Locks Upon the Cores
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
In the name of God, the All-Benevolent, the Benevolent.
Those who disown and bar from the way of God — He renders their works astray.
الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله اضل اعملهم
And those who have believed and done sound deeds, and have believed in what has been sent down to Muhammad — and it is the truth from their Guardian — He has covered their bad deeds and made their condition sound.
والذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت وءامنوا بما نزل على محمد وهو الحق من ربهم كفر عنهم سياتهم واصلح بالهم
That is because those who disown follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Guardian.
ذلك بان الذين كفروا اتبعوا البطل وان الذين ءامنوا اتبعوا الحق من ربهم
Thus does God multiply for mankind their examples.
كذلك يضرب الله للناس امثلهم
So when you meet those who disown, multiply the captives.
فاذا لقيتم الذين كفروا فضرب الرقاب
Then, when you have fully subdued them, tighten their bonds firmly,
حتى اذا اثخنتموهم فشدوا الوثاق
then either grace, or exchange of captives, until the war lays down its burdens.
فاما منا بعد واما فداء حتى تضع الحرب اوزارها
That is so. And had God willed, He would have helped Himself against them,
ذلك ولو يشاء الله لانتصر منهم
but so as to test some of you by means of others.
ولكن ليبلوا بعضكم ببعض
And those who fought in the way of God, He will never render their works astray.
والذين قتلوا في سبيل الله فلن يضل اعملهم
He will guide them and make their condition sound, and admit them to the Garden which He has made them recognize.
سيهديهم ويصلح بالهم ويدخلهم الجنة عرفها لهم
O you who have believed! If you help God, He will help you and make firm your steps.
يايها الذين ءامنوا ان تنصروا الله ينصركم ويثبت اقدامكم
And those who disown — downfall be upon them, and He renders their works astray.
والذين كفروا فتعسا لهم واضل اعملهم
That is because they detested what God sent down, so He voided their works.
ذلك بانهم كرهوا ما انزل الله فاحبط اعملهم
Have they not traveled through the earth and looked at what was the end of those before them? God destroyed them,
افلم يسيروا في الارض فينظروا كيف كان عقبة الذين من قبلهم دمر الله عليهم
and for those who disown is the like thereof.
وللكفرين امثلها
That is because God is the Ally of those who believe, while those who disown have no ally.
ذلك بان الله مولى الذين ءامنوا وان الكفرين لا مولى لهم
Indeed, God admits those who have believed and done sound deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow.
ان الله يدخل الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصلحت جنت تجري من تحتها الانهر
And those who disown enjoy themselves and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their sojourn.
والذين كفروا يتمتعون وياكلون كما تاكل الانعم والنار مثوى لهم
And how many a city superior in strength to your city which expelled you have We annihilated, and they had no help.
وكاين من قرية هي اشد قوة من قريتك التي اخرجتك اهلكنهم فلا ناصر لهم
Is he who stands upon clear evidence from his Guardian like one to whom the evil of his deed has been made appealing, and who follow their emotions?
افمن كان على بينة من ربه كمن زين له سوء عمله واتبعوا اهواءهم
The example of the Garden promised to those who guard themselves: therein are rivers of water that does not stagnate, rivers of milk whose taste does not change, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey,
مثل الجنة التي وعد المتقون فيها انهر من ماء غير ءاسن وانهر من لبن لم يتغير طعمه وانهر من خمر لذة للشربين وانهر من عسل مصفى
and therein they have of every fruit, and forgiveness from their Guardian — are they like those who abide eternally in the Fire, given to drink boiling water that cuts their entrails to pieces?
ولهم فيها من كل الثمرت ومغفرة من ربهم كمن هو خلد في النار وسقوا ماء حميما فقطع امعاءهم
And among them are those who listen to you, until, when they leave your presence, they say to those given knowledge: "What did he say just now?"
ومنهم من يستمع اليك حتى اذا خرجوا من عندك قالوا للذين اوتوا العلم ماذا قال ءانفا
Those are the ones whose cores God has stamped, and who follow their emotions.
اوليك الذين طبع الله على قلوبهم واتبعوا اهواءهم
And those who have let themselves be guided, He increases them in guidance and grants them their guardedness.
والذين اهتدوا زادهم هدى وءاتىهم تقوىهم
Do they await only the Hour, that it come upon them unexpectedly? Yet its precursory signs have already come.
فهل ينظرون الا الساعة ان تاتيهم بغتة فقد جاء اشراطها
So how will they have their reminder, once it has come upon them?
فانى لهم اذا جاءتهم ذكرىهم
So know that there is no deity but God, and ask forgiveness for your offense and for the believing men and believing women.
فاعلم انه لا اله الا الله واستغفر لذنبك وللمومنين والمومنت
And God knows your movements and your sojourn.
والله يعلم متقلبكم ومثوىكم
And those who believe say: "Why has a surah not been sent down?"
ويقول الذين ءامنوا لولا نزلت سورة
But when a univocal surah is sent down and fighting is mentioned therein, you see those in whose core is a sickness looking at you with the look of one whom death makes swoon.
فاذا انزلت سورة محكمة وذكر فيها القتال رايت الذين في قلوبهم مرض ينظرون اليك نظر المغشي عليه من الموت
Closer for them, then:
فاولى لهم
deference and a recognized saying.
طاعة وقول معروف
Then, when the decision is made, if only they had been veracious to God, it would have been better for them.
فاذا عزم الامر فلو صدقوا الله لكان خيرا لهم
Might you, then, if you turned your backs, sow corruption on earth and fragment your kinship into rival factions?
فهل عسيتم ان توليتم ان تفسدوا في الارض وتقطعوا ارحامكم
Those are the ones God has cursed, so He made them deaf and blinded their sight.
اوليك الذين لعنهم الله فاصمهم واعمى ابصرهم
Do they not then ponder the Recitation, or are there locks upon their cores?
افلا يتدبرون القرءان ام على قلوب اقفالها
Those who drew back after guidance had become clear to them — it is the Diverter who suggested it to them,
ان الذين ارتدوا على ادبرهم من بعد ما تبين لهم الهدى الشيطن سول لهم
and leeway was granted them.
واملى لهم
That is because they have said to those who detest what God has sent down: "We will defer to you in part of the matter."
ذلك بانهم قالوا للذين كرهوا ما نزل الله سنطيعكم في بعض الامر
And God knows what they keep secret.
والله يعلم اسرارهم
How, then, will it be when the Agents keep them faithfully, multiplying their haul of them, whether they face them or turn their backs?
فكيف اذا توفتهم المليكة يضربون وجوههم وادبرهم
That is because they followed what displeased God and detested His good pleasure, so He voided their works.
ذلك بانهم اتبعوا ما اسخط الله وكرهوا رضونه فاحبط اعملهم
Or do those in whose cores is a sickness think that God will never bring out their malice?
ام حسب الذين في قلوبهم مرض ان لن يخرج الله اضغنهم
And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would recognize them by their marks.
ولو نشاء لارينكهم فلعرفتهم بسيمهم
And you will surely recognize them by the tone of their saying.
ولتعرفنهم في لحن القول
And God knows your works.
والله يعلم اعملكم
And We will surely test you, until We distinguish those among you who strive and those who are patient, and We will test your news.
ولنبلونكم حتى نعلم المجهدين منكم والصبرين ونبلوا اخباركم
Those who disown, bar from the way of God, and set themselves in breach against the messenger after guidance has become clear to them, will not harm God in the least,
ان الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله وشاقوا الرسول من بعد ما تبين لهم الهدى لن يضروا الله شيا
and He will void their works.
وسيحبط اعملهم
O you who have believed! Defer to God and defer to the messenger, and do not render your works vain,
يايها الذين ءامنوا اطيعوا الله واطيعوا الرسول ولا تبطلوا اعملكم
for those who disown, bar from the way of God, then die while they disown — God will never forgive them.
ان الذين كفروا وصدوا عن سبيل الله ثم ماتوا وهم كفار فلن يغفر الله لهم
So do not slacken and do not call for peace, while you are the most exalted, and God is with you,
فلا تهنوا وتدعوا الى السلم وانتم الاعلون والله معكم
and He will never defraud you of your works.
ولن يتركم اعملكم
The present life is but play and distraction.
انما الحيوة الدنيا لعب ولهو
And if you believe and guard yourselves, He will give you your rewards and will not ask you for your goods.
وان تومنوا وتتقوا يوتكم اجوركم ولا يسلكم امولكم
If He were to ask you for them and press you, you would become stingy, and He would bring out your malice.
ان يسلكموها فيحفكم تبخلوا ويخرج اضغنكم
There you are — you who are called to spend in the way of God — yet among you are some who are stingy,
هانتم هولاء تدعون لتنفقوا في سبيل الله فمنكم من يبخل
and whoever is stingy is stingy only against himself.
ومن يبخل فانما يبخل عن نفسه
And God is the Self-Sufficient,
والله الغني
while you are the poor.
وانتم الفقراء
And if you turn your backs, He will replace you with another people who will not be like you.
وان تتولوا يستبدل قوما غيركم ثم لا يكونوا امثلكم
