Not for You to Toil
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. Ṭa. Ha.
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم طهWe did not send down upon you the Recitation for you to toil,
ما انزلنا عليك القرءان لتشقىbut as a reminder for whoever is in awe,
الا تذكرة لمن يخشىa descent from the One who created the earth and the lofty heavens,
تنزيلا ممن خلق الارض والسموت العلىthe All-Benevolent, who established Himself upon the Edifice.
الرحمن على العرش استوىTo Him belongs whatever is in the heavens, whatever is on the earth, whatever is between them, and whatever is beneath the moist soil.
له ما في السموت وما في الارض وما بينهما وما تحت الثرىWhether you speak aloud or not, He knows the secret, and what is even more hidden.
وان تجهر بالقول فانه يعلم السر واخفىGod — no deity but Him.
الله لا اله الا هوTo Him belong the most beautiful attributes.
له الاسماء الحسنىHas the account of Moussa reached you?
وهل اتىك حديث موسىWhen he saw a fire, he said to his household: "Stay here, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I will bring you a torch from it, or find at the fire some guidance."
اذ رءا نارا فقال لاهله امكثوا اني ءانست نارا لعلي ءاتيكم منها بقبس او اجد على النار هدىWhen he reached it, he was called: "Moussa! In truth, it is I, your Guardian. Take off your sandals, for you are in the sanctified valley of Touwa."
فلما اتىها نودي يموسى اني انا ربك فاخلع نعليك انك بالواد المقدس طوىAnd I have chosen you: so listen to what is revealed. Indeed it is I, God — no deity but Me. Obey Me, then, and maintain the Contact for My remembrance.
وانا اخترتك فاستمع لما يوحى انني انا الله لا اله الا انا فاعبدني واقم الصلوة لذكريThe Hour is coming — I keep it almost hidden — so that every Self may be recompensed for what it has striven toward.
ان الساعة ءاتية اكاد اخفيها لتجزى كل نفس بما تسعىLet not him who does not believe in it and follows his emotion turn you away from it, lest you perish.
فلا يصدنك عنها من لا يومن بها واتبع هوىه فتردىAnd what is that in your right hand, Moussa?
وما تلك بيمينك يموسىHe said: "It is my staff; I lean on it, I beat down leaves with it for my flock, and I have other uses for it."
قال هي عصاي اتوكوا عليها واهش بها على غنمي ولي فيها مارب اخرىHe said: "Throw it down, Moussa."
قال القها يموسىHe threw it down, and behold, it became a serpent, moving swiftly.
فالقىها فاذا هي حية تسعىHe said: "Take it, and do not fear: We shall restore it to its former state."
قال خذها ولا تخف سنعيدها سيرتها الاولىAnd press your hand to your side: it will come out white, without harm — another sign, that We may show you some of Our greatest signs.
واضمم يدك الى جناحك تخرج بيضاء من غير سوء ءاية اخرى لنريك من ءايتنا الكبرىGo to Fir'awn: he has exceeded all measure.
اذهب الى فرعون انه طغىHe said: "My Guardian, open up my chest for me, ease my task for me, undo a knot from my tongue so that they may understand my speech, and appoint for me an assistant from my own, Harun, my brother.
قال رب اشرح لي صدري ويسر لي امري واحلل عقدة من لساني يفقهوا قولي واجعل لي وزيرا من اهلي هرون اخيStrengthen through him my resolve, and associate him with my task, so that we may glorify You abundantly and remember You abundantly; You are, over us, All-Seeing."
اشدد به ازري واشركه في امري كى نسبحك كثيرا ونذكرك كثيرا انك كنت بنا بصيراHe said: "Your request is granted, Moussa.
قال قد اوتيت سولك يموسىWe had already favoured you once before, when We inspired your mother with what was inspired: "Place him in the chest, then cast him into the river;
ولقد مننا عليك مرة اخرى اذ اوحينا الى امك ما يوحى ان اقذفيه في التابوت فاقذفيه في اليمlet the river cast him onto the shore; an enemy to Me and an enemy to him will take him up."
فليلقه اليم بالساحل ياخذه عدو لي وعدو لهI cast upon you a love from Me, so that you might be formed under My watch — when your sister walked along and said: "Shall I point you to one who can take charge of him?"
والقيت عليك محبة مني ولتصنع على عيني اذ تمشي اختك فتقول هل ادلكم على من يكفلهSo We returned you to your mother, that her gaze might find repose and she not grieve.
فرجعنك الى امك كى تقر عينها ولا تحزنAnd you killed a Self, and We delivered you from distress; and We tried you with a hard trial.
وقتلت نفسا فنجينك من الغم وفتنك فتوناYou stayed years among the people of Madyan, then you came at the appointed measure, Moussa.
فلبثت سنين في اهل مدين ثم جيت على قدر يموسىAnd I formed you for Myself.
واصطنعتك لنفسيGo, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not weaken in My remembrance.
اذهب انت واخوك بايتي ولا تنيا في ذكريGo, both of you, to Fir'awn: he has exceeded all measure. Speak to him gently; perhaps he will be reminded, or feel awe.
اذهبا الى فرعون انه طغى فقولا له قولا لينا لعله يتذكر او يخشىThey said: "Our Guardian, we fear that he will rush against us or that he will exceed all measure toward us."
قالا ربنا اننا نخاف ان يفرط علينا او ان يطغىHe said: "Do not fear: I am with you both, I hear and I see."
قال لا تخافا انني معكما اسمع وارىSo go to him and say: "We are two messengers of your Guardian; send with us the Sons of Israel, and do not punish them; we have brought you a sign from your Guardian."
فاتياه فقولا انا رسولا ربك فارسل معنا بني اسرءيل ولا تعذبهم قد جينك باية من ربكPeace be upon whoever follows the guidance.
والسلم على من اتبع الهدىIt has been revealed to us that the punishment falls upon whoever denies and turns away.
انا قد اوحي الينا ان العذاب على من كذب وتولىHe said: "And who is your Guardian, Moussa?"
قال فمن ربكما يموسىHe said: "Our Guardian is the One who gave to each thing its own form, then guided it."
قال ربنا الذي اعطى كل شىء خلقه ثم هدىHe said: "And what of the former generations?"
قال فما بال القرون الاولىHe said: "Knowledge of them rests with my Guardian, in a record.
قال علمها عند ربي في كتبMy Guardian neither strays nor forgets."
لا يضل ربي ولا ينسىHe who made the earth for you a spread, and traced for you paths within it, and sent down water from the sky,
الذي جعل لكم الارض مهدا وسلك لكم فيها سبلا وانزل من السماء ماءby which We brought forth pairs of plants of every kind.
فاخرجنا به ازوجا من نبات شتىEat, and graze your cattle.
كلوا وارعوا انعمكمThere are surely in that signs for those endowed with reason.
ان في ذلك لءايت لاولي النهىFrom it We created you, into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you out yet another time.
منها خلقنكم وفيها نعيدكم ومنها نخرجكم تارة اخرىWe showed him all Our signs, but he denied and refused.
ولقد ارينه ءايتنا كلها فكذب وابىHe said: "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your illusion, Moussa? We shall surely bring you illusion to match it.
قال اجيتنا لتخرجنا من ارضنا بسحرك يموسى فلناتينك بسحر مثلهSo set between us and you an appointment, which neither we nor you shall fail, at a fair place."
فاجعل بيننا وبينك موعدا لا نخلفه نحن ولا انت مكانا سوىHe said: "Your appointment shall be the day of adornment, and that the people be gathered in broad morning."
قال موعدكم يوم الزينة وان يحشر الناس ضحىFir'awn turned away, gathered his scheme, then came.
فتولى فرعون فجمع كيده ثم اتىMoussa said to them: "Woe to you! Do not fabricate a lie against God, lest He extirpate you with a punishment."
قال لهم موسى ويلكم لا تفتروا على الله كذبا فيسحتكم بعذابAnd whoever fabricates has already failed.
وقد خاب من افترىSo they disagreed among themselves about their matter and kept their counsel secret.
فتنزعوا امرهم بينهم واسروا النجوىThey said: "These two are indeed two workers of illusion who wish to drive you out of your land with their illusion and to carry off your exemplary way.
قالوا ان هذن لسحرن يريدان ان يخرجاكم من ارضكم بسحرهما ويذهبا بطريقتكم المثلىSo gather your scheme, then come in a single rank.
فاجمعوا كيدكم ثم ايتوا صفاAnd whoever rises above shall prosper today."
وقد افلح اليوم من استعلىThey said: "Moussa, either you throw, or we shall be the first to throw."
قالوا يموسى اما ان تلقي واما ان نكون اول من القىHe said: "Rather, you throw."
قال بل القواAnd behold, their ropes and their staffs, through their illusion, appeared to him to be moving swiftly.
فاذا حبالهم وعصيهم يخيل اليه من سحرهم انها تسعىMoussa felt within himself a certain apprehension.
فاوجس في نفسه خيفة موسىWe said: "Do not fear, it is you who are the uppermost.
قلنا لا تخف انك انت الاعلىThrow what is in your right hand: it will swallow up what they have contrived.
والق ما في يمينك تلقف ما صنعواWhat they have contrived is but a worker of illusion's scheme,
انما صنعوا كيد سحرand the worker of illusion does not prosper, wherever he goes."
ولا يفلح الساحر حيث اتىSo the workers of illusion were cast down, prostrate.
فالقي السحرة سجداThey said: "We believe in the Guardian of Harun and Moussa."
قالوا ءامنا برب هرون وموسىHe said: "You gave him credit before I gave you permission! He is surely your chief, who taught you illusion.
قال ءامنتم له قبل ان ءاذن لكم انه لكبيركم الذي علمكم السحرI shall surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I shall surely crucify you on trunks of palm trees; and you shall know which of us is harsher in punishment and more lasting."
فلاقطعن ايديكم وارجلكم من خلف ولاصلبنكم في جذوع النخل ولتعلمن اينا اشد عذابا وابقىThey said: "We shall never prefer you over the clear proofs that have come to us, nor over the One who originated us.
قالوا لن نوثرك على ما جاءنا من البينت والذي فطرناSo decide whatever you are to decide:
فاقض ما انت قاضyou decide only over the present life.
انما تقضي هذه الحيوة الدنياWe believe in our Guardian, that He may forgive us our faults and the illusion to which you compelled us.
انا ءامنا بربنا ليغفر لنا خطينا وما اكرهتنا عليه من السحرAnd God is better, and more lasting."
والله خير وابقىWhoever comes to his Guardian in a state of severance, for him is Jahannam, wherein he neither dies nor lives.
انه من يات ربه مجرما فان له جهنم لا يموت فيها ولا يحيىAnd whoever comes to Him believing, having done righteous deeds — for those, the highest ranks:
ومن ياته مومنا قد عمل الصلحت فاوليك لهم الدرجت العلىgardens of permanent abode, beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally.
جنت عدن تجري من تحتها الانهر خلدين فيهاSuch is the recompense of whoever purifies himself.
وذلك جزاء من تزكىAnd We had revealed to Moussa: "Travel by night with My obedient ones, and strike out for them a dry path through the sea; do not fear being overtaken, and do not dread."
ولقد اوحينا الى موسى ان اسر بعبادي فاضرب لهم طريقا في البحر يبسا لا تخف دركا ولا تخشىSo Fir'awn pursued them with his forces, and there covered them, from the flood, that which covered them.
فاتبعهم فرعون بجنوده فغشيهم من اليم ما غشيهمAnd Fir'awn led his people astray; he did not guide them.
واضل فرعون قومه وما هدىSons of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you on the right side of the Mount, and We sent down upon you the manna and the quail.
يبني اسرءيل قد انجينكم من عدوكم ووعدنكم جانب الطور الايمن ونزلنا عليكم المن والسلوىEat of the good things We have provided you, and do not exceed the measure therein, lest My anger fall upon you;
كلوا من طيبت ما رزقنكم ولا تطغوا فيه فيحل عليكم غضبيand whoever is struck by My anger has indeed fallen.
ومن يحلل عليه غضبي فقد هوىAnd I am surely a Great Forgiver toward whoever repents, believes, does righteousness, then lets himself be led.
واني لغفار لمن تاب وءامن وعمل صلحا ثم اهتدىAnd what made you hasten away from your people, Moussa?
وما اعجلك عن قومك يموسىHe said: "There they are, close upon my tracks; and I hastened to You, Guardian, that You might be pleased."
قال هم اولاء على اثري وعجلت اليك رب لترضىHe said: "We have indeed tried your people after you, and as-Samiri has led them astray."
قال فانا قد فتنا قومك من بعدك واضلهم السامريSo Moussa returned to his people, angry and bitter.
فرجع موسى الى قومه غضبن اسفاHe said: "O my people, did your Guardian not make you a fair promise?
قال يقوم الم يعدكم ربكم وعدا حسناDid the time appointed seem too long to you, or did you wish that a wrath from your Guardian should fall upon you, that you thus broke your appointment with me?"
افطال عليكم العهد ام اردتم ان يحل عليكم غضب من ربكم فاخلفتم موعديThey said: "We did not break your appointment of our own will; but we were burdened with loads of the people's ornaments, and we cast them away, and thus did as-Samiri also throw."
قالوا ما اخلفنا موعدك بملكنا ولكنا حملنا اوزارا من زينة القوم فقذفنها فكذلك القى السامريSo he brought forth for them a calf, a lowing body, and they said: "This is your deity, and the deity of Moussa" — but he had forgotten.
فاخرج لهم عجلا جسدا له خوار فقالوا هذا الهكم واله موسى فنسيDo they not see that it returns them no word, and holds for them neither harm nor benefit?
افلا يرون الا يرجع اليهم قولا ولا يملك لهم ضرا ولا نفعاAnd Harun had indeed told them before: "O my people, you are only being tried by it;
ولقد قال لهم هرون من قبل يقوم انما فتنتم بهand indeed your Guardian is the All-Benevolent: so follow me, and obey my command."
وان ربكم الرحمن فاتبعوني واطيعوا امريThey said: "We shall not cease to remain posted by it until Moussa returns to us."
قالوا لن نبرح عليه عكفين حتى يرجع الينا موسىHe said: "Harun, what kept you, when you saw them straying, from following me? Did you then disobey my order?"
قال يهرون ما منعك اذ رايتهم ضلوا الا تتبعن افعصيت امريHe said: "Son of my mother, do not seize me by the beard nor by the head; I feared you would say: 'You have divided the Sons of Israel', and that you did not heed my word."
قال يبنوم لا تاخذ بلحيتي ولا براسي اني خشيت ان تقول فرقت بين بني اسرءيل ولم ترقب قوليHe said: "And what is your affair, Samiri?"
قال فما خطبك يسمريHe said: "I perceived what they did not perceive; so I seized a handful from the track of the messenger, then I cast it away — thus did my Self prompt me."
قال بصرت بما لم يبصروا به فقبضت قبضة من اثر الرسول فنبذتها وكذلك سولت لي نفسيHe said: "Go away then: your lot in this life shall be to say 'Touch me not',
قال فاذهب فان لك في الحيوة ان تقول لا مساسand there is set for you an appointment you shall not fail.
وان لك موعدا لن تخلفهAnd look at your deity, by which you remained posted: we shall surely burn it, then we shall surely scatter it into the flood, utterly scattered."
وانظر الى الهك الذي ظلت عليه عاكفا لنحرقنه ثم لننسفنه في اليم نسفاYour only deity is God, besides whom there is no deity,
انما الهكم الله الذي لا اله الا هوwhose knowledge embraces all things.
وسع كل شىء علماThus do We relate to you certain pieces of information about what has already passed,
كذلك نقص عليك من انباء ما قد سبقand We have given you, from Our own presence, a reminder.
وقد ءاتينك من لدنا ذكراWhoever turns away from it shall bear, on the Day of Appearance, a burden, abiding therein eternally,
من اعرض عنه فانه يحمل يوم القيمة وزرا خلدين فيهand evil will be that burden for them on the Day of Appearance!
وساء لهم يوم القيمة حملاThe day the Horn is blown, We shall gather the severed, that day, livid, whispering among themselves: "You stayed no more than ten."
يوم ينفخ في الصور ونحشر المجرمين يوميذ زرقا يتخفتون بينهم ان لبثتم الا عشراWe know best what they will say, when the most discerning of them in conduct will say: "You stayed no more than a day."
نحن اعلم بما يقولون اذ يقول امثلهم طريقة ان لبثتم الا يوماAnd they ask you about the mountains; say: "My Guardian will scatter them utterly, leaving them a level plain, wherein you will see neither hollow nor rise."
ويسلونك عن الجبال فقل ينسفها ربي نسفا فيذرها قاعا صفصفا لا ترى فيها عوجا ولا امتاThat day, they will follow the caller, with no deviation possible,
يوميذ يتبعون الداعي لا عوج لهand all voices will hush before the All-Benevolent; you will hear nothing but a murmur.
وخشعت الاصوات للرحمن فلا تسمع الا همساThat day, intercession will not avail, except for him whom the All-Benevolent permits, and whose word He is pleased to accept.
يوميذ لا تنفع الشفعة الا من اذن له الرحمن ورضي له قولاHe knows what is before them and what is behind them, while they do not encompass Him in their knowledge.
يعلم ما بين ايديهم وما خلفهم ولا يحيطون به علماAnd all faces will humble themselves before the Living, the Sustainer,
وعنت الوجوه للحى القيومand whoever bears an injustice will indeed have failed.
وقد خاب من حمل ظلماAnd whoever does righteous deeds, being a believer, shall fear neither injustice nor deprivation.
ومن يعمل من الصلحت وهو مومن فلا يخاف ظلما ولا هضماThus have We sent it down, a flawless Recitation, and We have varied therein the threat, that they may guard themselves, or that it may awaken in them a remembrance.
وكذلك انزلنه قرءانا عربيا وصرفنا فيه من الوعيد لعلهم يتقون او يحدث لهم ذكراSo exalted be God, the Sovereign, the Truth!
فتعلى الله الملك الحقAnd do not hasten with the Recitation before its revelation is completed for you,
ولا تعجل بالقرءان من قبل ان يقضى اليك وحيهand say: "My Guardian, increase me in knowledge."
وقل رب زدني علماAnd We had already made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot, and We found in him no firm resolve.
ولقد عهدنا الى ءادم من قبل فنسي ولم نجد له عزماAnd when We said to the Agents: "Prostrate before Adam", they prostrated,
واذ قلنا للمليكة اسجدوا لءادم فسجدواsave the Despairing One [Iblis], who refused.
الا ابليس ابىSo We said: "Adam, this is indeed an enemy to you and to your spouse; let him not drive you both out of the Garden, or you would toil.
فقلنا يادم ان هذا عدو لك ولزوجك فلا يخرجنكما من الجنة فتشقىYou have therein the assurance that you will not go hungry nor be unclothed,
ان لك الا تجوع فيها ولا تعرىnor that you will thirst therein, nor be exposed to the sun."
وانك لا تظموا فيها ولا تضحىThen the Diverter whispered to him,
فوسوس اليه الشيطنhe said: "Adam, shall I point you to the tree of everlastingness and a dominion that does not decay?"
قال يادم هل ادلك على شجرة الخلد وملك لا يبلىSo they both ate from it, and their nakedness became apparent to them, and they both set about covering themselves with leaves from the Garden.
فاكلا منها فبدت لهما سوءتهما وطفقا يخصفان عليهما من ورق الجنةAnd Adam disobeyed his Guardian, and was misled.
وعصى ءادم ربه فغوىThen his Guardian chose him, turned toward him, and guided him.
ثم اجتبه ربه فتاب عليه وهدىHe said: "Go down from it, both of you, together,
قال اهبطا منها جميعاyou will be enemies to one another.
بعضكم لبعض عدوAnd should guidance come to you from Me, then whoever follows My guidance shall neither stray nor toil;
فاما ياتينكم مني هدى فمن اتبع هداي فلا يضل ولا يشقىand whoever turns away from My remembrance shall have a straitened existence, and We shall gather him blind on the Day of Appearance."
ومن اعرض عن ذكري فان له معيشة ضنكا ونحشره يوم القيمة اعمىHe will say: "My Guardian, why have You gathered me blind, when I used to see?"
قال رب لم حشرتني اعمى وقد كنت بصيراHe will say: "Thus it is: Our signs came to you, and you forgot them;
قال كذلك اتتك ءايتنا فنسيتهاand thus, today, you are forgotten."
وكذلك اليوم تنسىThus do We recompense whoever has committed excess and has not believed in the signs of his Guardian;
وكذلك نجزي من اسرف ولم يومن بايت ربهand the punishment of the last life is harsher and more lasting.
ولعذاب الءاخرة اشد وابقىHas it not become clear to them how many generations We annihilated before them, in whose dwellings they now walk?
افلم يهد لهم كم اهلكنا قبلهم من القرون يمشون في مسكنهمThere are surely in that signs for those endowed with reason.
ان في ذلك لءايت لاولي النهىAnd had it not been for a word that preceded from your Guardian, it would have been inevitable, and a term already set.
ولولا كلمة سبقت من ربك لكان لزاما واجل مسمىSo be patient over what they say,
فاصبر على ما يقولونand glorify, with praise, your Guardian, before the rising of the sun and before its setting;
وسبح بحمد ربك قبل طلوع الشمس وقبل غروبهاand glorify Him during some hours of the night, and at the edges of the day, that you may be well-pleased.
ومن ءاناي اليل فسبح واطراف النهار لعلك ترضىAnd do not stretch your eyes toward what We have granted some of them to enjoy — the flower of the present life — that We may try them therein;
ولا تمدن عينيك الى ما متعنا به ازوجا منهم زهرة الحيوة الدنيا لنفتنهم فيهand the provision of your Guardian is better, and more lasting.
ورزق ربك خير وابقىOrder your household to the Contact, and be steadfast in it:
وامر اهلك بالصلوة واصطبر عليهاWe ask no provision of you,
لا نسلك رزقاit is We who provide for you;
نحن نرزقكand the outcome belongs to guardedness.
والعقبة للتقوىAnd they said: "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Guardian?"
وقالوا لولا ياتينا باية من ربهHas there not come to them the clear proof of what is in the former pages?
اولم تاتهم بينة ما في الصحف الاولىAnd had We annihilated them with a punishment before this, they would have said: "Our Guardian, why did You not send to us a messenger, that we might have followed Your signs before we were humbled and disgraced?"
ولو انا اهلكنهم بعذاب من قبله لقالوا ربنا لولا ارسلت الينا رسولا فنتبع ءايتك من قبل ان نذل ونخزىSay: "Each one waits in expectation; so wait, then:
قل كل متربص فتربصواyou shall soon know who are the companions of the even path, and who has let himself be guided."
فستعلمون من اصحب الصرط السوي ومن اهتدى
