Al-Hajj
Neither Their Meat nor Their Blood
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O mankind, guard yourselves against your Guardian,
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم يايها الناس اتقوا ربكمfor the tremor of the Hour is an immense thing.
ان زلزلة الساعة شىء عظيمThe Day you see it, every woman with a child in her care will forget the child she was caring for, and every pregnant one will deliver her burden, and you will see mankind as if drunk, though they are not drunk — but the punishment of God is severe.
يوم ترونها تذهل كل مرضعة عما ارضعت وتضع كل ذات حمل حملها وترى الناس سكرى وما هم بسكرى ولكن عذاب الله شديدAnd among mankind is he who argues about God without knowledge and follows every rebellious Diverter, for whom it has been decreed that whoever takes him as an ally, he will misguide him and guide him to the punishment of the Inferno.
ومن الناس من يجدل في الله بغير علم ويتبع كل شيطن مريد كتب عليه انه من تولاه فانه يضله ويهديه الى عذاب السعيرO mankind, if you are in doubt about the Raising, then indeed We created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed, that We may make things clear to you.
يايها الناس ان كنتم في ريب من البعث فانا خلقنكم من تراب ثم من نطفة ثم من علقة ثم من مضغة مخلقة وغير مخلقة لنبين لكمAnd We settle in the wombs whatever We will until an appointed term,
ونقر في الارحام ما نشاء الى اجل مسمىthen We bring you out as a child, that you may then reach your full maturity.
ثم نخرجكم طفلا ثم لتبلغوا اشدكمAnd among you is he who is kept faithfully [early], and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit age, so that he knows nothing after having known [much].
ومنكم من يتوفى ومنكم من يرد الى ارذل العمر لكيلا يعلم من بعد علم شياAnd you see the earth barren, but when We send down water upon it, it stirs, swells, and grows every splendid pair.
وترى الارض هامدة فاذا انزلنا عليها الماء اهتزت وربت وانبتت من كل زوج بهيجThat is because God is the Truth, He gives life to the dead, He is capable of all things, the Hour is coming — no doubt about it — and God will raise up those who are in the graves.
ذلك بان الله هو الحق وانه يحي الموتى وانه على كل شىء قدير وان الساعة ءاتية لا ريب فيها وان الله يبعث من في القبورAnd among mankind is he who argues about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Scripture, turning his side away in arrogance, to lead [others] astray from the way of God.
ومن الناس من يجدل في الله بغير علم ولا هدى ولا كتب منير ثاني عطفه ليضل عن سبيل اللهFor him is disgrace in the present life,
له في الدنيا خزيand We will make him taste, on the Day of Appearance, the punishment of the burning fire.
ونذيقه يوم القيمة عذاب الحريقThat is for what your hands have prepared; and God is not unjust to the constrained [under compulsion].
ذلك بما قدمت يداك وان الله ليس بظلم للعبيدAnd among mankind is he who obeys God in a distorted manner: if good befalls him, he is content with it, but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face — losing both the present life and the last life.
ومن الناس من يعبد الله على حرف فان اصابه خير اطمان به وان اصابته فتنة انقلب على وجهه خسر الدنيا والءاخرةThat is the manifest loss.
ذلك هو الخسران المبينHe calls upon, besides God, that which can neither harm him nor benefit him.
يدعوا من دون الله ما لا يضره وما لا ينفعهThat is indeed far-reaching error — he calls upon
ذلك هو الضلل البعيد يدعواone whose harm is nearer than his benefit. What a wretched guarantor, and what a wretched companion!
لمن ضره اقرب من نفعه لبيس المولى ولبيس العشيرIndeed, God admits those who have believed and done righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow.
ان الله يدخل الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها الانهرIndeed, God does what He wills.
ان الله يفعل ما يريدWhoever thinks that God will never help him in the present life and the last life, let him extend a link toward the sky, then let him withdraw from it, then let him wait and look whether his scheme removes what enrages him.
من كان يظن ان لن ينصره الله في الدنيا والءاخرة فليمدد بسبب الى السماء ثم ليقطع فلينظر هل يذهبن كيده ما يغيظThus have We sent it down as clear signs,
وكذلك انزلنه ءايت بينتand [know] that God guides whom He wills.
وان الله يهدي من يريدThose who have believed, the Reoriented, the Aspirants, the Helpers, the Magians, and those who ascribe partners to God — God will separate between them on the Day of Appearance.
ان الذين ءامنوا والذين هادوا والصبين والنصرى والمجوس والذين اشركوا ان الله يفصل بينهم يوم القيمةIndeed, God is witness over all things.
ان الله على كل شىء شهيدHave you not seen that to God prostrate whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the living beings, and many among mankind?
الم تر ان الله يسجد له من في السموت ومن في الارض والشمس والقمر والنجوم والجبال والشجر والدواب وكثير من الناسAnd upon many [others], the punishment has proven true.
وكثير حق عليه العذابAnd whoever God degrades has none to honor him.
ومن يهن الله فما له من مكرمIndeed, God does what He wills.
ان الله يفعل ما يشاءThese are two opposing parties who have quarreled concerning their Guardian.
هذان خصمان اختصموا في ربهمThose who disown will have clothes of fire cut out for them; boiling water will be poured over their heads, melting what is in their bellies as well as their skins.
فالذين كفروا قطعت لهم ثياب من نار يصب من فوق رءوسهم الحميم يصهر به ما في بطونهم والجلودAnd for them are maces of iron.
ولهم مقمع من حديدEvery time they wish to come out of it, out of anguish, they will be returned to it:
كلما ارادوا ان يخرجوا منها من غم اعيدوا فيها"Taste the punishment of the burning fire!"
وذوقوا عذاب الحريقIndeed, God admits those who have believed and done righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow; they will be ornamented therein with bracelets of gold and pearls,
ان الله يدخل الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها الانهر يحلون فيها من اساور من ذهب ولولواand their garments therein will be of silk.
ولباسهم فيها حريرAnd they were guided to the good in saying,
وهدوا الى الطيب من القولand they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.
وهدوا الى صرط الحميدIndeed, those who disown and turn [people] away from the way of God and from the inviolable place of prostration, which We made for the people equally, whether one dwells there or is passing through —
ان الذين كفروا ويصدون عن سبيل الله والمسجد الحرام الذي جعلنه للناس سواء العكف فيه والبادand whoever intends therein a deviation through injustice, We will make him taste a painful punishment.
ومن يرد فيه بالحاد بظلم نذقه من عذاب اليمAnd remember when We established for Ibrahim the site of the House: "Do not associate anything with Me,
واذ بوانا لابرهيم مكان البيت ان لا تشرك بي شياand purify My House for those who frequent it, those who maintain it, and those who kneel in service and submit [in allegiance]."
وطهر بيتي للطايفين والقايمين والركع السجودAnd proclaim to mankind the Hajj: they will come to you on foot and on every lean mount, coming from every distant, deep-cut path, to witness the benefits [granted] to them and to mention the name of God on known days over the livestock beasts He has provided them.
واذن في الناس بالحج ياتوك رجالا وعلى كل ضامر ياتين من كل فج عميق ليشهدوا منفع لهم ويذكروا اسم الله في ايام معلومت على ما رزقهم من بهيمة الانعمSo eat of it and feed the distressed, the poor.
فكلوا منها واطعموا البايس الفقيرThen let them put an end to their unkempt state, be faithful to their commitments, and frequent the freed House.
ثم ليقضوا تفثهم وليوفوا نذورهم وليطوفوا بالبيت العتيقThat is so.
ذلكAnd whoever magnifies the sacred prohibitions of God, it is better for him with his Guardian.
ومن يعظم حرمت الله فهو خير له عند ربهAnd lawful to you is the cattle, except what is recited to you:
واحلت لكم الانعم الا ما يتلى عليكمso avoid the defilement of idols, and avoid the saying of falsification, wholly turned toward God, associating nothing with Him.
فاجتنبوا الرجس من الاوثن واجتنبوا قول الزور حنفاء لله غير مشركين بهAnd whoever associates [others] with God, it is as though he had fallen from the sky, and the birds snatch him away, or the wind sweeps him down into a far-off place.
ومن يشرك بالله فكانما خر من السماء فتخطفه الطير او تهوي به الريح في مكان سحيقThat is so.
ذلكAnd whoever magnifies the perceptible markers of God — that is part of the guardedness of the cores.
ومن يعظم شعير الله فانها من تقوى القلوبFor you in them are benefits until an appointed term; then their place of release is at the freed House.
لكم فيها منفع الى اجل مسمى ثم محلها الى البيت العتيقAnd for every community We have assigned a beneficent practice, that they may mention the name of God over the livestock beasts He has provided them.
ولكل امة جعلنا منسكا ليذكروا اسم الله على ما رزقهم من بهيمة الانعمSo your deity is a single deity.
فالهكم اله وحدSo to Him alone be true.
فله اسلمواAnd give good news to those who lower themselves, whose cores tremble when God is mentioned, who are patient over what befalls them, who maintain the Contact, and who spend from what We have provided them.
وبشر المخبتين الذين اذا ذكر الله وجلت قلوبهم والصبرين على ما اصابهم والمقيمي الصلوة ومما رزقنهم ينفقونAnd the sacrificial animals — We have made them for you among the perceptible markers of God; in them is good for you.
والبدن جعلنها لكم من شعير الله لكم فيها خيرSo mention the name of God over them, while they are lined up in rows;
فاذكروا اسم الله عليها صوافthen when their flanks fall [to the ground], eat of them and feed the one who is content without asking and the one who asks.
فاذا وجبت جنوبها فكلوا منها واطعموا القانع والمعترThus have We subjected them to you, that you may be grateful.
كذلك سخرنها لكم لعلكم تشكرونNeither their flesh nor their blood reaches God, but the guardedness from you reaches Him.
لن ينال الله لحومها ولا دماوها ولكن يناله التقوى منكمThus has He subjected them to you, that you may magnify God for having guided you.
كذلك سخرها لكم لتكبروا الله على ما هدىكمAnd give good news to those who do good.
وبشر المحسنينIndeed, God defends those who believe.
ان الله يدفع عن الذين ءامنواIndeed, God does not love any grand traitor, grand disowner.
ان الله لا يحب كل خوان كفورPermission is given to those who are being fought, because they have been wronged —
اذن للذين يقتلون بانهم ظلمواand God is surely able to help them.
وان الله على نصرهم لقديرthose who were expelled from their abodes without right, only because they said, "Our Guardian is God."
الذين اخرجوا من ديرهم بغير حق الا ان يقولوا ربنا اللهAnd were it not for God's defense of people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished hermitages, churches, synagogues, and places of prostration wherein the name of God is much mentioned.
ولولا دفع الله الناس بعضهم ببعض لهدمت صومع وبيع وصلوت ومسجد يذكر فيها اسم الله كثيراAnd God will surely help whoever helps Him —
ولينصرن الله من ينصرهGod is surely the Strong, the All-Powerful.
ان الله لقوي عزيزthose who, if We establish them in the land, maintain the Contact, render the purifying alms, enjoin what is recognized [by custom], and forbid what is disavowed.
الذين ان مكنهم في الارض اقاموا الصلوة وءاتوا الزكوة وامروا بالمعروف ونهوا عن المنكرAnd to God belongs the outcome of all affairs.
ولله عقبة الامورAnd if they deny you, before them the people of Nuh, the Recidivists [Aad], the Depleters [Thamud], the people of Ibrahim, the people of Lut, and the people of Madyan denied —
وان يكذبوك فقد كذبت قبلهم قوم نوح وعاد وثمود وقوم ابرهيم وقوم لوط واصحب مدينand Moussa too was denied.
وكذب موسىSo I granted a delay to those who disowned, then I seized them:
فامليت للكفرين ثم اخذتهمand how was My disavowal!
فكيف كان نكيرHow many a city have We annihilated while it was committing injustice: they now stand empty despite their edifices, with an abandoned well and a lofty, deserted palace!
فكاين من قرية اهلكنها وهي ظالمة فهي خاوية على عروشها وبير معطلة وقصر مشيدHave they not traveled through the land, so as to have cores with which to reason, or ears with which to hear?
افلم يسيروا في الارض فتكون لهم قلوب يعقلون بها او ءاذان يسمعون بهاFor it is indeed not the eyes that are blind, but rather the cores that are within the chests.
فانها لا تعمى الابصر ولكن تعمى القلوب التي في الصدورAnd they urge you to hasten the punishment,
ويستعجلونك بالعذابthough God will never fail His promise.
ولن يخلف الله وعدهAnd indeed, a day with your Guardian is like a thousand years of those you count.
وان يوما عند ربك كالف سنة مما تعدونAnd how many a city to which I granted a delay while it was committing injustice, then I seized it —
وكاين من قرية امليت لها وهي ظالمة ثم اخذتهاand to Me is the destination.
والى المصيرSay, "O mankind, I am only a clear warner to you."
قل يايها الناس انما انا لكم نذير مبينSo those who have believed and done righteous deeds will have forgiveness and generous provision.
فالذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت لهم مغفرة ورزق كريمBut those who strive against Our signs, seeking to thwart [them], those are the companions of the Blaze.
والذين سعوا في ءايتنا معجزين اوليك اصحب الجحيمAnd We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he had a wish, the Diverter would insert something into it. God then transcribes what the Diverter inserts, and He affirms His signs — God is All-Knowing, Wise — so that this transcription may be a trial for those in whose cores is a sickness and whose cores are hardened.
وما ارسلنا من قبلك من رسول ولا نبي الا اذا تمنى القى الشيطن في امنيته فينسخ الله ما يلقي الشيطن ثم يحكم الله ءايته والله عليم حكيم ليجعل ما يلقي الشيطن فتنة للذين في قلوبهم مرض والقاسية قلوبهمAnd surely, the wrongdoers are in a deep rupture.
وان الظلمين لفي شقاق بعيدAnd so that those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Guardian, and believe in it, and their cores lower themselves before it.
وليعلم الذين اوتوا العلم انه الحق من ربك فيومنوا به فتخبت له قلوبهمAnd indeed, God surely guides those who believe to a straight path.
وان الله لهاد الذين ءامنوا الى صرط مستقيمAnd those who disown will not cease to be in doubt of it until the Hour comes upon them unexpectedly, or there comes to them the punishment of a barren day.
ولا يزال الذين كفروا في مرية منه حتى تاتيهم الساعة بغتة او ياتيهم عذاب يوم عقيمThe dominion, that Day, belongs to God.
الملك يوميذ للهHe will judge between them.
يحكم بينهمSo those who believed and did righteous deeds will be in gardens of bliss.
فالذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت في جنت النعيمAnd those who disowned and denied Our signs — those will have a degrading punishment.
والذين كفروا وكذبوا بايتنا فاوليك لهم عذاب مهينAnd those who emigrated in the way of God and then were killed or died — God will surely provide them with a good provision.
والذين هاجروا في سبيل الله ثم قتلوا او ماتوا ليرزقنهم الله رزقا حسناAnd indeed, God is surely the best of providers.
وان الله لهو خير الرزقينHe will surely admit them to an entrance with which they will be pleased.
ليدخلنهم مدخلا يرضونهAnd surely, God is All-Knowing, Forbearing.
وان الله لعليم حليمThat is so.
ذلكAnd whoever pays back in kind to the exact measure of what was done to him, and then is aggressed against again — God will surely help him.
ومن عاقب بمثل ما عوقب به ثم بغي عليه لينصرنه اللهIndeed, God is surely the One who effaces, Most-Forgiving.
ان الله لعفو غفورThat is because God causes the night to enter into the day and the day to enter into the night, and because God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
ذلك بان الله يولج اليل في النهار ويولج النهار في اليل وان الله سميع بصيرThat is because God is the Truth, and what you invoke besides Him is falsehood, and because God is the Most High, the Great.
ذلك بان الله هو الحق وان ما يدعون من دونه هو البطل وان الله هو العلي الكبيرHave you not seen that God sends down water from the sky, and the earth becomes green?
الم تر ان الله انزل من السماء ماء فتصبح الارض مخضرةIndeed, God is Subtle, Informed.
ان الله لطيف خبيرTo Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
له ما في السموت وما في الارضAnd indeed, God is surely the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
وان الله لهو الغني الحميدHave you not seen that God has subjected to you whatever is on the earth, and the ship which sails through the sea by His command?
الم تر ان الله سخر لكم ما في الارض والفلك تجري في البحر بامرهAnd He withholds the sky from falling upon the earth, except by His permission.
ويمسك السماء ان تقع على الارض الا باذنهGod is surely, toward mankind, full of kindness, Benevolent.
ان الله بالناس لرءوف رحيمAnd it is He who gave you life, then will cause you to die,
وهو الذي احياكم ثم يميتكمthen will give you life again.
ثم يحييكمIndeed, the human being is surely a great disowner.
ان الانسن لكفورFor every community We have assigned a beneficent practice which it carries out.
لكل امة جعلنا منسكا هم ناسكوهSo let them not contest with you concerning the matter,
فلا ينزعنك في الامرand call to your Guardian,
وادع الى ربكfor you are surely upon straight guidance.
انك لعلى هدى مستقيمAnd if they argue with you, say, "God knows best what you do.
وان جدلوك فقل الله اعلم بما تعملونGod will judge between you on the Day of Appearance concerning that in which you used to differ."
الله يحكم بينكم يوم القيمة فيما كنتم فيه تختلفونDo you not know that God knows whatever is in the heaven and the earth?
الم تعلم ان الله يعلم ما في السماء والارضIndeed, that is in a record:
ان ذلك في كتبthat is indeed easy for God.
ان ذلك على الله يسيرAnd they obey, besides God, that for which He has sent down no authority and of which they have no knowledge.
ويعبدون من دون الله ما لم ينزل به سلطنا وما ليس لهم به علمAnd for the wrongdoers there is no helper.
وما للظلمين من نصيرAnd when Our clear signs are recited to them, you recognize disavowal on the faces of those who disown; they nearly assault those who recite Our signs to them.
واذا تتلى عليهم ءايتنا بينت تعرف في وجوه الذين كفروا المنكر يكادون يسطون بالذين يتلون عليهم ءايتناSay, "Shall I inform you of something worse than that?
قل افانبيكم بشر من ذلكمThe Fire, which God has promised to those who disown —
النار وعدها الله الذين كفرواand what an evil destination!"
وبيس المصيرO mankind! An example has been put forth, so listen to it:
يايها الناس ضرب مثل فاستمعوا لهindeed, those you invoke besides God will never create a fly, even if they gathered together for that.
ان الذين تدعون من دون الله لن يخلقوا ذبابا ولو اجتمعوا لهAnd if the fly should snatch away something from them, they could not recover it from it.
وان يسلبهم الذباب شيا لا يستنقذوه منهWeak are the seeker and the sought!
ضعف الطالب والمطلوبThey did not measure God with His true measure.
ما قدروا الله حق قدرهGod is surely the Strong, the All-Powerful.
ان الله لقوي عزيزGod chooses from the Agents messengers, and from mankind [as well].
الله يصطفي من المليكة رسلا ومن الناسIndeed, God is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
ان الله سميع بصيرHe knows what is before them and what is behind them.
يعلم ما بين ايديهم وما خلفهمAnd it is to God that all matters return.
والى الله ترجع الامورO you who have believed! Kneel, prostrate, obey your Guardian, and do good, that you may succeed.
يايها الذين ءامنوا اركعوا واسجدوا واعبدوا ربكم وافعلوا الخير لعلكم تفلحونAnd strive for God with the striving due to Him.
وجهدوا في الله حق جهادهIt is He who has chosen you,
هو اجتبىكمand He has not placed upon you, in the Law, any hardship —
وما جعل عليكم في الدين من حرج[it is] the way of your father Ibrahim.
ملة ابيكم ابرهيمIt is He who named you the true [obedient ones of God] before, and in this [Recitation], so that the messenger may be a witness over you, and that you may be witnesses over mankind.
هو سمىكم المسلمين من قبل وفي هذا ليكون الرسول شهيدا عليكم وتكونوا شهداء على الناسSo maintain the Contact and render the purifying alms,
فاقيموا الصلوة وءاتوا الزكوةand hold fast to God:
واعتصموا باللهHe is your nearest Guarantor —
هو مولىكمwhat an excellent Guarantor,
فنعم المولىand what an excellent helper!
ونعم النصير
