Al-Anfal
What Gives You Life
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent. They ask you about the surpluses [of war].
Say: "The surpluses belong to God and the messenger.
So guard yourselves toward God, and set right [what is] between you,
فاتقوا الله واصلحوا ذات بينكمand obey God and His messenger, if you are believers."
The believers are only those whose cores tremble when God is remembered, whose faith increases when His signs are recited to them, and who rely upon their Guardian,
انما المومنون الذين اذا ذكر الله وجلت قلوبهم واذا تليت عليهم ءايته زادتهم ايمنا وعلى ربهم يتوكلونwho maintain the Contact, and who spend from what We have provided them as sustenance — those are the true believers.
They have degrees with their Guardian, a forgiveness, and a generous provision.
As when your Guardian brought you out of your dwelling in truth, while a group of believers were averse to it, arguing with you about the truth once it had become clear, as if they were being driven toward death, their eyes open.
And when God promised you that one of the two groups would be yours, while you wished it would be the one without arms.
But God wanted, by His words, to make the truth prevail and to cut off, to the last remnant, those who disown so as to make the truth prevail and to nullify falsehood, however much the severed detest it.
When you implored the help of your Guardian, and He answered you: "I reinforce you with a thousand Agents, following one another."
And God made it only a good tiding, and so that your cores might find ease in it.
But victory comes only from God.
God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise.
When He enveloped you in drowsiness, as a security from Himself, and sent down upon you, from the sky, water, to purify you with it, to remove from you the defilement of the Diverter, to bind your cores, and to make firm your steps with it.
When your Guardian revealed to the Agents: "I am with you; so make firm those who have believed.
I will cast terror into the cores of those who disown.
So multiply the captives beyond [their necessary number], and multiply among them those of the greatest exchange value."
That is because they set themselves against God and His messenger.
And whoever sets himself against God and His messenger — God is indeed severe in sanction.
That is for you: taste it, then!
And for those who disown is reserved the punishment of the Fire.
O you who have believed! when you meet those who disown advancing [for battle], do not turn your backs to them.
And whoever, on that day, turns his back to them — except as a maneuver for battle, or a withdrawal toward a [allied] group — incurs God's anger, and his refuge will be Jahannam.
And what an evil destination!
So it was not you who killed them,
فلم تقتلوهمbut it was God who killed them.
And you did not throw, when you threw, but it was God who threw,
وما رميت اذ رميت ولكن الله رمىso as to test the believers with a good testing, from Himself.
God is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
That is for you! And God weakens the scheming of those who disown.
ذلكم وان الله موهن كيد الكفرينIf you sought a decisive judgment, the decisive judgment has already come to you;
ان تستفتحوا فقد جاءكم الفتحand if you cease, it will be better for you;
وان تنتهوا فهو خير لكمbut if you resume, We will resume,
وان تعودوا نعدand your group will not avail you at all, even if it is numerous;
ولن تغني عنكم فيتكم شيا ولو كثرتfor God is with the believers.
O you who have believed! obey God and His messenger,
يايها الذين ءامنوا اطيعوا الله ورسولهand do not turn away from him, while you hear.
And do not be like those who say: "We have heard", while they do not hear.
The worst of living beings, with God, are the deaf, the mute, those who do not reason.
ان شر الدواب عند الله الصم البكم الذين لا يعقلونHad God known any good in them, He would certainly have made them hear;
ولو علم الله فيهم خيرا لاسمعهمand even had He made them hear, they would have turned away, evading.
O you who have believed! respond to God and to the messenger, when he calls you to what gives you life,
يايها الذين ءامنوا استجيبوا لله وللرسول اذا دعاكم لما يحييكمand know that God interposes between the human being and his core, and that it is to Him that you will be gathered.
And guard yourselves against a trial that will not strike exclusively those among you who have done wrong,
واتقوا فتنة لا تصيبن الذين ظلموا منكم خاصةand know that God is severe in sanction.
And remember when you were few, reduced to weakness on the earth, fearing that people would snatch you away; He then granted you refuge, reinforced you with His help, and provided you with good things as sustenance — perhaps you will be grateful.
O you who have believed! do not betray God and the messenger, and do not betray your trusts, while you know.
And know that your goods and your children are but a trial, and that with God there is an immense reward.
O you who have believed! if you guard yourselves toward God, He will grant you a Discernment, cover your evil deeds for you, and forgive you.
God holds the immense favor.
And when those who disown were plotting against you, to immobilize you, kill you, or expel you.
They plotted, and God plotted [in return],
ويمكرون ويمكر اللهand God is the best of those who plot.
والله خير المكرينAnd when Our signs are recited to them, they say: "We have indeed heard; if we wished, we would say the same;
واذا تتلى عليهم ءايتنا قالوا قد سمعنا لو نشاء لقلنا مثل هذاthese are nothing but legends of the ancients."
And when they said: "O God! if this is indeed the truth from You, then rain down upon us stones from the sky, or bring us a painful punishment."
But it was not for God to punish them while you were among them,
وما كان الله ليعذبهم وانت فيهمand it was not for God to punish them while they were asking forgiveness.
And what reason would they have for God not to punish them, while they turn [people] away from the inviolable place of prostration, without even being its allies?
Its allies are only those who guard themselves,
ان اولياوه الا المتقونbut most of them do not know.
And their Contact, near the House, was nothing but a brawl mixed with a diversion [from the path of God].
Taste then the punishment, for having disowned.
Those who disown spend their goods so as to turn [others] away from the path of God.
So they will spend it, then it will become for them a bitter regret, then they will be overcome.
And those who disown will be gathered toward Jahannam, so that God may distinguish the vile from the good, place the vile, part upon part, make of it a whole heap, and put it into Jahannam.
Those are the losers.
اوليك هم الخسرونSay to those who disown: if they cease, what has already passed will be forgiven them;
قل للذين كفروا ان ينتهوا يغفر لهم ما قد سلفbut if they resume, the way [of acting] of the ancients is already well established.
And fight them until there is no more trial, and the Law is entirely for God.
But if they cease, then God sees perfectly what they do.
And if they turn away, know then that God is your nearest Guarantor.
What an excellent Guarantor,
نعم المولىand what an excellent Helper!
And know that, of everything you take as spoils, a fifth belongs to God, to the messenger, to relatives, to orphans, to the destitute, and to the stranded traveler — if you believe in God and in what We sent down upon Our obedient one, on the day of the Discernment, the day the two forces met.
And God is capable of all things.
When you were on the nearer side, and they were on the farther side, and the cavalry was lower than you.
اذ انتم بالعدوة الدنيا وهم بالعدوة القصوى والركب اسفل منكمAnd had you made an appointment [to meet], you would have differed over that appointment;
ولو تواعدتم لاختلفتم في الميعدbut [it happened thus] so that God might accomplish a matter already decreed, so that whoever was to perish might perish upon clear evidence, and whoever was to live might live upon clear evidence.
God is surely the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
When God showed them to you, in your sleep, as few —
اذ يريكهم الله في منامك قليلاand had He shown them to you as many, you would certainly have faltered, and you would certainly have disagreed over the matter;
ولو ارىكهم كثيرا لفشلتم ولتنزعتم في الامرbut God preserved [you from that].
He is indeed All-Knowing of what the chests contain.
And when He showed them to you, when you met, as few in your eyes, and made you appear few in their eyes, so that God might accomplish a matter already decreed.
And it is to God that all matters return.
O you who have believed! when you meet a [hostile] group, stand firm, and remember God abundantly — perhaps you will succeed.
And obey God and His messenger,
واطيعوا الله ورسولهand do not disagree with one another, lest you falter and lose your momentum;
ولا تنزعوا فتفشلوا وتذهب ريحكمand be patient.
God is indeed with the patient.
And do not be like those who came out of their dwellings with insolence and for show before the people, and who turn [others] away from the path of God.
God encompasses perfectly what they do.
والله بما يعملون محيطAnd when the Diverter embellished their deeds for them, and said: "None, today, among the people, can overcome you, and I am your neighboring protector";
واذ زين لهم الشيطن اعملهم وقال لا غالب لكم اليوم من الناس واني جار لكمbut when the two forces saw one another, he turned back on his heels, and said: "I am clear of you; I see what you do not see; I fear God."
God is severe in sanction.
When the hypocrites, and those in whose cores is a sickness, said: "Their Law has indeed deceived these people."
But whoever relies upon God — God is indeed All-Powerful, Wise.
And if you could see, when the Self is taken from those who disowned,
ولو ترى اذ يتوفى الذين كفرواthe Agents multiply their haul of them, whether they face forward or turn away in flight: "Taste the punishment of the Blaze!"
That is what your hands have prepared; and God is not at all unjust toward the constrained [under compulsion].
Like the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,
كداب ءال فرعونand of those before them, who disowned the signs of God; God then seized them for their offenses.
God is indeed strong, severe in sanction.
That is because God never changes a blessing He has granted a people, until they change what is in themselves; and God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Like the conduct of the clan of Fir'awn,
كداب ءال فرعونand of those before them, who denied the signs of their Guardian; We then annihilated them for their offenses,
والذين من قبلهم كذبوا بايت ربهم فاهلكنهم بذنوبهمand We drowned the clan of Fir'awn.
All were wrongdoers.
The worst of living beings, with God, are those who disowned and who, henceforth, do not believe — those with whom you made a pact, and who, every time, break their pact, and who do not guard themselves.
So if you overtake them in war, scatter them, along with them, those who follow them, that they may remember.
And if you fear treachery from a people, denounce [the pact] toward them, on equal terms.
God does not love the treacherous.
And let those who disown by no means think that they have gotten ahead.
They cannot render [God] powerless.
And prepare, against them, whatever you can of force and of steeds held ready for battle,
واعدوا لهم ما استطعتم من قوة ومن رباط الخيلso as to strike terror thereby into the enemy of God and your enemy, and others, besides them, whom you do not know:
God, He, knows them.
And whatever you spend in the way of God will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
And if they incline toward peace, incline toward it also, and rely upon God.
He is, indeed, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
And if they want to deceive you, then God suffices you.
It is He who reinforced you with His help and with the believers, and who reconciled their cores.
Had you spent all that is on earth, you would not have reconciled their cores,
لو انفقت ما في الارض جميعا ما الفت بين قلوبهمbut it is God who reconciled them.
He is indeed All-Powerful, Wise.
O Prophet! God suffices you,
يايها النبي حسبك اللهand so do those of the believers who follow you.
O Prophet! urge the believers to combat.
يايها النبي حرض المومنين على القتالIf there are, among you, twenty patient men, they will overcome two hundred [men];
ان يكن منكم عشرون صبرون يغلبوا مايتينand if there are a hundred among you, they will overcome a thousand of those who disown, for they are a people who do not understand.
Now, God has lightened [your burden], and He has known that there was weakness in you.
الن خفف الله عنكم وعلم ان فيكم ضعفاSo if there are a hundred among you, patient, they will overcome two hundred;
فان يكن منكم ماية صابرة يغلبوا مايتينand if there are a thousand among you, they will overcome two thousand, with God's permission.
God is with the patient.
It was not for a prophet to have captives, until he had fully subdued the land.
You wanted the fleeting goods of the present life,
تريدون عرض الدنياwhile God wants the last life.
God is All-Powerful, Wise.
Had it not been for a prior register from God, an immense punishment would have touched you for what you took.
So eat of what you have taken as spoils, lawful and good,
God is indeed Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
O Prophet! say to those of the captives in your hands: "If God knows any good in your cores, He will give you better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you."
God is Most-Forgiving, Benevolent.
And if they want to betray you, they have already betrayed God before, and He has given you power over them.
God is All-Knowing, Wise.
Those who have believed, emigrated, and striven with their goods and their Selves in the way of God, and those who gave refuge and helped — those are allies of one another.
And those who believed without emigrating — you have, of their protection, no responsibility, until they emigrate.
And if they ask you for help in the name of the Law, help is incumbent upon you, except against a people between whom and you there is a solemn engagement.
God sees perfectly what you do.
And those who disown are allies of one another.
If you do not do this, there will be a trial on earth, and immense corruption.
And those who have believed, emigrated, and striven in the way of God, and those who gave refuge and helped — those are the true believers.
They have a forgiveness, and a generous provision.
And those who believed afterward, emigrated, and strove with you — those are among you.
And the possessors of kinship ties have, toward one another, greater right according to God's Code.
God is indeed All-Knowing of all things.
