heedless of Our signs — those are the ones whose resort will be the Fire, for what they used to earn.

Thus were embellished, for the excessive ones, the deeds they used to do.

Then We made you successors on the earth, after them, so as to look at how you would act.

Will you not then reason?"

And they obey, besides God, what neither harms nor benefits them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with God."

And they say: "Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Guardian!"

then to Us will be your return, and We will inform you of what you used to do.

They will say: "God."

God is indeed All-Knowing of what they do.

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?

And if they deny you, say: "To me my work, and to you your work; you are quit of what I do, and I am quit of what you do."

but will you make the deaf hear, even though they do not reason?

God is thereafter a witness over what they do.

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"

Now?! When you used to seek to hasten it!"

You are not in any situation, nor do you recite any Recitation from it, nor do you do any deed, without Our being witnesses over you when you indulge in it.

Will you say about God what you do not know?

Moussa said: "Do you say this of the truth, once it has come to you?

But many men are surely heedless of Our signs.

and He places filth upon those who do not reason.

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?

and vain will be what they were doing.

but I see you to be an ignorant people.

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?

so do not grieve over what they were doing.

Will you not then reason?

And his people came to him, rushing, though they had previously been committing evil deeds.

My Guardian encompasses perfectly what you do.

He is Intimately Acquainted with what they do.

He is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.

but they do not cease to differ, except those to whom your Guardian shows benevolence,

And say to those who do not believe: "Act according to your position; we act; and wait: we too are indeed waiting."

and your Guardian is not heedless of what you do.

We have sent it down as a flawless Recitation, perhaps you will reason.

He said: "It surely grieves me that you take him, and I fear the wolf may devour him while you are heedless of him."

but God was All-Knowing of what they were doing.

And the one of the two who had been saved said, remembering after a long while: "I will inform you of its prediction: so send me forth."

and what you have harvested, keep it in its ear, except the little that you eat.

They said: "We shall seek to obtain him from his father, we shall surely do it."

and let those who entrust themselves entrust themselves to Him."

and said: "I am, indeed, your brother: so do not grieve over what they were doing."

He said: "Do you know what you did to Youssof and his brother, when you were ignorant?"

will you not then reason?

There are surely in that signs for a people who reason.

And they ask you to hasten evil before good, though exemplary precedents have already passed before them.

and He sends the thunderbolt, and strikes with it whom He wills, while they argue about God; and He is of a formidable vigor.

Only the possessors of intelligence remember, those who are faithful to God's pact and do not break the solemn engagement, those who join what God has commanded to be joined, dread their Guardian and fear the worst of reckonings, those who were patient seeking the direction of their Guardian, maintained the Contact, spent from what We provided them, secretly and openly, and push back evil with good.

the Gardens of permanence, which they will enter, along with those who were sound among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants,

and the Agents will enter upon them through every gate:

so let those who entrust themselves entrust themselves to God."

Have you not seen those who exchanged God's blessing for disowning, and lodged their people in the abode of blight — Jahannam, wherein they will burn:

He said: "We are indeed trembling because of you."

He said: "And who loses heart regarding his Guardian's benevolence, except the astray?"

He said: "What then is your case, O envoys?"

And when the envoys came to the clan of Lut, he said: "You are people I do not recognize."

By your Guardian, We shall surely question them all about what they used to do.

We have indeed sufficed you against the mockers, those who place, alongside God, another deity:

We will indeed know that your chest tightens from what they say:

in them you find warmth and benefits, and from them you eat.

There are surely in that signs for a people who reason.

And when it is said to them: "What has your Guardian sent down?" they say: "Legends of the ancients" — so as to bear, on the Day of Appearance, their burdens in full, and a portion of the burdens of those they mislead without knowledge:

God is indeed All-Knowing of what you were doing.

The Gardens of permanence, which they will enter, beneath which rivers flow; they will have therein whatever they will.

saying: "Peace be upon you! Enter the Garden, for what you used to do."

those who were patient and who entrust themselves to their Guardian.

And before God prostrates everything in the heavens and on the earth, among living beings, as well as the Agents, without growing proud: they fear their Guardian, above them, and do what they are commanded.

And they assign, to what they do not know, a portion of what We have provided them.

And they assign to God daughters — Glory be to Him!

And they assign to God what they themselves detest,

There is surely in that a sign for a people who reason.

God indeed knows what you do.

and you will surely be questioned about what you did.

And We shall surely recompense those who were patient with their reward, according to the most beautiful of their deeds.

Whoever does a sound deed, male or female, while being a believer, We shall surely make him live a wholesome life, and We shall surely recompense them with their reward, according to the most beautiful of their deeds.

He indeed has no authority over those who believe and who entrust themselves to their Guardian.

His authority is exercised only over those who take him as ally, and over those who make him an associate.

We will indeed know that they say: "It is only a human who teaches it to him."

and those are the heedless.

This Recitation indeed guides to what is most upright, and gives the believers who do sound deeds the glad tidings that they will have a great reward, and that those who do not believe in the last life — We have made ready for them a painful punishment.

You are surely saying an immense saying.

Say: "If there were, with Him, deities, as they say, they would then have sought a way to the Holder of the Edifice."

Glory be to Him, and He is far above what they say, in great exaltation.

They will then say: "Who will bring us back?"

Then they will shake their heads at you and say: "When will that be?"

Nothing has kept Us from sending the signs, except that the former peoples denied them.

And they ask you about the Influx.

those to whom knowledge was given before it, when it is recited to them, fall prostrate on their chins, saying: 'Glory be to our Guardian! Our Guardian's promise is surely a thing done.'

straight — to warn of a severe rigor from Him, to give the believers who do sound deeds the glad tidings that they will have a fine reward, wherein they will remain forever, and to warn those who said: "God has taken a child."

They say nothing but a lie.

And We shall surely make what is on it an arid outcrop.

They will say: "Three, their dog the fourth,"

and they will say: "Five, their dog the sixth," flinging what escapes the senses,

and they will say: "Seven,"

Those are the ones who will have the Gardens of permanence; beneath them rivers flow; they will be ornamented there with bracelets of gold and will wear green clothes of fine silk and brocade, reclining on adorned couches.

and they will say: "Woe to us! What is it with this register that it omits nothing, small or great, without enumerating it!"

As for the boat, it belonged to destitute people working at sea; I wanted to make it defective, for beyond them was a king who was taking every boat by force.

And they ask you about the Holder of the Two Acolytes.

Then there succeeded them a generation who let the Contact dissipate and followed desires: so they will meet with errancy — except one who repents, believes, and does a sound deed; those will be admitted into the Garden and be wronged in nothing: the Gardens of permanence which the All-Benevolent has promised His obedient ones, even though they escape their senses.

We know best what they will say, when the most exemplary of them in his course of conduct will say: "You remained no more than a day."

And they ask you about the mountains; say: "My Guardian will scatter them utterly, letting them be a level plain, wherein you will see neither crookedness nor rise."

So be patient with what they say,

Let him then bring us a sign, just as the earlier ones were sent with."

We did not make them bodies that ate no food,

will you not then reason?

"Do not run off — return to the affluence you were given and to your dwellings, perhaps you will be questioned!"

while they will be questioned.

who do not precede Him in saying, and who act by His command.

I will show you My signs, so do not ask Me to hasten them.

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"

Will you not then reason?"

And among the Diverters were some who dived for him and performed other tasks besides that;

until Yajuj and Majuj are opened, and they come swarming down from every height, and the true promise draws near — then at once the sights of those who disowned are fixed: "Woe to us! We were heedless of this — we have rather been wrongdoers!"

Indeed, God admits those who have believed and done sound deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow; they will be ornamented therein with bracelets of gold and pearls,

Permission is given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged —

Have they not traveled through the earth, so as to have cores with which to reason, or ears with which to hear?

And they ask you to hasten the punishment,

And if they argue with you, say, "God knows best what you do.

And when Our clear signs are recited to them, you recognize disavowal on the faces of those who disown; they nearly assault those who recite Our signs to them.

and those who give pure liberality,

We thus brought into being for you, through it, gardens of palms and vines, wherein you have abundant savoury fruits and from which you eat, and a tree that comes out of Mount Sinai, which grows with oil and a condiment for those who eat.

and you have in them many benefits, and you eat from them, and upon them as well as upon vessels you are carried.

And the court of his people, those who disowned and denied the meeting of the last life, and to whom We had given affluence in the present life, said: "This is nothing but a human like you, who eats of what you eat and drinks of what you drink; and if you defer to a human like you, you will then surely be losers. Does he promise you that, once dead and become earth and bones, you will be brought out? Far, far indeed is what you are promised! There is nothing but our present life, we die and we live, and we will not be raised up! He is nothing but a man who has invented a lie against God, and we will not give him credit."

I am All-Knowing of what you do.

which they will continue to do —

Or do they say that he is afflicted with derangement?

Will you not then reason?

But they said the same thing that the ancients used to say; they said: "When we are dead and have become earth and bones, shall we really be raised?

Say: "To whom belongs the earth and those in it, if you know?" They will say: "To God."

They will say: "To God."

Say: "Who holds in His hand the sovereign dominion of everything, who grants asylum, and against whom none can obtain asylum, if you know?" They will say: "To God."

Then, when the Horn is blown, there will be no ties of lineage between them that day, and they will not question one another.

There was a fraction among My obedient ones who said: "Our Guardian, we believe; forgive us and have benevolence on us, for You are the best of those who show benevolence" — but you made them the object of your scoffing, until they made you forget My Reminder, and you used to laugh at them.

And were it not for the favor of God upon you and His benevolence, in the present life and the last life, an immense punishment would have touched you for what you indulged in, when you received it with your tongues and said with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge, deeming it trivial while it is, in the sight of God, immense.

Those who accuse women protected by the marital bond, unwitting, believing, are indeed cursed in the present life and the last life, and they will have an immense punishment, on the day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will testify against them for what they used to do.

Those are made quit of what is said;

And God is All-Knowing of what you do.

and God is All-Knowing of what they do.

And they say: "We believe in God and in the messenger, and we defer" — then a fraction among them turns its back after that;

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do."

Thus does God make the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reason.

God will surely distinguish those among you who slip away furtively.

They have thus denied you in what you say; they can neither avert nor help.

We did not send before you any of the envoys but that they surely ate food and walked in the marketplaces.

and they will say: "A boundary

Or do you think that most of them hear or reason?

And the obedient ones of the All-Benevolent are those who walk upon the earth gently, and who, when the ignorant address them, say: "Peace."

and those who say: "Our Guardian, turn away from us the punishment of Jahannam — for its punishment is an unforeseen levy;

and those who do not invoke, with God, any other deity, and who do not kill the Self that God has made inviolable, except by right, and who do not commit fornication —

and those who say: "Our Guardian, bestow on us, from our spouses and our descendants, a rest of the gaze, and make us a guide for those who guard themselves" —

He said: "My Guardian, I fear they will deny me; and my chest tightens, and my tongue does not loosen: so send to Harun. They hold an offense against me, and I fear they will kill me."

He said: "The Guardian of the east and the west and what is between them, if you would reason."

"These are surely a small band, and they surely enrage us, and we are surely, all together, a vigilant force."

They said: "No, but we found our ancestors acting thus."

They said: "Shall we give you credit while it is the lowliest who have followed you?"

He said: "What do I know of what they used to do?

My Guardian, save me, and my family, from what they do."

He said: "My Guardian knows best what you do."

Is it then Our punishment that they seek to hasten?

They are surely kept away from all listening.

If they disobey you, say then: "I am indeed quit of what you do."

Have you not seen that they ramble in every valley, and that they say what they never do?

When Moussa said to his family: "I have made out a fire; I will bring you news of it, or bring you a burning firebrand, perhaps you can warm yourselves."

as for Me, the envoys do not fear in My presence,

and thus they act.

Now, I am going to send them a gift, and look at what the envoys return with."

When he saw it placed beside him, he said: "This is from the favor of my Guardian, to test me: will I acknowledge, or will I disown?

He said: "O my people, why do you seek to hasten evil before good? Will you not seek God's forgiveness, in the hope that He may show you benevolence?"

You are rather an ignorant people."

They are rather a people who set up equals.

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"

Say: "It may be that some of what you seek to hasten is very close behind you."

Or what were you doing?"

He is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

Will you be recompensed otherwise than according to what you used to do?

And your Guardian is not heedless of what you do.

And We had beforehand prohibited him from being taken into care by anyone else; she then said: "Shall I point you to a family who will have custody of him for you, and who will be sincere toward him?"

He said to his family: "Stay here; I have made out a fire; perhaps I will bring you news from it, or a glowing ember, perhaps you can warm yourselves."

He said: "My Guardian, I indeed killed a Self among them and I fear they will kill me; but my brother Harun has a clearer tongue than mine — send him with me as a reinforcement who declares me veracious;

He said: "We will strengthen your arm through your brother, and We will appoint for you both an authority, so that they will not be able to reach you — through Our signs,

Will you not then reason?

That day, the pieces of information will become obscure to them, and they will not question one another.

And those who, the day before, had wished for his position began to say: "Ah! So it is that God extends provision to whom He wills among His obedient ones, and measures it!

and whoever comes with an evil deed — those who did evil deeds will be recompensed only for what they used to do.

Or do those who commit evil deeds think that they will outrun Us?

And those who have believed and done sound deeds — We will surely cover their bad deeds, and We will surely recompense them according to the most beautiful of what they used to do.

to Me will be your return, and I will then inform you of what you used to do.

We will indeed bring down upon the people of this city a defilement from the sky, for having overstepped."

We indeed left of it a clear sign, for a people who reason.

otherwise, the workers of falsehood would have had doubts.

And they ask you to hasten the punishment;

They ask you to hasten the punishment,

The day the punishment covers them from above and from beneath their feet, and We say: "Taste what you used to do."

those who were patient and who entrust themselves to their Guardian.

But most of them do not reason.

They know only what is uncovered of the present life, while of the last life they are heedless.

there are surely in that signs for a people who reason.

Thus do We detail the signs for a people who reason.

and if you bring them a sign, those who disown will surely say, "You are nothing but workers of falsehood."

then to Me will be your return, and I will then inform you of what you used to do.

Have you not seen that God makes the night penetrate into the day, and makes the day penetrate into the night, and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running to an appointed term, and that God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do?

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?

and taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do.

And no Self knows what has been hidden for them of a rest of the gaze, as recompense for what they used to do.

As for those who believed and did sound deeds, they have the gardens of resort, as a welcome, for what they used to do;

And they say, "When is this opening, if you are veracious?"

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what they do.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

and a fraction among them was asking the Informant's leave, saying, "Our houses indeed lack privacy" — when they did not:

And they had certainly made a pact with God before, not to turn their backs;

asking for information about you; and were they among you, they would have fought only a little.

one fraction you were killing, and another fraction you were taking captive;

God and His Agents are in constant contact with the Informant.

the day their faces are turned about in the Fire, they will say, "Would that we had deferred to God and deferred to the messenger!"

And they will say, "Our Guardian, we indeed deferred to our chiefs and our great ones, and they led us astray from the way.

I am All-Seeing of what you do."

They made for him whatever he willed of oratories, statues, basins like great reservoirs, and firmly anchored cauldrons.

Say: "You will not be questioned about our severance, nor will we be questioned about what you do."

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"

will they be recompensed except according to what they used to do?

And from each you eat fresh flesh, and you extract an ornament that you wear,

Those who recite the Scripture of God, maintain the Contact, and spend, secretly and openly, from what We have provided them, hope for a trade that will never be blighted, so that He may faithfully repay them their rewards and give them more of His favor.

Gardens of permanence, which they will enter, ornamented therein with bracelets of gold and pearls,

a descent from the All-Powerful, the Benevolent, so that you may warn a people whose ancestors were not warned, and who are therefore heedless.

And multiply for them, as an example, the companions of the city: when the envoys came to it, when We sent two to them, and they denied them; so We made them mighty with a third, and they said: "We are indeed sent to you."

They said: "Our Guardian knows that we are surely sent to you; and only the clear transmission is incumbent upon us."

And a sign for them: the dead earth, which We have brought back to life, and from which We have brought forth grain, and it is from it that they eat.

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"

And the Horn will be blown, and there they are, swarming from their sepulchres to their Guardian.

This is what the All-Benevolent promised, and the envoys were veracious."

This day, no Self will be wronged in the least, and you will be recompensed only for what you used to do.

Did you not then reason?

Will they not then reason?

And We have made them docile for them: some serve as their mounts, and some they eat.

and say: "This is nothing but a manifest illusion. When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we really be raised? And our earliest forefathers too?"

and halt them: they are indeed to be questioned."

And they turn to one another, questioning each other.

Whenever it was said to them, "There is no deity but God," they would grow proud and say: "Shall we really leave our deities for a deranged seductive orator?"

and you will be recompensed only for what you used to do — except the refined obedient ones of God:

And they turn to one another, questioning each other.

It is for the like of this that those who act should act.

They will surely eat from it and fill their bellies with it; then on top of it they will surely have a brew of boiling water.

Then he stole away to their deities, and said: "Do you not eat? What is wrong with you, that you utter nothing?"

He said: "Do you obey what you carve, when God created you and what you make?"

will you not then reason?

Is it not so: it is surely out of their own distortion that they say: "God has begotten"; and they are surely liars.

And they indeed used to say: "If only we had a reminder from the earlier peoples, we would have been the refined obedient ones of God."

Is it then Our punishment that they seek to hasten?

Be patient with what they say,

Indeed, those who stray from the way of God will have a severe punishment, for having forgotten the Day of Reckoning."

So it is. And those who exceed all measure shall surely have the worst place of resort: Jahannam, wherein they will burn,

then to your Guardian is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.

such is the recompense of those who do good, so that God may cover for them the worst of what they did, and recompense them with their reward, according to the most beautiful of what they used to do.

it is to Him that those who entrust themselves entrust themselves."

Say: "Even though they have no power over anything and do not reason?"

Say: "Do you then command me to obey other than God, O ignorant ones?"

And every Self will be faithfully repaid for what it did, and He knows best what they do.

until, when they reach it, its gates will open, and its custodians will say to them: "Did messengers from among you not come to you, reciting to you the signs of your Guardian and warning you of the meeting of this your day?"

Those who bear the Edifice and those around it glorify their Guardian with praise, believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe:

And a believing man from the clan of Fir'awn, who withheld his faith, said: "Will you kill a man for saying, 'My Guardian is God,' when he has brought you clear proofs from your Guardian? If he is lying, his lie is upon him; and if he is veracious, some of what he promises you will strike you.

"O my people, I indeed fear for you the Day of Mutual Calling, the day you will turn your backs fleeing, with no safeguard for you against God;

those who argue concerning the signs of God without any authority having come to them;

and whoever does a sound deed, male or female, while being a believer, those will be admitted into the Garden, provided for therein without account.

Those who argue concerning the signs of God without any authority having come to them have in their chests nothing but pride they will never attain;

those who grow too proud to obey Me will indeed soon enter Jahannam, abased."

and some of you are kept faithfully before — so that you may reach an appointed term, and perhaps you will reason.

Have you not seen those who argue concerning the signs of God, how they are turned away?

and when God's command comes, it is decided in truth, and there the workers of falsehood are the losers.

God is He who made for you the cattle, that you may ride some of them and eat others;

and upon them as well as upon vessels you are carried.

And they say: "Our cores are under coverings against what you call us to, and there is a deafness in our ears, and between us and you a veil. So act — we too are acting."

Say: "Do you really disown the One who created the earth in two days, and assign equals to Him?"

until, when they reach it, their hearing, their sights, and their skins will testify against them about what they used to do.

but you presumed that God did not know much of what you were doing.

We will surely make those who disown taste a severe punishment, and We will surely recompense them according to the worst of what they used to do.

He is indeed All-Seeing of what you do.

Or will they say that he has invented a lie against God?

It is He who accepts repentance from His obedient ones, overlooks evil deeds, and knows what they do.

— and so that those who argue about Our signs may know that they have no escape.

but what is with God is better and more lasting, for those who believe and entrust themselves to their Guardian;

And you will see the wrongdoers, when they see the punishment, saying: "Is there any way to be brought back?"

By the clear Scripture! We have indeed made it a flawless Recitation, perhaps you will reason.

Their testimony will be recorded, and they will be questioned.

and you will soon be questioned.

And such is the Garden which you have inherited, for what you used to do.

Therein you will have abundant savoury fruit, from which you will eat.

Before them, We tried the people of Fir'awn, and a noble messenger came to them: "Hand over to me the obedient ones of God; I am indeed for you a trustworthy messenger; and do not exalt yourselves against God — I bring you manifest authority; and I take refuge in my Guardian and yours against your banishing me; and if you do not give me credit, then keep away from me."

These surely say: "There is nothing but our first death, and we will not be deployed. Bring back our forefathers, if you are veracious."

And in your creation, and in the living beings He spreads, are signs for a people who have certainty; and in the alternation of night and day, in the provision God sends down from the sky and by which He brings the earth back to life after its death, and in the diversity of the winds, are signs for a people who reason.

and on the day the Hour rises, that day the workers of falsehood will lose.

"Today you are recompensed for what you used to do."

We were indeed having transcribed what you used to do."

And who is more astray than one who invokes, besides God, that which will not answer him until the Day of Appearance, while they remain heedless of their invocation?

Or will they say: "He has invented it"?

And since they have not let themselves be guided by it, they will say: "This is an old distortion."

as a recompense for what they used to do.

He said: "The knowledge is with God alone; I convey to you what I was sent with, but I see you to be an ignorant people."

And those who disown enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their sojourn.

And We will surely test you, until We distinguish those among you who strive and those who are patient, and We will test your news.

So do not slacken and do not call for peace, while you are the most exalted, and God is with you,

The notables who were left behind will say to you: "Our goods and our families kept us occupied; so ask forgiveness for us."

They say with their tongues what is not in their cores.

God is rather Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

They will then say: "No, you envy us."

Say to those of the notables who were left behind: "You will be called to a people of severe rigor; you will fight them, or they will become true to God alone."

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

Those who call out to you from behind the chambers, most of them do not reason.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

So be patient with what they say,

We know best what they say,

They ask: "When will the Day of the Due be?" — the day they will be tried over the Fire.

This is what you used to seek to hasten."

He stole away to his household, then brought a fat calf and brought it near them, saying: "Do you not eat?"

He said: "What then is your case, O envoys?"

Those who did wrong will indeed have their lot, like the lot of their companions: so let them not ask Me to hasten it.

You are only recompensed for what you used to do."

"Eat and drink pleasantly, for what you used to do," reclining on aligned couches; and We paired them with companions of listening and support.

And they will turn to one another, questioning each other,

Or do they say: "A seductive orator, we anticipate for him the blows of fate"?

Or do they say: "He invented it"?

Or do you ask them for a reward, so that they are heavily laden with debt?

Or do they say: "We are a united force, able to help itself"?

The force will be defeated, and they will turn their backs.

And companions of listening and support, like well-sheltered pearls, in recompense for what they used to do.

And they used to say: "When we are dead, earth and bones, shall we really be raised? And our earliest forefathers too?"

Then surely you, O astray, denying ones, will eat from the tree of Zaqqoum, and fill your bellies with it, and drink on top of it boiling water, drinking as thirsty camels drink.

Do you then see the water that you drink? Is it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?

Is it this discourse that you treat with complaisance, and do you make your provision consist in denying?

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

We have already made the signs clear to you, perhaps you will reason.

Those who are stingy and enjoin stinginess upon men.

And they are surely saying a disavowed saying and a falsification.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting God never greeted you with, and say within themselves: "Why does God not punish us for what we say?"

They will burn in it.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

How evil is what they used to do!

And those who came after them say: "Our Guardian, forgive us and our brothers who went ahead of us in faith, and put no rancor in our cores toward those who believe.

Have you not seen those who practiced hypocrisy saying to their brothers who, among the People of the Scripture, disowned: "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will never defer to anyone against you; and if you are fought, we will surely help you."

They will not fight you all together except in fortified cities, or from behind walls.

That is because they are a people who do not reason.

God is indeed Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

They are not permitted to them, nor are they permitted to them.

O you who have believed! Why do you say what you do not do?

It is a great abomination with God that you say what you do not do.

Indeed, God loves those who fight in His way in ranks, as if they were a compact structure.

Say: "The death from which you flee will indeed meet you; then you will be brought back to the Knower of what escapes the senses and of what is witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."

How evil is what they used to do!

They are the ones who say: "Do not spend on those who are with the messenger of God until they disperse."

They say: "If we return to the Capital, the mightier will surely expel the more humiliated therefrom."

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

And God is All-Seeing of what you do.

And God is Intimately Acquainted with what you do.

O you who have believed! Guard your Selves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is men and stones, over which are Agents, harsh and severe, who do not disobey God in what He commands them, and who do what they are commanded.

O you who disowned! Do not make excuses today: you are only being recompensed for what you used to do.

They will say: "Our Guardian, complete our light for us and forgive us."

And they say: "When will this promise be, if you are veracious?"

We tested them as We tested the companions of the garden, when they swore that, in the morning, they would gather it in, without exception,

But when they saw it, they said: "We are surely astray; rather, we are deprived!"

Or do you ask them for a reward, so that they are heavily laden with debt?

And those who disown would almost trip you up with their sights when they hear the Reminder, and they say: "He is surely deranged."

And be patient with what they say

He knows that there will be among you those who are sick, and others traveling through the land seeking the favor of God, and others fighting in the way of God.

in gardens, they will ask one another about the severed: "What has led you into Saqar?"

pleasantly, for what you used to do."

They are asking one another about the immense Information, over which they differ.

They will say, "Are we really to be brought back to our former state, once we have become decayed bones?"

They ask you about the Hour: when will it drop anchor?

By no means! Rather, you deny the Due, while surely, over you are preservers, noble scribes, who know what you do.

And surely, the depraved will be in a Blaze; they will burn in it on the Day of the Due, and they will not be absent from it.

Those who cut themselves off used to laugh at those who believed, and when they passed by them, they winked at one another, and when they returned to their people, they returned delighting, and when they saw them, they said, "These are surely astray" — while they had not been sent as preservers over them.

They look: have the disowners received the return of what they used to do?

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. By the sky containing constellations! And by the promised Day! And by a witness and what is witnessed! May the companions of the trench perish, of the fire richly fueled, when they sat around it, and were witnesses to what they were doing to the believers.

But rather, you do not honor the orphan, and you do not urge the feeding of the destitute, and you consume the inheritance with voracious greed, and you love goods with immoderate love. By no means!

In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. When the help of God comes, and the opening, and you see mankind entering the Law of God in crowds, so glorify, with praise, your Guardian, and seek His forgiveness,
