Al-Ma'ida
Keep Your Contracts
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. O you who have believed! keep your contracts.
Lawful for you are the livestock beasts, except what is recited to you — without permitting yourselves the [land] hunt, during the inviolable months.
God decides what He wills.
O you who have believed! do not make licit the perceptible markers of God, nor the inviolable month, nor the voluntary offerings, nor the vow-bound offerings, nor those heading toward the Inviolable House, seeking a favor from their Guardian and a good pleasure.
And once these months have passed, hunt.
And let not the hatred of a people, for having turned you away from the inviolable place of prostration, drive you to aggression.
Help one another in virtue and guardedness,
وتعاونوا على البر والتقوىand do not help one another in transgression and hostility.
Guard yourselves toward God:
God is indeed severe in sanction.
Forbidden to you are: the dead animal, blood, the flesh of swine, that which has been consecrated to other than God, the strangled animal, the animal on the brink of death, the animal in a declining state from illness, the animal dead from a blow of the horn, and what a wild beast has devoured — except what you have purified by fire — as well as the animal slaughtered in common whose shares are then drawn by lot with arrows.
That is an overstepping.
ذلكم فسقToday, those who disown have lost hope of your Law;
اليوم ييس الذين كفروا من دينكمso do not fear them, but fear Me.
Today, I have perfected for you your Law, I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved for you being true to God alone as your Law.
But whoever is compelled by hunger, without inclination to transgression — God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
They ask you: what is made lawful for them?
Say: "Lawful for you are the good things, as well as what you have taught your trained hunting animals, instructing them from what God has taught you.
So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of God over it.
And guard yourselves toward God:
God is indeed swift in reckoning."
Today, the good things are made lawful for you. The food of those to whom the Scripture was given is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And the women protected by the marital bond among the believers, and the women protected by the marital bond among those to whom the Scripture was given before you, [are lawful for you] when you give them their rewards, as men who commit to the marital bond, not in debauchery nor as takers of secret lovers.
And whoever disowns the faith, his deed collapses, and he will be, in the last life, among the losers.
O you who have believed! when you rise for the Contact, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your heads with wet hands,
يايها الذين ءامنوا اذا قمتم الى الصلوة فاغسلوا وجوهكم وايديكم الى المرافق وامسحوا برءوسكمand your feet up to the knees.
And if you have soiled yourselves [relieving a need], wash yourselves.
And if you are sick, or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have known a woman in intimacy, and you find no water, then resort to clean earth, and wipe your faces and your hands with it.
God does not want to impose any hardship on you,
ما يريد الله ليجعل عليكم من حرجbut He wants to purify you, and to complete His blessing upon you, perhaps you will be grateful.
And remember God's blessing upon you, and His solemn engagement, by which He bound you, when you said: "We have heard and we have obeyed."
And guard yourselves toward God:
God is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
O you who have believed! be firm supporters for God, bearing witness with equity,
يايها الذين ءامنوا كونوا قومين لله شهداء بالقسطand let not the hatred of a people drive you to not be just.
Be just: it is closer to guardedness.
And guard yourselves toward God:
God is indeed Informed of what you do.
God has promised those who have believed and done righteous deeds: they will have a forgiveness and an immense reward.
And those who have disowned and denied Our signs — those are the companions of the Blaze.
O you who have believed! remember God's blessing upon you, when a people had resolved to lay hands on you, and He held their hands back from you.
And guard yourselves toward God:
واتقوا اللهit is upon God that the believers should rely.
God has indeed taken the solemn engagement of the Sons of Israel, and We raised up, among them, twelve leaders.
And God said: "I am with you.
If you maintain the Contact, give the purifying alms, believe in My messengers, support them, and make God a beautiful loan, I will certainly cover your evil deeds, and I will certainly admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow.
But whoever among you disowns after that has strayed from the straight path."
For having violated their solemn engagement, We cursed them and made their cores hard: they displace words from their context, and have forgotten a part of what they had been reminded of.
And you will not cease to discover among them a betrayal, except a small number of them.
So efface [their fault] and overlook:
God indeed loves those who do good.
ان الله يحب المحسنينAnd among those who said: "We are the Helpers", We took their solemn engagement, but they forgot a part of what they had been reminded of; We then stirred up among them enmity and hatred, until the Day of Appearance;
ومن الذين قالوا انا نصرى اخذنا ميثقهم فنسوا حظا مما ذكروا به فاغرينا بينهم العداوة والبغضاء الى يوم القيمةand God will soon inform them of what they used to do.
O people of the Scripture! Our messenger has indeed come to you, making clear to you much of what you were hiding of the Scripture, and effacing much [else].
A light has indeed come to you from God, as well as a clear Scripture, by which God guides whoever follows His good pleasure toward the paths of peace,
قد جاءكم من الله نور وكتب مبين يهدي به الله من اتبع رضونه سبل السلمand brings them out of the darknesses toward the light, with His permission,
ويخرجهم من الظلمت الى النور باذنهand guides them to a straight path.
They have indeed disowned, those who said: "God, that is Al-Massih, son of Maryam."
Say: "Who then would hold any power against God, if He willed to annihilate Al-Massih, son of Maryam, and his mother, and all those on the earth?"
To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and of what is between them.
He creates what He wills.
God is capable of all things.
And the Reoriented and the Helpers said: "We are the sons of God and His beloved."
Say: "Why then does He punish you for your offenses?
You are rather humans, among those He created.
He forgives whom He wills, and He punishes whom He wills."
To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and of what is between them,
ولله ملك السموت والارض وما بينهماand to Him is the destination.
O people of the Scripture! Our messenger has indeed come to you, making [the truth] clear after a break in messengers, lest you say: "No bearer of good tidings nor warner has come to us" — a bearer of good tidings and a warner has thus indeed come to you.
God is capable of all things.
And remember when Moussa said to his people: "O my people! remember God's blessing upon you, when He placed among you prophets, and made you kings,
واذ قال موسى لقومه يقوم اذكروا نعمة الله عليكم اذ جعل فيكم انبياء وجعلكم ملوكاand gave you what He gave to none other among all beings.
O my people! enter the sanctified land that God has destined for you,
يقوم ادخلوا الارض المقدسة التي كتب الله لكمand do not turn back, lest you be returned as losers."
They said: "O Moussa! there is there a people of tyrants,
قالوا يموسى ان فيها قوما جبارينand we will indeed not enter it until they have left it;
وانا لن ندخلها حتى يخرجوا منهاif they leave it, then we will enter it."
فان يخرجوا منها فانا دخلونTwo men, among those who feared [God], to whom God had granted His blessing, said: "Enter upon them by the gate;
قال رجلان من الذين يخافون انعم الله عليهما ادخلوا عليهم البابonce you have entered it, you will indeed be the victors.
And it is upon God that you should rely, if you are believers."
They said: "O Moussa! we will never enter it, as long as they remain there; go, then, you and your Guardian, and fight, both of you; we, we will stay here, sitting."
He said: "My Guardian, I hold power only over my own Self
قال رب اني لا املك الا نفسيand my brother;
واخيso separate us from the people of the oversteppers."
He said: "It is, then, forbidden to them, forever,
قال فانها محرمة عليهمforty years, wandering on the earth.
So do not lament for the people of the oversteppers."
And recite to them, in truth, the information of the two sons of Adam, when each offered an offering: it was accepted from one, and was not accepted from the other.
The latter said: "I will certainly kill you."
The former said: "God accepts only from those who guard themselves.
قال انما يتقبل الله من المتقينIf you stretch out your hand toward me to kill me, I will not stretch out my hand toward you to kill you;
I fear God, Guardian of all beings.
I want you to return burdened with my transgression and yours, and to be among the companions of the Fire:
اني اريد ان تبوا باثمي واثمك فتكون من اصحب النارthat is the recompense of the wrongdoers."
But his own Self disposed him to the murder of his brother; he killed him, and thus became among the losers.
God then sent a raven, which scratched the earth, to show him how to conceal his brother's nakedness.
He said: "Woe to me! am I unable to be like this raven, and to conceal my brother's nakedness?" And he then became among those who regret.
That is why We prescribed for the Sons of Israel that whoever kills a Self, without it being for [another] Self, or for corruption on the earth, it is as if he had killed all mankind together,
كتبنا على بني اسرءيل انه من قتل نفسا بغير نفس او فساد في الارض فكانما قتل الناس جميعاand whoever gives life to one [Self], it is as if he had given life to all mankind together.
Our messengers indeed came to them with clear proofs; then many of them, after that, are indeed excessive on the earth.
The only recompense of those who wage war against God and His messenger, and strive to sow corruption on the earth, is that they be massacred, or crucified, or have their hands and feet cut off on opposite sides, or be banished from the earth.
That is for them a disgrace in the present life,
ذلك لهم خزي في الدنياand they will have, in the last life, an immense punishment — except those who turn back [to God] before you have power over them; know then that God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
O you who have believed! guard yourselves toward God, seek toward Him the means [of nearness], and strive in His way, perhaps you will succeed.
Those who disown, were they to possess all that is on earth, and its equivalent with it, to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Appearance, it would not be accepted from them,
They will want to leave the Fire, but they will not leave it,
يريدون ان يخرجوا من النار وما هم بخرجين منهاand they will have a lasting punishment.
And as for the thief, male and female, stop their supports, as a recompense for what they have earned, as an exemplary punishment from God.
God is All-Powerful, Wise.
But whoever turns back [to God] after his injustice, and reforms, God turns toward him with clemency.
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth?
He punishes whom He wills, and He forgives whom He wills.
God is capable of all things.
O messenger! let not those grieve you who hasten into disowning, among those who say: "We have believed" with their mouths, without their cores having believed,
يايها الرسول لا يحزنك الذين يسرعون في الكفر من الذين قالوا ءامنا بافوههم ولم تومن قلوبهمnor among the Reoriented, listeners to falsehood, listeners on behalf of another people who has not come to you.
They displace words from their context, saying: "If you are given this, take it; and if you are not given it, beware."
And whoever God wants to put to the trial, you hold nothing for him against God.
Those are the ones whose cores God has not wanted to purify.
They have, in the present life, a disgrace,
لهم في الدنيا خزيand they will have, in the last life, an immense punishment.
Listeners to falsehood, devourers of illicit gain —
سمعون للكذب اكلون للسحتif they come to you, judge between them, then, or turn away from them;
فان جاءوك فاحكم بينهم او اعرض عنهمand if you turn away from them, they cannot harm you at all.
And if you judge, judge then between them with equity:
God indeed loves the equitable.
And how would they take you as judge, when they have the Tawrah, wherein is the judgment of God, and then they turn away from it?
These are not believers.
We indeed sent down the Tawrah, wherein is guidance and light; the prophets, who were true to God alone, judged by it the Reoriented, as did the spiritual masters and the rabbis, according to what they were entrusted to guard of God's Scripture, and they were witnesses to it.
So do not fear people, but fear Me,
فلا تخشوا الناس واخشونand do not buy, with My signs, a paltry price.
And those who do not judge according to what God has sent down — those are the disowners.
And We prescribed for them, in it: the Self in exchange for the Self, the eye in exchange for the eye, the nose in exchange for the nose, the ear in exchange for the ear, the tooth in exchange for the tooth, and for wounds, an investigation.
But whoever forgoes it as charity, it serves as an expiation for him.
And those who do not judge according to what God has sent down — those are the wrongdoers.
And We made Issa, son of Maryam, follow in their footsteps, confirming what, of the Tawrah, preceded him,
وقفينا على ءاثرهم بعيسى ابن مريم مصدقا لما بين يديه من التورىةand We gave him the Injil, wherein is guidance and light, confirming what, of the Tawrah, preceded him, and a guidance and an admonition for those who guard themselves.
And let the people of the Injil judge according to what God sent down in it.
And those who do not judge according to what God has sent down — those are the oversteppers.
And We have sent down to you the Scripture, in truth, confirming what, of the Scripture, preceded it, and prevailing over it.
Judge, then, between them according to what God has sent down,
فاحكم بينهم بما انزل اللهand do not follow their emotions, forsaking what has come to you of the truth.
To each of you, We have assigned a law and a way.
لكل جعلنا منكم شرعة ومنهاجاAnd had God willed, He would have made you one community;
ولو شاء الله لجعلكم امة وحدةbut [He did not], so as to test you in what He has given you.
Race, then, to good deeds.
To God will be your return, all together, and He will inform you of what you used to differ over.
And: judge between them according to what God has sent down,
وان احكم بينهم بما انزل اللهand do not follow their emotions,
ولا تتبع اهواءهمand be wary lest they turn you away from part of what God has sent down to you.
And if they turn away, know then that God wants only to strike them for a part of their offenses.
And many people are surely oversteppers.
Would they then seek the judgment of the age of ignorance?
And who judges better than God, for a people who possess certainty?
O you who have believed! do not take the Reoriented and the Helpers as allies:
يايها الذين ءامنوا لا تتخذوا اليهود والنصرى اولياءthey are allies of one another.
And whoever among you takes them as allies is then of them.
God indeed does not guide the wrongdoing people.
ان الله لا يهدي القوم الظلمينYou see those in whose cores is a sickness rushing among them, saying: "We fear that a setback may strike us";
فترى الذين في قلوبهم مرض يسرعون فيهم يقولون نخشى ان تصيبنا دايرةit may then be that God brings the decisive judgment, or a command from Himself, and they find themselves, for what they hid within themselves, full of regret.
And those who have believed will say: "Are these the ones who swore by God, with the utmost strength of their oaths, to be surely with you?" Their works have collapsed, and they have found themselves losers.
O you who have believed! whoever among you abandons his Law — God will bring a people whom He loves and who love Him, humble toward the believers, firm toward those who disown, striving in the way of God, and fearing not the blame of any blamer.
That is the favor of God, which He grants to whom He wills.
God is Vast, All-Knowing.
Your protector is only God, and His messenger, and those who have believed, those who maintain the Contact and give the purifying alms, while bowing [in service].
And whoever takes as ally God, His messenger, and those who have believed — the party of God, those are the victors.
O you who have believed! do not take as allies those who have made a mockery and a game of your Law, among those to whom the Scripture was given before you, and those who disown.
And guard yourselves toward God, if you are believers.
And when you call to the Contact, they take it for mockery and play:
واذا ناديتم الى الصلوة اتخذوها هزوا ولعباthat is because they are a people who do not reason.
Say: "O people of the Scripture! do you reproach us for anything other than that we believed in God, in what has been revealed to us, and in what was revealed before, and that most of you are oversteppers?"
Say: "Shall I inform you of a reward worse than that, with God? He whom God has cursed, with whom He was angered, and of whom He made apes and swine, and he who obeyed the Tyrant —
قل هل انبيكم بشر من ذلك مثوبة عند الله من لعنه الله وغضب عليه وجعل منهم القردة والخنازير وعبد الطغوتthose are the worst in position, and the most astray from the straight path."
And when they come to you, they say: "We have believed" — while they entered with disowning, and left with it [still].
God knows best what they were hiding.
And you see many of them rushing into transgression, hostility, and the consumption of illicit gain.
How evil is what they used to do!
Why do the spiritual masters and the rabbis not forbid them from uttering transgressive speech and consuming illicit gain!
How evil is what they used to fabricate!
And the Reoriented said: "God's hand is chained."
May their hands be chained, and may they be cursed for what they have said!
No, His two hands are wide open: He spends as He wills.
And what has been sent down to you from your Guardian will certainly increase, among many of them, excess and disowning.
And We have cast among them enmity and hatred, until the Day of Appearance.
Every time they kindle a fire for war, God extinguishes it,
كلما اوقدوا نارا للحرب اطفاها اللهand they strive to sow corruption on the earth.
God does not love those who sow corruption.
And had the people of the Scripture believed and guarded themselves, We would indeed have covered their evil deeds, and We would indeed have admitted them into the Gardens of bliss.
And had they maintained the Tawrah, the Injil, and what was revealed to them from their Guardian, they would indeed have eaten of what is above them and of what is beneath their feet.
Among them, there is a moderate community,
منهم امة مقتصدةbut many of them, how evil is what they do!
O messenger! convey what has been sent down to you from your Guardian,
يايها الرسول بلغ ما انزل اليك من ربكand if you do not do so, you will not have conveyed His message.
God protects you from people.
God does not guide the people who disown.
Say: "O people of the Scripture! you stand on nothing, until you maintain the Tawrah, the Injil, and what has been revealed to you from your Guardian."
And what has been sent down to you from your Guardian will certainly increase, among many of them, excess and disowning.
So do not lament for the people who disown.
Those who have believed, the Reoriented, the Aspirants, and the Helpers — whoever has believed in God and the Last Day, and done righteous work, no fear upon them, and they will not grieve.
We indeed took the solemn engagement of the Sons of Israel, and We sent them messengers.
Every time a messenger brought them what their Self did not desire, they denied a group, and another group, they killed.
And they thought there would be no trial; they then became blind and deaf; then God turned toward them with clemency; then, again, they became blind and deaf,
God sees perfectly what they do.
They have indeed disowned, those who said: "God, that is Al-Massih, son of Maryam."
And Al-Massih said: "O sons of Israel! obey God, my Guardian and your Guardian.
Whoever associates other deities with God, God indeed forbids him the Garden, and his refuge will be the Fire."
And the wrongdoers have no helpers.
They have indeed disowned, those who said: "God is the third of three."
But there is no deity except one deity.
And if they do not cease what they say, a painful punishment will certainly touch those among them who have disowned.
Will they not then turn back to God, and ask His forgiveness?
God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
Al-Massih, son of Maryam, is only a messenger; messengers indeed passed before him,
ما المسيح ابن مريم الا رسول قد خلت من قبله الرسلand his mother was a woman of truth;
وامه صديقةboth of them ate food.
Look how We detail the signs to them, then look how they are turned away!
Say: "Do you obey, besides God, what holds for you neither harm nor benefit?
But God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
Say: "O people of the Scripture! do not exaggerate in your Law, beyond the truth,
قل ياهل الكتب لا تغلوا في دينكم غير الحقand do not follow the emotions of a people who have already gone astray, led many astray, and strayed from the straight path."
They have been cursed, those among the Sons of Israel who disowned, by the mouth of Dawud and Issa, son of Maryam.
That is because they disobeyed and crossed the limits.
They did not forbid one another a disavowed act which they committed:
كانوا لا يتناهون عن منكر فعلوهhow evil is what they used to do!
You see many of them allying themselves with those who disown:
ترى كثيرا منهم يتولون الذين كفرواhow evil is what their Self has prepared for them! God was angered against them, and they abide eternally in the punishment.
لبيس ما قدمت لهم انفسهم ان سخط الله عليهم وفي العذاب هم خلدونAnd had they believed in God, in the prophet, and in what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies;
ولو كانوا يومنون بالله والنبي وما انزل اليه ما اتخذوهم اولياءbut many of them are oversteppers.
You will certainly find that the most hostile of people toward those who have believed are the Reoriented and those who have associated,
لتجدن اشد الناس عدوة للذين ءامنوا اليهود والذين اشركواand you will certainly find that the closest in affection toward those who have believed are those who say: "We are the Helpers."
That is because there are, among them, priests and monks, and they are not arrogant.
And when they hear what has been revealed to the messenger, you see their eyes overflow with tears, for having recognized the truth; they say: "Our Guardian, we have believed; inscribe us, then, among the witnesses.
And what reason would we have not to believe in God, and in what has come to us of the truth, when we long for our Guardian to admit us with the righteous people?"
God then rewarded them, for what they said, with gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally.
That is the recompense of those who do good.
And those who have disowned and denied Our signs — those are the companions of the Blaze.
O you who have believed! do not forbid the good things God has made lawful for you, and do not cross the limits:
God indeed does not love those who cross the limits.
And eat of what God has provided you as sustenance, lawful and good,
وكلوا مما رزقكم الله حللا طيباand guard yourselves toward God, in whom you believe.
God will not hold you to account for idle talk in your oaths,
لا يواخذكم الله باللغو في ايمنكمbut He will hold you to account for the oaths you have firmly concluded.
ولكن يواخذكم بما عقدتم الايمنThe expiation for it will be to feed ten destitute persons, of the best food with which you feed your families, or to clothe them, or to free a person from the burden of a debt;
فكفرته اطعام عشرة مسكين من اوسط ما تطعمون اهليكم او كسوتهم او تحرير رقبةand whoever does not find the means, then an abstention of three days.
That is the expiation of your oaths, when you swear.
And keep your oaths.
Thus does God make His signs clear to you, perhaps you will be grateful.
O you who have believed! the combination of wine and games of chance, as well as the sharing by lot of common goods, are nothing but a defilement, the work of the Diverter; avoid them, then, perhaps you will succeed.
The Diverter wants only to cast, among you, by wine and games of chance, enmity and hatred, and to turn you away from the remembrance of God and from the Contact.
Will you then cease?
And obey God, and obey the messenger, and beware.
But if you turn away, know then that only the clear transmission is incumbent upon Our messenger.
No blame upon those who have believed and done righteous deeds, for what they have tasted, so long as they guarded themselves, believed, and did righteous deeds, then guarded themselves and believed, then guarded themselves and did good.
God loves those who do good.
O you who have believed! God will certainly test you with some game that your hands and your spears will reach, so that God may know who fears Him without perceiving Him.
Whoever crosses the limits after that will have a painful punishment.
O you who have believed! do not kill game during the inviolable months.
And whoever among you kills it intentionally, an equivalent compensation in cattle, as two just [persons] among you shall decide, as an offering reaching the Ka'ba, or an expiation consisting of feeding the destitute, or the equivalent of that in abstention, so that he may taste the ill consequences of his deed.
ومن قتله منكم متعمدا فجزاء مثل ما قتل من النعم يحكم به ذوا عدل منكم هديا بلغ الكعبة او كفرة طعام مسكين او عدل ذلك صياما ليذوق وبال امرهGod has effaced what is past;
عفا الله عما سلفbut whoever relapses, God will take vengeance upon him.
God is All-Powerful, possessor of vengeance.
Lawful for you is made the game of the sea and its food,
احل لكم صيد البحر وطعامهas an enjoyment for you and for travelers;
متعا لكم وللسيارةbut forbidden to you is the game of the land for as long as the inviolable months last.
And guard yourselves toward God, to whom you will be gathered.
God has made the Ka'ba, the Inviolable House, a support [of stability] for mankind, as well as the inviolable month, the voluntary offerings, and the vow-bound offerings.
That, so that you may know that God knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and that God is All-Knowing of all things.
Know that God is severe in sanction, and that God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
Upon the messenger is incumbent only the transmission.
God knows what you show and what you hide.
Say: "The vile and the good are not equal, even if the abundance of the vile amazes you."
So guard yourselves toward God, O possessors of intelligence, perhaps you will succeed.
O you who have believed! do not ask about things which, if disclosed to you, would grieve you.
And if you ask them while this Recitation is being revealed, they will be disclosed to you. God has effaced that.
God is Most-Forgiving, full of patience.
A people, before you, asked them, then became, because of them, a people who disown.
God did not institute any bahira, sa'iba, wasila, or ham,
ما جعل الله من بحيرة ولا سايبة ولا وصيلة ولا حامbut those who disown invent the lie against God, and most of them do not reason.
And when it is said to them: "Come to what God has sent down, and to the messenger", they say: "It suffices us what we found our ancestors upon."
Is that so, even if their ancestors knew nothing, and were not rightly guided?
O you who have believed! look to yourselves:
يايها الذين ءامنوا عليكم انفسكمhe who strays cannot harm you, so long as you are rightly guided.
To God will be your return, all together, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
O you who have believed! testimony between you, when death presents itself to one of you, at the time of the testament: two just [persons] among you, or two others, outside your circle, if you are traveling on the earth and the calamity of death strikes you.
You will detain them both after the Contact, and they will both swear by God, if you have doubts: "We will not trade it for any price, even toward a relative,
تحبسونهما من بعد الصلوة فيقسمان بالله ان ارتبتم لا نشتري به ثمنا ولو كان ذا قربىand we will not hide the testimony of God; we would then surely be among the transgressors."
But if it is discovered that both have been guilty of a transgression, two others will take their place, from among those against whom the wrong was committed, the two nearest [heirs], and they will both swear
فان عثر على انهما استحقا اثما فاخران يقومان مقامهما من الذين استحق عليهم الاولين فيقسمانby God: "Our testimony is indeed more worthy than theirs, and we have not crossed the limits;
بالله لشهدتنا احق من شهدتهما وما اعتديناwe would then surely be among the wrongdoers."
That is closer to their bringing testimony in its proper form, or their fearing that other oaths might be opposed to their oaths.
And guard yourselves toward God,
واتقوا اللهand listen:
God does not guide the people of the oversteppers.
The day God gathers the messengers, and says: "What answer were you given?"
They will say: "We have no knowledge of it; You are the great Knower of what escapes the senses."
قالوا لا علم لنا انك انت علم الغيوبremember when God will say: "O Issa, son of Maryam! remember My blessing upon you and upon your mother, when I reinforced you with the sacred Influx, you spoke to people in the cradle and in maturity,
اذ قال الله يعيسى ابن مريم اذكر نعمتي عليك وعلى ولدتك اذ ايدتك بروح القدس تكلم الناس في المهد وكهلاand when I taught you the Code, the wisdom, the Tawrah, and the Injil;
واذ علمتك الكتب والحكمة والتورىة والانجيلand when you fashioned out of clay the form of a bird, with My permission, then breathed into it, and it became a bird, with My permission;
واذ تخلق من الطين كهية الطير باذني فتنفخ فيها فتكون طيرا باذنيand you healed the born-blind and the leper, with My permission;
وتبري الاكمه والابرص باذنيand when you brought forth the dead, with My permission;
واذ تخرج الموتى باذنيand when I restrained from you the Sons of Israel, when you came to them with clear proofs, and those among them who disowned said: "This is nothing but a manifest illusion."
واذ كففت بني اسرءيل عنك اذ جيتهم بالبينت فقال الذين كفروا منهم ان هذا الا سحر مبينAnd when I revealed to the disciples: "Believe in Me and in My messenger";
واذ اوحيت الى الحوارين ان ءامنوا بي وبرسوليthey said: "We believe, and bear witness that we are true to God alone."
قالوا ءامنا واشهد باننا مسلمونremember when the disciples said: "O Issa, son of Maryam! can your Guardian send down to us a table from the sky?"
He said: "Guard yourselves toward God, if you are believers."
They said: "We want to eat from it, that our cores may find ease, that we may know you have told us the truth, and be witnesses to it."
قالوا نريد ان ناكل منها وتطمين قلوبنا ونعلم ان قد صدقتنا ونكون عليها من الشهدينIssa, son of Maryam, said: "O God, our Guardian! send down to us a table from the sky, that it be for us a festival, for the first of us as for the last, and a sign from You;
قال عيسى ابن مريم اللهم ربنا انزل علينا مايدة من السماء تكون لنا عيدا لاولنا وءاخرنا وءاية منكand provide for us;
You are the best of providers."
God said: "I am sending it down to you; but whoever among you disowns thereafter, I will punish him with a punishment with which I will punish none other among all beings."
And remember when God will say: "O Issa, son of Maryam! was it you who said to the people: Take me, and my mother, as two deities besides God?"
He will say: "Glory be to You! it was not for me to say what is not my right.
If I had said it, You would have known it.
You know what is in my Self, and I do not know what is in Your Self.
You are indeed, You, the great Knower of what escapes the senses.
انك انت علم الغيوبI told them only what You ordered me: Obey God, my Guardian and your Guardian;
ما قلت لهم الا ما امرتني به ان اعبدوا الله ربي وربكمand I was a witness over them, as long as I remained among them;
وكنت عليهم شهيدا ما دمت فيهمthen, when You took me back to You, it was You who were the Observer over them.
And You are, over all things, a witness.
وانت على كل شىء شهيدIf You punish them, they are Your obedient ones;
ان تعذبهم فانهم عبادكand if You forgive them, You, indeed, are the All-Powerful, the Wise."
God will say: "This is the day when truthfulness will benefit the truthful.
They have gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide eternally, forever."
God is satisfied with them, and they are satisfied with Him.
That is the immense triumph.
To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and of what is in them.
He is capable of all things.
