Unanswered Questions
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. By the Mount! By a written record, on an unrolled parchment! By the Frequented House! By the raised canopy! By the sea set aboil! The punishment of your Guardian will, surely, fall —
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم والطور وكتب مسطور في رق منشور والبيت المعمور والسقف المرفوع والبحر المسجور ان عذاب ربك لوقعnothing can repel it.
ما له من دافعThe day the sky will be shaken with violent turbulence, and the mountains will set forth in motion —
يوم تمور السماء مورا وتسير الجبال سيراwoe, that Day, to the deniers, those who frolic in vain discourse.
فويل يوميذ للمكذبين الذين هم في خوض يلعبونThe day they will be pushed violently toward the fire of Jahannam,
يوم يدعون الى نار جهنم دعا'This is the fire you used to deny.'
هذه النار التي كنتم بها تكذبونIs this, then, an illusion, or do you not see?
افسحر هذا ام انتم لا تبصرون'Burn in it: whether you are patient or not, it is the same for you.'
اصلوها فاصبروا او لا تصبروا سواء عليكمYou are only recompensed for what you used to do.
انما تجزون ما كنتم تعملونThose who guard themselves are, indeed, in gardens and bliss, rejoicing in what their Guardian has given them,
ان المتقين في جنت ونعيم فكهين بما ءاتىهم ربهمand their Guardian has protected them from the punishment of the Blaze.
ووقىهم ربهم عذاب الجحيم'Eat and drink pleasantly, for what you used to do,' reclining on aligned couches; and We paired them with companions of listening and support.
كلوا واشربوا هنيا بما كنتم تعملون متكين على سرر مصفوفة وزوجنهم بحور عينAnd those who believed, and whose descendants followed them in faith, We joined to them their descendants, without diminishing anything from their deeds.
والذين ءامنوا واتبعتهم ذريتهم بايمن الحقنا بهم ذريتهم وما التنهم من عملهم من شىءEvery person is a pledge for what they have earned.
كل امري بما كسب رهينWe will provide them with fruit and meat, of what they desire; they will pass among themselves a cup wherein there is neither idle talk nor incitement to transgression.
وامددنهم بفكهة ولحم مما يشتهون يتنزعون فيها كاسا لا لغو فيها ولا تاثيمAnd there will circulate among them young boys who belong to them, like well-guarded pearls.
ويطوف عليهم غلمان لهم كانهم لولو مكنونAnd they will turn to one another, questioning,
واقبل بعضهم على بعض يتساءلونsaying: 'We were before, among our own, filled with apprehension; God has favored us and protected us from the punishment of the scorching wind.'
قالوا انا كنا قبل في اهلنا مشفقين فمن الله علينا ووقىنا عذاب السموم'We used to call upon Him before: He is the Virtuous, the Benevolent.'
انا كنا من قبل ندعوه انه هو البر الرحيمSo remind: by the blessing of your Guardian, you are neither a soothsayer nor deranged.
فذكر فما انت بنعمت ربك بكاهن ولا مجنونOr do they say: 'A beguiling rhetorician, we await for him the blows of fate'?
ام يقولون شاعر نتربص به ريب المنونSay: 'Wait, then,
قل تربصوا'I too, with you, am among those who wait.'
فاني معكم من المتربصينOr is it their reason that commands them to this, or are they a people who exceed all measure?
ام تامرهم احلمهم بهذا ام هم قوم طاغونOr do they say: 'He invented it'?
ام يقولون تقولهThey rather do not believe.
بل لا يومنونLet them then produce a discourse like it, if they are truthful!
فلياتوا بحديث مثله ان كانوا صدقينOr were they created out of nothing, or are they themselves the creators?
ام خلقوا من غير شىء ام هم الخلقونOr did they create the heavens and the earth?
ام خلقوا السموت والارضThey rather have no certainty.
بل لا يوقنونOr do they possess the treasuries of your Guardian, or are they the ones who compel?
ام عندهم خزاين ربك ام هم المصيطرونOr do they have a ladder by which they listen [to the secrets of heaven]?
ام لهم سلم يستمعون فيهThen let their listener bring a clear authority!
فليات مستمعهم بسلطن مبينOr would He have daughters, while you would have sons?
ام له البنت ولكم البنونOr do you ask them for a reward, so that they are weighed down by debt?
ام تسلهم اجرا فهم من مغرم مثقلونOr do they possess what escapes the senses, so that they write it down?
ام عندهم الغيب فهم يكتبونOr do they wish to devise a scheme?
ام يريدون كيداIt is rather those who disown who will be caught in their own trap.
فالذين كفروا هم المكيدونOr do they have another deity besides God?
ام لهم اله غير اللهGlory be to God, above what they associate with Him!
سبحن الله عما يشركونAnd if they saw a piece of the sky falling, they would say: 'A heap of clouds.'
وان يروا كسفا من السماء ساقطا يقولوا سحاب مركومSo leave them until they meet their day in which they will be thunderstruck — the day their scheme will not benefit them at all, and they will not be helped.
فذرهم حتى يلقوا يومهم الذي فيه يصعقون يوم لا يغني عنهم كيدهم شيا ولا هم ينصرونAnd there is, for those who did injustice, a punishment short of that,
وان للذين ظلموا عذابا دون ذلكbut most of them do not know.
ولكن اكثرهم لا يعلمونBe patient with the judgment of your Guardian: you are, indeed, under Our eyes.
واصبر لحكم ربك فانك باعينناAnd glorify, with praise, your Guardian, when you arise,
وسبح بحمد ربك حين تقومand glorify Him during part of the night, and at the fading of the stars.
ومن اليل فسبحه وادبر النجوم
